Fran Whitfield is a London based personal trainer who, at age 25, learned she has breast cancer that had metastasized to her brain and was given a prognosis of 2 years to live. Unwilling to settle for such a grim diagnosis, Fran sought the help of a care team who was willing to fight the disease with her. She credits her hedge of fitness with helping her recover quickly from brain surgery, and her current fitness routine with protecting her mental and physical health as she manages the side effects of chemotherapy. Throughout her treatment, Fran has candidly documented her experiences to help spread awareness to other young people. She hopes that by sharing her journey she can reduce the fear of the unknown that so many people experience as they battle cancer. I first heard Fran's story on a panel discussion at the CrossFit Games, and I was immediately struck by her resilience in the face of such a scary diagnosis. Her mental fortitude as she advocates for herself and keeps her focus on the variables within her control is nothing short of remarkable. Scott Britton is the founder of Battle Cancer, a non-profit that uses functional fitness events to raise funds for cancer charities, as well as provides free training programs to help cancer survivors thrive post-treatment. Originally a small, personal fundraising initiative, Scott quickly recognized that when it came to creating a big impact, there is strength in numbers. He recruited others and worked hard to grow Battle Cancer into a huge movement that has raised over $1.4 million and hosted events across Europe and in the US. Most recently, Battle Cancer has formed an official partnership with CrossFit and sits poised to become an even bigger global phenomenon as it leverages the CrossFit community to create powerful bonds and relationships that support cancer survivors. In this episode, Scott shares how he became so passionate about the fight against cancer, the benefits of using movement as medicine, and his dream of developing a network of fitness professionals and affiliates who are trained to support those affected by this pervasive disease. Seemingly healthy and in his late thirties, Robert Oh was shocked when routine blood work showed that he was prediabetic. He was at a healthy weight, did CrossFit 3-4 times per week, ate mostly healthy foods, and worked as a military family physician. He had no family history and no risk factors, and he had no intentions of starting the metformin recommended by his colleagues. The more he researched, the more Dr. Oh began to believe that a statin medication he had been taking for 10 years contributed to his insulin resistance. Instead of adding another pill to his daily routine, Dr. Oh decided to drop the statin and experiment with his nutrition. He ultimately adopted a Paleo/low carb diet and saw dramatic improvements in the way he felt, his waist circumference, and his blood markers. Not only did this approach help Dr. Oh reverse his prediabetes, the changes inspired him to pursue a fellowship in Sports Medicine so that he could help others like himself- in the military and unknowingly having insulin resistance- heal through lifestyle medicine as well. Two-Brain Radio: From $260 in Ads to $5,000 in Front-End Sales With Rachael O'DonnellIn September 2017, Rachael O'Donnell took the leap: She quit her job as a clinical social worker and closed her private practice to open Grit and Grace CrossFit in Gorham, Maine. Her social-work experience added tremendous value to what she had to offer as a coach, employer and leader, but she lacked the business skills she needed for her business to truly thrive. She was also uncomfortable with sales and marketing. After joining the Two-Brain family, Rachael learned how to offload low-value tasks so she could focus on the business—and she gained a new perspective on marketing: It's just helping people who need it.Links:https://fortimedesign.com/https://gritandgracecrossfit.com/Contact:https://gritandgracecrossfit.com/Instagram: @gritandgracecrossfitTimeline:3:35 – Using CrossFit to quit smoking.4:25 – From clinical social work to coaching CrossFit.6:13 – How Rachael’s social-work background helps her as a coach and leader.7:49 – Why “Grit and Grace”?8:51 – Turning to Two-Brain after working 90-plus-hour weeks.12:13 – The first payoff: getting time back and getting closer to Perfect Day.14:52 – On hiring coaches.18:28 – When evaluating new or potential staff, watch what they do, not what they say.20:13 – Grit and Grace core values.22:11 – Implementing core values into if-then scenario practice.25:23 – Turning $260 in ad spend into $5,000 in front-end revenue.26:53 – Leads are just people who need help.28:24 – Overcoming discomfort with the sales process.30:55 – The key to success: knowing when you need help.

One day you might look up to find yourself on a path of self-destruction. Everywhere you turn, you are met with another disappointed face from a friend or family member. You don’t want to hurt them but you don’t know how to stop. The allure of the temporary escape of our traumas override any logical reasoning. It is not until we reach our darkest moment, where we are faced with the decision to either keep doing what we’ve always done until we’ve lost ourselves completely, or to open our heart, turn within, and find the strength inside to take the first step forward. From ages 23 to 25, Brittany Parsons burned through $30,000 on alcohol and drugs. Her home that she bought was on the verge of foreclosure. She started to lose healthy relationships with friends and family, including her sister. By age 27, Brittany was told that her liver is dying. She was told she has a 60% chance of surviving if she continues down the path she is on. She went home, and picked up another bottle. Her friends tried to have an intervention. Her family tried to convince her to go to rehab, to no avail. Brittany couldn’t see herself sitting in an AA meeting, being part of a community she didn’t believe in at the time. She didn’t believe she had a problem. Finally, one night, she decided to go to the bar one last time. She called her dad drunk, and said, “I think this is my last drink”. In this podcast, you will hear how Brittany Parsons, certified CrossFit trainer and Breakthrough Life Coach rewrote her story. How she went from having nothing, and not believing that she deserved to have anything, to having everything her heart wanted. It took hard work, dedication, and courage. Now, she is a vision of strength for so many others trying to rewrite their own stories. I love every conversation I have with Jason and I was especially lucky to have recorded perhaps my favorite conversation with him thus far. We dive into a ton of topics, but the theme of the conversation is really about self improvement. As CrossFit coaches, both Jason and I see CrossFit as an important avenue towards self improvement. In this podcast we breakdown how we use CrossFit specifically at Old City as a method to move ourselves towards health by focusing on fitness, nutrition, stress management and sleep. The first 80% is fairly tactical, filled with ideas and approaches to move yourself in a healthier direction. The final 15 minutes is me and Jason pontificating the hero’s journey and what that means for our lives and how we want to live. I really hope you enjoy: [0:00] Jason’s life as a beer sales rep for Port City and a fitness enthusiast and coach. [7:30] Jason and Sean talk about their approach to nutrition and eating healthy, and give a lot of practical guidance to eat for weight loss, strength gain, and health. [53:00] Approaches to make improvements on your health, by focusing on your weaknesses as opportunities for growth. [58:00] Stress management - a little background on stress and what to do to reduce stress to live life in better balance. [1:16:20] Sean and Jason chat technology and offer some ideas on how to reduce it’s power on our stress. [1:33:25] The podcast ends. SIKE! [1:33:35] Jason and Sean talk about the Hero’s Journey and things get deep. Hopefully the theoretical thoughts we explore come across as informed and thoughtful :)
