Bible study for March 28, 2025, is cancelled.Scripture Reading: Acts 27:1–44 27 When it was decided we would sail to Italy, they handed over Paul and some other prisoners to a centurion of the Augustan Cohort named Julius. 2 We went on board a ship from Adramyttium that was about to sail to various ports along the coast of the province of Asia and put out to sea, accompanied by Aristarchus, a Macedonian from Thessalonica. 3 The next day we put in at Sidon, and Julius, treating Paul kindly, allowed him to go to his friends so they could provide him with what he needed. 4 From there we put out to sea and sailed under the lee of Cyprus because the winds were against us. 5 After we had sailed across the open sea off Cilicia and Pamphylia, we put in at Myra in Lycia. 6 There the centurion found a ship from Alexandria sailing for Italy, and he put us aboard it. 7 We sailed slowly for many days and arrived with difficulty off Cnidus. Because the wind prevented us from going any farther, we sailed under the lee of Crete off Salmone. 8 With difficulty we sailed along the coast of Crete and came to a place called Fair Havens that was near the town of Lasea. 9 Since considerable time had passed and the voyage was now dangerous because the fast was already over, Paul advised them, 10 “Men, I can see the voyage is going to end in disaster and great loss not only of the cargo and the ship, but also of our lives.” 11 But the centurion was more convinced by the captain and the ship's owner than by what Paul said. 12 Because the harbor was not suitable to spend the winter in, the majority decided to put out to sea from there. They hoped that somehow they could reach Phoenix, a harbor of Crete facing southwest and northwest, and spend the winter there. 13 When a gentle south wind sprang up, they thought they could carry out their purpose, so they weighed anchor and sailed close along the coast of Crete. 14 Not long after this, a hurricane-force wind called the northeaster blew down from the island. 15 When the ship was caught in it and could not head into the wind, we gave way to it and were driven along. 16 As we ran under the lee of a small island called Cauda, we were able with difficulty to get the ship's boat under control. 17 After the crew had hoisted it aboard, they used supports to undergird the ship. Fearing they would run aground on the Syrtis, they lowered the sea anchor, thus letting themselves be driven along. 18 The next day, because we were violently battered by the storm, they began throwing the cargo overboard, 19 and on the third day they threw the ship's gear overboard with their own hands. 20 When neither sun nor stars appeared for many days and a violent storm continued to batter us, we finally abandoned all hope of being saved. 21 Since many of them had no desire to eat, Paul stood up among them and said, “Men, you should have listened to me and not put out to sea from Crete, thus avoiding this damage and loss. 22 And now I advise you to keep up your courage, for there will be no loss of life among you, but only the ship will be lost. 23 For last night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve came to me 24 and said, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul! You must stand before Caesar, and God has graciously granted you the safety of all who are sailing with you.' 25 Therefore keep up your courage, men, for I have faith in God that it will be just as I have been told. 26 But we must run aground on some island.” 27 When the fourteenth night had come, while we were being driven across the Adriatic Sea, about midnight the sailors suspected they were approaching some land. 28 They took soundings and found the water was twenty fathoms deep; when they had sailed a little farther they took soundings again and found it was fifteen fathoms deep. 29 Because they were afraid that we would run aground on the rocky coast, they threw out four anchors from the stern and wished for day to appear. 30 Then when the sailors tried to escape from the ship and were lowering the ship's boat into the sea, pretending that they were going to put out anchors from the bow, 31 Paul said to the centurion and the soldiers, “Unless these men stay with the ship, you cannot be saved.” 32 Then the soldiers cut the ropes of the ship's boat and let it drift away. 33 As day was about to dawn, Paul urged them all to take some food, saying, “Today is the fourteenth day you have been in suspense and have gone without food; you have eaten nothing. 34 Therefore I urge you to take some food, for this is important for your survival. For not one of you will lose a hair from his head.” 35 After he said this, Paul took bread and gave thanks to God in front of them all, broke it, and began to eat. 36 So all of them were encouraged and took food themselves. 37 (We were in all 276 persons on the ship.) 38 When they had eaten enough to be satisfied, they lightened the ship by throwing the wheat into the sea. 39 When day came, they did not recognize the land, but they noticed a bay with a beach, where they decided to run the ship aground if they could. 40 So they slipped the anchors and left them in the sea, at the same time loosening the linkage that bound the steering oars together. Then they hoisted the foresail to the wind and steered toward the beach. 41 But they encountered a patch of crosscurrents and ran the ship aground; the bow stuck fast and could not be moved, but the stern was being broken up by the force of the waves. 42 Now the soldiers' plan was to kill the prisoners so that none of them would escape by swimming away. 43 But the centurion, wanting to save Paul's life, prevented them from carrying out their plan. He ordered those who could swim to jump overboard first and get to land, 44 and the rest were to follow, some on planks and some on pieces of the ship. And in this way all were brought safely to land.OutlinePaul Sails to RomeLuke narrates the shipwreck with special detailGod wants Paul to go to Rome; Paul is innocentHow It StartedPaul and his companions are assigned to a centurionSailing from Caesarea to Asia MinorPut in at SidonTo Myra in LyciaTransfer at MyraWith difficulty they reached Fair HavensPaul's first warningWinter travel—a dangerous affairLet's winter in Phoenix! To PhoenixHow It's GoingThe weather suddenly changesFind shelter behind Cauda and haul the boat!Anything but the Syrtis!Preparing the ship for the worseAll hope is lostPaul Offers HopePaul rises as a leader and encourages themPaul has had a visionThe ship approaches some landSome sailors attempt to escapeEveryone on board shares a mealDiscarding more cargoLast ditch effort: run the ship agroundThe prisoners are sparedEveryone swims to shore; everyone is saved!

She's also a public speaker, cultural facilitator, curator, choreographer, songwriter, performer and mentor. And it's this all-embracing, boundary-blurring approach to creativity and artmaking that forms the basis of this episode.“For those of us who didn't grow up going to museums and galleries, the art around us is what people are wearing. For us, the museum is the postcard on your fridge, it's the t-shirt you're wearing, it's the sneakers you're wearing”.Originally from Thamesmead in South East London – the iconic brutalist housing estate where A Clockwork Orange was famously filmed – and now based in LA, Shantell is known for her signature, stream-of-consciousness line drawings, murals and ‘who are you?' slogan. Her kaleidoscopic CV has seen her collaborate with brands including Max Mara, The North Face, Tiffany and Co., as well as institutions MIT, The Whitney and Boston Ballet (where she also choreographed) and establish her own podcast series What's the Point? She even has her own open source font ‘Shantell Sans'! And that, if you can believe it, that's just for starters!Having navigated her way through the murky waters of the ‘art' world and got to a place where she now has the creative freedom to explore, in this episode she generously and candidly shares her experiences, learnings and insights picked up along the way. From why every artist needs a cocktail of skills, to what feedback to ignore, Shantell shines a light on the practical, proactive mindset needed to thrive within an opaque system.Follow Shantell @shantell_martin EPISODE INSIGHTSWhat you don't get told about the artists who've “made it” (and the hustling involved)Why you need to trust in your own visionThe value of peer support, mentorship, patronage and anyone fighting your cornerWhy art can exist everywhere, beyond the museum walls and traditional spacesThoughts on the episode? UK angel investors collectively invest £1.5 billion per year and are believed to be the largest source of investment for start-up and early-stage companies. Angel investors can bring cash to your business along with contacts and advice too. In this episode, I hear from Mathilde Lacombe, founder of French skincare and supplement brand AIME. Having previously co-founded beauty subscription service Joliebox, Mathilde founded AIME in 2018 to help others overcome similar skincare challenges to hers. AIME blends nutrition, supplements and cosmetic skincare and, amazingly, achieved €3 million in revenue in its first twelve months. With many founders wondering which type of investor to partner with, Mathilde shares how angel investment has helped her scale AIME and her advice on how to pitch to angel investors. Mathilde's advice:Angel investors tend to be experts in their field, and will be more interested in you as an entrepreneur and what you will bring to that field that's newVCs will be more focussed on the numbers and accurate forecastingWhen pitching to an angel investor it will be important to make an impression as a story-teller and an innovator with a visionThe best angel investors are those who are entrepreneurs themselvesIt's vital that you have a relationship with them in which you are comfortable asking for advice; you need this as much as you need their investmentIdeally you will be able to consult them regularlyMake a list of your dream investors/advisersDon't be afraid to ask for introductions; use LinkedIn and network to try to gain first-hand introductionsBe content with refusals; there is nothing lostDon't waste their time; they are usually busy people with a job as well as an interest in investingAsk outright for what you need; explain that you'll need advice as well as investmentYou can always start with small amounts which may gradually increase if they have confidence in you; you may not need to progress to VC investmentAngel investors will usually understand your long-term vision and be less fixated on end datesFinally, if you don't need investment, don't look for itIf you'd like to contact Mathilde you can reach her on mathilde@aime.coFF&M enables you to own your own PR. Wondering if you should start a private practice so that you can have more flexibility for your family? You're going to love this episode of Private Practice Success Stories!I sat down with Krista Jones to discuss how she did just that. She started her private practice after realizing that the long hours and low pay for her job weren't enough for her family. I've gotten to know Krista during her time in the Grow Your Private Practice Program and it has been amazing to watch her take off and truly build a practice that she loves while having the income and time flexibility that her family needs. In this episode she talks about where she gets most of her referrals- hint: it's a great strategy for pediatric clinicians! She also discusses what she's doing with her clinic space and her plans to hire additional staff so that her clinic can run without her so that she can focus on other aspects of her business and still be there for her family. Krista was born and raised in Southern California and moved to Georgia in August 2022. She started her SLP journey as a CF in an outpatient clinic treating individuals across the lifespan, however, the majority of her caseload was "late talkers" ages 0-3. After 2 years at the clinic, she transitioned to an elementary school in order to spend more time with her children. Krista always knew she wanted to eventually open her own speech clinic, and when she and her family moved to GA, the opportunity presented itself! She started offering free speech and language screenings to preschools and just recently opened her brick-and-mortar! She is looking forward to hiring soon and growing her practice. In Today's Episode, We Discuss:Krista's experience as an SLP and why she decided private practice was right for herHow Krista began to grow her caseload for her private practiceWhere she gets most of her referralsThe clinic Krista opened in order to help even more patientsHow Krista decided how much clinic space she needed for her future visionThe flexibility you get with your private practice to be with your familyThe tragic circumstances that lit a fire under Krista to make her private practice dream a realityKrista's plans for the future of her private practiceI hope you loved this episode with Krista! She is a perfect example of someone who knew that she was stuck in a job that wasn't supporting her and that in order for things to change, she needed to make a change. Let's get started.Brad Crowell 0:59  Hey, Be It family. Brad here stepping in for LL for this week's Fuck Yeah Friday. Welcome back to FYF, where we get to celebrate your wins and then we get to celebrate some wins of ours and talk about why we celebrate wins in the first place. So we have an amazing win from UK, Claire, Claire Sparrow. She's in our agency coaching group. And we just had an awesome opportunity to go over to England to meet up with her and do our mullet tour. Sure, you heard us mention that recently where we visited Scotland and then we went down into England to meet up with Claire. So Claire is from Scotland. And she's been living in England for a really long time. And she had this amazing dream of getting a cottage up in the north of Scotland. And she was finally able to make that happen. So here's what she wrote, "I'm here in Scotland at my cottage that I wrote down to make 2021 that I wanted to create in a year. A year later, we had a place that fell through because the universe just knew it wasn't for us. I really wasn't. It really wasn't for us yet I grieve that loss. And then I dug deeper into raising more funds by investing into further coaching. I upleveled my online offerings. And here we are two years later, exactly two years to the date that I wrote the vision for our Scotland home that we got. I wrote it, I wrote that I wanted it to be a traditional cottage in a village with woodlands, a river and a sea and walking distance and hills, too. By the way, I wasn't asking for too much, LOL. It turns out that's exactly what we got all of it. And today I'm here in the power of the pause I wanted to create, taking the entire month off. And in that vision that we, that the universe provided." So right now she's there for a full month up at her cottage. It's pretty amazing. She said, "And because I had that extra year of digging in and investing, we are now in a better financial position. So we feel even more confident taking the time off and doing some fun renovations to our new place. So today, this is my big win and I am full of gratitude. I also wanted to remind us all about the power of the pause, I have had more clarity and vision for the future in the four days since I've been here than I have had in ages, the space and the pause makes us more creative. It makes us more clear, concise, when we return back to our normal lives." Brad Crowell 3:24  So, Claire, unreal, we're so proud of you, we're so happy for you. I know we celebrated your cottage before, but I love that you took time off for yourself. And in that time off, you actually have been reflective enough to see what that pause, what that space is creating for you. I hope that it's bringing more like rejuvenating you more giving you more excitement and energy to return back home, giving you time to ideate to come up with better plans of how you can serve the people that you're serving, and make their lives better and continue to sell into them. We just love you so much. And we are so excited for you and your family. And maybe someday we'll be able to come see your beautiful space that you're carving out there, way up in the north and Scotland. Unreal, amazing. So excited. Y'all I hope you can see her win and take some of these suggestions in for you and see how they can be applied in your life. Maybe you can take some time off. Maybe you can take even just a day or even just an afternoon and give yourself that mental space to veg out to get caught up. Maybe take a nap. Maybe take a walk. But allow yourself to just think and I know for me, I pack my time so much that I hardly give myself time to think because I'm either listening to a podcast or I'm you know working or I'm you know, I don't know whatever it is. But my day is so, so full all the time that I very rarely give myself just time to pause. Right? And that actually leads me to my win. Brad Crowell 5:09  So, I gave myself this, this is way trivial compared to Claire's, you know, getting a cottage. However, for me, this is a big deal because I never give myself time to pause. I never give myself time. I just don't give myself time. Right? And normally, this is how I get my hair cut. I don't actually cut my hair, I just shave the sides of my head. And Lesley has an amazing hairstylist who's also a barber. And whenever Lesley goes and gets her hair colored, while Lesley's getting her, you know, the dye is of whatever, it's happening. And it takes time, right? 30, 45 minutes, she's sitting there waiting. And in that moment, I hop into the chair. The hairstylist is actually a famous barber, so she zips up the side of my head, gives me a nice haircut. But really, it's just a shave. She's just like, me, me, me, me, me and okay, you're done. You know, and, and that's all the time I ever really leave myself to go get my hair cut. Well, this time, I decided you know what we're about to hit the road, we're about to go on tour. And I want to actually get my hair cut for real, I want to look good, I want to feel good. And on a Saturday afternoon, instead of leaving myself 30 minutes to like, bing, bang, boom, get it done. I just scheduled a hair appointment. And I went in and I didn't have a stop time. And you know, she didn't have another client immediately after me. So we got to take our time and you know, chat and talk about the van being wrapped and do all these fun things. And then sit down and she worked on my hair and there was no rush, there was no stress and giving myself that time to actually get a haircut that I enjoy that makes me feel confident about me. That's my win today. And I hope that you are able to give yourself that same space that time that pause that Claire was talking about that I just inadvertently also gave myself and, and it was really enjoyable. So I hope that you can find something in there for you and schedule yourself an afternoon where you can do some self-care and feel confident about you and enjoying life. So thank you so much for listening, y'all. It's been so fun to do these pods. We love it. Hell yeah, for FYFs. You know, Fuck Yeah Friday. It is time for the weekend, y'all. In this episode, Michael reflects on his experience working with yoga studio owners and the common fears they face, particularly related to showing up on Instagram and in public. He shares his appreciation for podcasts as a platform for genuine conversations and explains why he has avoided solo episodes in the past. However, today he decides to break that pattern and dive into the current landscape of studio owners and their challenges.Michael discusses the unique mix of clients he currently works with, including both new studio owners and those with varying levels of experience. He emphasizes the stark contrast between frazzled studio owners in constant reaction mode and calm, forward-thinking ones. Using Lisa from Tucn Yoga Pod as an example, he highlights the importance of having systems and a team in place that allows for a smoother operation and a more enjoyable work experience. The conversation then shifts to the critical role of teachers in a yoga studio's success. Michael stresses that a studio is only as good as its teachers and emphasizes the significance of a thorough onboarding process and gut instinct when hiring. He advises studio owners to clearly communicate expectations and values to teachers, while also empowering them to be the best they can be. Michael encourages studio owners to support their teachers and help them improve, but also acknowledges that difficult decisions may need to be made if a teacher is not a good fit for the studio's vision. The discussion moves on to the topic of bringing back students to in-person classes, especially in areas like Canada and Australia where the transition has been slower. Michael explores the idea that hybrid and Zoom classes might be hindering the return to in-person experiences for some students. He recounts a conversation with loyal students who expressed a desire for the sense of community and personalized attention that they missed in virtual classes. Michael suggests prioritizing the in-person experience while making adjustments to the camera placement for hybrid classes to enhance the feeling of inclusion for both in-person and virtual participants.Lastly, Michael touches on the importance of building confidence in students and the power of heartfelt communication to encourage them to return to the studio. He emphasizes the need for studios to remind their members about the value of self-care and reestablishing routines post-COVID.Key Points:Contrasting frazzled studio owners with calm and controlled onesThe significance of teachers and the onboarding processSupporting teachers to represent the studio's mission and visionThe impact of hybrid and Zoom classes on returning to in-person experiencesAdjusting camera placement for hybrid classes to enhance inclusivityBuilding confidence and encouraging students to return to the studioMICHAEL JAY YOGA & CONSULTING AND YOGA BIZ CAMPMichael Jay is a yoga studio business consultant and podcast host with a background in marketing and over 13 years of experience owning a successful yoga studio. While warfare used to mean dropping bombs and shooting bullets, modern conflict is increasingly seeing actors targeting an adversaries' critical infrastructure with cyberattacks. The number of cyberattacks on critical infrastructure perpetrated or sponsored by nation-states doubled from 20% to 40% between July 2021 and June 2022, according to Microsoft. The US is particularly vulnerable since the vast majority of critical infrastructure is under private ownership. This makes the implementation of safety standards challenging and complicates the government's task of monitoring and guarding against threats. Enter: Galvanick.Catch-up quick: The LA-based startup, which just announced a $10M seed round, is building cybersecurity solutions to protect industrial infrastructure. Galvanick's first product is an industrial-based XDR platform. Think of it as a system that collects data from different industrial machines and locations to keep an eye out for any potential threats. This allows the operations and computer security teams to understand what's normal behavior—and what isn't—and to quickly see if something is out of whack. First customer? If things in your life look great from the outside, but how you feel inside doesn't match, then this episode is for you. Eric knows exactly what it is like to have a seemingly “perfect” life only to feel turmoil on the inside while going to a job he didn't feel fulfilled in and didn't have control of his own time and what his day looked like. Eric knew there had to be more than the “sad clown” life he was living, so he got clear about his vision for his life, put in the work, and everything changed.Everything you want is possible, but what got you where you are now, won't get you to where you want to be, and Eric wants to show you how he did it so you can know that you can do it too. Chances are you are in a routine, getting up for work and doing the same thing each day, so you might be wondering how you could possibly change that up to get closer to the life of your dreams. It starts with your mind because what your mind can believe and conceive, you can achieve. That might sound simple, but it really comes down to challenging the beliefs we tell ourselves every day and rewiring our brains to believe new ideas about what we can accomplish. Most of us are operating from the same beliefs we formed when we were 7 years old and never stop to think if they are even true. Our beliefs drive our behavior, so if we believe that calling up a potential client is bothering them, then we're going to talk ourselves out of it. If we don't think we are worthy of the life we dream of, we will self-sabotage without even realizing it. Put your beliefs on trial and ask yourself if you are the one thing that is holding you back from reaching what it is you desire. The second you change your belief and start operating from your imagination, your life will change.Key highlights:Eric's experience of working with a life coach and what changed about his lifeGetting clear on your visionThe problem with SMART goalsDon't focus on your actions, focus on your beliefs and understand what you believe and bring the unconscious to the consciousWhen do you have time for yourself?Turning your car into your classroomWhat have you been putting off that you know you need to do but you're scared?Connect with Eric:Be sure to connect with me in the Lead Sell Grow - The Human Experience Mastermind Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/leadsellgrow/Pick up your copy of B2B Sales Secrets HereLearn more about our services: www.TheGoalGuide.comImprove your sales and stay connected – Free Gifts Here https://shor.by/TheGoalGuide

We're all on our own paths in life, and sometimes, despite our best efforts, those paths can seem to twist and turn of their own volition. From uncontrollable factors like your birthplace, your family and your early years to the little decisions we make every day, there are an infinite number of different ways to go in life – and yet, still, many women find themselves boxed into one of a few well-trodden paths. Look closer still, and you'll find that many of those paths can be traced all the way back to the same practices society has been enforcing on us for hundreds – if not thousands – of years. The big question, now, is how can we find the courage to step off the path we've been told to walk and find the one that fits us better – and the answer can be found in the hard-won wisdom of Rebekah Bastian. Rebekah is the CEO and founder of Own Trail – a company dedicated to helping women find, share and celebrate their unique journeys through life. She's also an award winning writer, an artist, a tech executive mentor, a mother and an aerial acrobat. Own Trail is, in essence, part of the antidote to the tired Western way of life that insists five days on, two days off is still the best way – or even the only way – to live and work. Instead, Rebekah embraces big ideas and vision, discussions led by values, and, on occasion, well deserved time out from the busy work of the brain. In this episode of the She Burns podcast, Rebekah shares a host of fascinating insights into her very own “Own Trail”, the steps she has taken to build a company culture that deviates from the hustle, the virtues of the four-day work week, and much more. So what's this episode really about? The importance of having big ideas and visionThe value in building a value-driven company guided by the same “north star” Why every start-up founder needs a community of fellow entrepreneurs What “living your purpose” really looks like The truth about the myth of a “clean, linear path” Why you should listen They say comparison is the thief of joy, and if you've ever had yours unwittingly stolen by another woman – whether it's on social media, in the workplace or in your social circle – this episode (and the OwnTrail platform) is for you. LinksOwn Trail SheShatters You can quote me on that…“We often don't see people who look like us in the places we aspire to. [We go] through these motions of thinking we're supposed to know exactly where we're going and how we're going to get there, and feeling like we get it wrong because we don't see what other people's real journeys look like. Thinking about the power of what it looks like to navigate your career, but as a whole human and really fitting work into your life as opposed to your life into your work – in a way, that can open up a lot more possibilities.” - Rebekah Bastian “I feel like we're at a pivotal point in our universe in our lives – especially as women and men in our mid-40s and -50s, however old we are – where we're wanting something and yearning for something different and something more. It's about figuring out how to align our inner purpose with the work that we're doing to make the world a different place – a better place.” - Hannah AustinLike what you hear? This can lead to poor decision-making or even disagreements over how things should be done.As a church leader, how can you create alignment on your church's foundational elements? The answer lies in having a proper evaluation process in place. You need to evaluate where each aspect currently stands within your church culture and then work together to ensure that each has the necessary clarity and cohesiveness to communicate clearly and effectively across your church community. To better understand how to assess if your church is on the right track with this process, we've invited Chirs Vacher, Church Advisor & Leadership Development Consultant, to share brilliant insights and key questions that will bring clarity on where you are going as a church and what steps you need to take next.“I'm a huge proponent of clarity and inspiration. For me, those are the two ingredients if you want to actually accomplish the thing that you're setting out to do.”-Chris Vacher You must remember that your obedience to God matters most here. If you seek Him first and allow Him to guide your church in these areas, then you can make meaningful progress in growing your ministry. If you're looking for guidance on approaching these important topics and ensuring that everyone in your church is on board with the direction of your ministry—this episode is for you!By the end of this episode, you will learn:The ways to better communicate your church's visionInsights for evaluating the church's mission and visionThe importance of clarity in your church's visionWhy the church needs strategic vision & planningResources Mentioned:Know more about Chris: chrisvacher.comFollow Chris on Facebook: heychrisvacherFollow Chris on Instagram:  @heychrisvacherOther Episodes You May be Interested In:Planting a Church in 2022 with Sam CollierThe Secret to Church Revitalization with Cody EvansFinding Leaders That Fit Your Church Culture with Tim Foot=======Tithely provides the tools you need to engage with your church online, stay connected, increase generosity, and simplify the lives of your staff. With tools like text and email messaging, custom church apps and websites, church management software, digital giving, and so much more… it's no wonder over 37,000 churches in 50 countries trust Tithely to help run their church.Learn more at https://tithely.com

When it feels like you've stretched yourself to the limit trying to make both ends meet while taking care of the nitty-gritty of daily life, you wonder how to even begin to carve out space for your big dreams. Where do you find the energy for that second wind to take the game to the finish line?  There is no shortage of advice when it comes to entrepreneurial hustle, but if you still feel stuck after following them to a T, then you need to take a step back and reassess the fundamentals: Your health, your vision, your energy, your values. People typically equate “doing more” with progress, but this is not always true.  Why does it feel like you're not moving the needle despite your daily efforts? Doing more of the wrong things actually does more harm, particularly to your health, your wellbeing, and your goals. On the contrary, doing more of the right things can catapult you from an uninspiring, and financially challenging spot, to the very peak of Maslow's pyramid — fulfillment. But what ARE the right things?  For this episode, I invited Anna Lundberg- founder of One Step Outside- to talk about the many ways of getting one's self unstuck from an overwhelming and unproductive state, to a higher level of frequency that allows you to achieve greater clarity and focused energy towards your lifelong dreams and goals.  Anna Lundberg is the founder of One Step Outside, where she helps experienced professionals around the world design a career, a business and a lifestyle that brings them more freedom, flexibility and fulfilment - outside of the conventional 9 to 5.  Ex-Oxford and former brand manager & head of digital at Procter & Gamble, today she combines her 10+ years of experience in global branding and digital marketing roles with her training in coaching and positive psychology techniques to help people reimagine the next phase of their career. Anna offers a blend of life coaching and business mentoring on a one-on-one basis and in a group setting. From taking care of yourself to realigning your vision with your values, Anna and I tackle ways in which you can overcome paralysis brought about by the deluge of tasks and ideas that don't seem to get you anywhere.  There is no copy-pasting the definition of success. Its meaning has to tailor fit you, and only you. How change can be successfully implemented within an organization. The steps established by John Kotter to help improve change efforts and avoid pitfalls that often lead to failure. In my organization, we often talk about how change is inevitable in this evolving world of business. The vision of change and understating how to create a sense of urgency can help in establishing a powerful coalition. This coalition requires a clear and concise vision. The communication of this effort will help empower the coalition and plan for short-term wins. Using those wins we can find improvement and perpetuate this change by documenting and solidifying the change. Many companies are facing extraordinary challenges that require flexibility and adaptability. Changing technologies, faster processes, and global business markets are helping to develop new and improved business strategies. In a dog-eat-dog world, it's either change or get left behind.“Life is change. If you aren't growing and evolving, you're standing still and the rest of the world is surging ahead” (Penny, 2008).Companies are responding to a barrage of threats and continue using archaic standardized processes. But what happens when the threat forces change or the standard process no longer works? A business must learn quickly and shift accordingly or face certain extinction. The question of how business is most effective in promoting change requires a simple approach to flexibility. The fundamental steps necessary for any business to make a change would be to focus on the exchanges between leaders and followers that deal with both aspects of transactional and transformational leadership styles. These exchanges must go beyond individual interests in pursuit of a shared vision. These leadership styles are not exclusive nor do leaders necessarily exhibit one more than the other. Depending on the situation, a leader may change and pivot to gain the most traction over the desired behavior (Lumen, 2017).In business, we find that change is inevitable. Change is the evolution of which companies continue to compete, succeed and perform at peak performance. Is all change good or do we just embrace the idea that we should transform regardless of need?  In theory, flexibility and good business practices lean toward a successful transition. A seasoned company may practice certain skills favorable to change. Inevitably, we see businesses using a myriad of change techniques to improve manufacturing, inventory, accounting, sales, operations, procurement, information security or customer service. Processes can be turbulent within a company and use the correct approach to change requires business legerdemain. John Kotter is a leading professor and speaker dedicated to promulgating the efficiencies of successful change transformation and transitioning within an organization. The effectiveness of change within an organization can easily fail and steps can be taken to improve its success (Matsu**bleep**a, 2018). John Kotter focuses on 8 elements of change that contribute to boosting quality and improving the chance of success when implementing change (Kotter, 1996). Establishing a sense of change Forming a powerful coalition within the organization Creating and vision for change Communicating this vision effectively Empowering others on that vision Planning for short-term wins Consolidating and improving change to influence additional change Institutionalizing new approaches The now-retired John Kotter has established himself at the forefront for change management success using these steps.Establishing a Sense of ChangeIt has become common in business that people become complacent to immersing themselves in the very day, mundane routine of their job without thinking twice about how a change would affect their situation. Once companies being to look at their situation and begin to understand that change is inevitable and necessary to be competitive and improving revenue, they begin to take the necessary steps to change. The problem is that many change attempts run into barriers and are stifled by ignorance and surrendering to defeat. When looking at establishing a sense of urgency within an organization, it is imperative to draw attention to those areas where change is a necessary and foster change in perspective that will allow a majority of the organization to feel that change is necessary in order for it to be accepted. The proper steps necessary for succeeding in this first step is to look at the organization as a whole and look at the competition, and the realities endowed by the organization. This will help in identifying and discussing any possible situations that will arise and hone in on potential opportunities at present. This leads to establishing an important coalition for empowering your urgency of change (Kotter, 1996).Establishing a Powerful CoalitionWhen people look at change the idea of change is often met with resistance. This resistance often paralyzes middle and senior management and hinders the transformation process. A network of people within the organization capable of perpetuating the change idea can help to systemically move through each phase of the change process with more success. A top-down approach to assembling your idea for change begins at the top. It is imperative that the senior leaders and people at the top understand that this change is for the betterment of the organization and transforming this requires the support of leaders and managers of expertise. Once a guiding coalition has been established and the leaders and managers are on board with the idea for a change it is important to communicate this vision unambiguously (Kotter, 1996).Creating the VisionIt is difficult to see where you are going without a clear vision. The idea for business change is essentially the same if you are going to be successful in your transition. Without a clear understanding of which direction, the change is going, the picture of what the future would look like without the appropriate changes become myopic and relative to one's own perspective. Sharing this vision is essential in helping leaders and manager perpetuate a re-engineered change that will minimize the chance of failure. Clear concise and unambiguous communication with a systemic vision that can be explained in 5 minutes or less will evoke understanding and interest better than an elaborate and mind-numbing collection of information inundating any possibility of interest (Kotter, 1996).Communicating the VisionCommunication is essential in implanting change. With so many forms of communication and the digital age allowing more people to tap into more forms of communication, we have become lost in front of our computers and tend to avoid face to face contact. Communicating your vision is important to the success of the change. It is important that senior leaders and people who are part of the guiding coalition share the vision. You want to promote the understanding that the foundation for this change requires commitment at all levels of leadership and needs to be embraced in order to focus on the new direction for the organization. Using many forms of communication, in simple and laymen terms will help establish a two-way communication effort that both leaders, managers, and employees can understand in their daily operations and existing processes. Adding additional understanding can be met with stories, metaphors, and examples of compelling changes for the future while helping leadership align with the vision. Use every process and vehicle in your arsenal to perpetuate the continued vision and teach new behaviors through the guiding coalition. This will help managers who can influence employees feel empowered (Kotter, 1996).Empowering Others to Act on the VisionThe empowerment of employees is imperative to the success of preventing and stifling the implementation of change. Employees may understand that change is necessary to move forward with the vision of the organization, but without the proper tools or the necessary equipment to continue the vision of the organization, my unmotivated managers and employees to proceed with the change effort. Understanding that removing obstacles and utilizing all of the vehicles within your prevue will help prevent the unintentional stalling of change even before it beings. It is important to identify any possible barriers that would hinder the change process. This adjustment should include any processes, structures, procedures, and reward systems that would otherwise derail the change effort. It is important to identify behaviors, good or bad, that contribute to the change effort and act accordingly by providing positive re-enforcement and rewarding those that invest in the idea for the new vision. Empowerment will result in the implementation of change and will result in changes. Those short-term wins will help propel you to the next level (Kotter, 1996).Planning and Creating Short-Term WinsEstablishing short-term wins is important in perpetuating the change effort. Short term wins are a continued succession of what the change effort has brought to the organization. These improvements can be seen within 6 to 18 months and it is necessary to continue its momentum by keeping the stakeholders engaged. Identifying the processes and projects that are directly related to the change result in a clear understanding that the change is being effective. These wins can be identified by visible changes that coincide with something specifically being changed in the organization. For example, money savings, the reduction in process time, the additional revenue generate, are examples of specific change efforts that are directly related to the change effort. Identifying these short-term wins may require a reallocation of resources or personnel to continue the change effort and give the guiding coalition the authority to oversee these changes. Continually identify these wins and communicate those wins to senior leadership. We find that short-term wins can give an immediate understanding of the success the change is having and collecting these wins will allow you to implement additional change to further the change effort (Kotter, 1996).Consolidate Improvements and Producing Additional ChangeConsolidating these wins and gains of the change effort will help in implementing additional changes geared toward the change effort. These steps will help prevent the relapse of old behaviors or methods as well as reducing the complacency many have. Highlighting the short-term wins will help re-enforce the idea that the change is working. This will gain leverage for implementing additional changes and persuading leaders, managers, and stakeholders to commit to additional changes. This can help implement processes or procedures that have not become obsolete and removed through departments that may be obstructing or creating a bottleneck in the change effort. Solicit the help of lower-level managers to perpetuate the idea of change and assign lower-level managers to work with guiding coalition projects (Kotter, 1996). This will reassure the participation of lower-level managers and create buy-in for subject matter experts to participate in the change effort. Remove resistant managers who continue to obstruct (Watkins, 2016).Institutionalizing New ApproachesIt is important to document and anchor the change effort. Creating documents, operating instructions and easy to understand information to continue the change effort will solidify the new changes. Additionally, continuing the change effort through the alignment of supervisory operating instructions and using a promotion system to re-enforce the values of the change will help support the continued establishment for the change. This alignment of change and organizational processes will help in adjusting training and essential activates required to sustain the competencies associated with the change.SummaryIt is ultimately up to the individual organization to select the best approach to change. Understanding the steps necessary for a successful change effort can improve the chances for success within an organization. The implementation of change can be difficult. The need for change is evolving as business improves technology, and processes become more competitive. These steps are a giant leap forward in the preservation of changes necessary to gain that edge in an evolving business environment.  Business is turbulent and requires leadership legerdemain. This co-existence of business change, technology, and competition is a continual process ultimately based on organization and vision.ReferencesKotter, J. P. (1996). Leading Change. VISION: Your biggest, boldest goal expressed in as few words as possible.A vision is vital to the forward movement of a company. It is the beacon on the hill. The mission is the path to get to that beacon.Vision is not differentiating but it must be big and bold and visionary. It is almost impossible to create a vision that is too big. Some you may never fulfill, you'll always be reaching for them. The vision is also basically the brand story plot line. The minimum bold vision should push the business at least a few years. Once you get to that strategic achievement, you need to re-vision.EXERCISES FOR CREATING A VISION:*LEGACY EXERCISE: Imagine in the future, you open the New York Times or Wall Street Journal to read a huge profile of your organization. It has closed because it accomplished every goal it set out to achieve and the vision is totally fulfilled. *BLUE SKY EXERCISE: Imagine that you are an entry in Wikipedia and you are totally worthy of it. *FUTURE HEADLINE EXERCISE: Five years from now, the best possible outcome. *FILL-IN-THE-BLANK EXERCISE: We see a world in which _________ happens and enables __________ to happen. And how do we help to create a world in which this can happen? We do these early in a work session, to set the tone and they get everyone away from thinking about the literal Vision Statement.Crafting the vision is not a committee process, it is the work of the leader. There is also a PURPOSE STATEMENT which might not be the vision of the company, but the underlying reason for starting the enterprise.EXAMPLE:Applied Storytelling Vision Statement: To transform markets through the power of storytelling. Purpose Statement: To eliminate barriers to understanding and connection. MISSION: The path to the visionThe mission states your customer and how you deliver value. You may have many kinds of customers and you should describe them by the largest common denominator. EXAMPLE:Applied Storytelling Mission Statement: To enable organizations to achieve key business and market objectives by articulating and activating their brands. We have looked at the V+M for the top 500 companies and most didn't have both and the ones that did have them did not have good ones.Have good brand hygiene!EXERCISES:FILL-IN-THE-BLANK EXERCISE: Who do you sell to? What do you sell them?GETTING TO THE VISION EXERCISE: How do we achieve that bold vision?FIRST DOLLAR EXERCISE: Where is the first dollar you make coming from? Is that where you want your money to comes from? The mission needs to be clear and true, but not necessarily bold and inspiring. It does not need to be a differentiating statement. The mission and vision need to fit together and makes sense as a branded pair. The mission statement is basically an internal tool to make sure you are in stride with your strategic goals.RESOURCES: Jack Welch, WinningWatch: TED Talk: How Great Leaders Inspire Action, Simon SinekSimon Sinek Start With Why
