eBay Inc., Q2 2022 Earnings Call, Aug 03, 2022
In this dynamic Nomad Futurist podcast, Dean Nelson, an alum of Sun Microsystems, eBay and Uber, and Founder and Chairman of Infrastructure Masons, shares his immense enthusiasm for the digital infrastructure industry that serves as the fundamental underpinning of our modern world. After a brief stint doing temp work out of high school, Nelson got an associate's degree in electronics from DeVry. He was recruited to work for Sun Microsystems where he learned technology, business, strategy and people management. Nelson references his exposure to all the varied areas of technology as “attending the University of Sun,” a fundamental on-the-job training that launched his career. He stresses the need for this kind of exposure. “I think that one thing we lack in our industry right now, actually across the world, is apprenticeships. If we offered apprenticeships today to people to truly learn a trade like this, it would accelerate everything.” Nelson is deeply committed to communicating the value and opportunities offered by the data center industry to those who may not understand how core IT is to our everyday world. “There is every discipline inside of digital infrastructure; planning, accounting, supply chain orchestration, fault management…even HR planning, everything can be tied together.” Nelson discusses the importance of communicating the real-world applicability of the digital infrastructure space in a way that is simple and relevant to people who may not be aware of it. “The problem is we don't have our education systems lined up to be able to say that this industry, digital infrastructure specifically, is an incredibly rewarding career.” Nelson shares his excitement about some of the newest advances in the tech space. He asserts the inevitability of self-driving and even flying cars. He does express concern about the possible abuses that may arise from audio and video deep fakes made possible by virtual reality technology. But Nelson is ultimately optimistic about the Digital Infrastructure industry leading the way in terms of environmental and sustainability issues because of the involvement of some of the biggest players in the space. He is hopeful that self-regulation can be the answer as it was for PUE standards. His message to the young: “This industry has an incredibly important purpose. We connect the world…We enable opportunity everywhere. Wouldn't you like to be in the fastest growing industry in the world?” Dean Nelson is a seasoned technology executive with 32 years of experience deploying $10B of digital infrastructure projects across 3 continents. Nelson is currently the CEO of Cato Digital, Inc, a software platform that unlocks stranded power in datacenters, the Founder and Chairman of Infrastructure Masons, a professional association of industry executives and technology professionals uniting the builders of the digital age, and the Founder and CEO of Dean Nelson Inc, a strategic advisory and consulting company serving startups, fortune 500 companies and investment firms. Previously, Nelson led Uber's Metal as a Service function supporting Uber's ridesharing business delivering over 100 million trips a week globally, as well as UberEats, UberFreight, UberHealth, UberForBusiness, and Autonomous vehicle and UberAir development. Prior to Uber, Nelson worked at eBay Inc for 7 years as the VP of Global Foundation Services, which served over 300 million users, enabling over $250B of commerce volume annually. Prior to eBay, he worked at Sun Microsystems for 17 years in various technical, management and executive leadership roles. Nelson's final Sun project was the consolidation of their multi-billion-dollar global technical infrastructure portfolio of over 1,000 facilities. Dean holds four US patents.
In this episode of Smart Energy Voices, host John Failla is joined by Dean Nelson, Founder and Chairman of Infrastructure Masons and CEO of Cato. They discuss the creation of the iMasons Climate Accord and the community efforts for diversity and inclusion, education, sustainability, and technology. iMasons Climate Accord will present a workshop on "Decarbonizing Data Center Power" at Smart Energy Decisions' Net Zero Forum, September 12-14 in Phoenix. Dean's career journey [02:15] Launching iMasons [05:32] iMasons objectives [07:37] Compounding impact [13:03] The iMasons Climate Accord [17:32] Aligning the industry in labeling standards [25:39] Community and making a difference [30:08] Creating a community Dean started working in the digital infrastructure industry in 2008 when he was at Sun Microsystems. Sun had various communities, but Dean's industry didn't have representation. So he started a group called Data Center Pulse, which rapidly grew to around 7000 people across 66 countries. People all over the world united in their efforts on different projects. When Dean joined eBay, the work was all-consuming and moving so quickly that he realized he was losing touch with his community. When he left eBay to take a sabbatical touring colleges with his daughter, he decided he wanted to bring his friends back together. Dean called nine people and asked for their thoughts, opinions, and ideas about how to make a community again but to do it a little differently. Now the iMasons community has 7,500 people participating in over 130 countries. Collaboration of perspectives As a professional association run by members, iMasons' key objectives are diversity inclusion, education, sustainability, and technology. At an event, company names are kept out of the equation. People sit together and have working sessions without knowing which company they're helping or which is helping them. Instead, each table spends a set amount of time working on the same issue. This environment has become one of the best consulting groups because of so many perspectives coming together. Even competitors sit at the same table and work together. The key is that iMasons aggregates and amplifies the incredible work from its members and their companies. That's what allows it to succeed. The organization doesn't drive and create a product. Instead, it enables the community to come together and compound its impact. The motivation of the iMasons Climate Accord With temperatures rising, global warming, and various other climate issues, the advisory council at iMasons recognized that progress wasn't moving quickly enough. Dean called one of the board advisory members, Christian Belady, and they gathered together 40 people who have some of the largest portfolios in the world. They spent six hours at that event creating pages and pages of content. After summarizing all the ideas, they all agreed they were aligned on carbon reduction. The result was the creation of the iMasons Climate Accord on Earth Day 2020. Carbon reduction is a great goal, but having a standard carbon accounting methodology would be necessary for people to align. Finding or creating that standard became iMasons' goal. If there were a common methodology or marking on products, better purchase decisions could be made based on carbon history. Also, companies will know exactly where they stand from a carbon standpoint. Lindberg frames are your best bet for your kids first pair of glasses. You will want to get polycarbonate lenses too. You might consider getting Mykita frames, as well. Rec Specs could work, but aesthetically they do not look the best. That is not opinion, that is fact. Also, do not use eBay to buy glasses or anything. Because it is an organized crime ring. eBay will steal your money & your kids won't be able to see if you buy glasses from there. Honest, physical, local retail stores is where you & your family will find the right first pair of glasses for your child. Safely. If a local retailer were to steal from their customers & patients, they would not be in business for very long. That is why you can trust the stores that have been around for a while. Trying a new store is fine too. Just don't trust eBay because you need money to feed your children. We all gotta eat. Write to the chair of the board, Paul S. Apps, Tools, and Services I have compiled a couple of tools and services for promoting your brand and making some money on the internet. 3 Keys to Carry Along I have identified three key things/ tools to help you in promoting your brand and doing business online. The first is to invest in paid adverts, yes, the free lunch is over, it is going to cost you some dollars to rake in more dollars. You must be willing to invest in paid ads to get desired and targeted reach in most cases. I highly recommend using Facebook ads and Google ads. There are other ad services available depending on your niche, if you find such do give it a shot. The second most important thing you will need is to have subscribers/lists – people to constantly engage with and to do that require you to have a mailing list. That’s a list of emails of people who have subscribed to your services. To constantly communicate with them. I recommend using a service called systeme.io to help you get started with your list creation. The third valuable skill to have is copywriting skills, the ability to craft compelling sales contents – ads, emails, website content, product description, blurbs, etc. This skill will help you leverage your brand and business success. Copywriting is one of the most powerful skills to learn in digital marketing. Take time to learn this and the rest would be easy. Now let’s get started! AMAZON (Dropshipping) Sell digital and brick and mortar goods and services. Dropshipping is an e-commerce technique in which the seller acts as a middle man in that he, takes orders on behalf of a producer, manufacturer, distributor, or supplier. When an order is placed he used the producer to deliver the items. Amazon, the world’s largest ecommerce platform, makes it easier to make money by dropshipping or selling your own products. https://www.amazon.com/ Benefits of Amazon Includes; • Positive Customer Trust. Builds trust with your audience. • Product Content: Offer Information Customers Actively Seek, Want, And Need. Advertisers can place their ads on product pages where shoppers actively seek product information. BLOGS The purpose of a blog is to attract visitors to your site. The more visitors you have read your content, the more likely you are to convert these interested users into qualified leads and boost sales. Benefits of blogs include; • Boosts Search Engine Optimization. • Develop Relationships with Potential and Existing Customers. • Establish Your Business as an Industry Leader. • Connect People to Your Brand. • Provide Value for Your Readers. BOOKS Print and electronic books. You can make money from books by either selling white-label books or writing and selling your own books. Books are of the avenues to promote your expertise – your brand. COPYWRITING Copywriting is re-arranging words to make things sell better. It is a written content that aims to increase brand awareness and ultimately persuade a person or group to take a particular action. Writing better copy enables you to convert more readers into customers. Benefits of copywriting • Presents quality content to your audience. • Connects you with potential customers on a variety of platforms. DOMAIN REGISTRATION / Domain names Did you know that great domain names are the easiest way for customers to find you online? You can help your visitors find you by using a domain name that is short and memorable. Domain registration is the process of acquiring a domain name from a domain name registrar. You will have the choice to register the domain on several different top-level domains if available, such as .com, .org, among others. Benefits of a domain registration include; • Domain names can be used to establish a unique identity in cyberspace. • It builds credibility on the Web. • Registering your domain name improves your promotion chances and therefore your site’s “visibility” on the Web. • It also produces a feeling of professionalism. eBay (eCommerce)/ Shopify Selling products online via eBay. eBay Inc. is a multinational e-commerce corporation that facilitates consumer-to-consumer and business-to-consumer sales through its website. https://www.ebay.com/ Benefits of eBay and Shopify include; • Worldwide Marketplace: eBay serves customers globally. • Earning instant trust from customers. EMAIL MARKETING Email marketing is the act of sending a commercial message, typically to a group of people, using email. In its broadest sense, every email sent to a potential or current customer could be considered email marketing. Benefits of Email marketing include; • Targeted and personalized content. • Builds credibility. • Better brand recognition. • Boost sales. • Stronger customer relationships. • Optimize your time and budget. • Metrics to learn what works and know what doesn’t. • Increased traffic to your website. But when I went in-house, I did find that when it’s your company — and your colleagues are counting on you, the CEO is counting on you and you have to look them in the eye and explain the impact of these decisions and of these rulings — in some ways, the stresses are larger.” “My goal was to be the GC of a startup so I actually wanted to move into a non-litigation role — I didn't think anyone was going to give me a chance to do that if all I’ve ever done is litigation — but I could not for the life of me get anyone to interview me in-house for anything other than litigation. I told my GC at eBay: ‘I need to do something other than litigation, and I’m going to do that this year. I hope that that’s at eBay and I hope that an opportunity will present itself, but if it doesn't, I’m going to find another role in the coming year.’ I had made my wishes known and I had proven myself in the role that I had, so when a role leading the IP team opened up, it was offered to me.” “After coming back from maternity leave for a few weeks, my new boss gave me a very underwhelming review: it was a huge blow and no matter how much I tried to change his mind in the months after, nothing would do. So I had to decide what was important for me in this role — what my boss thought of me, or the work that I did to support and enable my team to do a really good job. That failed review let me reshift my focus from external validation to the key elements of the role. It turns out that when I stopped trying to prove myself to him and focused on the work, his perception of me began to change and turned completely around. So it helped me internalize this idea that the focus needs to be the work, not what people think of you.” More about Michelle Fang Michelle Fang at Turo Michelle Fang on LinkedIn

On this short episode of The Resilient Advisor Podcast, I outline the implications of the GICS Reclassification for financial advisors. Show Notes: Advisors who use sector index and index products developed by Standard and Poor's and MSCI are going to be affected by this change. These changes will have an impact on about 40% of the S&P 500's entire market capitalization. It will impact roughly $17.6 trillion in market capitalization. This includes 10% of the S&P 500 Index market cap, 100% of the telecommunications services sector, 22% of the consumer discretionary sector and 21% of the sector technology sector. These revisions were announced in January and were implemented at the close of business on Sept. 28, 2018, Note, The MSCI Equity Indexes will reflect these changes as part of its semi-annual index review in November 2018. For some historical context, The existing classification system, which was developed in 1999. This change was overdue as they reflect the natural evolution of these sectors and underlying companies. If you find yourself needing to explain the changes to a client, simply point out that ‘The continued integration of media and internet and telecommunications, has led to clear industry consolidation through mergers and acquisitions.” HERE IS WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW - Directly from Dividend.com' report on the changes: Telecommunications Services Under the proposed changes, the telecommunications sector will be renamed communications services – a more inclusive banner that accounts for content developers and other media. The new sector will include existing telecommunications companies as well as enterprises from the media industry group, which currently falls under the consumer discretionary sector. This category will also include companies from the internet and direct marketing retail sub-industry along with some big companies currently classified in the information technology sector, including Alphabet Inc. (GOOG ) and Facebook Inc (FB ). Consumer Discretionary The internet and direct marketing retail sub-industry, which is currently listed under consumer discretionary, will be updated to include all online marketplaces and e-commerce companies. Companies such as Alibaba Group (BABA ) and eBay Inc. (EBAY ) will fall under this category. Information Technology Finally, the information technology sector will undergo a major overhaul with the internet software and services industry being renamed internet services and infrastructure. Companies such as Shopify Inc. will be impacted. Cloud computing companies currently classified under internet software and services will receive a new category called application software. As a result, the internet software and services industry and sub-industry will be discontinued. My friend Brandon Hatton of The Hatton Group at Raymond James in Atlanta sent over a detailed report produced by Blackrock on these changes. I recommend connecting with your Blackrock rep and getting a copy if you need more details on these changes. Here are their Key Investor Implications: Direct Impact: Investors who own funds that follow, or are benchmarked to, indexes that follow GICS. Secondary Impact: Sector rotation, diversification and hedging models that adopt sector constraints. Tertiary Impact: Active managers whose investment process monitors sector fundamentals, factors, and trends. Lastly, if you are a dividend investor, the telecommunications sector provided yields north of 5%. The new communications services sector will yield an average of less than 2% I hope that this podcast was useful as you look at your 4th quarter allocations and start planning for 2019.
