What can we learn by analysing how ‘oners' are written on the page? Chas, Stu and Mel reunite to talk about writing the *feel* of camerawork in screenplays. We use “oners” — a long-playing continuous take — as a lens to talk about how some writers have “directed” from the page. We talk immediacy, camera positions, handovers, and anchoring action and more. We breakdown the famous Copacabana shot from GOODFELLAS, the awe-inspiring chase sequence from THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN, and the heart pounding ‘Zed attack' from CHILDREN OF MEN. We also briefly discuss THE BOURNE IDENTITY, HEREDITARY, THE BEAR, ALL THE PRESIDENTS MEN and TOUCH OF EVIL. And we do this breakdown by closely reading the actual words on the page. So thanks to Meegan May (of Starship Q Star) for performing the big print / action lines. Script Pages available on our Patreon. Thanks to Chris Walker for editing this episode.

Dark Waters sees the delightful Todd Haynes direct Mark Rufallo as real-life lawyer Robert Billot, taking on American chemical giant DuPont on behalf of plaintiffs in West Virginia. Though Todd draws inspiration from classic conspiracy thrillers such as All The Presidents Men, he is ultimately more interested in his characters - the victims - and how their lives are quietly devastated by cynical forces way beyond their control. As well as featuring plenty of country music as source, Dark Waters is beautifully scored by Marcelo Zarvos

David Fincher's Zodiac is now regarded as one of the best movies of the new millennium, but feeling more like All The President's Men than Se7en, this informationally dense, intentionally unresolved micro-epic initially failed to connect with audiences who were expecting a less intellectual, less layered, and far more bloody experience. But it is here where he perfected the techniques he layer used for Netflix's smarthouse hits House of Cards and Mindhunter - which in turn became major touchstones for all streaming storytelling to come!

Ashley has a major gap in her knowledge of American history, and it is shaped like the modernist Watergate Hotel in Washington DC. This week, Dave’s pick, ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN (1976) seeks to fill that gap with intrigue, secret parking lot meetings, inappropriate nicknames for anonymous sources, and a whole lot of phone calls. For Dave this is a flashback to film school and one of his favorite screenwriting books by William Goldman. A good time for all involved, except perhaps the US democracy and Richard Nixon. Movies and TV shows just can’t seem to get it right when they portray the role of journalists. Features Editor Brenda Shoffner points out how in some movies, journalists are portrayed as vile, such as in “Ace in the Hole.” Features Reporter Savannah Evanoff brings up how romantic comedies destroy the reputation of female journalists, such as in “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” and the Netflix movie “A Christmas Prince.” Reporter Jennie McKeon explains how journalism isn’t quite so glamorous. Sports Editor Seth Stringer mentions comedies such as “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy,” which give the career a humorous spin. We complete the episode by paying each other compliments for National Compliment Day.

THIS WEEK: Your host Audy is back with his good friend and fellow cinephile, guest host Warren James. First they start of with Netflix's steaming pile of South Central/Midevil fantasy crap - Bright, directed by David Ayer (Suicide Squad, End of Watch, Fury) and written by Max Landis (Chronicle, American Fury). Audy felt the film's mashup of Lord of The Rings fantasy and Training Day just clashed and couldn't merge both genres strongly. Warren felt the film was lazy in its world building details and its racial/social allegory ridiculous and missed the mark. Afterwards, Audy and Warren run down the "Top 14 Eye Roll Moments" in Bright and really light the movie on fire. Next, they review Steven Spielberg's (E.T., Schindler's List) The Post. Warren loved the film praising its realism and acting between its two leads Meryl Streep (Devil Wears Prada) and Tom Hanks (Forrest Gump) while Audy liked the film. He felt it was filmed with too much reverence and didn't do enough to throw the audience in the moment as the plot was progressing in better like minded films such as Spotlight and All The Presidents Men. Lastly, Warren gives his two cents and reviews Star Wars: The Last Jedi. He agreed that there were some fantastic moments in the film, but felt overall that it was not epic enough and felt more like a side mission, even though he admired Luke's portrayal by Mark Hamill in this one a lot. And the show ends with Audy asking Warren his thoughts on Star Wars with questions such as "Is Snoke really dead"? and "Should have Finn died on Crait?"    Bright  Audy: 2 out of 4 stars - Hell No!  Warren: 1 out of 4 stars - Hell No!    The Post Audy: 3 out of 4 stars - Hell Yeah!  Warren: 3.5 out 4 starts - Hell Yeah! (Top 10 Film of The Year)    Star Wars: The Last Jedi (bonus review)  Warren: 2.5 out of 4 stars - Hell No!    This episode's hashtags #fairieslivesdontmatter #willsmithstonerhoodie     Remember to listen, subscribe, rate, review and follow our guys on social media and iTunes, Soundcloud or Stitcher. From Citizen Kane, All The Presidents Men, Anchorman, and Newsroom to this years much buzzed about films Truth and Spotlight – Hollywood has had a long, adoring, but complicated relationship portraying journalism. The iconic 1976 film Network staring Faye Dunaway and Robert Duvall will soon celebrate its fortieth anniversary. In both television and film, journalism is still a hot topic today with crusading journalists, cutthroat executives and stressed newsrooms front and center. The film Network was groundbreaking when it premiered but it’s influence is still felt and has inspired filmmakers like Aaron Sorkin and TV personality Stephen Colbert. On the show, we speak to New York Times writer Dave Itzkoff and author of the hit book Mad as Hell: The Making of Network and the Fateful Vision of the Angriest Man in Movies about Network on the continuing allure of the journalism genre. Why are these depictions important in our greater culture? Why do newspaper journalists get so much more respect then their counterparts on TV? And is there any truth to the power-hungry female news producer?

Kirsty Young's castaway this week is Dustin Hoffman. In spite of his Aunt Pearl telling him he wasn't good looking enough to be an actor for the past forty-five years he's been crafting landmark movie performances. He is that rare and apparently contradictory thing - a character actor and a superstar. The Graduate, Midnight Cowboy, Lenny, All The President's Men, Marathon Man, Kramer v Kramer, Tootsie, Rain Man, Wag The Dog, and Last Chance Harvey are just a handful of the movies that contribute to an unparalleled body of work: he is the only actor in history to have top billing in three films that won Best Picture Oscars. Now in his mid-70s he is making his directorial debut. He says "I'm always fighting to break through... I'm trying to show you the part of me that wants to love, wants to kill, that wants to find my way out, that feels there is no way out." Producer: Cathy Drysdale.

We invite a real live human being (and a real hero) to the podcast this week and man oh man....do we start drinking wine early. LOTS OF WINE. Cheap glorious wine. Our favorite critic, Grae Drake of The Popcorn Mafia (and Movies Dot Com) fame, guests for the 2nd time to go head to head with Krissy for a rather balanced edition of CLOONEY VS. GOSLING: HOTTIE OFF.  Plus, we discuss the brand new Footloose and whether it's worth a look, celebrity hair makeovers, trips to Romania, lost Blu-ray features, talking with Steven Bauer/Rhea/Wright, being in the near vicinity of Clooney's tractor beams, DRIVE and its soundtrack, taking pee breaks during movies, couple celeb cheat lists, All The President's Men and much much more! Rated R for mature audiences!

Staying connected to today's busy kids who are balancing school, sports and social schedules, is a challenge most parents face. Two Middle School moms have launched a website, www.kidsofftthecouch.com that gives parents great ideas for creating family time beyond soccer games and birthday parties. Sarah Bowman and Diane Shakin have spent years exploring the city with their kids, but what makes their ideas unique is that each of their adventures is inspired by a fantastic film. After screening “A Secret Garden”, they explored a real secret garden at The Descanso Gardens in Pasadena. After watching All The President's Men with their Sixth graders, they toured the Los Angeles Times' printing facility and learned how the paper arrives on our doorsteps each morning. Every week, Kids Off The Couch introduces families to a new film and adventure, but also provides plenty of details for parents to go beyond the basics. For example, the moms suggest conversation starters about each film: “Freaky Friday” is a perfect conduit for discussing body image with pre-teen girls and “Goal: The Dream Begins” opened the floodgates to a conversation with young boys about the ambition and opportunities available to immigrants in Los Angeles and the U.S. In addition, Kids Off The Couch offers up book lists that relate to each film contributed weekly by “The Center For Excellence in Education", Lucy Rafael.  If the adventure involves watching E.T. and visiting the planetarium, parents will find a well-edited selection of books on space - appropriate for kids in pre-school, elementary school and middle schoolers. While it may sound unusual to advocate getting on the couch to get kids to unplug, Sarah and Diane insist that film opens the door to culture and family discussions. After a long week, it's cozy to flop on the couch with a bowl of popcorn and watch a film that makes everyone happy. From husbands to grandparents, family film night has become a cherished part of these moms' family life. As the two moms are fond of saying, "sometimes you've got ON the couch with your kids - to get OFF the couch!" Since launching the site, they have written about nearly 100 film and adventure pairings they've road-tested with their families. Past adventures are listed in the Archives section of the site, and if parents sign-up, they'll receive a free, e-mail every week with a fresh idea to get kids off the couch and into their world.
