A fascination with marketplaces and a knack for math is what pushed a young Paul Britton to explore the world of derivatives. However, it was his talent at chess that impressed a senior trader at his first interview with the London International Financial Futures Exchange. Paul was awarded the job, and while at LIFFE he discovered options—a type of derivative that would eventually become his specialty. Paul Britton is the founder and CEO of Capstone, a $9 billion global alternative investment management firm that specializes in derivative-based strategies. The core of Paul and his team's strategy is a deep understanding of volatility. While most investors would be wary of options and the surrounding complexities, Paul uses this complexity as an advantage to spread exposure across all asset types. In this episode, Paul talks about the evolution of his derivative-based strategy, as well as Capstone's origin. Adapting to a changing marketplace and constantly evaluating investment strategy is what Paul says has brought much of the firm's success. “I hope in five years' time, I look back and critique the way I'm doing business today,” Paul explains, “That, to me, is the exciting part because Capstone is such an innovative place to work. We're always challenging the ways that we are thinking about investing, risk managing, [and] about the efficiencies in our processes.” Many investors have previously viewed volatility as merely a defensive mechanism during times when the market was becoming more volatile. The emergence of volatility as an asset class is something more recent, as investors like Paul make a strong case that you can actually build a complete portfolio using only volatility and derivatives contracts. Before founding Capstone, Paul began his career with Saratoga Limited, trading options on the London International Financial Futures and Options Exchange (LIFFE), and co-founded Mako Global Derivatives in 1999. Paul received a B.A. degree in European Business Finance from London Metropolitan University. Paul currently serves on the Boards of the US Soccer Foundation, The Tate America's Foundation, and Friends Seminary School in New York City.
In this episode of Capital for Good, we speak with Heather Higginbottom, the president of the JPMorgan Chase PolicyCenter, which develops and advances sustainable, evidence-based policy solutions to drive inclusive economic growth in the United States and around the world. Having served at the highest levels of government in the State Department, the White House, and Capitol Hill, Higginbottom is one of the country's leading experts on a range of domestic, economic, foreign, and budget policy issues. In this conversation, Higginbottom explains how the PolicyCenter allows JPMorgan Chase to work on a variety of issues related to a more inclusive economy, drawing on the firm's expertise, experience, and resources — its unique insights, perspectives, learnings, and assets — including original research through the JPMorgan Chase Institute and its global philanthropy and business and investment expertise. These include a number of areas of the firm has focused on historically, including neighborhood development (i.e., affordable housing), jobs and skills, small business and access to capital, and significant new commitments related to inclusive growth, including its recent $30 billion commitment to advance racial equity, reduce systemic racism, and help close the racial wealth divide. Using the example of the PolicyCenter's Second Chance initiative, an effort to reduce barriers to employment for people with criminal records, Higginbottom describes how JPMorgan Chase works on these issues within the firm — and with partners like the Business Roundtable and others at the industry level, including, in this case, the recently launched Second Chance Business Coalition. If you push the status quo, raise your hand, and take the chance, what could you do? Patricia Arty, Director of Strategic Partnerships for the US Soccer Foundation discussed all of this and more on today's podcast including why she is pursuing her MBA and her role in strategy and execution of national partnerships for the US Soccer Foundation. Top 4 Takeaways: 1. Ask yourself, is your current employment allowing you to still learn? Are you still growing? These are the two questions to consider when thinking about moving on from an organization. 2. Commit your time. In life, you have multiple teams that you belong to. How can you work together with your teammates for collaboration? Don't be afraid to ask for help or to divide up the work. 3. Be clear with leadership about what YOU want. If there is an area you are looking to grow and that sector is available at the company, make it known. Raise your hand to assist that area to get experience and put action against your curiosity. 4. Have an open mind. There are lots of ways to work in sports, not just team side. Think about apparel, Foundations, or even corporate initiatives. Pick your head and eyes up and be open to opportunity. https://www.linkedin.com/in/patricia-arty/

On this episode of Let’s Talk Soccer: With the Euros now behind us, it’s only right that we pay homage to them and talk about the final, the TOTT and our thoughts on the tournament. Next up: we hit on some transfer happenings and rumors. Then, Josh talks about a very cool Barcelona camp he’s attending this week (FCBescola). The charity we discuss is the US Soccer Foundation. Then it’s on to the FUT TOTT, Euros style! Finally we answer a listener’s question. We hope you enjoy! A quick note: We realize that the production quality is quite low. We are amateurs in podcasting. We are a father and son team that has a passion for - and knowledge of - soccer in the forms of teams, tactics, players, managers, real-world/gaming/online, training and fitness. Therefore, please focus on the quality of the content and not the lack of quality in the editing and production. As we do this each week, we learn a little more about the production side of things (notice the cheesy applause added at the beginning and end of the episode!!!). Thank you for your support. If you have questions, comments or suggestions, please don't hesitate to let us know. An 11-year old son and his 45-year old dad discuss the world of soccer. We focus on the Premier League, FIFA16, FUTHEAD, Champions League, training and fitness. Each week we will go through the top matches and results, look forward to upcoming fixtures and make predictions, give tips and advice on building the best FUT team, playing FIFA16 and training for soccer fitness and skills.
