In this episode I welcome Karl Stillner (co-founder and CEO of BrightCanary) for a discussion about device monitoring. These days, parents need to have an understanding of what's going on in their children's digital lives, but is there a point where we breach their privacy? This chat makes it clear that social media companies and the U.S. government do not have our kids backs online. It is up to us parents to keep them safe, and that requires a level of monitoring plus open conversations with our kids. Karl and I get into detail on the best approach for parents in this raw conversation. About Karl Stillner Karl is the father of two boys, aged 12 and 9. He co-founded BrightCanary, a service that helps parents engage and prepare kids for digital lives, in 2022. Prior to starting BrightCanary, was a VP at T-Mobile USA, where he led M&A and operations for T-Mobile Advertising. T-Mobile Advertising, currently over $500m in annual revenue, was formed when a company Karl co-founded, PushSpring, was acquired by T-Mobile in 2019. Karl has had numerous other technology-related roles, including a board seat with Decisive Farming, a leader in the AgTech space, that was sold in Telus in 2019 and driving the business strategy and sale of Mobiata, which created FlightTrack a mobile app for travel, to Expedia. Prior to working in technology, Karl was a management consultant with Deloitte Consulting. Karl has a BA in Economics from Northwestern University and an MBA from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/scrolling2death/support

How can baseball embrace technology and new traditions while honoring its legacy and listening to its fans? Those were the questions at the heart of the Seattle Mariners CEO's conversation this week with Taylor Soper, at the GeekWire Rooftop BBQ and Mariners Day at the First Mode headquarters in Seattle.  Stanton brings his experience as a longtime business and tech leader to his role with the Mariners. He also chairs Major League Baseball's competition committee, the group leading some of the biggest changes in the history of the sport, including the pitch clock that has dramatically shortened game times this year. He spoke with Taylor in the midst of a Mariners' winning streak that has since been extended to eight games with a 9-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Friday. An early McCaw Cellular executive and founding partner at Bellevue, Wash.-based venture firm Trilogy Equity Partners, Stanton was CEO of Western Wireless and VoiceStream, the predecessor to T-Mobile USA, and also served as chairman of broadcast communications provider Clearwire.  Listen for highlights from Stanton's remarks in the second segment, and read an extended writeup with more of his comments on GeekWire. In the first segment, GeekWire co-founders John Cook and Todd Bishop revisit a recent conversation with Brinc CEO Blake Resnick based on John's sighting of the company's technology during an armed standoff in his neighborhood this week.  In the final segment, John and Todd offer their thoughts on Stanton's remarks, Todd rants about an annoying tradition carried on by Seattle Mariners fans in the stands during a pivotal moment in a game this week, and they discuss Todd's idea to use technology to help fans keep more engaged with the action on the field. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

You've probably heard about Learning Experience Platforms but have you ever thought about being a learning experience designer? It's not a new term or title, but we often blend conversations about experience design into instructional design. Perhaps it's time we talk about it as something different. Instructional design served us well for over 50 years and perhaps it should be replaced by Learning Experience Design. None of us have all the answers, but it's going to be a fun conversation to have with Jeff Tillett. Jeff is experienced with technology, and solving business problems through the training function within the Fortune 500. But don't ask him about instructional design because he's having more success being a Learning Experience Designer. We'll be talking with Jeff about how he defines Learning experience design and how thinking differently helped him transition training programs from old traditional methods to new learning experiences that support the modern worker. "I am a native of the Pacific Northwest and grew up in central Washington. As a young man, I worked on orchards and farms around the Yakima Valley. I learned to work hard and cultivated my “maker” skills set. In high school I explored architecture, fine arts, audio engineering. I also earned a certificate in Radio and TV Broadcasting. I am an Instructional Designer, Learning Experience Designer. I have a background in graphic design, media development and production. I have worked with computers and Internet technologies for over 20 years; a survivor of the Internet boom, I assisted many startups in successfully building business and eCommerce ventures. In the late 90’s my focus turned to interactive content for learning when I was part of a distance-learning Internet start-up. Since then I have worked for various companies as an interactive developer and Instructional Designer, including Adobe, T-Mobile USA, Microsoft, Entirenet, Float Mobile Learning, Apple. Most recently, I helped Amazon Machine Learning University move from classroom only to a blended model in order to scale their program. I help organizations leverage video, interactive media and mobile technology to create high performance engaging learning." - Jeff Tillett Jeff: @MojoTillett https://twitter.com/mojotillett?lang=en Brent: @BSchlenker https://twitter.com/bschlenker Chris: @Chris_V_W https://twitter.com/Chris_V_W IDIODC: @TeamIDIODC https://twitter.com/TeamIDIODC Brent Schlenker is dominKnow's Community Manager. Rest and Recovery: your body and mind heal the most at night. Self-Care: be your own Inner Physician, take accountability for your health.   Final Words:My final public service announcement is if you know tall, lean athletes, don't scare them with this, but make sure they're aware of blebs and what a Spontaneous Pneumothorax. A partially collapsed lung is no joke. I did find out from a good friend of mine, that her son's girlfriend last year was finishing a softball tournament championship and the same exact injury happened to her because she was a tall, lanky, lean athlete. Now granted, I'm 41, so they're not expecting this type of stuff. I guess that's the fun of me being a health and fitness junkie, is I could survive a lung collapse better than most but you can still get injured. So again, last part of the big picture message here. Take care of yourself. Focus on self-care, what you put in is what you get out regarding nutrition. It's important but also proper rest, and recovery, along with proper mindset, stress relief, and bringing the cortisol levels down. I was pulling out all the stops and I'm still pulling out all the stops so I can bounce back as fast and as healthy as possible.   Resources: Scott Mulvaney & LIVETHEFUEL on Twitter (http://twitter.com/livethefuel) Scott Mulvaney & LIVETHEFUEL on Facebook (http://facebook.com/livethefuel) Scott Mulvaney & LIVETHEFUEL on Instagram (http://instagram.com/livethefuel)...

With probably the most unfortunate name in the history of company names, ISIS - the payment consortium that includes AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless - has finally renamed themselves to Softcard. Not to be undone, the other payment consortium formerly called MCX (for Merchant Customer Exchange) - formed by some of the world's largest retailers - rebranded to CurrentC. The big question is that, despite the seemingly lack of branding ability these big companies have, will this be relevant now that Apple has entered the fray?

Sometimes it's not the promise of saving money, nor the allure of a shiny device that drives you from the warm arms of your current wireless carrier - sometimes it's just a matter of standing up for what you believe in. That's the case with today's podcast guest, friend of the show and longtime Verizon Wireless customer Chris Larson, who's leaving Big Red for the much smaller T-Mobile USA due to Verizon's stance on net neutrality. On this episode of the Weekly, we'll talk to Chris and find out just what he's prepared to sacrifice, and why. Before that, though, there's an avalanche of news - and it ranges from hilarious HTC M8 mockups to off-the-wall LG G3 speculation to promises of a "low key" reveal for the Samsung Galaxy S5 - not to mention some interesting developments over at Microsoft's Redmond headquarters and Apple's Arizona sapphire factory. All that, plus firsthand testimony of just how well Sony's Xperia Z1S holds up to flooding, awaits you on episode 082 of the Pocketnow Weekly! So turn the volume up and rip the knob off: we're here to talk mobile tech, and it's gonna get weird (in all the right kinds of ways). He'll be saving money in the long term, but that's not why he's doing it. Rather, he's moving because he doesn't want his dollars going to a company that doesn't support net neutrality. We ask him what the move has been like, what he hopes to accomplish, and whether network size really matters anymore in the modern world.  • Thanks for listening! Tune in next week for more!
