One easily could argue that the most significant real estate development in central Indiana from the last 15 years was the JW Marriott Indianapolis, which opened in February 2011. With more than 1,000 rooms over 34 glass-encased floors, it instantly became the tallest and largest hotel in central Indiana. It also played an outsized role in the city's strategy to attract more convention and event business. You'll recall that Lucas Oil Stadium was completed in 2008. The new Indianapolis International Airport terminal debuted in 2008. Also in 2008, the Indiana Convention Center started a major expansion, which was completed in 2011. With the JW Marriott added to the mix, the city could go a long way to realizing its ambitions of hosting a larger variety of meetings and prominent events. It remains the Big Kahuna of downtown hotels while also serving as the city's largest billboard—a canvas for hundred-foot graphics commemorating special events. Phil Ray has been general manager of the JW Marriott for the last decade and had leadership roles in other major local hotels going back to 2003. He has a 34-story perspective on how the city's status as a convention and tourism destination has evolved, as well as the latest efforts to attract more convention business. In this, the fourth episode of my special National Truck Driver Appreciation Week series, I invited some friends of the show on to discuss the biggest lie in the trucking business, the Driver Shortage Narrative. What better way to appreciate someone than to stop pretending they don't exist? Let's get the government to stop shoveling money at corporations who use this falsehood to suppress our wages. Justin 'Supertrucker' Martin, social media guru over at FreightWaves, joins us to fill us in on his boss, Craig Fuller, the CEO and Big Kahuna, who laid quite a Twitter smackdown on the American Trucking Association; Lee + Lisa Schmitt bring the latest research on the number of drivers, along with interesting truck accident data, from our friends at CDL - Drivers Unlimited, and Mike Lombard joins us later in the show to fill us in on how the shortage narrative does or does not affect the goals of the young people he is assisting move within the industry in Mike's new position as a recruiter. Even TIME Magazine knows the score, and a newly published study by friend of the show and author of Big Rig - Trucking and The Decline of The American Dream author Steve Viscelli also shows what everyone knows the real problem to be - RETENTION.A short snippet -We looked at a wide range of statistical data from state and federal sources. We talked to drivers, shippers, industry associations, and other stakeholders. We heard about problems facing drivers. Some of these concerns, like congestion and poor driving behavior, are perennial. For other problems, like the state's truck speed limit and limited truck parking, the state has options to consider ready at hand. We did not find evidence of a shortage of people interested in becoming truck drivers, but we did find strong evidence of a retention problem. That problem is concentrated in the long-haul segment of the industry—the segment that caused shippers the most pain in 2021. Because of this high turnover, long-haul trucking is the primary gateway to the industry for new truckers. Drivers argued that the job was challenging because of long hours and time away from home, but poor-quality training and bad initial jobs discouraged many would-be drivers. In this area, the state has some unique opportunities to foster partnerships that will better utilize state training monies. These options include funding and fostering an alternative pipeline to trucking careers built on local training and local jobs that lead directly to agricultural trucking jobs. Yes, that Geoff Johns! In this episode, Bandit Joe goes mano a mano with the powerhouse comics writer/executive and film/TV producer for an in-depth discussion of all things geek. The former President and Chief Creative Officer of DC Entertainment got his start as an intern for legendary Superman director Richard Donner and eventually found his way to DC, where he pitched and wrote Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. The next thing you know, he's co-writing JSA, then fully writing The Flash, and finally doing a bit of Marvel work on the side. Then, with the return of Hal Jordan in the Green Lantern: Rebirth series, Geoff's off to the races. He writes the new ongoing Green Lantern title (introducing a spectrum of different Lanterns), Infinite Crisis, and co-writes the weekly 52 series. It's one hit after another until they give him the Big Kahuna job in 2010. Geoff continued to write comics, but also started producing DC's movie slate, including Green Lantern, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman, as well as their TV shows on CW and elsewhere. Geoff's most recent work, the Image miniseries Junkyard Joe (with frequent collaborator Gary Frank) just finished it's run.
