For this episode, we have one of our favorite guests: Jordan Raynor. On a previous episode, we had a blast talking with him about his last bestselling book, Redeeming Your Time. Be sure to go back and listen to that episode. What was impressive about that book was how, even though very practical, it was so clearly written on a strong biblical foundation. His latest book is The Sacredness of Secular Work: 4 Ways Your Job Matters for Eternity (Even When You're Not Sharing the Gospel) (Waterbrook Press, 2024)Here at Reintegrate, I often discuss overcoming the false dualism between the sacred and the secular. I love how Jordan Raynor plays with those words in the title. We might want to call it “secular work,” but God calls the work of normal everyday workers, not just overseas missionaries or pastors, sacred work.Scroll down to learn more about Jordan Raynor.Subscribe to the podcast on your favorite app:Thanks for listening! Please share this podcast with your friends. SummaryDebate no more where can one find salvation. Discover the profound answer within the teachings of Jesus. IntroductionI don't know about you, but I like to be in control! It's been the human temptation ever since the Garden of Eden. But there is one thing for certain that we cannot be in control of: our eternal destiny. We Cannot Save OurselvesIn Luke 5:11, we witness a transformative moment when Simon Peter, James, and John leave behind their fishing nets and follow Jesus. This simple act symbolises a profound truth: realising that we cannot save ourselves and that we need Jesus' help. The Fishermen Wanted to be in Control of Their DestinyBefore that life-altering decision, these fishermen toiled tirelessly, casting their nets into the sea, hoping to secure their livelihood. However, despite their experience and effort, they often came up empty-handed. It was in this moment of helplessness, after a night of fruitless labour, that Jesus appeared and demonstrated his divine power by filling their nets to the brim. Simon Peter's response was to fall to his knees, recognising his insufficiency and sinfulness. He understood that his efforts alone were inadequate and that he needed Jesus. In that realisation, Peter chose to follow the Lord, accepting that salvation was found not in his own abilities, but in Christ. Where Can One Find Salvation? In Christ Alone! This episode is a poignant reminder that self-reliance and self-sufficiency can often lead us astray. We may attempt to navigate life's challenges, striving to save ourselves through our own merit, but ultimately find emptiness and exhaustion. It is only when we humbly acknowledge our limitations, recognising that we need Jesus' help, that we can experience his transformative power. Reflection Question: How often do we attempt to save ourselves through our own efforts, only to find frustration and emptiness? What steps can we take to embrace our own helplessness and invite Jesus to be the source of our salvation in all areas of our lives? Everyone is scared to launch their first program. Someone asked recently: what if I'm REALLY scared to launch my program. Like…what if there are powerful individuals and structures out there who might want to do me harm? What if putting myself out there associated with this work might actually be dangerous to me or my family? GREAT question. Let's agree NOT to give it the usual online marketing answer: “Just do the mindset work.” This visibility stuff comes up for ALL of us. I have it. Everyone I've ever worked with has had work come up around their childhood, their upper limits, self esteem, or imposter syndrome. We all need and deserve to do some important work around getting visible, using our voices, and taking up space. AND…it's gaslighting to say it's the same for everyone. When you are deciding to get more visible and you've got a marginalized identity or you're sharing messages that oppose our power structures, your visibility work is not just about getting out of your own way. For example, if you're speaking out against anti-black racism or you're talking about fat liberation or trans liberation, you're being brave in a significant ADDITIONAL way. My niche is not as risky. I'm a business coach & strategist. Yes, I'm queer and I'm a woman. AND I have lots of privilege: having money, being white, being cis-gendered… and on and on. Even with all of that privilege, I absolutely need and deserve to have colleagues I can get really vulnerable with and feel through my own visibility and exposure fears. We all do. In terms of this question: “What should I do if I'm REALLY afraid to launch my program? Should I switch niches? Should I move forward?” I do not have the right answer for you. I don't think there is one. Here are a couple things I'm pretty sure I DO know so that you can figure out your path. ONE: Find people who really understand what you have at stake and can support you emotionally and spiritually. If you're part of a marginalized group and/or if your work is related to opposing a power structure, you cannot do this alone. What if those people who you need to go to for support as an entrepreneur are also afraid? That doesn't mean that they can't support you and that you can't support them. We need to give up on the idea that we must be totally through the woods before we can help others. It's just not true. We can actually have mutual support while we're figuring this stuff out. Asking for help might mean saying: “Please stay on the phone with me while I work through what to do in this scary moment.” Or “Please sit on my couch while I press send on this email.” TWO: Don't rush through your fear. Feel the feelings that are coming up, and let the fear speak. Don't rush it to go away. Fear isn't the only force making decisions, but you can listen to it and allow it to have a seat at the table. I've got a great example coming up on the podcast. Next time we'll be hearing from Dr. Damon Constantinides. He created a Trans Masc Sexual Pleasure group. That's brave. Trans folks are always under attack, and especially right now. Damon talks in the episode about his decisions about creating his program and making his work visible. Today we're joined by Jordan Raynor, author, entrepreneur, and host of the "Mere Christians" podcast, to discuss the biblical perspective on work. We start by discussing what God thinks about work and how work was not a result of the fall, but rather a gift from God before the fall. But how does that truth change the way we work on a day-to-day basis? How can seemingly mundane work such as changing diapers or making a latte bring pleasure to God? We discuss what brings God joy in our work and what work will look like in heaven (yes, we will work in heaven!). Then, we talk about the importance of disciple-making and how it's more important than ever to think of this within the framework of the workplace. We discuss what "calling" means and whether God cares about what work we choose to do. Then, we look at the importance of doing difficult jobs with joy and why we as Christians need to be running into dark places. Joe Caruso, sales coach, trainer, author, and CEO of Do It Today sits down with Gina for a straight-talking interview with tons of great content. Joe talks about the importance of being able to shut and listen, neuro-selling, the power of enthusiasm, the importance of scripts and practicing those frameworks enough to be loose and natural while selling. He also took some of Gina's courses, and they discuss how practice helps to read people, how to listen, collaborate, be curious, and how to respond nimbly which makes both improv and selling work. The conversation continues about car salespeople, their reputation and effect on sales in general. Joe emphasizes the importance of selling the right way no matter what the industry. He reminds us that acting in your customers best interest, is also acting in your own best interest, the power of discovery, how auto sales techniques are incredibly transferrable, and Gina recounts a story that shows how differentiating yourself can win you life-long clients. PLUS! Joe gives Gina some advice on how to get her book finished! Come and grow with Sales Gravy & Sales Gravy University Find more about Joe Caruso Check out 99 Objections – But Closing Ain't One Find him on LinkedIn More about Gina Engagement Expert – Speaker – Sales Trainer – Entrepreneur – Improv Comic Gina is a Master Sales Trainer for Jeb Blount's Sales Gravy who combines street smarts and improv comedy skills with her experience in the corporate and entrepreneurial worlds, which sets her apart from her competition. “Sass without too much crass” is how Gina Trimarco describes herself. A high energy entrepreneur, engager, speaker, trainer, improv comedienne and podcast producer, Gina credits most of her success on her upbringing by her Italian mobster dad and German immigrant mother.

Always Be Learning “Success leaves clues.” The first time I heard that statement was from Dr. Johnathan Kraus in Episode 27.   Then David Jasse made the same point in Episode 59.    I thought I'd better sit up and pay attention.   Learning Is Vital, But We Can't Stay There We can't get stuck in learning mode alone. We also need to take ACTION. This is a big part of the Fast Track to Grant Writer VIP Program. Sure, we have plenty of supportive community and accountability, but the lessons are strategically designed for those who are ready to take serious action.   After going through the first few modules, the Fast Track to Grant Writer students are taking action - having conversations with prospective clients, setting up meetings, and figuring out their services. They already have a solid understanding of what types of services they can offer nonprofits - plus a group to support them and share ideas.   They've learned the importance of both learning AND action. 2021 Nonprofit Book Roundup  I enjoy learning from others too; that's why I always ask my guests to share a resource that's been especially helpful to them.     Here we go - the latest book roundup for 2021:   Asking: A 59-Minute Guide to Everything Board Members, Volunteers, and Staff Must Know to Secure the Gift - Jerold Panas  Dr. Jonathan Kraus (Ep 27) When Helping Hurts: How to Alleviate Poverty Without Hurting the Poor . . . and Yourself - Steve Corbett and Brian Fikkert  Rodney Olsen (Ep 48) The Ambassador's Journey: A Parable about Nonprofit Board Leadership - by Brian Brandt and Ashley Kutach  Brian Brandt (Ep 57) The Go-Giver - by John David Mann & Bob Burg  Alesha Mathis (Ep 67) I HAVE MY 501(C)3! Day 11: Two Are Better Than One: Find Your Elizabeths Read the Word: Hebrews 10:23-25, Ecc. 4:9-12  In the 1990s psychologist Robin Dunbar developed a method of defining the number of relationships we can sustain based on three factors: our brain’s capacity, the time we have available to sustain those relationships, and our attention span. It’s a formula known as Dunbar’s Number. His well-accepted research revealed several levels, or circles of relationships that were defined by the number of people in each group. The first circle, labeled “intimate friends,” is made up of four to eight people. In Women Finishing Well we labeled this group our circle of influence. These are the people you do life with—that love you no matter what—that pray with you and cry with you. They are your Elizabeths. After Mary got her news from Gabriel and a tip that her older relative Elizabeth was also expecting a miracle baby (Luke 1:36-45), she “hurried off to the hill country” to see her. (v. 39) She wasted no time building her circle of influence. She knew what was ahead and that she would need support and encouragement for the journey from a like-minded sister friend.   There are 59 one another scriptures in the New Testament. God created us to thrive in community. We weren’t meant to go it alone. We were meant to be at peace with one another, serve each other, pray for one another, love one another, be devoted to one another, honor one another above ourselves, stop passing judgment on one another, and carry one another’s burdens. And that is just the beginning. Mary needed Elizabeth to one another her through the coming nine or so months. Find the people that will stick with you no matter what.  Disruption is easier to face when you do it with a close friend by your side. They will help you hold unswervingly to the hope you profess.  Wait in prayer: Can you write down the names of two to four women that know you inside out? Women who share life together, pray for each other, and keep each other accountable to God? Women who know how to one-another each other? If you don’t have these women in your life, pray that God will help you start a list. Write down your first couple names and start praying. Everyday.  Worship: I Will Be Your Friend performed by Michael W. Smith  Links: -Link to lyric video for I Will Be Your Friend by Michael W. I have never been a big fan of planning for retirement. I'd rather build a business I love and look forward to doing that every day until I'm physically unable to do that any longer. This is the reason I set up my business with a work-from-home model. It has always been my goal to build my business around my lifestyle.A few years ago, a big company found me after watching some of my videos and hired me to train their people. This lead to additional work building university programs for companies who wanted to internalize my relationship-based sales curriculum. As I rode this wave of success, my business transitioned from a 100% work-from-home model to one that became a 50% work from home and 50% travel - resulting in 123 nights on the road in 2019 and over 100,000 air miles. The revenue was good and the travel was to places I liked so I took the opportunity to develop additional business at the travel destinations. Since I was careful to travel only during time when I had no family commitments and since my wife handles my business schedule, I hardly noticed the variance from my original mission to work from home. The perks of travel miles and status were enjoyed by everyone in the Lorenzo Klan as we'd often make my summer work assignments into family outings. A pandemic has a way of refocusing you.Suddenly, in March, I "woke up" to realize my business model wasn't the one I initially planed back in 2008.  Revenue - down. Fear - up.Now a couple of months into the COVID-19 business reality, I see a substantial opportunity in front of me. This is an opportunity for you as well. It's one we should both embrace, because if we don't, our businesses won't survive. Here are five ways to become more resilient and use that resilience to get through this current crisis and into each crisis that follows:One: Find a purpose that is bigger than yourself or your businessIn my case this is to help people build businesses that enable their lifestyles and to show them this doesn't mean making less money. Obviously, we don't need to be physically in front of people to grow our revenue. COVID-19 has taught us that. So there is nothing holding me back from bulding my business however I'd like. This was probably true pre-pandemic but I just didn't see it.This means you can get past the obstacles in your business. You may not see a way through them (or around them) in the present, but it is there. Keep looking. Two: Emotionally Distance Yourself From The FailureMany times we dwell on what we could have done differently. How we could have prevented this situation from occurring or how we could have done some things to make it less bad. That's not productive right now.  Don't live in the past.Do you after-action review and learn from what happened and then put it behind you. Many sports coaches use the technique of taking a video of a bad performance by their athletes, digging a hole and burying the video in the ground. This is a symbolic gesture that helps the athleet move on. You can do something similar. Write down what happened to you in as much detail as possible. Then take that sheet of paper and (safely) burn it or bury it.  Any return toward the negative thoughts you have will only prevent you from moving forward. Reject them. Three: Mentally Teleport Yourself Into The FutureWe don't have a time machine but our minds can't tell time. Close your eyes and project yourself into the future. Five years from now how will this situation look? How will you feel? How will you be spending your time?  This situation, even a pandemic, will look like only a brief moment in time and you'll be able to learn much about yourself and your ability.Four: Find the Silver Linking and Reflect Upon It OftenTransforming my business - in fact helping get it to what I always wanted it to be - is the silver lining of the pandemic. I keep that in the forefront of my mind as I go about my day-to-day business activities.  If you're trying to bounce back from a set back, think about how this will change you and your business for the better. Once you have that in your mind, keep it there.  Five: Play the Game Like You Have Nothing To LoseIf you've hit rock bottom or even if you haven't but you are really down, think about how it could get worse.  From a business perspective, you need to play as if you have nothing to lose. This means leaning in to what you fear. It means going head long at the issues and confronting them.Creditors calling you? Answer the phone or call them back. If you've got nothing to ofter them, explain that to them.  Set a date and time to follow-up on your terms.Customers cancelling? Proactively call all your clients and demonstrate so much value that can't cancel.Phone not ringing? Make lots of calls and stimulate discussion. The key: Don't wait for anything to get better. Make things happen.Overcoming difficulties in business and in life is critical to success. Resilience is not only important but necessary.

Pop quiz: What's one of the biggest hurdles to pursuing meaningful work? The belief that it won't pay enough to be worth it. That if you give your full heart, you won't be compensated in return, and the job will take (and take and take…) from you until you're completely drained.  There's lots of evidence to support this frustrating belief. You've probably heard plenty of tragic stories about public school teachers who can't afford to buy a home or social workers drowning in tens of thousands of dollars of student loan debt. And despite these options seeming like they doom you to living paycheck to paycheck…people willingly choose these paths all the time. And a number of them have found ways to do it while also making *good* money (without relying on a spouse or being a trust fund baby). You might think they're unicorns, but more people than you think have cracked the code on creating a lucrative living and financially thriving while doing meaningful work.  SHOW NOTES: Read more about Jordan Raynor Master of One: Find and Focus on the Work You Were Meant To Do RSVP Now for a Masterclass on the Pivot Method! She has over 25 years of experience in domestic and international consulting, training and coaching, and working in both software development and non-product-focused environments, including manufacturing (discrete and process), distribution, and sales and marketing.   On top of all of Christy’s licenses and titles, she is also a Certified SAFe® Program Consultant — which is also the topic of today’s show! There are a lot of horror stories around SAFe implementations because, in many cases, the original intent has been corrupted. So in this episode, Christy is breaking the SAFe framework down for listeners. She’s busting the myths that have given SAFe a bad rap and then providing her tips for a successful and effective implementation of SAFe!   Key Takeaways What is SAFe? SAFe is a framework for predictability at scale Empowers complex organizations to achieve the benefits of Lean-Agile software and systems development at scale Christy busts some myths regarding the SAFe: “Waterfall disguised as Agility” — not true; it is a framework with elasticity in how it can be implemented “It’s very prescriptive” — though there is an overarching framework and path that is laid out, the fundamental mindset underneath it is Agility “SAFe stops at training the leaders about velocity” — untrue! Just train the leaders and just get started “You can just put aside vulnerability” — you cannot, so instead get in front of it and break down the walls by discussing the discomfort and change that comes with implementation “SAFe always goes wrong and completely goes against an Agile mindset” — SAFe as a framework does not do this; it’s perpetrated by the consultants and the organizations that don’t fully commit to implementing it How to ensure your SAFe implementation is effective and successful: Start small and ‘nail it before you scale it’ Start with training your leaders and give them a compelling ‘why’ Create a Lean-Agile center of excellence where you can bring everyone together to help identify the system-level items and issues that are going to need to be addressed as you all move through the implementation roadmap As a manager, reject bad plans (this is very beneficial towards getting more predictable deliveries) Implement the events within SAFe well (and safely) so that your organization can be set up for success Understand Lean thinking Establish safety within the team and the organization to build trust Stay nimble Listen to what the client needs, not what you think they need   Mentioned in this Episode: Christy Erbeck’s LinkedIn Scaled Agile Framework Certified SAFe® Program Consultant Agile Coaches’ Corner Ep. 1: “Do Scrum Well Before Scaling!” Agile Coaches’ Corner Ep. 22: “The Role of Managers in Agile Organizations with Esther Derby” Brené Brown Brené Brown — Dare to Lead Start With Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action, by Simon Sinek Relentless Forward Progress: A Guide to Running Ultramarathons, by Bryon Powell How to Measure Anything: Finding the Value of Intangibles in Business, by Douglas W. They start off discussing sprint retrospectives and how to make them more creative and fun; later shifting to discussing frameworks and which are appropriate where; and then lastly, they take a look at agile vs. waterfall.   Key Takeaways “How does a Scrum Master make the sprint retrospective more creative and fun?” Allow room for creativity by creating a safe environment through structure Slowly introduce new ways to run the retrospective so the team can look at their work and interactions differently Get to know your team — the better you know them, the better you can adapt the retrospective to fit their needs Use a method such as the Sailboat Retrospective to get the team outside of their regular 3-question retrospective Try the ‘Genie Retrospective’ and ‘The Four Ls Retrospective’ (and don’t be afraid to customize them to make them your own, either!) How do we create a growing culture of discipleship in and through the River Church? Creating a culture starts with one person at a time, growing closer to Jesus and showing others how to do the same. That means you and that means me. That means ALL OF US! A disciple, is simply someone who believes in Jesus and seeks to follow him in his or her daily life with all of their being. Obviously, in Jesus' day, disciples were actually IN the presence of Jesus. Today we have His word. We have the Holy Spirit. We have each other to model the work of Jesus, teach the ways of Jesus, and love with the heart of Jesus. This Sunday we are going to look at the relationship between Paul and Timothy and how Paul encouraged Timothy to look around for others to disciple also. It's called multiplication - one teaches one, and that one teaches, another, and so on and so forth until ultimately the whole world is full of little colonies of Jesus and the kingdom of God. Join us THIS SUNDAY for the challenge! Imagine, EACH OF US following Jesus and becoming a disciple! Imagine EACH OF US looking around and teaching someone else how to do the same!!!! I believe this is our opportunity to build God's church and to bring the tender love of God to all the earth! Denise

Xian'er replied: "See, how can you understand what I say if you don’t read? " Below are quotes from my Shifu’s new book, Say Good Things—Master Xuecheng’s insight on the path to speaking like a Buddha. May you find your own aspiration. When we were kids, we'd believe anything. Wizards exist. Blowing out all the candles grants wishes. Storks deliver babies. Thankfully, we've outgrown a lot of those silly beliefs. But, have we also outgrown the need for…belief? What helpful or logical role could belief and faith play in a mature perspective of life? In this message, we admit how powerful belief is and how to point it in a direction that will stand the test of time.

Experiment, experiment, experiment - this is a short answer of course. But the truth is, until you give a few diets at least a 2-week trial, being really consistent with the rules you establish, until you experiment, you'll never know, no matter what the experts in nutrition field tell you, that's why some diets work for some people and don't work for others – there is no such thing as one-diet-fits-all. But besides that? Besides that, to learn what your perfect diet is, you got to: Educate yourself about essential nutrition requirements for your body, maybe get a consultation with a nutritionist to learn what nutrients, micro and macro, your body needs to be in your diet, and then learn about the best foods (the ones you like the most) to get those essential nutrients from. Build a sample meal plan, that works for you around those foods. Eat a lot of non-starchy green and colorful vegetables in any case, some fermented foods, fatty fish – proven by people living the longest to be the most beneficial kinds of foods you can’t skip if your goal is ultimate health, mental and physical performance, best body.
