Episode 19 shifts the spotlight towards student athletes as Ethan Avalos joins the show. A dear friend and colleague from Josh's high school days, Ethan has played Academy level soccer with Sigma FC ever since he was a kid, and joined the Western Mustangs Varsity Soccer team last year, all while majoring in business and specializing in accounting. Finding success both on and off the field while in high school, Ethan had always had his sights set on the NCAA. However, after some injury trouble shifted his focus, he began searching for other opportunities and learned that sports isn't the only thing that defines him. Now looking forward to getting back on the field during his sophomore year, Ethan joins the podcast to talk about his journey as a student athlete, the challenges that come with sports and school, and finding the silver linings when hardship arises. Doug Stacey began working as a physiotherapist for the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League in 2003. Currently, Doug has now transitioned to the role of Head Athletic Therapist for the Western Mustangs University in London Ontario, Canada. He is widely considered one of the best hockey trainers in Canada, having a 15 year history working with Hockey Canada. Doug has covered 12 World Championships and 4 Olympics, where he has won several gold medals and championships. In this episode, Doug reflects on his role as a trainer in supporting the mental health of his athletes. Patrick Johnston has accomplished so much! While playing for Durham Attack he helped the club win a Provincial and National Championship. Outside of club he would represent Canada at the NORCECA Youth Championships in Mexico City and Team Ontario at the Canada Games in Regina. Patrick committed to Thompson Rivers where he was awarded the Sports Task Force Athletes of the Year. Pat transferred back to Ontario to play for the University of Western Mustangs. He would earn OUA Libero of the Year and a Second Team OUA All-Star. While at Western Pat completed his Masters of Coaching and would coach with the Mustangs and Boston College. After completing his education Pat would coach the Fanshawe Falcons to 3 Provincial Titles and a National Championship! Tuesday they captured the Norfolk/Brant overall swim title for a third consecutive year. The Titans were the lone Norfolk entry at the meet and 15 individual swimmers and seven relay teams have qualified for the CWOSSA February 19, in Wilmot. You’ll be able to read more about it on the Smart Sports Podcast Facebook page. Next shout out goes to the Delhi Rockets local league atom team. This group of kids played five games in two days and won them all to capture the International silver Stick Regional title in Haliburton and Minden. Well, that’s all the time we have for this week. When people insist on discussing the location of the running capital of Canada, the same names come up: Victoria, Vancouver, Guelph, so on, etc. but one often forgotten city that has produced a solid bunch of long distance guys is none other than Speed City, London, Ontario. Lanni Marchant, Jim Finlayson, Rob Watson all hail from the Forest City, while Leslie Sexton now calls it home. Wilfrid Laurier University has been the centre as a result of how they decided to go about disciplining a teaching assistant that showed a debate video of the very controversial Jordan Peterson during class. They published an official apology to Lindsay Shepherd, the teaching assistant, but it wasn't really an apology. The staff that committed such an aggressive and unfair interrogation of Lindsay Shepherd aren't being disciplined themselves!
