It's movie time again, as we are again joined by Justin Jones (@xPrimusPilusx) to discuss Furiousa, the latest film in George Miller's Mad Max series and the prequel to Fury Road focusing on the origin of the character played by Charlize Theron. As you might imagine, it's a spoiler-filled discussion of all aspects of the film,so if you've not seen it yet, you've been warned. We start with our overall thoughts and then break down the story beats, the characters, the acting, the practical stunts and everything else under the hot Australian desert sun. There's also some other movie chat, including the issues of presenting historical artifacts through contemporary mores, the sale of Criterion and should we worry about its future and a tease of a future episode detailing the great cinematic year that was 1999. This episode was recorded on my phone immediately after seeing Furiousa, so we apologize for the dip in audio quality Also, to answer some questions asked in the episode, the actor who originally played Immortal Joe, Hugh Keays-Byrne, did pass away in 2020 and the role was played this time by Lachy Hulme, who also played Rizzdale Pell, Dementus' chief lieutenant. And “the truck driver” was Praetorian Jack, played by Tom Burke.
This week, put this podcast in your earholes and I will carry you to the gates of Valhalla myself, as we die historic inducting a new entry into the podcast canon. It's 2015's Mad Max: Fury Road, written and directed by George Miller, and starring Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Hugh Keays-Byrne, Zoe Kravitz, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Riley Keough. It is pure spectacle action cinema, with terrific politics and a thinking brain buried beneath its non-stop chase sequences. Plus, Hayley's got a pair of theatrical field reports this week on Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, as well as the Richard Linklater-Glen Powell reunion Hit Man. And we offer up our dream casts for Knives Out 3. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening to our discussion, Mad Max: Fury Road is currently streaming on Crave and Starz in Canada at the time of publication. Other works referenced in this episode include Set It Up, Long Shot, Devs, Paddington, La La Land, Moonlight, Her, The Sum of All Fears, Mad Max, Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, The Dark Knight Rises, Dunkirk, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Insidious, Lucy, Workaholics, The Matrix franchise, Sunshine, Speed Racer, La Chimera and Black Mass, among others. We'll be back next week as we're joined by comedian Rory Dunn to watch an unseen film from his collection: William Friedkin's Sorcerer (1977), currently streaming on the Criterion Channel. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
What a podcast, what a lovely podcast! The show rolls down the post-apocalyptic highway to hell this week to discuss this mind-boggling action spectacle from mastermind George Miller. Join your resident War Boys, David and Justus, as they talk about all the cars, characters and themes of the crazy world of Mad Max on this episode of The Greatest Movie Ever Made! Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) is directed by George Miller and stars Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Hugh Keays-Byrne and Josh Helman. Music: “Fractals” by Kyle Casey and White Bat Audio
Welcome to the Living for the Max series. Over the past 45 years, there has been no other film franchise QUITE as inventive nor as consistently exciting as The Mad Max Saga….four films mostly chronicling the post-apocalyptic adventures of lone wolf Max Roxatansky played three times by Mel Gibson and most recently by Tom Hardy. As each film has been directed by Australian cinematic genius George Miller, they have each reflected his unique vision while also being HUGELY influential on pop culture, more specifically the action genre. So needless to say, new ones don't come around very often and when they do….it MORE than qualifies as a cinematic EVENT. Therefore over the next several months, I will be revisiting EACH entry of this beloved franchise every month leading up to the U.S. release of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga on May 24! Starring Tom Hardy as the titular Max and Charlize Theron as Furiosa, this might be the most acclaimed (and possibly beloved) action saga of the 21st Century. It tells a simple story of a band of folks attempting to escape enslavement while picking up a couple of strays along the way. ;) One of those strays is Nux played by Nicholas Hoult and he joins a pretty strong extended cast which includes Zoe Kravitz, Riley Keogh, Rosie Huntington-Whitely, and Hugh Keays-Byrne as the frightening main villain, Immorten Joe. :o Also returning as director is the legendary George Miller who received an Oscar nomination for his work, along with nine other Oscar nominations including Best Picture. :) WHAT A LOVELY DAY INDEED!!!Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
This week the boys draw flies as we take on the original ‘Mad Max' in our featured segment 'Films of 1979'. The boys start by griping about natural flavors and tell a great story that involves the boys filming with a drone that ends with a Gorilla Glue catastrophe and a ruined microwave. Then, we set the scene of what happened in 1979 by discussing other films released that year and calling out some world events before discussing Max! We've fallen behind on editing these Wasteland episodes so we're extending the Appreciation Month topic into the first couple weeks of December as well. So, we hope you don't mind a few more trips heading out into the Dystopian fueled nightmares of the Apocalypse. It's a month long celebration of all things Post-Apocalyptic so you can expect marauders, scavengers, mutants and mayhem, cool car chases, fights over water and fuel, and battles of epic proportions. Coming up next in the dystopian and action mayhem in our 6th episode is a rather obscure sports themed flick with 1989's "THE BLOOD OF HEROES" from writer/director David Webb Peoples (writer of Blade Runner, Leviathan, Ladyhawke, and the Oscar winning Unforgiven). This feature tells of a future where the majority of technology and people have been wiped out and the remaining inhabitants and their sole entertainment is a sport called Jugging...a violent game played with the skull of a dog. The main lead played by the late Rutger Hauer, with the supporting cast portrayed by Joan Chen, Vincent D'Onofrio, Delroy Lindo, and Hugh Keays-Byrne. We foloow our core group as they travel the wastelands from game to game, leading to one of the only few cities where they long to play in the official league. Our deep dive discussion on this grueling flick is headed off by the duo of Cameron Scott with friend and frequent collaborator Gary Hill (Cinema Beef / The Last Call At Torchy's Podcast). Join them and buckle in because it's going to be a wild ride! "I don't like brutality. I like heroics. I like the blood of heroes."

We bring the 2nd Unit back to dip our toes into Development Hell once again...kind of! As a pseudo-sequel of our Superman Lives episodes, we dig into the history of what was supposed to be Justice League: Mortal, the short-lived but fascinating first attempt at the superhero team-up. Directed by George Miller, written by Kieran and Michelle Mulroney, and starring a surprisingly young cast including Armie Hammer, Common, and Jay Baruchel, this goofy comic-book-accurate project met insurmountable obstacles on the way to production. We break down the full cast and story of this project (thanks in large part to cast interviews, articles from Collider, and the great work of the Canceled Movie Report podcast), go over a brief history of the Justice League, and explore the biggest reasons for this film's collapse: the Australian government and the 2007-2008 Writers' Guild of America strike. We marvel at the gambit of casting such young actors for such iconic adult roles, give a brief lesson on rabies symptoms, hypothesize future advancements in villainous tracking technology, have a fun discussion on currency conversion rates and tax credits, subject you to some truly awful Batman voices, remind you that Jack is still trying to track down a VHS copy of Nukie to torture Joe with, bring awareness to the pitfalls of bad acronyms/initialisms, Jack plugs his latest creative project, and we ask a question we've been wondering for some time: do the members of the Justice League all share a tailor? Suit up, settle into the Brother Eye console, and enjoy the show. This week I'm strapped to a car, running from a guy called Joe, and commenting on the loveliness of the day, all while discussing ‘Mad Max: Fury Road' with the help of Paul from The Countdown! Find Paul and his great show at @thecountdownpc or at https://thecountdownpc.podbean.com/ Mad Max: Fury Road is a 2015 Australian post-apocalyptic action film co-written, co-produced, and directed by George Miller. Miller collaborated with Brendan McCarthy and Nico Lathouris on the screenplay. The fourth instalment and a "revisiting" of the Mad Max franchise, it was produced by Kennedy Miller Mitchell and RatPac-Dune Entertainment and distributed by Village Roadshow Pictures in Australia and by Warner Bros. Pictures internationally. The film stars Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Hugh Keays-Byrne, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Riley Keough, Zoë Kravitz, Abbey Lee, and Courtney Eaton. Set in a post-apocalyptic desert wasteland where gasoline and water are scarce commodities, Fury Road follows Max Rockatansky, who joins forces with Imperator Furiosa to flee from cult leader Immortan Joe and his army in an armoured tanker truck, leading to a lengthy road battle. In this episode Mark talks about one of his favourite films: the 2015 Australian post-apocalyptic action film "Mad Max: Fury Road" co-written, co-produced, and directed by George Miller. Set in a post-apocalyptic desert wasteland where petrol and water are scare commodities, the story of the film follows Max Rockatansky (played by Tom Hardy), who joins forces with Imperator Furiosa (played by Charlize Theron) to flee from the cult leader Immortan Joe (played by Hugh Keays-Byrne) and his army of "War Boys' in an armoured tanker truck - leading to a lengthy, furious, exciting, entertaining, and visually stunning road battle, which is also a poignant depiction of redemption. The film also stars Nicholas Hoult, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Riley Keough, Zoë Kravitz, Abbey Lee, and Courtney Eaton. They discuss how George Miller invigorates and separates the movie from its B-movie roots, the laying of the groundwork for the rest of this imagined future world and the surprising performance of Hugh Keays-Byrne.Take it to the baby town...If you like what you hear, please rate, review and subscribe!!You can find us on Facebook and Instagram at Movies in the Buff and Twitter @BuffMovies, or email us at watchingmoviesinthebuff@gmail.com.moviesinthebuff.buzzsprout.comHosted by John Dreher and Brett Bolton; Music by TJ Kross; Cover Art by Melanie Brown

This week on Total Movie Recall, Ryan stares out the window of his furniture-less modernist home at the endless, uncaring ocean while Steve sleeps on the floor with his hand gripped around his pistol. The pseudo-philosophy of this movie seems deeper than it is because it's endlessly reflected in all the glass buildings of Michael Mann's uber-masculine vision. Sure, it may be pretentious, but that's the point, and if you've got a problem with that, I will take you down, because we ain't exactly doin' thrill-seeker podcasts with “Born to Lose” tattoos on our chests. In this Around the World, Brett brought us an Ozploitation classic, the original Mad Max. Made on a shoestring budget with a baby Mel Gibson and a scenery-chewing Hugh Keays-Byrne, does it give any hints of the furious road madness to come? Was it everything David and Nicole imagined that a movie specializing in car crashes and violence would be? And what the heck is a "sprog"? Here's the documentary Nicole mentioned. Nikki Giovanni is one of America's greatest living poets. She has written dozens of collections of poetry as well as non-fiction and other work. Giovanni has received many awards and other honors including a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts and three NAACP Image awards for literature. She was also a central voice in the Black Arts Movement. Giovanni is currently University Distinguished Professor at Virginia Tech. Nikki Giovanni's new book is “Make Me Rain: Poems & Prose”. Giovanni reflects on truth-telling and writing as vocation, the evil of Donald Trump, the ultimate emptiness of white supremacy, and why black people keep struggling to save American society from its own racism and other iniquities. Nikki Giovanni also shares some memories of her public dialogue with James Baldwin. Chauncey DeVega's lifelong friend Bill the Lizard is also a guest on this installment of the podcast. They discuss how best to process grief from our losing such actors as Chadwick Boseman, Max Von Sydow, David Prose (Darth Vader) and Sean Connery in this horrible 2020. Chauncey DeVega is especially upset over the loss of professional wrestling legend Pat Patterson and Hugh Keays-Byrne, the actor who portrayed Immortan Joe and Toecutter in two of George Miller's wondrous Mad Max films. And to bring some joy and levity to these especially difficult last few weeks, Bill the Lizard and Chauncey discuss The Mandalorian and their favorite new Star Wars friend “Grogu”. This week's Empire Podcast is a particularly bumper-sized (more so than usual) edition, largely thanks to the late-breaking news about Warner Bros' decision to release their entire 2021 slate of movies simultaneously to streaming via HBO Max in the US. So Chris Hewitt, Helen O'Hara, Amon Warmann and James Dyer jumped back on and had a fairly involved chat about that. You can hear that in the news section, where they also pay tribute to the late David Prowse and Hugh Keays-Byrne. Elsewhere in the show, our colleagues of such lethal cunning get festive with a very special MCU version of A Christmas Carol, one-up each other in The Three Fact Structure, review Mank, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, Alex Wheatle, Falling, County Lines, and more. Oh, and Amon declares that he's going to win an Oscar. Our guests this week are fast-rising British star Harris Dickinson, so chilling in County Lines, who talks to Chris about a career path that will almost certainly see him end up in the director's chair. And, speaking of actors who have turned their hands to directing, Chris has an epic chat with Viggo Mortensen about his moving directorial debut, Falling. What's more, they're joined by the legend who plays Viggo's dad in that movie, the great Lance Henriksen. Enjoy. Perhaps in a couple of batches.

We mention our Patreon at the end of every episode, but we never tell you about our weekly bonus episodes. This week we talked about the recent passing of Hugh Keays-Byrne, so Julia thought it a good idea to give our regular listeners a taste of what we do outside of the normal feed.

When the Federal Narcotics Bureau has a Chinese national in their custody, it’s time to call in an expert. Forget the Man from U.N.C.L.E., they need the Man from Hong Kong, Special Branch Investigator Fang Sing Leng. But after an assassin kills his suspect, it’s up to Fang to take down the infamous drug and gun runner Jack Wilton, played by George Lazenby. With Roger Ward and Hugh Keays-Byrne in tow as his Australian counterparts, it’s up to Fang to chase down every lead and use every resource at his disposal to tear down Wilton’s criminal enterprise and destroy everyone that stands in his way.
Jonathan and Matt are, like the rest of you, in isolation at the moment. Safely ensconced in their own homes across the Atlantic, they decided it was time to do a miniseries of films that feel a little too relatable right now. Not to make light of the scary situation we all currently find ourselves in the midst of, but rather to make this time of contemplation a little more enjoyable. The guys as that you seek out the films or, in some cases, you avoid them and then listen to our mini-sodes. So, we come to the end of another calendar year, wow, thank you for all the support and listening to us each week as we look at topics we feel deserve more attention. Now this episode we are doing a year in review and discuss what some of our favourites were, what we felt were some of the highlights and what was just downright funny. So strap in as we look back on a year full of robots, space travel, recycling, and the energetic joy of Katie Bouman, and that is just the start. We also go for a ride looking at the movies and tv series that have made us laugh, cry, scream, and sit in awe throughout the year. We discuss the controversy of crazy violence and insanity in movies such as Rambo – Last Blood. Yep some one has claimed it is… Nope you will need to listen in to know what is happening. Also we look at the year in games and take stock of what has happened. We laugh at some of it, get annoyed at some, and shake our heads in bewilderment at others. We recap what has been some of the most exciting and stand out moments for us this year in terms of topics. We also include some special shout outs, remembrances, birthdays, and events for the end of the year. So as the year draws to a close and the dawn of a new one creeps over the horizon we once more ask you to take care of yourselves, look out for each other, and stay hydrated. 2019 in Science - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_in_science2019 in Movies, TV & Anime - https://www.empireonline.com/movies/features/biggest-movie-news-2019/- https://www.empireonline.com/movies/features/best-movies-2019/- https://www.empireonline.com/movies/features/best-tv-2019/2019 in Gaming - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_in_video_gamingOther topics discussed Kirigami Robots- https://www.inverse.com/article/61662-self-folding-kirigami-robotsBoston Dynamics- https://www.bostondynamics.com/New Horizons (interplanetary space probe that was launched as a part of NASA's New Frontiers program.)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_HorizonsSpaceX Dragon (reusable cargo spacecraft developed by SpaceX, an American private space transportation company.)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SpaceX_DragonMaking breathable Oxygen using comets- https://www.caltech.edu/about/news/comet-inspires-chemistry-making-breathable-oxygen-marsE-Scooters are not green enough- https://phys.org/news/2019-08-e-scooters-green-options.htmlTextile Recycling - https://www.abc.net.au/news/science/2019-06-15/textile-recycling-fashion-old-clothes-waste/11197904Black Hole image makes history- https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/chandra/news/black-hole-image-makes-history- https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-47873592Katie Bouman: American computer scientist working in the field of computer imagery. On the final episode of 2019, the gang brings We Love Movies month to an end with a spirited convo about one of the best films ever made, Mad Max: Fury Road! Does cinematic stunt work get better than this? It is definitely a career best for Charlize, no? And how sweet would it be to ride on that rock and roll tank? PLUS: No way Immortan Joe could sprint down that hallway!Mad Max: Fury Road stars Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Hugh Keays-Byrne, Zoë Kravitz, and Riley Keough; directed by George Miller.
Immortan Joe gave us one of the most amazing wasteland warlords in cinema, but how does he compare to The Toecutter, the villain Hugh Keays-Byrne brought to life 30 years earlier? We also discuss Capable’s necessity in helping Nux transform as a character and wonder if it was necessary for Nux to make the ultimate sacrifice.
On this epic episode of The Projection Booth, we remember the road warrior, the man we called Mad Max. In the roar of an engine, he lost everything and became a shell of a man, a burnt-out desolate man, a man haunted by the demons of his past, a man who wandered out into the wasteland. And it was here, in this blighted place, that he learned to live again. Ben Buckingham and Mike Thompson join Mike White to discuss the ever-shifting landscape of George Miller’s Mad Max series from its audacious beginning as a bikie exploitation / revenge Mad Max (1979) to the post-apocalyptic Western Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981) to the troublesome Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) and concluding (?) with the spectacular Mad Max: Fury Road (2015). Interviews feature actors from three of the four films — Roger Ward, Vernon Wells, Virginia Hey, Bruce Spence, Hugh Keays-Byrne — as well as author Luke Buckmaster, author of Miller and Max.

This is the end so catch up on our previous THREE Mad Max Movie Reviews! 30 years, yes that's right listeners, three decades after Mad Max: Beyond Thurderdome blasted into cinemas, George Miller resurrected Max Rockatansky to take one more ride, this time on the Fury Road. Mel Gibson passed the role of Max onto a much younger Tom Hardy--this film, once again, features a new cast of characters but in the same outrageous Australian Outback. Although this is the fourth (and many consider the best) installment, it was a time for firsts: this is the first entry in the series to receive any Oscar nominations. Miller, at this point, had already won a few Oscars for his childrens films, but this film blew out the 2016 Academy Awards. Fury Road was nominated for 10 Oscars--including Best Picture and the film would go on to take home 6 Oscars (the most of the night!). Fun fact, Hugh Keays-Byrne who played Toe-Cutter in the first Mad Max, has a new part as the ghastly villian Immortan Joe. Is the fourth time the charm? Join Corbin and Allen as they speed onto the Fury Road to discuss Mad Max: Fury Road! Is this your favorite entry in the quadrilogy? Let us know in the comments below and your ranking of the films! It's that time of the year again where we turn over the reigns of programming to The Projection Booth's Mike White for the second annual Mike White March. This year's films are all Ozploitation, focusing on the best exploitation films Australia has to offer, and this month is kicked off with Stone. A biker film that was a precursor to the more popular stateside Mad Max, the film follows the eponymous Stone, an undercover cop, who joins the Gravedigger biker gang to try and determine who is killing them one by one. It's a novel premise that ultimately falls flat as it fails to build upon the initial albeit exciting idea. Chris is joined by Mike White to talk about the film, its lasting influence on both American and Australian cinema, and the always fantastic Hugh Keays-Byrne.You can follow Chris Stachiw at @KultureStach, Eric Kniss at @tychomagnetics and the Kulturecast @kulturecast. Strap yourself in and prepare yourself for a thrilling ride as the boys sit down for the first time after their vacation to discuss MAD MAX! Directed by George Miller and written by George Miller and James McCausland, MAD MAX is set “a few years from now” and shows society as we known it on the down swing. Main Force Police, or MFP, is patrolling the roads from rougians, ragamuffins and crazed motorcycle gangs. Max Rockatansky is the MFP’s top officer. MFP finds themselves going after a violent, sadistic motorcycle gang lead by a charismatic psycho known only as the Toecutter. He leads his group from town to town and leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. They’re put on Max’s radar after his partner Jim Goose is burned alive by one of their underlings but it becomes a tale of revenge after Max’s wife and son are killed. With the law no longer on his side, rage in his heart and a super-charged V8 Interceptor on his side, Max vows to chase down and kill the Toecutter and his gang. MAD MAX, upon release, wasn’t well received at first. A lot of critics didn’t get the film and panned it for it’s violence, incoherentness and the killing of children, but that’s not to say the film did bad. Variety praised George Miller’s directorial debut, it grossed $100 million worldwide, awarded three Australian Film Institute Awards and spawned three sequels (The Road Warrior, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome and Fury Road) Mad Max was the first major leading role for Australian actor Mel Gibson and also stars Joanne Samuel, Hugh Keays-Byrne, Geoff Parry and Steve Bisley.

Jessie finds herself face to face with several threatening individuals with sprog held hostage in the middle of it all. This minute features some remarkable blocking and scene setting that makes the most of the dynamic characteristics of Toecutter’s lieutenants. This scene also features some excellent accent work from Hugh Keays-Byrne (the jury is still out on Rick’s accents). It’s a great start to a week that does not end well. It's a tense start to the week as Toecutter rallies his lieutenants and they take off after the young couple in the chevy. Amidst all of this moving around we notice some parallels between this chase and the pursuit of the Nightrider at the beginning of the film and wonder if there's an extended cut of Hugh Keays-Byrne hitting a windshield with his ax. This week on 3Amoviegos we bring along our special guest Paul to see George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road. Starring Tom Hardy as Max, Charlize Theron as Furiosa, Nicholas Hoult as Nux and Hugh Keays-Byrne as Immortan Joe, this fourth installment of Miller’s tales of the legendary road warrior finds Max caught in the middle of a daring escape. When War Rig driver Furiosa decides to go rouge and help a group of 5 enslaved wives, selected especially for breeding by Immortan Joe, escape the ruthless cult tyrant, Max is thrust into a chase that’s not his, but fights for a cause he finds himself unable to abandon. Hear our four heroes talk an awful lot about a movie that had surprisingly little dialogue, on this week’s episode of 3Amoviegos.
“They say people don't believe in heroes anymore. Well, damn them! You and me, Max, we're going to give them back their heroes!" George Miller's film “Mad Max” came out in 1979 in Australia and became a huge success, going on to become the most profitable film ever until it was unseated from its throne by one Blair Witch. It went on to spur two sequels and, soon, a fourth. Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we gear up for one of our most anticipated movies this summer by kicking off our Mad Max series with the start of it all — “Mad Max.“ Join us as we talk about why we love this film so much and how much Miller gets out of this dystopian world he's created, despite his limited funds. We discuss the nature of this world and where it falls as far as post-acopalytic versus a near future that's just messed up. We chat about Mel Gibson in one of his first starring roles and what he brings to the table, along with the other actors (including Hugh Keays-Byrne as Toecutter, who will be turning up on ”Fury Road" as well). We go into the amazing stunt work at length, really digging into some of the wild things they did while marveling that so few people got seriously hurt. And we look at the cinematography, art direction, costume design and composing and how each element really worked perfectly to bring this world to life. It's a fantastic film and we're both big fans.
