When Jordan Hayles was just nine years old, he sat wide-eyed in the studio of The National, mesmerized by the lights, the cameras, and the grand chair behind the anchor's desk. That early spark turned into a flame in high school, where he discovered the power of editing through mashups and music videos. Years later, he's become one of Canada's most thoughtful editors, with a career that's spanned lifestyle TV, independent film, and corporate campaigns, including the unforgettable NBA Championship video for the Toronto Raptors that left him in tears at the edit suite. In this episode of The Visual Intonation Podcast, we dive into the journey of a post-production powerhouse whose path was paved by hustle, humility, and heart. From his beginnings at Mohawk College to his early days cutting tape, Jordan shares how a passion for storytelling and a relentless belief in his skills guided him through spaces where Black editors are often few and far between. His work at Vice, CBC, MLSE, and on hit series like Next Stop and TallBoyz speaks to a career built not just on talent, but on connection, mentorship, and vision. But Jordan's story isn't just about credits and cuts, it's about community. He reflects on giving back through volunteer work at the Nia Centre for the Arts, mentoring the next generation of BIPOC creators, and how being “STiXX”—his self-branded identity born from being the skinny kid—became a badge of pride. Jordan doesn't just edit for the screen; he edits with purpose, helping others see a place for themselves in a space that too often overlooks them. Tune in as Jordan Hayles brings raw honesty, sharp insight, and infectious inspiration to the mic. Whether he's talking about crying in an edit suite or getting discovered on a Twitter thread, he reminds us that this industry isn't just about who you know, it's about what you show. And Jordan's been showing us excellence, one frame at a time. Jordan Hayles' Website: https://www.jordanhayleseditor.com/Jordan Hayles' Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jordan.a.hayles/Jordan Hayles' BlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/jahayles.bsky.socialJordan Hayles' ImDB: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm7391721/Support the showVisual Intonation Website: https://www.visualintonations.com/Visual Intonation Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/visualintonation/Vante Gregory's Website: vantegregory.comVante Gregory's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/directedbyvante/ To support me on Patreon (thank you): patreon.com/visualintonations Tiktok: www.tiktok.com/@visualintonation Tiktok: www.tiktok.com/@directedbyvante

On today's program, I'm celebrating the 28th anniversary of CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO, which began on September 20th, 1996, at CHMR / C101.5 FM at Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario. The station is now called INDI 101. For all of our anniversary programs, and yes, some years I forget to do one, I try to create something new. Sometimes it's clever, and other times it's just a simple, dumb idea that's relatively simple to implement. This show is the latter. Since the show is now 28 years old, I've decided to base it on that number. So, you'll hear tracks that are either 28 seconds long, scores that are 28 years old, films with the number 28 in the title, the 28th track on the album, take place in 1928, or were written in 1928 featuring composers Mark Snow, John Murphy, Charlie Chaplin, Thomas Newman, Danny Elfman, Terence Blanchard, Joseph Conlon, Marc Sharman, David Arnold and Dominic Frontiere. Admittedly, this is silly, but it was quite enjoyable to put together. In any case, I hope you'll enjoy it. —— Special thanks to our Patreon supporters: Matt DeWater, David Ballantyne, Joe Wiles, Maxime, William Welch, Tim Burden, Alan Rogers, Dave Williams, Max Hamulyák, Jeffrey Graebner, Don Mase, Victor Field, Jochen Stolz, Emily Mason, Eric Skroch, Alexander Schiebel, Alphonse Brown, John Link, Andreas Wennmyr, Matt Berretta, Eldaly Morningstar, Jim Wilson, Glenn McDorman, Chris Malone, Steve Karpicz, Deniz Çağlar, Brent Osterberg, Jérôme Flick, Sarah Brouns, Aaron Collins, Randall Derchan, Angela Rabatin, Michael Poteet, Larry Reese, Thomas Tinneny, William Burke, Rudy Amaya, Stacy Livitsanis, Rick Laird, Carl Wonders, Nathan Blumenfeld, Lee Wileman, Daniel Herrin, Scott Bordelon, James Alexander, Brett French, Ian Clark —— Cinematic Sound Radio is fully licensed to play music by SOCAN. Rick holds a Master's Degree in American Studies from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He is the former Assistant Director for Public Programs, National Museum of the American Indian, Smithsonian Institution; Museum Director, Institute of American Indian Arts, Santa Fe, NM; and Assistant Professor, Native American Studies, SUNY Buffalo. He formerly served as Senior Project Coordinator of the Deyohahá:ge: Indigenous Knowledge Centre at Six Nations Polytechnic Institute, Ohsweken, Ontario. Rick is an interpretive specialist to develop exhibitions for the recently renovated Mohawk Institute, the oldest Indian residential school in Canada. He is the Indigenous Innovation Specialist at Mohawk College in Hamilton and serves as a Cultural Advisor to FNTI in the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory. Tiokasin and Rick talk about the changes the U.S. Constitution and its state at the time and the original intention and lived experience of the Haudenosaunee Confederation. Their conversation, although it took place a number of years ago is still extremely relevant to today. “Right now, this country is in a state of change and what I believe were sacred to the leaders, the founding [colonial] fathers were these ideals and the laws that they did to come up with a partnership with the Native nations, is being ignored by this current generation of Americans. I think that we have to look back at that these were seriously sacred promises, legal promises made, and if you abuse the First People of the land, how do you really expect your great-grandchildren to grow up and be able to celebrate democracy that you herald? It's really about justice. I always say the Indians are the miners canary of American justice. How America treats the Native people, it's going to symbolic of what is forthcoming as to how they're going to treat the rest of the people.” — Rick Hill Production Credits: Tiokasin Ghosthorse (Lakota), Host and Executive Producer Liz Hill (Red Lake Ojibwe), Producer Karen Martinez (Mayan), Studio Engineer, Radio Kingston Kevin Richardson, Podcast Editor Music Selections: 1. "The challenges with terrestrial laser scanning are the huge terabytes files that are generated, and the expertise and the cost of the hardware. The advance of low cost 360, cameras, and the software to do photochromatic data processing of that data to create your virtual tours, but something we can do very quickly with a hardhat and a camera that's $1,000." "We're talking about digital twin technology—taking reality capture and BIM and physics based engineering, to start to understand and to replicate these processes in a virtual environment before we do them in the real environment. And there's some unbelievable cost savings here." "The safest job site is the one that you don't visit." In this episode, I'm in conversation with Kelly Watt who is the CEO of VisualPlan.net. The world of three dimensional data (or 3D) has absolutely transformed over the past several years because of cloud computing (to store and process data), and inexpensive data collection tools (LIDAR, 360 degree cameras, and others). This data enables businesses to virtualise many aspects of operations that are still reliant on people-based processes (such as travel to site). The amount of value at stake is measured in the billions of dollars. Kelly sets out the use cases that oil and gas businesses are now poised to capture.  Kelly Watt is the CEO of Visual Plan, and a specialist with 3D lidar, photogrammetry, video imaging, and analysis technologies. He is also a level 1 thermographer with experience in spectral imaging and reliability testing. This episode, versatility is the word of the day. Sam Cook is currently the host and executive producer of The Shot, a singer/songwriter competition show filmed in Toronto, but she's also spent time as a radio host, podcaster, VO artist, and on-screen with other TV networks like YTV.It should go without saying that most people don't begin their career on one of the biggest shows in television history, but that's exactly what Sam did. We talk to her about how a Canadian girl managed to land an internship on David Letterman in New York, and how she followed it up with getting a job at YTV by crashing her car in the parking lot. Certainly not a conventional start, but a roaring one nonetheless. We also talk about how she began to fall in love with radio, and when she made the move to voiceover and teaching. Sam teaches On-Air Television at Mohawk College, and in the latter half of the episode, we dive into everything about teaching the hosts of tomorrow - including some of my rather strong opinions about entry-level radio jobs.To connect with Sam, you can follow her on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and YouTube.Or, if you're considering her for any radio/voiceover positions, check out her website.CLICK HERE to get a transcript of this episode.A thanks to the people who support the show each week and allow it arrive on your phones for free. The CHR Prep Service - Click to get a free trial.nLogicMegatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
