For several years, he was also a warmup comedian for such shows as The Maury Povich Show, Viva Variety, and Spin City. In 1997, he got his first job as a writer on MTV's Apartment 2F, which starred Randy and Jason Sklar. In 1999, Royce joined the writing staff of Everybody Loves Raymond, where he eventually worked his way up to the position of executive producer for the last two seasons. In 2005, Louis C.K. asked Royce to be the executive producer and show runner of a new sitcom, HBO's Lucky Louie.[1] In 2008, TNT ordered a pilot for a new series written by Royce and Ray Romano.[5] By January 2009, TNT had ordered 10 episodes for the new series Men of a Certain Age, which premiered on Monday December 7, 2009 at 10:00.TNT picked up Men of a Certain Age for a second season as the ratings have increased with men in the age demographic of 25 to 54. On July 15, 2011, TNT cancelled the series after two seasons. In 2017, One Day at a Time premiered on Netflix starring Justina Machado and Rita Moreno. A reimagining of the 1975 Norman Lear sitcom, Royce co-created the 2017 version with Gloria Calderon Kellett. He is executive producer and co-showrunner of the series, alongside Ms. Kellett. In 2011, Mike Royce and his Snowpants Productions company signed a deal with 20th Century Fox Television. He produced two shows for his Fox deal, 1600 Pennand Enlisted. It later joined Sony Pictures in an overall deal and developed a failed CBS pilot. It's TV staffing season: when writers look for jobs. But this year, writers have fired their agents in their battle over packaging fees. Still, showrunners Mike Royce and Valentina Garza say the seats in the writers rooms will be filled. They tell us about building a writing staff without agents, and Royce gives us an update on 'One Day at a Time.'

Off Camera with Sam Jones

Before Ray Romano graced our television sets with Everybody Loves Raymond, he was a hustling stand-up comedian, hoping to break into television like his peers Jerry Seinfeld, Tim Allen, and Rosanne. He followed all the proper steps—performing on late night television, selling out road gigs, and getting featured in HBO comedy specials—but radio silence was all he got from the powers that be. After eleven years as a full-time stand-up, Ray realized, “Maybe this acting thing just isn’t meant to be.” But that’s exactly when he got offered the development deal that would turn into the hit show Everybody Loves Raymond, and make Ray not only the highest paid actor in sitcom history, but one of the most recognized people in the world. Despite all of his success and fame, Ray dealt with an unexpected identity crisis when Raymond ended. “It took about three months until the void smacked me in the head. It was this sense of, ‘What now? Where’s my passion? Where’s my direction? What am I throwing all my energy into now?’ I had this non-stop creative energy for nine years. And suddenly, I was empty.” But working through the existential void turned out to be a blessing in disguise. It’s what led to the creation of Men of a Certain Age, the show Ray co-wrote with his friend Mike Royce, and it led to a desire to flex his acting muscles in other, more dramatic areas. Getting people to see him as more than a sitcom actor was difficult, especially after spending nine years in the shoes of one character that was loosely based on himself. “I didn’t want to make everyone forget about my sitcom legacy, because I was proud of it, but my goal was to do what I wanted—and what I wanted was to stick my little dramatic toe in there.” Since he made that decision, he’s evolved into a versatile and relatable dramatic actor with his work in projects like Parenthood, Vinyl, Get Shorty, The Big Sick, and most recently, Paddleton, opposite Mark Duplass. Ray joins Off Camera to talk about the first and only time he was fired, how he turns real life into a comedic bit, and why it’s so hard for some men to say, “I love you.”

This week we're bringing you two of our favorite interviews from the Bullseye vault. First, Rachel Bloom, creator and star of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, the hit CW musical romantic comedy. She talks about the show's roots, overcoming social anxiety and what it's like to go be suspended mid-air on a giant pretzel. Then, Gloria Calderon Kellett and Mike Royce, co-creators of Netflix's One Day at a Time. They collaborated with TV legend Norman Lear to create a late-teens version of his classic sitcom. Mike and Gloria talk about the show's creative process, the value of diversity and the excitement (and drudgery) of having a Quinceañera. Finally, you ever feel like a silly movie? Like the kind where critically acclaimed vocalist Seal gets attacked by a pack of wolves? Well, have we got a flick for you!

Mike Royce Executive Producer and writer of Men Of A Certain Age and Everyone Loves Raymond is our guest.  Men Of A Certain Age is a fantastic series on TNT starring Ray Romano Scott Bakula Andre Braugher and Brian White to name of few in this outstanding cast.  This comedic drama has taken on a storyline dealing with the subject of teen anxiety and panic disorder.  It is written and portrayed so well and with such insight into parental confusion and teen avoidance that I just had to have him on. Equally intriguing is the obsessive compulsive tendencies of the father (Ray Ramano) and the effect that it has on the relationships in his life. This show is far from gloom and doom, it is one of the funniest, smartest and compelling TV Series you will find. If you have not seen this show you are missing out . It is hilarious - heart warming - contemporary and one of the best shows on television.  Who knew men of that certain age could be so cool!
