Welcome to Episode #48 of the Zacks Market Edge Podcast. Every week, host and Zacks stock strategist, Tracey Ryniec, will be joined by guests to discuss the hottest investing topics in stocks, bonds and ETFs and how it impacts your life. In this episode, Tracey is joined by Kevin Matras, Vice President of Zacks, Head of the Research Wizard Division and editor of the Options Trader service. Summer is officially over, the kids are back at school, and Tracey and Kevin take a look at the summer box office results and how it impacted the movie studios. It was a summer of big tent pole movies, some good and some bad, and the return of the horror genre to big profits. These Studios Won the Summer Box Office Disney (DIS) ruled the summer box office with over a billion dollars in ticket sales. It had big hits with Captain America: Civil War, Finding Dory and Pete’s Dragon. But that hasn’t helped the stock, which has slid off its 2015 highs. What do Tracey and Kevin think of Disney heading into the end of the year? Can the shares turn around? Time Warner’s (TWX) Warner Brothers came in second with 9 movies that did well, including Conjuring 2 which saw over $300 million at the box office on a $40 million budget. It also had a big hit with the low budget Me Before You, based on a bestselling novel. It was one of the few romantic dramas out over the summer. It brought in $194 million worldwide. Not too shabby considering it didn’t have a single super hero in it. It’s expected to grow earnings by the double digits this year, one of the few media stocks forecast to do so. Comcast’s Universal (CMCSA) hit all the right notes with its big hit Secret Life of Pets and with the latest Purge installment, which brought in $105 million. A Different Tale for These Studios Lionsgate (LGF) was out of the big movie game this summer now that its Twilight, Hunger Games and Divergent series have run their course, although Divergent still may find itself on television. It was relegated to the Specialty Films genre this summer. But it did have a big late summer hit, partnering with CBS Films, with the Texas thriller Hell or High Water. Lionsgate recently expanded it to 1300 screens. It’s made $16.5 million at the box office. One of the summer’s losers was Paramount, owned by Viacom (VIAB). Although it had a modest hit in Star Trek Beyond, it also made Ben-Hur and found the audience wasn’t clicking as much as was hoped with its Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sequel. Do Kevin and Tracey like any of these media stocks? If so, which ones? Or do they think investors should steer clear of all of them? Tune into this week’s podcast to find out. And if you’re a hardcore movie fan, you can check out Tracey and Kevin’s 2015 media stocks podcast. Did Tracey and Kevin predict last year’s Oscar winners? In this episode, Tracey is joined by Kevin Matras, Zacks Vice President, stock screening and technical analysis wizard, and the editor of the Options Trader newsletter. Kevin Matras may be the Zacks’ options expert, but he is also one of the biggest movie buffs in the office. Tracey is also a big movie fan so that makes them the perfect duo to discuss the upcoming holiday movie season and whether or not you should be buying the movie studio stocks because you love their movies. Most of the movie studios are now part of larger media conglomerates like Comcast (CMCSA) which owns Universal Studios and the Jurassic Park and Fast and Furious franchises and Time Warner (TWX) which owns Warner Brothers. Investors should remember they’re not just buying the studios but all of the companies’ other businesses as well. Look at Disney (DIS). The Star Wars juggernaut that will be unleashed in just a few weeks. Expectations are high but there are concerns that Disney might not be able to meet them. But Disney’s shares have been roiled by changes in the cable business, especially with its franchise ESPN, as more consumers decide to unbundle themselves from the big cable packages. Sony Corporation (SNE) has a big hit in the James’ Bond film SPECTRE, but the studio business is dwarfed by Sony’s gaming and electronics segments. Those areas are doing well, however, with Sony expected to grow earnings by 282% in fiscal 2016. Tracey and Kevin also debate the future of Lions Gate Entertainment (LGF) now that the Hunger Games franchise is winding down. It is the smallest of the studio companies as it’s not tied in with a big media company. Will the possibility of a Hunger Games stage show and Hunger Games theme park rides help boost the bottom line? There are a lot of moving parts to the movie stocks. What are Tracey and Kevin’s top stock picks, if any? What do these two film buffs think about the holiday movie season? Sylvester Stallone is getting Oscar buzz for his turn as Rocky in Creed. Yes, it’s true! Listen to the podcast to find out more. The productivity of the U.S. non-farm workplace jumped at an annual rate of 4.9% in the third quarter, the fastest growth in four years. Unit labor costs, a key gauge of inflationary pressures from wages, fell at an annual rate of 0.2% in the period between July and September, the lowest in a year. Oil prices stalled in their climb toward $100 a barrel after a government report said oil inventories fell less than expected last week while refinery utilization remained flat. Gasoline inventories fell by 800,000 barrels last week, countering analyst expectations for an increase of 200,000 barrels. Sales generated by U.S. wholesale merchants increased faster than their inventories in September, driving their stockpiles to the lowest level ever in relation to sales. And according to the Mortgage Bankers Association, mortgage application volume fell 1.6 percent during the week ending Nov. 2nd. The MBA's application index fell to 670.6, from 681.7 the previous week.In Forex News Today The U.S. dollar stumbled to new lows after a top Chinese official called for the country to shift more of its huge foreign exchange stockpiles out of the struggling U.S. dollar. The vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress was quoted by wire services as saying China should shift more of its $1.43 trillion of currency reserves into "stronger currencies," such as the euro, to offset "weak" currencies like the dollar. The dollar has been weak over the last few months as the Federal Reserve has slashed interest rates by three-quarters of a percentage point due to the credit crunch. The question in currency markets is now the degree to which China was signaling an official policy change. The European Central Bank is expected to keep its key rate at 4 percent tomorrow, while the Bank of England may hold borrowing costs at 5.75 percent. The euro -- introduced on financial markets in 1999 -- has risen from a low of 82 U.S. cents in October 2000 mainly because of concerns over the enormous U.S. trade and budget deficits and, now, the subprime crisis. It has also increasingly gained acceptance as a foreign currency reserve in the coffers of companies and governments from China to the Middle East.Scheduled Economic Reports (Thursday)Initial Jobless Claims (Week of November 3rd)In Earnings NewsGeneral Motors (GM) posted an overall net loss which amounted to $68.85 per share, compared with a net loss of $147 million, or 26 cents per share, in the third quarter of last year.Toyota's (TM) first-half profit to a company record, and the world's number two automaker raised its forecast for the full fiscal year.
