“The Girl Boss in the sausagefest” Pitface and Tantz chat are here to chat with me about the subject or lady Barbarians: What they look like, where they originated, why they originated, what they mean, and the logic behind them. They're often overshadowed by their male counterparts (e.g. Conan), and often dismissed as simply an erotic male fantasy, but they've been around just as long and they've also had just as much of a role to play in the traditional “barbarian” mythos as the male versions. Sure, the sexy versions are abundant, iconic, and visually striking, but they're not the be all and end all! This Quackcast was inspired by the topic of my 8th Fashion Spotlight and its focus on the barbarian woman Rose Red, I go into a lot of detail there and it's linked bellow if you're interested. for a little bit of a recap: lady barbarians go back at least as far as the Roman empire, even older possibly. In Rome they took the form of “gladiatrixes” (female gladiators), who were dressed as and promoted as barbarian fighters from exotic, uncivilised lands (Africa, all over Europe etc), as a way to excite the interest of the paying public to pay to see the fights, the same as we'd do today with wrestling and MMA. Many influences were behind this: the myth of the Amazons, the myth of Atalanta, red haired Celtic queen Boadicea, even early ideas for what was behind the myth of Medusa - she was thought to be based on the queen of a barbarian tribe rather than Ovid's much later idea that she was a virgin temple priestess. But of course most of us know female barbarians because of their modern incarnations. They've always been around in the history of art but they had a spike in popularity with the Italian “Sword and Sandal” movies of the 1960s, then the art of fantasy art master Frank Frazetta in the 1970s. They found their way into things like Dungeons and Dragons and with the success of Conan the Barbarian and the Robert E Howard inspired Valeria in that film a whole host of lady barbarians got their own films, often exploitative and sexy. The most famous lady barbarian of the time was Red Sonja, loosely based on another Robert E Howard character called Red Sonya, but turned from an armoured fighter against the Ottoman Turks into a scale-mail bikini wearing comic book barbarian woman from prehistory. The most famous lady barbarian to come after her was Xena, the warrior princess, played by statuesque New Zealand sketch comedian Lucy Lawless. Xena was simply a female spinoff from Hercules The Legendary journeys. The really cool thing about her is that not only did she achieve extreme popularity and her show totally eclipsed its originator, she was also an original character AND she got that popularity without leveraging the sexiness of the premise or character! Some notable lady barbarians I can think off… Virginia Hey's Warrior Woman, Tina Turner's character, and Furiosa from the Mad Max 2, 3, and 4 respectively; Lady Death; Red Sonja; Grace Jone's character from Conan the Destroyer; Valeria (Sandal Bergman) from Conan the Barbarian; Queen Boadicea; Xena; Betty Paige's Cheetah woman (her look was probably an inspiration for Xena in some ways); Ygritte from Game of Thrones; Atalanta; Princess Merida of Brave; I even created my own version in a Barbarian Pinky TA! Who are your faves from the this genre? This week Gunwallace has given us the theme to Creeping through the desert ruins, not wearing overly much, heat hits like a wall, golden sun dazels and mystifies. From plucked strings to creepy atmospherics, the sound bursts in a bombastic wave of high energy multilayered noise and exotic sounds, with pounding percussion. In the eighteenth episode of Season 5 (Dystopia Myopia) Kyle is joined by actor Ben McGinley and filmmaker Connar Quigley to discuss the heroic journey of survivalist man into a ronin of the apocalypse in George Miller's continuation in the adventures of his mono-syllabic vengeance filled protagonist in Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior.
In this stunning piece of backlog content, Brad & Sophia delve into and tangent off from discussing Pa'u Zotoh Zhaan as portayed by legendary actor Virginia Hey. Non-human creature design, self-authored (?) IMDB bios, and the intricacies of icy intimacy and more are covered in this astonishing installment. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/monsterfwb/message
It's The Daylights... The Living Daylights! With a US release date of the 31st of July, 1987, this James Bond movie was the introduction of Timothy Dalton in the lead role. It's a slightly more grounded adventure compared to the previous era of the franchise but still has all the classic one-liners, action set-pieces, and green flags. After the ApocalypseA pandemic survival storySeason One, Episode Twenty - “The Road Ahead”“Ear Wax.” The old man said. “Here we go again...” Janet rolled her eyes and lay back against the rock outcrop using her pack as a rough pillow. She arched her back like a cat, stretched her arms out over her head and relaxed to look at him. “No, seriously…” The old man continued, “How do you deal with ear wax in the apocalypse? You can't see into your own ears…” “I'm not touching your disgusting old ears.” Janet responded, hoping this was the end of this particular conversation. They were on a bluff a couple hundred feet above the river. She looked down and across the muddy flow at the smoke rising from another burning town. The bridge spanning the watercourse was dotted with abandoned cars and trucks. The trailer of an 18-wheeler was sticking half out of the water, near one shore, jammed against a bridge pylon. ...S1 E20 - Outro So here we are my survivor friends. The end. But, it's not the end. Think of it like those old SciFi movies where they'd put up the words “The End” and then tag a question mark onto it. Don't worry it's not a question. “We'll be back.” It's one of the strange ironies of these stories is that the more you do it the more ideas you have. It's like a perpetual motion machine. Because I am super psyched! Really. I am so pleased with the way this season came out. I am in love with these characters and their arcs. I'm in love with this universe that we've created. I'm in Love with Robert's audio performance. It really came together and beat all my expectations. And you! Nothing happens unless you show up my survivor friends. I am so grateful for your attention, especially in this attention scarce world that we live in. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I just went over to A-cast and checked; we're at 13,000+ downloads. Which is amazing. Thank you to all of you who have left a review or shared the show with your friends. I hope you've noticed that I've tried to keep the narrative smart. Not just string together action and dialogue. Assume that you folks don't need me to explain everything. I can reference history, or philosophy or literature and you are going to get it. So, again, thank you for being a smart audience. Pat yourself on the back. You earned it. Hopefully you liked episode 20. I know it was dialogue heavy. I wanted to fill in some gaps and cement the journey of these three characters. Coming up in season 2 we'll introduce some new characters, and we'll raise the stakes as this universe starts to coalesce into centers of gravity. I did a fun interview with Mike from the Apocalypse Post podcast this weekend. We had a blast talking about the characters and the show. I'm going to get the recording of that and we'll stick it on the feed here so that you can listen to it. Hey Mike, thanks for having me. His universe is more of a Mad Max universe. I remember Mad Max. I actually saw the Road Warrior first, which was Mad Max 2. It had everything a good apocalypse movie should, a good anti-hero, a dog and lots of action in the wastelands. Road Warrior was a great movie. I loved it. Mad Max was a pretty good movie too. The original Mad Max movie cost $200k to make and made $13M. That makes it one of the most profitable movies of all time. I guess there is money to be had in the apocalypse. Anyhow, Mike and a few thousand others get costumed up like Mad Max characters and go out into the desert to a festival called “Wasteland”. If any Wastelanders are listening – welcome thanks for spreading the word, have fun this year, it's coming up in 10 weeks. I'll give you a little fan-boy trivia. There was a role in the Road Warrior called warrior woman that was played by Virginia Hey who was also the blue skinned alien Zotoh Zhaan in the cheesy SciFi show FarScape. Next up I'm going to hit ‘pause' on the show production for a couple months. We're sitting at the middle of July 2021, Let's shoot for starting Season 2 in September. So don't' delete us, stay in touch. In the meantime, I'm going to convert season one into a book, e-book and audio book, if I can swing it. I'll be posting various progress reports and looking for help from readers and spell checkers on our Facebook page. Join me - “OldManApocalypse”. As always I am working to a tight budget, like the first Mad Max film! – so if you can go to the Patreon page for After the Apocalypse and throw me some money it makes everything easier. Just to be fully transparent, we are not talking about a lot of money here, but currently the variable costs per show are about double the income. As they say in the startup world – we've got a negative burn rate. With your help I can turn that around! That's it for this season my friends. I feel a bit sad having to say goodbye to you for a couple months. Don't worry, we'll find a way to fill in some of that dead space. So chin up, one foot in front of the other, and above all else – Keep surviving! Get bonus content on Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

On this epic episode of The Projection Booth, we remember the road warrior, the man we called Mad Max. In the roar of an engine, he lost everything and became a shell of a man, a burnt-out desolate man, a man haunted by the demons of his past, a man who wandered out into the wasteland. And it was here, in this blighted place, that he learned to live again. Ben Buckingham and Mike Thompson join Mike White to discuss the ever-shifting landscape of George Miller’s Mad Max series from its audacious beginning as a bikie exploitation / revenge Mad Max (1979) to the post-apocalyptic Western Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981) to the troublesome Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) and concluding (?) with the spectacular Mad Max: Fury Road (2015). Interviews feature actors from three of the four films — Roger Ward, Vernon Wells, Virginia Hey, Bruce Spence, Hugh Keays-Byrne — as well as author Luke Buckmaster, author of Miller and Max.

The Doctor Who: Alhambra Podcast is very fortunate to have Louise Jameson on the podcast for about an hours time. We talk to her about acting, her time on Doctor Who in the 70's, her work as an actor, writer and director with Big Finish. Some of the people she worked with, such as Virginia Hey (4th Doctor Adventures: White Ghosts; Farscape) and Sir John Hurt (The War Doctor - Series 4: Casualties of War). Her time with Tom Baker in the 70's and some cast spoilers but no story line spoilers for a future Fourth Doctor Adventure featuring the Doctor and Leela. We had a great time, and are very thankful for the time Louise Jameson took out of her busy schedule to appear on our podcast. Episode 5.17: Mad Facts In which Mike Royce announces the sequel to Birdman, developes a bizarre speech impediment, and definitely doesn’t cut the mustard. Martin Unsworth continues to refuse to eat pretty much anything, devalues Simon Pegg, and invites everyone to ditch the mainstream. Virginia Hey from Mad Max 2 makes a guest appearance, Mad Men comes to an end, Home launches in Manchester, and the big title reveal of the next Mad Max movie doesn’t exactly go to plan... With the international popularity of “Mad Max,” George Miller was excited to get back into the driver’s seat and continue with his hero as he wandered the dystopian wastes of Australia looking for fuel. It was a smart move as “Mad Max 2,” or “The Road Warrior” as it was released in the States, not only did well at the box office but helped build the cult following of this franchise. Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we continue our Mad Max series with 1981’s “Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior.” We talk about the fundamental differences in the types of story between the first and second film, and how Pete gravitates toward the familial connections in the former while Andy gravitates toward the redemption in the latter. We chat about the great cast — Bruce Spence, Michael Preston, Max Phipps, Vernon Wells, Kjell Nilsson, Virginia Hey and of course Mel Gibson — and how they fit in mess of a future. We talk stunts and car chases — of course — and how Miller really stepped it up for this film, culminating in a 13-minute tanker chase at the end. And we look at the costume design and how it’s evolved from the first film to this. We love the film, despite our differences about which is better, and have a great talk about it this week. Tune in!
