This week Brian DeLay drops in to share a milkshake about There Will Be Blood and the performance of Daniel Day-Lewis. We explore the complexity of the protagonist, Daniel Plainview, and his lack of change throughout the film as well as the historical context of oil barons and the era of titans in American history. The conversation delves into the relationship between Plainview and capitalism, highlighting his refusal to let the big guys win, even at the cost of his own success. The conversation touches on the violent ending, the absence of Native peoples in the narrative, and Brian DeLay's work on the West including the differences between writing for trade presses and academic presses. Brian is a titan in the field so I hope you enjoy this conversationAbout our guest:Brian DeLay is a scholar of 18th- and 19th-century North America, specializing in transnational, borderlands, and Native American histories. Most of his writing explores connections between U.S., Latin American, and Indigenous histories in order to better understand power and inequality in the Western Hemisphere. His first book, War of a Thousand Deserts: Indian Raids and the U.S.-Mexican Warrecovers the forgotten, transnational story of how Comanches, Kiowas, Apaches, Navajos and other Indigenous peoples shaped the transformative era of the U.S.-Mexican War. He is now working on three interconnected projects about the history of the international arms trade. The first is a book called Aim at Empire: American Revolutions through the Barrel of a Gun, 1750-1825. The book explains how the international arms trade made anticolonial rebellion a practical possibility in British North America; how arms dealers from the newly-independent United States equipped the Haitian Revolution and the Spanish American Wars for Independence; and how privileged control over war material empowered U.S. empire in the trans-Appalachian West. Aim at Empire will be published by W.W. Norton in 2024. The second project is another book under contract with W.W. Norton: Means of Destruction: Guns, Freedom, and Domination in the Americas before World War II.

There are so many movies you can pick when your theme is ASSHOLES ON FILM. There simply isn't enough days in a month to fill with all the great assholes in cinema. But one character certainly springs to mind when you're thinking up movies for such a subject and that's one of our favorite assholes, Daniel Plainview. In the last week of our theme we're pulling out some heavy hitters and there's few films better for that discussion than Paul Thomas Anderson's “There Will Be Blood” from 2007 starring that man Daniel Day-Lewis and an oil man who despises most people, except for a few, and even then they could still end up dead or shunned. “These are the statutes and rules that you shall be careful to do in the land that Yahweh, the God of your fathers, has given you to possess, all the days that you live on the earth. You shall surely destroy all the places where the nations whom you shall dispossess served their gods, on the high mountains and on the hills and under every green tree. You shall tear down their altars and dash in pieces their pillars and burn their Asherim with fire. You shall chop down the carved images of their gods and destroy their name out of that place. You shall not worship Yahweh your God in that way. But you shall seek the place that Yahweh your God will choose out of all your tribes to put his name and make his habitation there. There you shall go, and there you shall bring your burnt offerings and your sacrifices, your tithes and the contribution that you present, your vow offerings, your freewill offerings, and the firstborn of your herd and of your flock. And there you shall eat before Yahweh your God, and you shall rejoice, you and your households, in all that you undertake, in which Yahweh your God has blessed you.” - Deuteronomy 12:1-7 This Episode's Links: (All timestamps offset by 24-seconds) 00:00 – Deuteronomy 12 07:26 – Thoughts on the Reading 18:56 – Root – Board Game Geek 31:02 - The Musk vs Zuck fight might take place at the Roman Colosseum. While Israel lived in Shittim, the people began to whore with the daughters of Moab. Numbers 25:1 These women here, on Balaam's advice, made the Israelites act treacherously against the Lord in the affair of Peor, so that the plague came among the congregation of Yahweh. Numbers 31:16 Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. 1 Timothy 2:11-12 As in all the churches of the saints, the women should keep silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be in submission, as the Law also says. If there is anything they desire to learn, let them ask their husbands at home. Before we dig into the film, we talk a bit about Boll's career. Sure, he's made some cinematic video game adaptations that weren't received well by critics, but he's also made some films that satirize modern society, whether in a comedic vein like Postal or a more serious tone like his Rampage films. There's a change in society as to how people react to their buttons being pushed. That's certainly reflected in films of the time. Who knows – some of that may come from the rise of the streaming services. Regardless, it all makes for a fascinating discussion. From there, we jump into Anderson's film. Boll has had some fairly unlikeable protagonists in his films, so we use that as a starting point with Daniel Plainview, the greedy, hateful protagonist of this film. Why is he still likable in some capacity? The film explores greed, capitalism, religion, family, and more. Everything stands out with the film as exemplary, from the performances (Daniel Day-Lewis and Paul Dano are in top form) to Johnny Greenwood's score to Robert Elswit's cinematography. We look at the complex story and ponder that the film got made in the first place. A film that doesn't have dialogue until nearly 15 minutes have passed? How did Anderson sneak it past the studio heads? It's a wonderful conversation with an insightful filmmaker. “I have a competition in me. I want no one else to succeed. I hate most people.”Talking About Paul Thomas Anderson's 2007 film There Will Be Blood with our guest, filmmaker Uwe BollThere are many films filmmaker Uwe Boll could've picked to discuss with us on the show, but the most recent film that's affected him as much as some of his all-time favorites is Paul Thomas Anderson's 2007 film There Will Be Blood. When Adam Nayman reflects on what makes There Will Be Blood so resonate, it's one of the central questions Paul Thomas Anderson's 2007 film asks that serves as a timeless themes in American culture. "What does it look like when you're appetite simply cannot be sated?" Nayman asks. "Your eyes are not bigger than your stomach. You literally need to have everything." On today's show, Nayman, the author of Paul Thomas Anderson: Masterworks joins to break down the film. We discuss how Daniel Plainview reflects the feeling of living through the Bush Administration and War On Terror, why Paul Thomas Anderson uses our oil addiction as a motif in films, and what There Will Be Blood a mirror of a number of American businessmen throughout the country's history. Adam Nayman is a contributing editor for Cinema Scope and writes for The New Yorker, The Ringer, Sight and Sound, Reverse Shot, and Little White Lies. He has written books on the Coen Brothers, Showgirls and the films of Ben Wheatley, and lectures on cinema and journalism at the University of Toronto and Toronto Metropolitan University. Jared, Oriana and Ned talk about Ned's choice of topic: the Rankin-Bass adaptation of The Return of the King. When Rankin-Bass's 1977 adaptation of The Hobbit was shown on American network TV, the animation studio was already well into planning a further effort adapting The Lord of the Rings in some form as a sequel; the positive attention and ratings success of their Hobbit doubtless made them think they were on the right track. But when Arthur Rankin Jr. confessed in a 2003 interview that their version of The Return of the King was “not a very good film,” that was an understatement to say the least. While their Hobbit had flaws but was still a reasonably entertaining, focused translation of the story into a particular medium heightened by striking background work from their partners at the Japanese animation studio Topcraft, the Rankin-Bass Return of the King, which aired in 1980 and which continued to showcase work by Topcraft, was otherwise at best a muddled mess and at worst just a flat out disaster, with scattered positive elements not offsetting the series of baffling adaptation decisions that look even weirder following the success of Peter Jackson's version of the book. What makes the pacing of the film so incredibly bizarre and frustrating, and how did the decision to tell which parts of the story in greater detail compromise the wider scope as a whole? How does the vocal casting and the respective performances end up underselling the flow of the story as a whole? Are there any good parts to the whole at all, and do they actually provide any upside to the end result? And why, why, WHY in the world are there so many bad songs throughout – even if there's disagreement over whether “Where There's a Whip” slaps or not?SHOW NOTES.Jared's doodle – and it really is all that is deserved.Come join us in Portland for our live episode recording if you can! Good luck, everyone.Ciarán Hinds really is all that. But as mentioned in a post-recording edit, Ned made a mistake and muddled two There Will Be Blood scenes – the confrontation scene he talks about is absolutely stunning for sure, but the one where for the first couple of minutes Hinds just very carefully watches, smokes and takes it all in is the one nearer the beginning where Paul Sunday first sits down with Daniel Plainview. In the midst of the Oscar season, the SAG Awards, the PGA Awards, the BAFTAs, the Blockbuster Entertainment Awards, and of course, The Deucies, we mustn't lose sight of the fact that we are still filling the Big Bracket with names and memorable, ICONIC, movie roles -- so what better way to merge the award season into the Big Bracket with an Oscar Winner Tourney. And to help decide this all important winner -- Lil G, the Spawn of Scotty Ryfun, joins Mike and d$ while #TwitterlessDrEarl is on assignment in Nova Scotia. Sixteen Oscar winning actresses -- only roles that won the golden statue, not just nominated, because if you're not first, you're last -- on one side, and 16 Oscar winning actors on the other. Tonight's ep involves some incredible actresses -- Emma Stone and Jessica Chastain hope that being recent winners will cement their own legacy in the voters eyes, while Hollywood royalty like Vivian Leigh and Audrey Hepburn hope that multiple generations of stardom will put them through. Gregory Peck's Atticus Finch strides through the courtroom of Bracket Opinion, while Daniel Plainview drinks your Big Bracket Milkshake. Some actresses appear twice, some movies get multiple shots at glory, and for some roles, this might be their only chance to move forward. And who knew that Mikey hated Gladiator so doggone much?
[School of Movies 2023] A commissioned show by Parker. This is our first Paul Thomas Anderson main event show, and it is a grimy, sticky dive into the black heart of the vampiric nature rewarded by pursuing The American Dream to the exclusion of everyone else's success. Daniel Plainview starts out as a grim, silent nobody scratching for silver in California's dirt. He discovers oil down there and rises in power and influence, buying up land cheaply with the full intention of tearing the resources out from under its inhabitants. Daniel appears wildly successful, only to find himself butting heads with other businessmen who provoke his paranoia, an opportunistic imposter and a zealous charlatan of a local pastor obsessed with keeping everyone else's attention on him. Through it all his mostly silent adopted son, H.W. remains the tiny speck of purity in an infernal subterranean ocean of oil and blood.

Hey Unf*ckers, it's Max. Just wanted to weigh in very quickly. This is an episode that we've dropped already, it's called Peak Oil. We dropped it a few months back to try and explain why oil prices were so high. It is a very deep dive into the history of oil prices, commodities markets, and all of the factors that go into the price of oil and the exchanges that they're traded on. So we go through the history of the Mercantile Exchange, adding oil as a commodity on the exchange in the early '70s, the disruptions due to the Iranian oil embargo and the OPEC embargo in the '70s, how that influenced the volatility and the pricing markets, all of the different actors and exchanges that grew along the way to begin to manipulate prices through to where we are today, to where there's only a handful of players that really determine the market price of oil. Now, the reason that we're re-dropping this particular one is because tomorrow we're dropping a half Topical Cream, half full Unf*cking on the price of gasoline today. So what's different is we discussed the history of oil pricing as a commodity and how it relates to gas prices and prices at the pump in this episode. But the one that we're dropping tomorrow really drills more deeply into the inputs behind gas prices right now. When we say it's $5 at the pump, how did it get there? What does that actually mean? So I feel like this first episode does a really good job explaining the market in general and how oil basically moves from the ground to wind up as something that's traded on commodity exchanges. But the one that we're going to drop tomorrow—again, half Topical Cream, half full Unf*cking—is really an explainer behind what drives the prices when you take that pump out of your hands at the gas station and you put it in your car. We're going to explain why those fucking stickers that you see at the pump of Joe Biden being like “I did this,” couldn't be further from the fucking truth. So we're going to dispel a whole bunch of myths tomorrow. We're going to pack you with enough information and resources to destroy all of the myths that you hear in the pundit class and in the mainstream media. And I know this is a really obnoxious thing to say, but I promise you everything that you're hearing in the mainstream media and in that punditry class is wrong. They're all getting it wrong, and we'll explain why. So enjoy this re-release of Peak Oil and look out for the episode tomorrow titled $5 Gasoline. Leif Wenar: Blood Oil- Not my favorite. A little overreaching in the historical and socio-political connections it tries to make but contains some solid anecdotal insights to support a broader thesis of corruption. Morgan Downey: Oil 101- A fundamental book to understand the product itself and the markets that move it. Dan Dicker: Oil's Endless Bid- Pedestrian but informative account of what it's like to be a commodities trader and what went wrong with the business. Leah McGrath Goodman: The Asylum: The Renegades Who Hijacked the World's Oil Market- If you're really into this topic, this is the book for you. I came to it late as it came out in 2011 but it's an excellent, deep narrative dive into a world that very few people know or understand. Bernard Harcourt:The Illusion of Free Markets- We've talked about Harcourt a lot. The first few sections of the book are very inaccessible but provide an invaluable history of the impact of Enlightenment thinking on the new class of free market promoters. Emily Lambert:The Futures- Possibly one of my favorite business books of all time. A great read told in fun and engaging anecdotes that helps anyone access and understand the bizarre world of the markets. Director Paul Thomas Anderson's "There Will Be Blood" lost the Best Picture Oscar to "No Country for Old Men" in 2007, but its legend has only grown since its release, and now it's easy to find the title topping critics' best-of-the-decade lists. Why? In this episode, Mike and Brian talk antiheroes and Daniel Day-Lewis' iconic performance as Daniel Plainview, they gush over the movie's unsettling score, wrestle with its themes of greed, capitalism and religion, and discuss what makes a movie a "grower." At last we come to the Daniel Day-Lewis perhaps best known to cinephiles: the over-the-top monstrous patriarchs of Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York (2002) and Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood (2007). Working from a couple of the best viewings we've personally had of these movies, we discuss how Bill the Butcher and Daniel Plainview build upon the Day-Lewis persona, how they radically depart from it, and how they set the stage for future developments. Critique cinéma par François Bégaudeau du film "There Will Be Blood" réalisé par Paul Thomas Anderson.

or: I Have the Solution to Make Daniel Day-Lewis Happy Again Peterson Hill returns to The War Bunker to help The Dudes decide a victor in the toughest Civil War Showdown to date! It's a brutal no-holds-barred brawl that's been a decade in the making. In one corner, we have There Will Be Blood's Daniel Plainview armed only with a verbal venom and a barbaric bowling pin. In the other corner, No Country For Old Men's Anton Chigurh wielding a killer haircut and an oxygen tank… for emphysema or somethin'. Two films enter but only can be named the essentialiest motion picture of 2007 (and perhaps the entire 21st century). Sit back and sip on a stellar stout while Chris, Jacob, and Peterson go to epic lengths to survive this merciless movie matchup.
