Editors - Andrew Buckland ACE and Scott Morris A COMPLETE UNKNOWN editors Andrew Buckland, ACE and Scott Morris came into James Mangold's latest film being almost completely unknown to one another.  Aside from mutual acquaintances, the two had never worked together or even met prior to this film.  In spite of this, their combined talents tackled a big film that featured forty live performances and an aggressive post schedule. Co-written and directed by James Mangold, A COMPLETE UNKNOWN takes place in the early 1960s, when 19-year-old Bob Dylan arrives in New York with his guitar and revolutionary talent, destined to change the course of American music.  Forming his most intimate relationships during his rise to fame, he grows restless with the folk movement, making a controversial choice that reverberates worldwide. Reviews reviews reviews, hey ho, let's GO! That said I'm still not a Ramones fan, though I like about 2 songs, whatever. Love them or hate em, let's kick off another round of 70's movie reviews. Today's offering starts off with a 1970 made for TV movie which later did get a theatrical release titled (The Tribe). Here the dad from a Christmas story, hates that the marines are now taking draftee's. He also hates hippies, especially one played by Jan Michael Vincent. Set a course for zaniness here on the military base. So great to see Darren McGavin play a drill Sargent. Seems unlikely but I heart it very much. Lets move on to (Walkin g stick 1970). Here we have Samantha Eggar as Deborah a cool person who is used for crime by this asshat. I believe it's called a love con. Lots of 70's London in this and she figures out asshat in the end, oops spoiler. I can't really figure out how the whole spoiler thing fits into our lil pod, I do know that I'd like to assume you've seen it and wanna hear our take, but also we could be turning you on to some great films so I'll keep spoilers to a minimum. Let's advance now to level 3 with (11 Harrowhouse 1974) and can Candice Bergen, Charles Gordon, and James Mason, make this jewel heist film NOT dull as dishwater. See Ma, no spoilers, HA. Ok next up is (Green Eye's 1977) No spoilers but we love us some Paul Winfield, and this made for TV movie about a very sweet man with a cool mom, trying to do right and cope with what happened in nam, that I've been searching for forever and is now on you tube, is flipping amazing!!!! Also it deals with a very under talked subject in film, and that's our war orphans. Along comes another made for t.v. movie that is finally available on you tube, and that's (Perfect Gentlemen 1978). So much amazing stuff going into this one, Lauren flipping Bacall, Ruth Flippin Gordon, Sandy flipping Dennis, with a script by Nora flipping Ephron. It's quite a feat that this doesn't seem to exceed the sum of it's parts. Oops spoiler. It is good though, and you can always listen, if you want to know more. Finally today we have (Starting Over 1979) this is also a film that has a lot of awesome goin into it. Screenplay by Mary Tyler Moore and the Simpson's creator James Brooks, Murphy flipping brown, Jill Clayburgh, Charles Durning, Francis Sternhagen, the expert directing of Alan Pakula, and even Burt flipping Reynolds. Lets hear it folks. I think this one delivers, but I may sadly be alone in that assessment, but I'm writing this SO , it's the best and is loved by all. He he, I'm having a bit of fun today, thank you dear listers for your time, please tell your friends and or write us a review. Love us or hate us we'll take the feedback form, today only. Seriously though , thanks.

Hey, Q-Balls!We're back this week with a movie I swore I'd never watch again and a movie I have watched more times than I can count: A CLOCKWORK ORANGE & THE PARALLAX VIEW. We talk a whole lot about A CLOCKWORK ORANGE and I talk a little bit about THE PARALLAX VIEW.After a long Christina & Quinn Chat wherein we discuss Quinn's birthday, favorite childhood authors, ouija boards, meditation, progress vs. perfection, midlife and quarter-life crises, feeling jealous of young, talented people, and the differences in our personalities, we do get into it (Skip to minute 23:53 if you want to get right to the movies).Content Warning for A CLOCKWORK ORANGE. Violence including sexual violence. There are two sexual assaults depicted in the movie and we talk about knowing your limits when it comes to content vs. condemning art if you bail on it.We had a nice ramble about the plot, Malcolm MacDowell's face, Kubrick's calling cards and techniques, low-budget techniques used in the film, the design and costuming, and the many misuses of power demonstrated in the film.Of course, we have lots of Trivia and Letterboxd goodness! Thanks, for listening, WoHos & Q-Balls!Stuff we spoke about on the podcast:Anne of Green Gables IS on Scribd.com. I'm downloading it now!Paul Zindel's book WAS called The Undertaker's Gone Bananas (but is NOT on Scribd.com).According to an Interview at The Washington Post, Joseph Heller said, "The way 'Catch-22' began is that I'd just turned 30, and one day I decided maybe I was ready to write a novel".https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/lifestyle/1984/10/08/catching-up-with-joseph-heller/34a76576-696f-415b-b1d7-efb0c398f065The Evolution of Horror covers THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT & A CLOCKWORK ORANGEApple or SpotifyI couldn't find any specific artist who used mouths for eyes. Apparently, it is an Instagram filter. Who knew? I didn't.A Clockwork Orange GlossaryOf course, I meant that obscure indie film by a guy named Quentin Tarantino? RESERVOIR DOGS. (Cue rolling eyeball emoji). At time marker 1:50:13 (I KNOW!), I talk about THE PARALLAX VIEW, a film that, for me, has everything: Fantastic cinematography, political intrigue, a paranoid rage-filled, and down-on-his-luck investigative reporter with luxurious '70's hair, an assassination plot, an amazing cast including a glorified cameo by Paula Prentiss, shadows, surveillance/voyeurism, a homophobic small town sheriff, an awkward joke from a pretty woman, and connections (Get in touch and tell me how solid you think they are) to KILL LIST and A CLOCKWORK ORANGE. I hope you will give this film your time. It holds a special place in my heart. We discussed THE KILLING on Episode 37. We discussed KILL LIST on Episode 93.Are you still reading this, You Sweet WoHo? From 1971, Alan Pakula's KLUTE, in which Jane Fonda plays a sex worker who teams up with an investigator (played by Donald Sutherland), to search for a missing person who'd once been a client of hers. In Paul Mazursky's 1978 film AN UNMARRIED WOMAN, Jill Clayburgh stars as an Upper West Sider who navigates dating, friendships, and parenting an independent teenage daughter in the aftermath of an unexpected divorce. Two disparate films about female characters directed by men, but connected by a very 1970s focus on character with glimpses into their inner thoughts and lives.Links Mentioned:Angelica Jade Bastién's Criterion Collection essay about An Unmarried Woman: https://www.criterion.com/current/posts/6975-an-unmarried-woman-the-business-of-being-a-woman“Everyone is Beautiful and No One is Horny”: https://bloodknife.com/everyone-beautiful-no-one-horny/Find Carolyn:twitter.com/carolynmichelleFind Us:Join our PatreonOur WebsiteSubscribe to FFR on Apple PodcastsSubscribe to our Star Trek PodcastTwitterInstagramtwitch.tv/femfreq (every Thursday at 6:30pm PT)

What is a common denominator between Harlan Marks, Amy Steel, Christopher Walken, Richard Dreyfuss, Sela Ward, and Chris Cooper? We all have been acting students of Harlan's Episode 11 guest, his real-life Kominsky, Bob McAndrew. Bob's teaching draws from a wide range of sources but primarily from the legendary Wynn Handman. A film acting coach, he has worked with directors John Huston, Alan Pakula, and Luc Besson. He's taught internationally - in New York, Los Angeles, London, Paris, Barcelona, Madrid, and Buenos Aires. Here is a partial list of actors he's coached or taught - Raul Julia, Christopher Walken, Chris Cooper, Sela Ward, John Stamos, Gloria Reuben, David Paymer, Corbin Bernsen, Tom Selleck, Sam Elliot, and Jon Lindstrom. Harlan can personally attest that his techniques and coaching give actors the tools to explore, let go of tension and build a strong character, all of which allow actors to take risks and feel confident in those risk choices. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/harlan-marks/message

Powerful organizations shrouded in secrecy, pulling strings from the shadows, snuffing out all who would dare expose the truth to an unsuspecting populace… It's hard not to love conspiracy thrillers, and 1970s movie theaters were chock full of them. This week, the Sordid Cinema crew is taking a look at one of the best, the second in director Alan Pakula's ‘Paranoia' trilogy, The Parallax View. Clearly taking inspiration from real-life political assassinations, the story features an intrepid reporter investigating a shadowy corporation that appears to be recruiting and training deadly operatives to ‘remove' political obstacles. But don't worry about getting bogged down in plot details — there are too many car chases, bar fights, bomb threats, and boat explosions to distract from what's really happening. Join Rick, Simon, and Patrick as they explain just what makes The Parallax View such a solid thriller, including the masterful cinematography, excellent staging, and overall likability of star Warren Beatty (even if someone thinks he should have been replaced). But can you trust a film that doesn't answer all the questions? We may never know exactly what's goin on, but there's a lot of fun in trying to figure it out. For all this and more, have a listen! In the wake of Watergate, when Nixon flouted the Constitution and denigrated the press, Alan Pakula's 1976 classic All the President's Men made journalism sexy and heroic again (not surprising as the book it was based on was written by the journalists who broke the Watergate story). This episode looks at three movies that celebrate what might be called “heroic journalism” in response to the direct attacks of two administrations. George Clooney's Good Night, And Good Luck (2005), Tom McCarthy's Spotlight (2015) and Steven Spielberg's The Post (2017) go a long way towards rehabilitating the fifth estate in light of post-911 failures. Meanwhile, we're excited to discuss a movie called "Dick" not just because we're the queer film podcast, but because we love an easy joke! All of this, plus praise of Michelle Williams, a hat-tip to The Who's Who of 90's comedy, and lots of debate over whether or not Dustin Hoffman is even attractive!
