This year, six of Canada's ten provinces and one of it's three territories have held or will be holding municipal elections. It's a level of governance that tends to get the least amount of engagement from Canadians, and yet it's also the one that can most directly affect our lives. So what do our city councils do for us? Why do we pay so little attention? Why is turnout so low? And what might be done to increase turnout in elections coming up this fall? Host Caryn Ceolin speaks with John Michael McGrath, a writer and host at TVO about the importance of municipalities, and why we seem to care so little about them. Anne McEnerny-Ogle's 48-second statement to the Regional Transportation Council exposed a major shift in the Interstate Bridge Replacement Program's light rail plans. While officials celebrated a $7.65 billion bridge project last month, they quietly revealed that light rail would only reach Vancouver's waterfront — requiring a 70-foot elevator for commuters. The mayor now wants to extend service to Library Square to connect with C-TRAN buses, questioning why this change wasn't disclosed during Governor Ferguson's victory lap. State Representative John Ley calls the lack of transparency part of a pattern that has kept taxpayers in the dark about exploding costs and shifting transit plans. https://www.clarkcountytoday.com/news/vancouver-mayor-counters-ibrs-proposal-for-the-only-light-rail-stop-to-be-at-the-waterfront/ #IBR #LightRail #Vancouver #Transportation #ClarkCounty #Politics #Transit #BridgeReplacement #PublicTransit #CTran

In her State of the City address last month, Vancouver Mayor Anne McEnerny-Ogle touted the city’s rapid growth and development since she was first elected to the city council more than a decade ago. But with that growth comes challenges for Washington’s fourth-largest city. In the past decade, homelessness has increased by more than 250%, prompting city officials to declare a state of emergency to streamline responding to this crisis. Last year, voters approved a new property tax levy that is expected to raise $100 million over 10 years to shore up the city’s Affordable Housing Fund. Meanwhile, hundreds of new housing units are being planned for the Heights District, a neighborhood redevelopment project in central Vancouver. Mayor McEnerny-Ogle joins us to talk about her vision for the city’s future, the challenges it faces and reflections on her past decade in city government.
