James Frankham joins a team researching the erect-crested penguins who breed in this remote archipelago. Recent counts suggest the penguins of the Bounties are doing fine. But this is not the case on the Antipodes Islands, and the researchers desperately want to know why.

One transport planner is looking into the feasibility of a fixed link between New Zealand's two islands. KiwiRail are officially cancelling an overseas contract for building more mega-ferries, after the Government declined to foot the bill. Nicolas Reid, the Principal Public Transport Planner for MRCagney, says there are other options available to cross the Cook Strait. "There's options around the existing ferries and expanding those ferries, and also moving to a fixed link such as a bridge or a tunnel." Back in November, Chief Peggy White of the Three Rivers Mi'kmaw Band in Bay St. George South and Chief Joanne Miles of the Flat Bay Band travelled to Tasmania, Australia. Scholars recognize Tasmania as a "mirror island" to Newfoundland. The Chiefs' visit was meant to observe and learn how Indigenous people in Tasmania deal with reconciliation, identity and development for the future.

So if it's one thing we know people are good at it's making other things go extinct. We are living during one of the great mass extinct events. But every now and again, we come across a bird that was thought to have gone extinct, only for them to be rediscovered, sometimes hundreds of years later. Andrew Kleidon talks with Pulse editor Debra Fitzgerald about two islands reported in the March 10 issue of the Peninsula Pulse. One of the islands is the creation of artist Lee Mothes, yet has all the trappings of a real place, including the ability to buy and develop land. The other island off the tip of the Door peninsula is, depending who you talk with, a stinking outpost with inhabitants that pollute the water and deplete the fishery, or a necessary sanctuary and nesting spot for colonial birds.

Thanks to their isolation and unique conditions, islands tend to boast a wide array of biodiversity found nowhere else on earth. But while this makes them special places, it also makes them vulnerable to outside influence. Many island dwelling birds across the globe are at risk of extinction. In this episode we'll look at a two islands, Guam and Mauritius, we'll find out what makes them so fragile, see what happens when things go wrong, but also see that we can always chart a path back to recovery.
