As is customary, HUD released its annual report on homelessness at the end of 2024. It revealed a startling year-over-year increase in homelessness among individuals and families in the United States. Among the devastating data, there were bright spots such as a decrease in homeless veterans. But the reporting and punditry surrounding the report was less than stellar, and the news was buried in a matter of days. Crucially, some of the worst reporting on HUD’s findings came from left wing media sources who pointed to immigration as one of the drivers of the increase, conveniently and uncritically parroting conservative talking points while ignoring the more pertinent narratives. “Society has already defined them (the homeless) for us; you'd never see me as a housed person, yet their identity is their lack of housing.” - Kevin Adler -------------------------------------------------------------------   In a truly meaningful episode of "Joseph Jaffe is not Famous," I had the honor of hosting Kevin Adler, the passionate author of "When We Walk By" and a social entrepreneur dedicated to transforming lives. Our conversation delved deep into the stark realities of homelessness, challenging societal perceptions and exploring actionable solutions Some of the key takeaways from this episode include: Homelessness is a complex issue that reduces people's identities and humanity in society's view.  Building empathy and relational connections with those experiencing homelessness is important for addressing the issue. Challenging stereotypes like the "homeless to Harvard" narrative is important to avoid further stigmatization. Rebuilding social support systems and providing financial assistance are key parts of addressing homelessness.  Individual acts of kindness and recognizing humanity in others can help shift perspectives. -------------------------------------------------------------------   Here are the show notes:    Homelessness and its impact with a social entrepreneur. (4:49) Fame, acting, and a 20-minute conversation with John Cleese. (11:30) Reducing homelessness by recognizing individual identities. (16:16) Homelessness and the complexity of choice vs. circumstance. (23:18) The American dream and individualism, with a critique of the self-made man myth. (30:19) Empathy and connection for people experiencing homelessness. (36:13) Homelessness, paternalism, and the potential for positive change. (42:24) Addressing homelessness through connections, support, and financial assistance. (51:09) Finding balance and perspective in life, with personal stories and humor. (59:55)   -------------------------------------------------------------------   "Seven out of 10 Americans are one paycheck away from being homeless." - Pras Michel -------------------------------------------------------------------   If you like what you see, please subscribe to the show: bit.ly/subscribetotheshow Learn more about your ad choices. At least 120-thousand people are experiencing homelessness in any given night in Australia. And this isn't a problem that only we are facing, with many countries around the globe struggling to tackle the homelessness issue.  However, this isn't the case in Finland.   In their capital, Helsinki, the government aims to end homelessness – or get it down to where becoming homeless is likely to be very temporary for most people – by 2025.  So how are they doing this? And could Australia learn from what they're doing right?  On this episode, Bension Siebert speaks with Juha Kahila, Head of International Affairs at the Y-Foundation, as he joins us from Finland. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Read the full transcript here. How big of a problem is homelessness in the US? How many people in large cities like New York City or Los Angeles are unhoused? What's the best language to use when discussing this issue? How is "homelessness" defined? We usually don't label people without food or water as "foodless" or "waterless"; so why do we label people without homes as "homeless"? Why do we so often look away from the problem, both literally and figuratively? What are the most common events or circumstances that cause people to lose their housing options? What does research show about how unhoused people actually spend their money? What percentage of an average city's unhoused population is represented by the "visible" portion, the people we see on street corners or in tent camps? What percent of unhoused people struggle with mental health problems or substance abuse? What's the average life expectancy of an unhoused person? How much do governments (local, state, and/or federal) spend on homelessness annually? What's the best predictor of whether or not a person will suffer from chronic homelessness? What help — from government institutions, religious organizations, nonprofits, etc. — is available to unhoused people? How hard is it to meet your basic needs when you don't have a place to live? What should we do about unhoused people who refuse help or treatment for mental illnesses or substance abuse? Which nonprofits are working on homelessness? And what kinds of impacts have they made? What interventions are actually effective at solving homelessness on a large scale? What mistakes have the political left and right (in the US) made as they've tried to address homelessness? Demographically speaking, what kinds of people tend to make up unhoused populations in the US?Kevin F. Adler is a social entrepreneur, sociologist, and author who never learned the word "stranger", and tries to live accordingly. Currently, he is the Founder-In-Residence and Chairman of the Board of Miracle Messages, a nonprofit organization that helps people experiencing homelessness rebuild their social support systems and financial security through family reunification services, a phone buddy program, and the first basic income pilot for unhoused individuals in the US. He is also the bestselling author of When We Walk By: Forgotten Humanity, Broken Systems, and the Role We Can Each Play in Ending Homelessness in America, which Publishers Weekly called "a must-read for anyone interested in solving the problem of homelessness." Kevin's pioneering work on homelessness and "relational poverty" as an overlooked form of poverty has been featured in the New York Times, Washington Post, PBS NewsHour, The Guardian, LA Times, and in his TED Talk. Motivated by his late mother's work teaching at underserved adult schools and nursing homes, and his late uncle's 30 years living on the streets, Kevin believes in a future where everyone is seen as invaluable and interconnected. In this eye-opening episode of "Faith in Action," we delve into the transformative potential of churches and faith-based organizations (FBOs) in the battle against homelessness. With over 580,000 individuals facing homelessness in the United States, the question of how community faith, mental health support, and innovative ideas can foster hope and provide tangible solutions is more relevant than ever. Join us as we explore how congregations are not just places of worship but pivotal community pillars offering food assistance, shelter, health services, and much more to those in need. From the essential role of food pantries and soup kitchens in feeding the hungry to the critical support of shelter and housing assistance, we uncover the multifaceted efforts of churches to address basic needs and beyond. Financial counseling, health screenings, and job training programs stand out as beacons of hope, demonstrating the church's capacity to uplift individuals beyond temporary aid. Highlighting the Faith Collaborative to End Homelessness's partnership with Los Angeles County's Homeless Initiative, we shed light on the often-unseen impact of FBOs in providing crucial services and fostering community resilience. Through interviews with key figures and stories of hope, we address the golden question of overcoming practical challenges while spotlighting the dire cost of inaction. This episode also takes a deep dive into the logistics of transforming church spaces into sanctuaries of support, from cost-effective modifications for housing to the integration of community and recreational spaces for well-being. We emphasize the power of strategic partnerships, volunteer mobilization, and the alignment of faith with social justice to not just envision but enact a future where homelessness is a thing of the past. Whether you're a person of faith, a community organizer, or someone passionate about social change, "Faith in Action" offers not just insight but a call to action. What happens if you give a homeless person a house, with no strings attached? In 2007 Finland decided to switch to a radical new approach to homelessness called ‘housing first', in which homeless people are simply offered their own apartment, with no expectations of them except paying the rent (usually covered by their benefits); alongside this they are given whatever support they need to remain housed, for as long as they need it. Proponents of 'housing first' argue that it is much easier for homeless people to sort out issues such as addiction or poor mental health when they have a secure home. The results so far seem to bear this out: around 90% of people offered an apartment remain housed, a much higher rate than under the previous system. However, critics argue that the approach could be much harder to implement in countries without Finland's extensive social welfare system or good stock of affordable housing.Erika Benke visits the Väinölä Housing Unit outside Helsinki, an emergency shelter which was converted into 35 individual flats for formerly homeless people. What difference has having their own place made to the residents? And are they off the streets for good?

Think about the last time that you saw or interacted with an unhoused person. What did you do? What did you say? Did you offer money or a smile, or did you avert your gaze? Kevin F. Adler and Donald W. Burnes's book When We Walk By: Forgotten Humanity, Broken Systems, and the Role We Can Each Play in Ending Homelessness in America (North Atlantic Books, 2023) takes an urgent look at homelessness in America, showing us what we lose--in ourselves and as a society--when we choose to walk past and ignore our neighbors in shelters, insecure housing, or on the streets. And it brilliantly shows what we stand to gain when we embrace our humanity and move toward evidence-based people-first, community-driven solutions, offering social analysis, economic and political histories, and the real stories of unhoused people. Authors Kevin F. Adler and Donald W. Burnes, with Amanda Banh and Andrijana Bilbija, recast chronic homelessness in the U.S. as a byproduct of twin crises: our social services systems are failing, and so is our humanity. Readers will learn: Why our brains have been trained to overlook our unhoused neighbors The social, economic, and political forces that shape myths like "all homeless people are addicts" and "they'd have a house if they got a job" What conservative economics gets wrong about housing insecurity What relational poverty is, and how to shift away from "us versus them" thinking That for many Americans, housing insecurity is just one missed paycheck away Who "the homeless" really are--and why that might surprise you What you can do to help, starting today A necessary, deeply humanizing read that goes beyond theory and policy analysis to offer engaged solutions with compassion and heart, When We Walk By is a must-read for anyone who cares about homelessness, housing solutions, and their own humanity. EPISODE 1864: In this KEEN ON show, Andrew talks to Kevin F. Adler, co-author of WHEN WE WALK BY, about the forgotten humanity and broken systems causing today's homelessness crisis in America Kevin F. Adler is the author of When We Walk By: Forgotten Humanity, Broken Systems, and the Role We Can Each Play in Ending Homelessness in America, which will be published on November 7th, 2023, and is based on his pioneering work over the past decade tackling homelessness and “relational poverty” on the streets. As the Founder and CEO of Miracle Messages, an award-winning nonprofit organization that helps people experiencing homelessness rebuild their social support systems and financial security, Kevin is leading a revolution in how we treat our unhoused neighbors: as people to be loved, not problems to be solved. Miracle Messages has helped over 800 unhoused individuals reunite with their loved ones, matched hundreds more for weekly calls and texts with caring volunteers around the world as phone buddies, and created the first basic income pilot of its kind in the United States, which resulted in 66% of unhoused recipients getting housed. By 2024, Miracle Messages plans to distribute over $1 million directly to unhoused individuals, as part of a randomized control trial in partnership with USC and with major funding from Google.org and others.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. Andrew lives in San Francisco, is married to Cassandra Knight, Google's VP of Litigation & Discovery, and has two grown children.

As cities across the country grapple with a persistent homelessness crisis, a leading advocate offers a compassionate look at the problem, the people, and the possible solutions—including what you can do to help.  Kevin Adler returns to The Commonwealth Club to provide an urgent look at homelessness in America, showing us what we lose—in ourselves and as a society—when we choose to walk past and ignore our neighbors in shelters, insecure housing, or on the streets.  Adler is the co-author of When We Walk By, which argues that we have sacrificed our humanity by ignoring, downplaying, and refusing to address the homelessness problem. The authors offer an evidence-based people-first approach and community-driven solutions, and they lay out some practical steps that individuals can take to address homelessness. In a conference conducted by Valley Economic Alliance at California State University, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass draws a connection between increasing homelessness and dwindling local businesses.Talking to a roomful of San Fernando Valley business owners and leaders, Bass sent a signal that Los Angeles was open for businesses and also tied the two issues. While speaking, the Mayor said that one of the major problems the state faces is income disparity and the increasing number of tents on streets, both of which can be solved by enabling more good-paying jobs.“And who employs Angelenos, other than small businesses?” she asked the crowd. But she doubts businesses will shift to a city with over 40,000 people on the streets. So the first task she carried out was to issue an executive directive to quicken the construction of economic houses, and for the time being, they shifted homeless people to hotels and motels temporarily.Support the showSign Up For Exclusive Episodes At: https://reasonabletv.com/LIKE & SUBSCRIBE for new videos every day. https://www.youtube.com/c/NewsForReasonablePeople

What would it take to house every single homeless person in San Francisco? That question has long vexed politicians, advocates for the unhoused and ordinary citizens. But new analysis paints a gloomy picture of the costs.Ending unsheltered homelessness would require vast increases in housing, shelter and prevention services, according to the report from the city's Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing and homelessness consultancy firm Focus Strategies. That would cost the city another $1.45 billion over three years. And it would take over $410 million each year after that to keep the programs running. The city's latest homeless census in February counted 7,754 people experiencing homelessness in San Francisco. Most—4,397 of them—were sleeping outside. Support the showSign Up For Exclusive Episodes At: https://reasonabletv.com/LIKE & SUBSCRIBE for new videos every day. https://www.youtube.com/c/NewsForReasonablePeople
