02:08 Bill Laurance & Michael League 09:33 Balymaya Project 24:15 Kaidi Akinnibi 32:30 So Lieb Quartet 44:51 Alessio Cazzetta 55:17 Cyrille Aimée Bill Laurance & Michael League: Keeping Company. IT'S THE JAZZ SPECIAL!This week we take some time to explore the incredible rise of UK Jazz over the last few years with celebrated music writer and academic Caspar Melville. UK Jazz has become one of the most vibrant and exciting genres around with new festivals like We Out Here showcasing a myriad of emerging talent, the likes of Emma Jean Thackray, Kokoroko and Ezra Collective all crossing over into the mainstream thanks to undying support from Giles Peterson, 6 Music, Jazz FM and even our own Deb Grant. How then has what was once seen as a niche style become so wildly successful? Following the DIY movements of dance and indie which dominated the last couple of decades the last thing many expected to see was the resurgence of a craft that takes so much skill and dedication? Casper Melville takes the time for an in depth discussion about how we got here and where music might go next. Whether you are a jazz aficionado or a complete novice it's a fascinating story for any music fan. Before all that Eamon gets the best present a boy could wish for and Deb shares some disturbing jams from her childhood. You can buy Caspar Melvilles brilliant book on club culture here:https://www.amazon.co.uk/kindle-dbs/entity/author/B082FJF9HR?_encoding=UTF8&node=266239&offset=0&pageSize=12&searchAlias=stripbooks&sort=author-sidecar-rank&page=1&langFilter=default#formatSelectorHeaderGet in touch and tell us what you think. Welcome to the second monthly entry into The Big Run Journal. This month's theme is legacy. The legacy of a legendary event, the legacy you want to leave for your family and building the legacy of something brand new, from the ground up. Kicking us off we have Emily Barber reading "Rupi & Liv" by Verity Ockenden, a poem Verity wrote after being inspired by the legacy of another artist's work. After that, we launch into our coverage from The National XC champs at parliament hill a fortnight ago. A huge thank you to the ECCA, the City of London and all the club members who let me interview them that day. A big thank you to Megan, Holly and Glynis of Cambridge Harriers. Kieran Alger returns for a 2-minute review of Therabody's latest recovery offering. We then shift gears to a short story sent in by a listener. Jack Derges who discovered the pod and answered the call to send in his running story. Jack features as an additional voice. Then its over to Jason Henderson of Athletics weekly with his racing forecast looking ahead at all the exciting things to look forward to on the track, in the fields and on the roads. We close out with Jareth Ashbrook of the new running clothing brand Wyrd. Based out of Hong Kong but originally from the UK Jazz started the company with no previous experience in fashion but has crafted a really exciting and intriguing brand. Thank you to all of our contributors and do get in touch if you think there's a story, event or idea you want me to cover. UK Jazz artist/producer/journalist Fiona Ross chats about her new album, women in jazz, and the London Jazz Fest! All on Episode 19, Season 3. Fiona Ross is one of those people that I keep coming back to. Fiona is very inspirational and very much a role model of what is truly the meaning of success as a creative artist. I spoke with her from her London home the night after her 5th new album launch gig. I could see from all the build-up to the event, and the buzz all over social media that this new (5th) album titled: "Red Flags and High Heels" was a resounding success even after just 24 hours! Fiona explained her motivation for this 5th album concept, and how it was clearly a progressive linear timeline as is weaved throughout all her albums to date. We also talked about her founding "Women In Jazz Media" It's simply birth to continued exponential growth, now with 16 team members and a UK parliamentary award for Jazz Media Excellence, and the promoting of equal rights for women in the UK jazz industry. I highly recommend you check out the consummate musicianship of Fiona and the other musicians on this wonderful album. The production is super professional quality for an album that is totally self-funded. Look out for more coming with Fiona and me as I head over to the London Jazz Festival - reporting live for Music Matters Podcast and playing my bass guitar as a guest at one of Fiona's London Jazz Festival gigs. Katriona Taylor has just recorded her fifth album Blind Passion which celebrates music from blind artists like Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Diane Schuur & Jose Feliciano as well as some of Katriona’s own material. Katriona will be streaming a live concert of Blind Passion with her band from her Wimbledon studio on Saturday 30 January at 8.30pm. Katriona is a former lawyer turned singer and has performed on the UK Jazz circuit and internationally for 15 years. The interview includes a clip from Katriona’s rearrangement of Stevie Wonder’s track Master Blaster which features on her album Blind Passion. This week Anne and Eamon urge you to join them as they run away to pod land. Anne (a tattooed lady) asks Eamon (a man of virgin skin) whether he ever wanted to engrave a band name on his face. Then it's all jazz-funk, punk & junk as Eamon indulges in his favourite pass time of watching music documentaries and drinking red wine. This week also see's the return of 'Let's Work' our semi-regular feature about when the world of work crashes into the world of music. This week artist John Karborn tells us about his 'Hand to hand' dub plate project and how it led to a desperate scramble to cut the last 10 inch dub-plates in the world. Our guest is a man Eamon has vicariously had breakfast with many times, UK Jazz legend, creative catalyst and former X-Factor Big Band member Soweto Kinch. Soweto selects three moments in his life when the music meant everything. If you like the sound of John Karborn's 'Hand to hand' dub plate project then you can listen to clips and put in a bid or two at his website: https://karborn.com/ This weeks playlist opener can be blamed on Anne, she mentioned the eternal request for The Killers and thats how the WGA playlist works, it is solely based on the things alluded to in the show. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6uUNJHgfoOgFYFQOw3Kl6O You may also enjoy watching things so we have lovingly recreated it on You:Tube for you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGdGFtwCNBE&list=PLPPl5xM2fbUq8RHZzlxNeTZmzOtqtkO7G The 'Rodney P Jazz Funk' documentary is sadly not currently available on iPlayer but 'NY77 - The Coolest Year in Hell' is on YouTube! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxZFGf8chg8 Please do all the liking, subscribing and review writing you can (especially on Apple podcasts), it will help the show tremendously. For this week’s episode, the boys are joined by Moses Boyd, the MOBO-Award winning jazz musician and DJ. Briefly interrupting this week’s news agenda is X-Factor alumni JLS, who have announced that they will be reuniting for an autumn tour. Ari Lennox’s impulsive social media habits are put under the microscope, following the news that she’s taking a leave from social media after coming for Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King. The boys outline her good intentions while pointing out the misfires in her viral IG rant in defence of Kobe Bryant. The theme of artists making poor decisions continues as slowthai’s sexually inappropriate behaviour at the NME Awards is discussed. Closing the episode is an in-depth discussion with Moses who’s been credited as a leading pioneer in the UK Jazz renaissance. Moses speaks about his new album ‘Dark Matter’, the snobbery and elitism that exists in the jazz scene among musicians, the impact of Kendrick Lamar’s ‘To Pimp A Butterfly’, the pivotal roles drummers play in jazz music and more. But, the music in this lesson (which you’ll hear at the end), is actually our music that we wrote using their theory. On that note, we could definitely make lessons on their melodies, chords and bass as well, cos there’s so much interesting theory going on in those, but this lesson is all about rhythm, so we’ll focus on their drum groove. Right, so start by setting your tempo to 146 BPM, then make two bars of 4/4, with your grid set to 1/16 notes. INTRONow, the first standout feature you’ll notice is that tempo. That ain’t a tempo for sitting on your ass and listening, that’s a tempo for dancing! This is just one of the many refreshing aspects of this new UK Jazz movement. And this isn’t really Jazz, this is the sound of London. You see, London, which is my hometown, is a melting pot of cultures, so its music is a reflection of that. This is why you’ll hear elements from homegrown grime, Jamaican dancehall, West African afrobeat, and more, all coming together in this new sound. And this musical melting pot is perfectly captured by Steam Down. By the way, big shoutout to Gary Crosby and all the other heroes at the Tomorrow’s Warriors charity for their life-changing educational work behind this movement. STEP 1. FOUR-ON-THE-FLOOR (ALMOST)The driving force behind this awesome groove is an almost four-on-the-floor pattern on the kick. The drummer plays beat 1, 3 and 4, but not beat 2. This creates a super dancey groove, but leaves space for something more interesting. STEP 2. MORE SYNCOPATION!Next, in that space left open by not playing a kick on beat 2, the drummer plays a couple syncopated snare hits on beats 1a and 2+. Then in the second bar, there’s even more syncopation, as there are three syncopated snare hits on beats 1a, 2e and 2a. STEP 3. IRREGULAR HATSNow, there’s only one rule when it comes to the hats in this groove: don’t play beat 2. By leaving that beat totally open, the drummer ensures that the super funky groove created from all those syncopated snares is not watered down, cos this is Steam Down, not water down! Also, by having some rests on the hats, it creates an irregular pattern, which keeps the groove unpredictable. And lastly, there’s a 1/32 note thrown in for extra spice. That ain't a tempo for sitting on your ass and listening, that's a tempo for dancing! This is just one of the many refreshing aspects of this new UK Jazz movement. And this isn't really Jazz, this is the sound of London. You see, London, which is my hometown, is a melting pot of cultures, so its music is a reflection of that. This is why you'll hear elements from homegrown grime, Jamaican dancehall, West African afrobeat, and more, all coming together in this new sound. And this musical melting pot is perfectly captured by Steam Down. By the way, big shoutout to Gary Crosby and all the other heroes at the Tomorrow's Warriors charity for their life-changing educational work behind this movement. Then in the second bar, there's even more syncopation, as there are three syncopated snare hits on beats 1a, 2e and 2a. STEP 3. IRREGULAR HATSNow, there's only one rule when it comes to the hats in this groove: don't play beat 2. By leaving that beat totally open, the drummer ensures that the super funky groove created from all those syncopated snares is not watered down, cos this is Steam Down, not water down! Also, by having some rests on the hats, it creates an irregular pattern, which keeps the groove unpredictable. And lastly, there's a 1/32 note thrown in for extra spice. The eighth episode of the Burning Ambulance podcast is a special one. New York’s Winter Jazzfest brings artists from around the globe to the city every year, and packs out nightclubs with audiences excited to hear the best new music around. This year, the UK made a very strong showing, with multiple performers appearing individually and together. And since I had been impressed by the work of multiple British jazz artists last year, I decided to gather some of the best players around in one room at one time, for a conversation about the state of British jazz, their own work, and much more. This episode, I talked to clarinetist/saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings , who leads three groups— Sons of Kemet, The Comet is Coming, and Shabaka and the Ancestors—and who is on the cover of the current issue of The Wire; trumpeter Yazz Ahmed, whose second album La Saboteuse placed on multiple critics’ year-end lists, including mine; and saxophonist Nubya Garcia, who released her debut EP as a leader, the six-track Nubya’s 5ive, in 2017. Hutchings and Garcia are also heavily featured on the forthcoming UK jazz compilation We Out Here; he was the musical director of the project, and she plays on five of its nine tracks. This episode was a challenge to set up, juggling everyone’s schedules, but we met on a Thursday afternoon in a rehearsal room at the New School and talked for well over an hour about their individual careers, the state of British jazz generally, Brexit, and much more. Special thanks go out to Matt Merewitz for setting it up.
