Skills-based hiring and workforce diversity are important when it comes to performing workplaces. When we focus on hiring based on skills rather than just traditional qualifications, we open the door to a wider pool of talent. How can we make these practices more widespread in our workplaces? In this special episode, I'm joined by Maria Putnam of the DEI Leadership Institute and Stephanie Knight, the CEO of Colorado Inclusive Economy. We discussed the upcoming event on October 11 at the Hyatt Aurora, the 2024 Annual Summit. We talked about the event overview, partnerships, mission, and the progress and challenges in diversity, equity, and inclusion. Don't miss the date—join us! See you there! --- Listen to the podcast here: 2024 Annual Summit: Collaboration of Colorado Inclusive Economy and DEI Leadership Institute with Maria Putnam and Stephanie Knight Welcome to Action's Antidotes, your antidote to the mindset that keeps you settling for less. As you probably know if you've listened to some of my other episodes, I'm based here in Denver, Colorado, and probably about half of my guests are in the area and I do like to promote events that are happening in person, especially events around the things that people around town are doing that they're passionate about. As you know, Denver's a city with a lot of passionate energy, a lot of people that are starting things up, a lot of people that are putting things together, a lot of people that are thinking through the world and how we can kind of even improve upon humanity, to get a little bit woo-woo and high level. One such event coming up in October, I believe in October 11th, is a partnership between Maria Putnam of the DEI Leadership Institute, who you probably already know from one of my earlier podcast episodes, and Stephanie Knight, the CEO of Colorado Inclusive Economy. ---   Maria, Stephanie, welcome to the program.    Thank you.    Thank you.    Yeah.   Yeah, glad to be on.   Well, let's, let's start out by talking about the event in October 11th. What are you putting on? What you were exposing to everyone? And what would people expect if someone might be interested in such an event?    Yeah, well, the event is going to be in October 11, as you said. We're going to be hosting this event at the Hyatt Aurora and we are expecting to have 350 people from all the industries. So, this is a really good event to go and to meet leaders, actually, who are really proactive and working in diversity, equity, and inclusion.    I would just echo what Maria said, it's going to be a wonderful event. It is on the 11th, it's 8 AM to noon, and so, again, it's going to be two distinct tracks of learning with two separate sessions each and we have engaged wonderful subject matter experts to lead these sessions. They're highly topical and things that are on people's mind, like diversity and AI, again, healthcare, inclusion, and scarcity. We're also going to talk about some legal things, not too deep, but talk about with everything that's happening in our larger world around diversity, equity, inclusion, how can companies stay the course and stay safe legally so it'll be a lot for everyone. So excited to host with the DEI Leadership Institute and combine audiences. So we're really excited about it.    And what type of audience are you specifically looking to reach in this event? Is this the CEOs? Is this other leaders, division heads, more kind of small business entrepreneurs? Is there anyone in particular you're looking to reach more with a lot of the advice that you have for these companies?    I will say all together, you just said business owners, CEOs, students, people who's actually doing the work of diversity, equity, and inclusion at whatever capacity they are.    Yeah. It's open to the public. Colorado Inclusive Economy is a membership organization so we engage C-suite leadership and their teammates and what we...

In "The Guarantee," Natalie Foster argues that our current economic system is failing too many Americans, despite signs of growth. As millennials and Gen Z build wealth amidst the greatest transfer of wealth in history, stubborn pockets of economic stagnation persist. Foster explores what it would take to create an economy that works for everyone, questioning whether the government should guarantee basic rights like housing, healthcare, education, and a living wage. Drawing on mainstream and heterodox ideas, she passionately argues for a radical rethinking of the relationship between government, the economy, and the people, viewing guaranteed economic rights as an urgent necessity.

What role should the office play, and can companies create equitable and sustainable WFH policies that work for all employees? Rotman's Sarah Kaplan and Carmina Ravanera weigh in on the future of hybrid work. Show notes[0:00] In 2020, the world embarked on the great work-from-home experiment. And while as of 2022, businesses have called people back to the office, a big question mark remains[0:41] Meet Sarah Kaplan and Carmina Ravanera from the Institute for Gender and the Economy, who explored the tension between what workers and businesses want and need when it comes to a remote work policy[2:10] It turns out remote work can work. But businesses need to make it work for everyone[2:35] Keep in mind the people who can't work from home[3:24] But for those who can, there are compelling financial upsides for employees – particularly for Black and LatinX employees – when allowed to work from home[4:09] Remote work can also reduce workplace micro-aggressions and discrimination[5:02] And WFH are really beneficial for those in caregiving roles[5:34] But despite the benefits, companies can't use a WFH policy on its own to make the workplace more equitable[6:01] What's the ideal worker, and why is it detrimental to people who can't dedicate their whole selves to their jobs [6:41] There's a persistent myth that remote workers aren't as dedicated as those who come into the office. The ideal worker is one who shows up [6:54] And women and people of colour are more likely to suffer from these misconceptions[7:16] Remote work policies that focus on employee monitoring can exacerbate mental health issues and company trust issues [8:02] You can't just plonk a remote work policy onto an old system. To make it work, businesses will have to rethink the system[8:36] The problem is that change is just hard. And leaders don't always have time to think meaningfully about an equitable system redesign [9:09] But there are upsides, particularly for companies looking to improve inclusion efforts[10:46] And with employers in a war for talent, it's worth looking at creating a solution for everyone [11:35] Companies need to make the office worth their employees' time [11:55] Hotelling doesn't need to be a bad word. Letting employees make the trade off might be key[13:01] What role to offices play in our social lives?[13:20] Leaders should introspect on why people don't want to come back[13:45] Effective and equitable remote work policies need government and societal support to change underlying gender and racial inequalities as well[14:19] It's part of a holistic conversation. “Building trust in organizations is extremely difficult, and it's easy to erode. And so I think we are at a time where the role of the leaders, anybody who has other people who work for them,  supervisors all the way up to CEOs, their role in terms of being culture creators, and maintainers is going to become even more important.”

In this short podcast, Reima Shakeir reflects on the current state of belonging and inclusion in business and academia. Reima sees a shared sense of belonging as the hallmark of advanced societies and communities - and the key to employee retention and happiness. As she says, "People want to be heard and to be seen - and that's it." She reflects on systems that are still nonetheless designed for exclusion and on those that exclude due to institutional carelessness or lack of awareness on the part of the leadership. In this conversation, we explore what's working, why and where there is pushback. What are some of the simple things that organisations are doing that make a difference? Reima reflects on the fear of getting things wrong, especially when it comes to language and the need to gather hard data to support changes in the system. Finally, she sees real-world person-to-person connection as the new frontier for great organisations – and brands - where the creation of a sense of belonging makes perfect commercial sense as well. Reima Shakeir is a lecturer at Wharton School of Business and Stern School of Business. Dr. Shakeir teaches Organizational Communication and Business and Society courses at NYU's Stern School of Business. In this episode of Work in Progress, I'm joined by Daniel Ferguson, the director of workforce development at the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator (LACI), a nonprofit organization that incubates promising cleantech startups in underserved communities and then helps to develop the local L.A. green jobs workforce through training and internships. "There are two working definitions for green jobs. One is an actual company that has sustainable practices to be able to create a green product, and then the other, of course, is just an actual company that has a green product to be able to help to reduce greenhouse emissions and pollution," explains Ferguson. LACI focuses on startups working on clean energy; smart, sustainable cities; and zero emissions transportation. The ultimate mission is to bring more green jobs to workers and communities that haven't always had representation in the tech industry. Ferguson says its important that for the cleantech industry to realize there are hidden treasures within local BIPOC communities that can help these companies grown. "Giving startups exposure to our talent pipeline and seeing how well they can actually develop an idea and be able to work for an organization is really helping to change that narrative. Diversity, equity, and inclusion is very important to us. The purpose of our workforce development program is to provide individuals from underrepresented communities with experiential training and industry recognized credentials to get them into the green workforce." Career Exploration, Boot Camps, Credentials, and Internships LACI recruits from local community based organizations, local work source centers, community colleges and universities, and word of mouth. Once someone signs up for the workforce development program, they spend the day learning about green job opportunities. "Clean tech, for some, it's attractive, and for others, it's this interesting concept that some folks might not be aware of. We believe that introducing them to clean technology is important. Throughout the career expiration day, we're providing individuals with the opportunity to learn about clean tech, also understand career pathways and introduce them to our LACI ecosystem and our startups. We believe that exposure is key," Ferguson tells me in the podcast. "The ultimate goal is not only helping them to realize some of the career opportunities that can come out of participating in our workforce development program, but also some of the other opportunities to become an actual founder and to have your own cleantech idea and help them to see how realistic it could be for them to become a founder and provide solutions in their local community as well," he adds. The career day is followed by a technical boot camp. "That is what I call the nuts and bolts of our actual program, where individuals learn from industry practitioners that are experts in the actual area in which we're training. This technical boot camp can range from two weeks, all the way up to eight or 10 weeks. It just depends on the particular theme that we're focusing on for the respective cohort. "They then go into an internship program with our local startups, our partner organizations, where they get three months of hands-on experience to really apply all the things that they've learned throughout the technical boot camp. They also receive a stipend to be able to help them with living expenses as they go through the three-month internship. "Technically, it's part-time. We do encourage our participants to take advantage of 20 hours a week. That way, there's a work and life balance so that they get the experience or training that they need in hopes that once they complete after three months, they can transition right into full-time employment with the startup, or either partner organizations, or perhaps other organizations that might be in our ecosystem." Ferguson says while the current program focuses on underrepres...

Having served at the highest levels of government in the State Department, the White House, and Capitol Hill, Higginbottom is one of the country's leading experts on a range of domestic, economic, foreign, and budget policy issues.   In this conversation, Higginbottom explains how the PolicyCenter allows JPMorgan Chase to work on a variety of issues related to a more inclusive economy, drawing on the firm's expertise, experience, and resources — its unique insights, perspectives, learnings, and assets — including original research through the JPMorgan Chase Institute and its global philanthropy and business and investment expertise. These include a number of areas of the firm has focused on historically, including neighborhood development (i.e., affordable housing), jobs and skills, small business and access to capital, and significant new commitments related to inclusive growth, including its recent $30 billion commitment to advance racial equity, reduce systemic racism, and help close the racial wealth divide. Using the example of the PolicyCenter's Second Chance initiative, an effort to reduce barriers to employment for people with criminal records, Higginbottom describes how JPMorgan Chase works on these issues within the firm — and with partners like the Business Roundtable and others at the industry level, including, in this case, the recently launched Second Chance Business Coalition.   Thanks for listening!Subscribe to Capital for Good on Apple, Amazon, Google, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Rodney Foxworth says the racial “wealth gap” is a misnomer because it implies something that's achievable to close. “Wealth chasm” is more on the nose since we're talking about disparities created by centuries of oppression. Growing up in Baltimore, Rodney witnessed firsthand what many Black and brown communities face in America—systemic racism, over policing, economic dislocation. Now, as CEO of Common Future, he draws on that lived experience to create a network of organizations across the country that builds relationships and economic power in historically exploited communities.  In the wake of the pandemic and the death of George Floyd, Common Future redistributed 10 percent of its operating budget—in one week—into a rapid COVID response fund. Meanwhile larger, deep-pocketed foundations struggled to spring into action. What can wealthy, predominantly white organizations learn from Common Future's community-based approach? Americans are reeling from an economic shutdown that's pushed many out of the workforce, and widened the gap between the wealthy and the poor. In this brave new post-Covid world, can President Biden step up where Obama couldn't?  “I'm delighted about what I'm seeing from the Biden-Harris team,” notes Donnel Baird, CEO of BlocPower. “Climate justice and racial equality are wedded together alongside employment, alongside public health and working our way out of these kinds of four simultaneous crises we're dealing with.” From big tech to clean energy, what are the opportunities for scaling new solutions — and where do inequity and politics continue to set us back? “But let me offer you my definition of social justice: I keep what I earn and you keep what you earn. Do you disagree? Well then tell me how much of what I earn belongs to you - and why?” ― Walter E. WilliamsI am eager to welcome the Cato Institute's Michael Tanner back to the show of ideas to discuss his recent blog post sketching the contours of a libertarian “anti-racist” policy agenda.Last time he joined the show, we discussed his book The Inclusive Economy, which I called “the definitive book on libertarian anti-poverty policy.” This Sunday, we will focus specifically on those laws which disproportionately harm minorities in the United States, and why a subtractive approach that leaves people “free to choose” is superior to new policies rife with unintended consequences. Tanner will explain why libertarians should embrace the banner of anti-racism, albeit by proposing alternative means to achieve it than the usual Social Justice Warrior's approach.I will also use the opportunity to celebrate the life of Walter E. Williams (1936-2020), the George Mason University economics professor, whose teaching brought clarity, wit and wisdom to bear on the subjects of social justice and anti-racism. Williams, perhaps more than any other figure, understood the market's power to conquer artificial barriers like racial discrimination. Walter's passing is huge loss for classical liberals, but his legacy lives on in the work of scholars like Michael Tanner.Join our conversation live this Sunday (12/6), at 8am PACIFIC time. As always, your calls are welcome.Benjamin Franklin once said: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."

Pope Francis is very passionate about this issue and has recently sent an http://www.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/letters/2019/documents/papa-francesco_20190501_giovani-imprenditori.html (open letter to young men and women studying economics) to "change today's economy and to give a soul to the economy of tomorrow." A different kind of economy "one that brings life not death, one that is inclusive and not exclusive, humane and not dehumanizing, one that cares for the environment and does not despoil it." What does Pope Francis mean by this "different kind of economy"? Can its features be really relevant in the business world? How can they impact and change the everyday working experience of workers and entrepreneurs? Speakers will discuss these questions in a dialogue with young workers and entrepreneurs.
