"There are two kinds of people in the world - people who are burned out, and people who know they are burned out." - Greg McKeown There is an epidemic of exhaustion and burnout in not only Hollywood but globally across countless industries. The culture of overwork and exploitation specifically in the entertainment industry is beyond toxic at this point, and something needs to change. My theory is that many of the people at the top in Hollywood did not get there because they are always the best at what they do or because they are great leaders. I believe a lot of those who dictate how the industry works got where they are today because they have simply been willing to endure the most abuse, and they are the ones willing to maintain the status quo - i.e., saving money at the expense of saving lives. “The Great Resignation” is evidence that people are fed up with the status quo. The old model of “work longer and harder” is not a tenable model anymore. There are no more hours left in the day to work harder, therefore finding a way to work smarter is the only solution left. Luckily, there is a new model already out there, and my guest today, best selling author Greg McKeown, is here to tell us all about how to live not only an essential but also an effortless life. Greg is a return guest who made his first appearance on the show to talk about his book Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less (which I thought so highly of I included it as core curriculum in my Focus Yourself program). In an ideal world, being a creative professional means you love what you do and your passion for your work fuels a meaningful and fulfilling life that also has a positive impact on the world. Whether you write, direct, produce, edit, or work on set - that's the dream we all set out to achieve when we join the industry. In the real world, however, you quickly discover that passion can also lead to exploitation. Toxic work environments, unreasonable deadlines and schedules, and unrelenting work hours extinguish even the deepest, hottest burning passions inside of us. Respect, dignity, and a basic appreciation for the work we do are essential ingredients in keeping that passion alive and sustaining us through long careers. Unfortunately, these concepts have been pushed aside in favor of faster, cheaper, better. Today I'm excited to discuss the realities of working on the production side of the industry with Shay'La Banks and Nickolaus Brown, both of whom work in the costume department and were recently featured with me in the recent Variety article IATSE Crew Members Share First-Hand Accounts of Set Life. Shay'La is a Costume Supervisor who has worked on shows such as The Voice, Insecure, Grown-ish & The Oscars. Nickolaus has been working in costumes for almost 25 years for films such as Free Guy, The Lake House, and Dukes of Hazzard, and TV shows like How to Get Away w/ Murder, Scandal, and Glee. This honest conversation gets to the very core of the many issues that production crews face while on set. You'll hear candid stories about the horrible conditions and disrespectful behavior they both endure on a routine basis and how it affects their health and relationships. You'll also hear that despite the enthusiasm they both have for their craft they both desperately crave the change that is so necessary in our industry. Dr. Kristen Willeumier (@kwilleumier) conducted her graduate research in the laboratory of Neurophysiology at the University of California, Los Angeles, and the laboratory of Neurogenetics at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.  She received MS degrees in Physiological science and Neurobiology and a Ph.D. degree in Neurobiology from the University of California, Los Angeles. She was a postdoctoral scientist in the Department of Neurology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center where she continued her work in the field of neurodegenerative disease.  She was the recipient of a National Research Service Award Fellowship from the National Institutes of Health and has presented her work internationally.  Having served as the Director of Neuroimaging Research for the Amen Clinics, she led the efforts in utilizing imaging technologies to understand the neurobiological correlates underlying psychiatric disorders.  In this capacity, she oversaw many pioneering studies, including a clinical research trial investigating the long-term effects of repetitive subconcussive impacts in National Football League players, and developed a protocol to successfully reverse brain damage and improve cognitive health! I created Optimize Yourself so that I could provide the resources to help creative professionals find fulfillment in their work and love what they do...but not at the expense of their health, their relationships, or their sanity. A natural extension of this is that we must be valued & respected for the work that we do. Without respect, no matter how much we love our jobs, our careers won't be sustainable and our passion will eventually become indifference (and sometimes even hatred). We become overworked, disrespected, and burned out. This is unfortunately what's happening right now to tens-of-thousands of below the line workers in the entertainment industry as clearly portrayed by the meteoric rise of the @IA_Stories Instagram account. In part because of the horror stories this account has amplified, The IATSE union and the AMPTP have come to a standstill in contract negotiations and the union is asking its members to vote and authorize a strike. This is a historic moment in the union's history, and it's important that all of us understand what is truly at stake beyond the deal points and the percentages. That's why I decided to have an “All-hands-on-deck” call with my Optimizer coaching & mentorship community to provide an open forum where union and non-union members alike could ask their questions, voice their opinions, and gain a better understanding of the true impact this pending vote (and strike) can have on our industry for decades to come. "We work to live. We don't live to work." - Tom Grane When I first began my career in Hollywood the concept of life outside of work was completely foreign to me. I assumed the only way to reach my goals was to sacrifice my health and sanity for the sake of a great résumé, only to discover those early habits become lifelong habits if you’re not careful. Once this mentality sets in and you set this expectation with others it can be practically impossible to reverse. That is why I am actively trying to change the conversation around our “get it done at all costs” work culture and collaborate with employers and business owners who understand the importance of work-life balance. Early in my career I was fortunate enough to experience a work culture where well-being was a priority at what was then a small fledgling trailer & marketing agency. Fast-forward fifteen years and today Mob Scene is one of the top movie marketing companies in the business - largely because of the culture that co-founder and CEO Tom Grane created from the very start. This innovative company has been an integral part of the marketing campaigns for projects like Avatar, Stranger Things, Fast 9, Wonder Woman, Joker, Knives Out, and The Trial of the Chicago 7...and that’s just recently. When it comes to health and wellness there is no shortage of information on the interwebs. I would argue that there is way too much information, and trying to sift through what's true and what's garbage is enough to make anyone throw up their hands in despair. Because it’s so difficult to discern what works and what’s a gimmick, most people only approach their health on an as-needed basis (who’s got time for anything else?). But what if you strive to be more than just “not sick” and instead you want to optimize your health? I spent most of my life simply thinking the doctor was there to help me when I was sick, which led me to literally hitting rock bottom both mentally and physically before I decided to take an active role in my health and well-being. When I finally looked for help I was disillusioned by what conventional western medicine doctors had to offer me. Then I found Dr. Edison de Mello and The Akasha Center. Discern what you should do. a. Am I called to engage? b. Is God providing me with the means, resources, gifting? c. Have I sought God's guidance? d. Have I sought wise counsel? e. Are my heart and head in the right place? Do I need the credit or glory or spotlight? f. With whom will I partner? Engage. Q: Engaging may mean you defend others. Whom might God be calling you to defend? How can you do so in a way that honors Jesus? August 23, 2020 Sermon notes and discussion questions Q: “What's the first thing you think about when you hear the word justice?” Does God care about justice? God cares a ton about justice because he loves people more than we can imagine. Q: Read Matthew 23:23. How does this apply in our day? How does the Bible define justice? To do justice is to do what is right for someone else. Q: What is the connection between righteousness and justice. 5 principles of Biblical Justice All resources belong to God. I can't claim what's in my pocket, nor can I claim what's in yours. A lot of the Proverbs can be summarized to tell us that the wicked person takes advantage of others for his own gain, but a Godly person disadvantages themselves for another person's gain. I'm so thrilled to welcome Madison Griffiths into the Castaway Studios for our first studio episode of 2019. Our previous ALL DOG themed episode was held at the wonderful Merri Creek Tavern. Madison tells me her origin story as writer which all began when Vice published an article of hers in 2016 called An Open Letter to My Vagina: Sex, Pain, and Vaginismus In 2017 Madison and Lucinda Price had a live online conversation called No Chill as part of the Digital Writers Festival. This went on to become a six part podcast series presented by Pedestrian TV. On the three year anniversary of leaving an abusive relationship Madison had a powerful dream that motivated her to start her own deeply personal and powerful podcast called Tender. Madison then tells me about her experience performing on a poetry open mic for the first time. And we discuss how vibrant the spoken word scene is in Melbourne. Breakdown in communication by Johnny Moretti. The risks and joys of sleeping naked by Annie Molenaar. AKA Celebrant Lady Love. and Unholy Matrimony Flip It and Reverse It. I nearly always sleep naked. I say nearly because sometimes I will fall asleep in my undies or t-shirt or both. But every time I awake, I am liberated from my clothing. Sometime during the night I have removed them in my sleep and I never have any memory of it whatsoever. I imagine myself wriggling from the cocoon of my clothing bit by bit during the night and sometimes I forget about exactly where that clothing goes and I’ll think where the hell have all my undies gone? Until it’s time to change the sheets and there they are wedged at the end of the bed, sometimes two or three pairs Curled and cuddled up like sleeping cats. When alone in a house, as I often up when house sitting, I will often rise naked, and walk bleary eyes into the kitchen to turn the kettle on, maybe whack a muffin or two into the toaster. Sometimes I’ll even drop a banging hiphop playlist on to put a little boost into butt and a little sass into my strut as I start grooving around the kitchen. One such morning at a house sit in Carlton I was doing exactly this when I suddenly thought I heard a sound above the banging bass thumps of Missy Elliott. When I looked up , there was the cleaning lady lugging a vacuum cleaner down the hallway. She had her head down and hadn’t noticed me yet. I panicked I was in open ground there wasn’t enough time to flee. I seized the closest object I could find to protect my modesty. So when the cleaning lady finally looked up, there I was holding a frying pan in front of my groin. The owner told me the cleaning lady wasn’t coming until the next day, the cleaning lady was told something else. A breakdown in communication of mortifying consequences. She dropped the vacuum and returned from whence she came. I fled to my room and shut the door. Missy Elliott kept booming throughout the house, singing “Is it worth it? And in my second interview with Eddie (here's part 1 if you haven't listened yet), he and I candidly discuss his experience editing Top Gun: Maverick and what drove him to asking for help before it was too late.The grueling work hours required to produce blockbuster content can literally be deadly if you don't care for yourself properly. When your livelihood depends on your creativity, your mental health is no longer a luxury, it's a job requirement. But many of us have spent so many years (maybe our entire lives), ignoring our self-care needs at the expense of our jobs - no matter the cost - we don't actually know how to care for ourselves when the time comes we have no other choice. And in my first interview with Eddie (here's part 2 where he talks about editing Maverick specifically), he and I talk about his early career choices and how he was able to become one of the top feature editors in the world…without ever going to film school.With all the unique stories that come with ‘making it' in Hollywood (or any creative career), it's easy to assume the way someone else became successful could never happen for you.
