Welcome to the Living for the Max series. Over the past 45 years, there has been no other film franchise QUITE as inventive nor as consistently exciting as The Mad Max Saga….four films mostly chronicling the post-apocalyptic adventures of lone wolf Max Roxatansky played three times by Mel Gibson and most recently by Tom Hardy. As everyone has been directed by Australian cinematic genius George Miller, they have each reflected his unique vision while also being HUGELY influential on pop culture, more specifically the action genre. So needless to say, new ones don't come around very often and when they do….it MORE than qualifies as a cinematic EVENT. Therefore over the next several months, I will be revisiting EACH entry of this beloved franchise every month leading up to the U.S. release of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga on May 24! And now the SECOND film in this franchise which is considered by many to be the best overall.....well at least was considered to be the best until Mad Max Fury Road came out in 2015. But it's still damn impressive bringing us back to Max who is now a drifter with his own heavily souped up Interceptor wandering around the post-apocalyptic Australian Outback. His character is always on the search for gasoline....as are most others at this point in time which leads to some potential trouble. He finds a massive oil refinery occupied by well-meaning survivors who just want to live in peace. Of course there are more dangerous elements out there who want to take over this oil refinery and they are lead by the evil Lord Humungus played by Kjell Nilsson...and they're not taking any prisoners. :o So here comes Max to try to help them transport their oil to a safer place while avoiding this violent gang which means to overtake them....and what results is a rip-roaring series of action sequences mostly taking place on the open road! Also co-starring are Bruce Spence, Michael Preston, Emil Minty, and Vernon Wells.Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Sunny day, sweeping the clouds away...At this week's round table, Inica, Jack, & Kenisha spoke with Michael Preston and Rafi Santo from the Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop about how teens are engaging with public media, and media and social media more broadly today. We all expressed nostalgia for public broadcasting, connecting it to our youth, while not fully connecting it to our present. Which didn't surprise our guests because it mirrors findings in their By/With/For Youth: Inspiring Next Gen Public Media Audiences initiative, in which they spoke with tweens and teens across the U.S., asking them for their advice about what media producers should do if they want to engage with people their age, and how their lives have changed during the pandemic, producing the report The Missing Middle: Reimagining a Future for Tweens, Teens, and Public Media. We've grown up with access to the world at our fingertips, able to access anything, anytime, with the lines between work and play blurring because so much of both happen online. Our lives have been shaped by online interactions, which is a blessing and a curse. Technology evolves as quickly as we do—and what our younger siblings experience through technology may be very different than what we have. We loved discussing what a good, credible media technology ecosystem could look like--amidst the crisis of misinformation, disinformation, and polarizing media consumption--and the values that should undergird it. We loved speaking with our guests about the authentic learning lives of youth, and how to honor the very rich learning and problem solving that happens beyond the classroom, in large part thanks to what technology makes available to us . At root, questions about technology boil down to questions of values--what do we want to spend our time doing and learning, how do we create breathing space in our tech-dominated worlds, and what kinds of possible futures do we want for young people and for our citizenry? Most youth don't know what public media is, where to find it, and what's different from commercial media, but public media has an important role to play in a healthy democracy, particularly given how few purely public goods we have in the U.S. that aren't driven by profit. We all agreed that youth should play an active role not just in selecting what media we watch but in producing it: which is of course a core value of this for GenZ, by GenZ podcast. “It’s hard to think of a more important audience than kids who are developing their sense of self and their connections to their communities all in this fairly messy and quickly evolving media landscape. With the Alamo Bowl just a week away, Levi, Cole, and Marchie are back to bring you a HUGE preview for the game. Washington State's high flying air raid offense has been torching the Pac-12 all season on the arm of Gardner Minshew, but the stout Cyclone defense is built to stop the air raid offenses of the Big 12. Which will break first, the unstoppable force, or the immovable object? We also recap all of the signees from the early signing period. The theme: SIZE and SPEED. The crown jewels of the class are a Jirehl Brock and Breece Hall, a pair of top-10 running backs in the country that will have an opportunity to contribute next fall, but the class has a ton of athleticism from top to bottom. With this class including three running backs in total, what does that signal in regards to the impending draft decision for David Montgomery? If David returns, that would make SEVEN scholarship running backs on the roster. That's an incredibly loaded group of backs, but how you you distribute carries to make sure everyone is happy? No matter what happens, this a good problem to have. Then, we sat down with Michael Preston from CougCenter, our Washington State counterpart, to get the lowdown on the Cougars, and gives us some predictions for the game. This is a longer episode, but it's absolutely jam-packed with great Iowa State football content.

In this episode, Jeff sits down with the Executive Director of CSNYC, Michael Preston and Superintendent Jason Eitner to discuss why students of all ages should have a Computer Science infused curriculum. About CSNYChttps://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.csnyc.org&d=DQMFaQ&c=gOrgfQB8xVH7F0lP7MQhi8CyVXMBvYqNyP3LuSSb8Lw&r=C5EhJpDQOemW-U6ZscAHfCGXMa5_VEAMLAlztaSAie0&m=wtEF6bbH9KgeAF8yeUnWjcxs0Cvtm_ZQhwpwXPZ_W0s&s=iI-f5-Xy7gyLtAjXVBhCrlcFAIKuyXBBXS3j-1nkiGM&e= (CSNYC) is a nonprofit founded in 2013 to ensure that all of New York City's 1.1 million public school students have access to a high-quality computer science (CS) education that puts them on a pathway to college and career success. To build thriving ecosystems for CS education in NYC and nationwide, CSNYC develops programming across four key areas: community development, teacher pipelines, industry engagement, and research. Together, work in these areas supports our partnership with the City of New York in Computer Science for All (CS4All): a 10-year initiative to bring CS to all 1,700 NYC public schools. Early access to high-quality opportunities to study CS is critical to breaking down gender, racial and social barriers in the tech sector and related fields. Until recently, CS education was available to only a small number of NYC students, primarily enrolled in selective high schools. In 2012, the NYC Department of Education, with support from CSNYC founder and tech investor Fred Wilson, launched the https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__afsenyc.org_&d=DQMFaQ&c=gOrgfQB8xVH7F0lP7MQhi8CyVXMBvYqNyP3LuSSb8Lw&r=C5EhJpDQOemW-U6ZscAHfCGXMa5_VEAMLAlztaSAie0&m=wtEF6bbH9KgeAF8yeUnWjcxs0Cvtm_ZQhwpwXPZ_W0s&s=07EWNBkybvQSoGnKZwwpyBL8aLvE8rnjVzjMQvE42r0&e= (Academy for Software Engineering) (AFSE), the city's first CS-themed public high school available to all students regardless of academic background. A year later, it was followed by the opening of its sister school, the https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__bronxsoftware.org_&d=DQMFaQ&c=gOrgfQB8xVH7F0lP7MQhi8CyVXMBvYqNyP3LuSSb8Lw&r=C5EhJpDQOemW-U6ZscAHfCGXMa5_VEAMLAlztaSAie0&m=wtEF6bbH9KgeAF8yeUnWjcxs0Cvtm_ZQhwpwXPZ_W0s&s=hKlTQw6yP3XYsagexuxkdP4LodqEnJoz8yAAfVcnJ5o&e= (Bronx Academy of Software Engineering) (BASE), and the launch of the https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__cs4all.nyc_academic-2Dprograms_software-2Dengineering-2Dprogram_&d=DQMFaQ&c=gOrgfQB8xVH7F0lP7MQhi8CyVXMBvYqNyP3LuSSb8Lw&r=C5EhJpDQOemW-U6ZscAHfCGXMa5_VEAMLAlztaSAie0&m=wtEF6bbH9KgeAF8yeUnWjcxs0Cvtm_ZQhwpwXPZ_W0s&s=24lhqxXQEA-_ktHpmPp2uDOUzJcRhq3Ia2aD7e4YI1o&e= (Software Engineering Program) (SEP), which provides middle and high schools with a multi-year sequence of CS courses. These efforts were tied to the city's large-scale strategy to encourage the growth of new industries and new jobs, and to ensure that education, both in K12 and at the college/university level, would properly prepare individuals for these new opportunities. CSNYC was formally launched in 2013 to provide funding and guidance to these initiatives and to support a portfolio of CS education programs managed by other organizations. These programs build capacity in schools by training teachers from other subject areas to teach CS and by recruiting volunteer software engineers to teach in classrooms. In its first three years, CSNYC supported programs reached 150 public schools and 12,000 students citywide—a demonstration that CS was possible for all students if their teachers were provided with high-quality professional development, curriculum, and support. With Mayor de Blasio's announcement of the 10-year...
Michael Preston is a Master Waldorf Teacher. I consider him a Wisdom Elder, someone who has lived a life of curiosity and authenticity, and in doing so has learned much about the deeper insights and wisdom that life makes available to us. And I’m deeply grateful that he taught my son's class from 1st grade through 3rd grade before retiring. At a young age, while pursuing his teaching degree, Michael was introduced to the work of Rudolph Steiner and Waldorf education. That was followed by a series of synchronistic events that gave him the inner assurance to pursue his life's work as a Waldorf educator. He left his home in New Zealand at age 17, hitchhiked across Australia with a few dollars in his pocket, convinced the Head of Waldorf teacher training in England through a series of letters that he was ready and committed to Waldorf training, and then eventually made it to Emerson College in Sussex, England to begin his vocational studies. In this conversation Michael reflects on his journey and eloquently provides context, educational philosophy, and depth in regards to Waldorf education. He reveals his love for humanity, particularly children, by telling his own story of development and search for a meaningful way forward. Michael has committed his life to training children to be whole humans, capable of moving through the world with intellectual inquisitiveness, compassion, and through socialization and play. His love for education is grounded in a doctorate in philosophy of education, which makes this a colorful and poetic conversation. Michael is also an accomplished ukulele player and recorder player. He has published numerous books on learning ukulele and will be releasing a recorder book to assist Waldorf educators in teaching recorder. Michael has directly influenced me personally and my family as a whole. His thoughtfulness and caring approach to life has been imprinted on our family for ever. The subject matter that Michael and I discuss in this conversation includes: Waldorf education The impact of technology on children Screens as the modern form of transportation Rudolph Steiner Anthroposophical Medicine Anthroposophical Society Maurice Merleau-Ponty and the Primacy of Perception

With the international popularity of “Mad Max,” George Miller was excited to get back into the driver's seat and continue with his hero as he wandered the dystopian wastes of Australia looking for fuel. It was a smart move as “Mad Max 2,” or “The Road Warrior” as it was released in the States, not only did well at the box office but helped build the cult following of this franchise. Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we continue our Mad Max series with 1981's “Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior.” We talk about the fundamental differences in the types of story between the first and second film, and how Pete gravitates toward the familial connections in the former while Andy gravitates toward the redemption in the latter. We chat about the great cast — Bruce Spence, Michael Preston, Max Phipps, Vernon Wells, Kjell Nilsson, Virginia Hey and of course Mel Gibson — and how they fit in mess of a future. We talk stunts and car chases — of course — and how Miller really stepped it up for this film, culminating in a 13-minute tanker chase at the end. And we look at the costume design and how it's evolved from the first film to this. We love the film, despite our differences about which is better, and have a great talk about it this week. Tune in!
