THE TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE”.

Annie is a 1982 film adaptation of the Broadway musical of the same name, which itself was based upon the comic strip Little Orphan Annie. It was directed by John Huston (Previously of The Maltese Falcon, The Man Who Would Be King, and The Treasure Of The Sierra Madre?!) and starred Albert Finney, Carol Burnett, Bernadette Peters, Tim Curry, and child actress Aileen Quinn as the titular Annie. The story followed an orphan's adventures being adopted by an eccentric billionaire, and her own journey to find her real parents. Though it was released to mixed reviews it was a box office hit and was even nominated for multiple Academy Awards. On a new episode of Hell Is A Musical, Lilz and Scott are rejoined by Malorie Savran to discuss their respective experiences watching the titular musical Annie. Join them for frank discussions on tearjerkers, Tim Curry's Christopher Walken impression, talk of wealthy privilege, and the eternal horniness of Carol Burnett's character....with Lilz and Scott!
Have You Ever Seen #512 takes a bus down to the Florida Keys to see what Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall and Edward G. Robinson are up to at Lionel Barrymore's hotel. Bogart and co-writer/director John Huston are back doing another noir after The Maltese Falcon made them major players in the industry 7 years earlier. Key Largo was also released the very same year as their masterpiece, The Treasure Of The Sierra Madre. There's a lot of content packed into this strong script, but Huston ties it all together in a tidy 100-minute runtime. Everyone gets a chance to shine, even if real-life lovebirds Bogie & Bacall are muted compared to their other 1940s collaborations. Robinson stands out the most---even more than Oscar-winner Claire Trevor---playing another in his long line of criminals. So pour a drink to steady your gun-toting hand and batten down the hatches against the raging storm as Ryan handles this Key Largo review alone. Sparkplug Coffee remains our sponsor. During a seven-decade career that spanned from 19th century Vienna to the golden age of Hollywood, Max Steiner did more than any other composer to help introduce and establish the language of film music. In July 2020, the book MUSIC BY MAX STEINER: THE EPIC LIFE OF HOLLYWOOD'S MOST INFLUENTIAL COMPOSER was published interweaving the dramatic incidents of Steiner's personal life with a highly accessible exploration of his composing methods and experiences. In June 2021, for TALKING SOUNDTRACKS, Jason Drury talks to author, four-time Emmy nominated journalist, writer, and producer of over 200 documentaries about music and cinema, Steven C. Smith, via Zoom at his home in Southern California. In part one of this two-part interview, Smith talks about the genesis of the book and delves into the musical career of Max Steiner. You'll also hear selections from such Steiner scores as KING KONG, GONE WITH THE WIND, THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME, THE TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE, NOW VOYAGER, and much more. If you are not a fan already a fan of Max Steiner's, I assure you that after listening to this interview, you soon will be. Enjoy. Welcome to our second annual Oscar episode! In honor of this weekend's Oscar ceremony, Matt and Tony picked a random year to see if any of that year's Best Picture nominees were blindspots. The result? 1949. The nominess: Hamlet, The Red Shoes, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Johnny Belinda, and The Snake Pit. They briefly touch upon Johnny Belinda and The Snake Pit before focusing on the three influential films that are still loved and discussed to this day: Hamlet, The Red Shoes, and The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Before getting to the 1949 Oscar nominees, they talk about the 2021 Oscars and how the pandemic affected the nominees releases and viewing expierence. Then they touch on what they did and didn't like about the movies from 1949, trends and themes that tend to pop up every year in the Best Picture nominees, expectations and biases of older movies, and how good it feels to still be able to find art that moves and surprises you.
In the ninth episode of Season 3 (Manifest Destiny) Kyle is joined by editor Kristi Shimek (of Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist) and actor Ben McGinley to discuss the maddening decent into destructive greed and the privileged mindset of the self-determined American West that lingers in the core spirit of men in John Huston's The Treasure of the Sierra Madre.
In this episode, we talk about the big winners of 1948, including the British Invasion that was HAMLET starring Laurence Olivier. We also cover TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE (starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson...just kidding) and JOHNNY BELINDA, which was kind of traumatic.
Spike Lee’s ambitious new war epic for Netflix, DA 5 BLOODS, is brimming with cultural and historical reference points — including an extended homage to the other film in this pairing, John Huston’s THE TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE — but it’s also full of Lee signatures, in both its story and its style. We break down some of them in our consideration of DA 5 BLOODS, before connecting Lee’s doomed treasure hunt to Huston’s by way of their respective depictions of paranoia and madness, their ideas about foreign interlopers and native populations, and their grimly ironic endings. Spike Lee’s new DA 5 BLOODS has no shortage of cinematic and historical touchpoints, but its focus on the literal and metaphorical weight of gold — not to mention that whole “stinking badges” thing — is a direct nod to the 1948 John Huston classic THE TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE. In this half of our pairing we assess what’s made TREASURE endure, from the knotty moral complexity of its central trio to its utilization of real locations, and go beyond the most quotable moments to explore some of the film’s less-discussed standout scenes. Plus, some feedback on our recent episode on THE HAUNTING prompts some discussion of non-auteurs and the lost art of the commentary track. Gold does strange things to a man’s soul as we find out in Warner Brothers / First National Picture’s adaptation of B Traven’s classic "The Treasure Of The Sierra Madre". Who is B Traven? Why can’t Dobbs see that he’s got gold fever? How much gold is enough gold? So many questions and so few answers in a truly great movie, one of Humphrey Bogart’s best and definitely one of John Huston’s best. It’s also one of the only (or the only) movie where a father and son both won an Oscar in the same year for the same movie. Bob and I like that part especially. It’s good to see a father and son have great success together. This is the second movie in our John Huston & Humphrey Bogart movie marathon.
We watched 1948's The Treasure Of The Sierra Madre with guests Carrie Specht from Classicfilmfan.com and Paxton Holley from The Cult Film Club Podcast and now we all want to do a prospectin' jig.
Humphrey Bogart! We discuss the life and films of one of the most famous actors in the history of cinema. Films discussed include: The Petrified Forest, High Sierra, The Maltese Falcon, The Big Sleep, Sahara, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Casablanca, The African Queen, The Caine Mutiny and more. Also The Hobbit 2, Sherlock, Her, Inside Llewyn Davis, Frozen and more!
The 35th instalment of The Top 100 Project takes us on a hunt for Mexican gold as we tackle The Treasure Of The Sierra Madre! Here’s yet another dark AFI movie, filled with greed and madness. The ’40s was a rough and violent decade, so it’s fitting that we near the end of it with such a violent picture. It even got our dog Fox worked up about it two-thirds of the way through the podcast. Bogart and Huston have that effect on dogs. Go to it!
Warren Oates gives a powerhouse performance in this tale of murder and intrigue south of the border. We talked to screenwriter Gordon Dawson and cultography author Ian Cooper about this underrated Sam Peckinpah gem.
