In today's episode, we discuss Copperhead Strike at Carowinds in Charlotte, NC. This Mack Rides multi-launch coaster has been criticized by some enthusiasts, but praised by many others. Despite being built in 2019, it is deeply rooted in the history of the park. Join us as we discuss Thunder Road and White Lightnin', legally obtained moonshine stills, and Granny Byrd's award-winning jam. This one has been a long time coming! We have been wanting to cover the work of Ron Ormond since we first stepped into the cave, many years ago! He has been slowly gaining more recognition recently and a box set of his films has been released. Starting out on stage, he moved into films and had a successful run making exploitation movies primarily for drive-in audiences. After an accident in a small plane which he survived, he became a devout christian and redirected his efforts toward religious and anti-communist propaganda. This guy really does have the goods and the two films we look at on this episode REALLY prove it! We start off with "White Lightnin' Road" from 1967. Filled with moonshiners and stock car racers, this one really hits the sweet spot. There is romance, action, deceit and murder in this one and it's all wonderfully over-the-top yet still extremely captivating. There is some sort of bizarre magic going on that makes this stuff work...it's really something you have to see to believe. We follow that with 1968's "The Exotic Ones" where a strip club in New Orleans captures a swamp monster and displays it as a way to attract a crowd. The lighting is lurid, the strippers are badass, the criminals are ruthless and it's sheer perfection all the way down! If it's not obvious at this point, we LOVED both movies and can't wait to watch more from Mr. Ormond, especially some of the later, religiously-focused stuff! We then proceed to list the various things we've been watching for fun. Please let us know what you thought of the show, and send us some suggestions for future episodes. Dreams of Consciousness Podcast Episode 262 features an interview with Steve "The Krusher" Paradise and Seb Duster of Obelyskkh. As heavy as a menhir and equally imponderable, the German trio Obelyskkh pulled from their stoner and noise rock backgrounds to create their own version of slow, heavy music. I spoke with drummer Steve "The Krusher" Paradise and bassist Seb Duster about whether they consider Obelyskkh to be a "metal" band, and how paring down to a power trio affected their style. We also discussed why they decided to record their latest album The Ultimate Grace Of God live, and how they integrate noise and ambient parts into their music. My thanks to Steve and Seb for speaking with me, and to you for listening. Jiles always was a big fucker. Tall, sturdy built, he played a defensive lineman in high school. Ol number 85. It was a fair balance for his choir and band enthusiasms which were his true passion. He got himself into college, but when the night time DJ gig started bringing in real scratch, the college just had to go. And apart from a couple years of mandatory military service, Djing is where he stayed. Though workin radar in Fort Bliss is still in radio, I guess. He tried his hand at songwriting, and george Jones turned his ‘White Lightnin’ into a hit. Sadly another of his penned tunes ‘Running Bear’ didn’t get immediate enough release. But he finally conned someone into letting him record one of his own songs, and it became a top ten record. It was time for Jiles to head out with the real stars.
