Ever been surprised by the book that caught your interest? I've been there! Once a die-hard fan of mystery and thriller novels, I, found myself unexpectedly charmed by the world of romance books. Tune in as I walk you through what I've been reading. If you're looking for your next romance novel, I have some ideas. And for all my fellow mystery and thriller enthusiasts out there, I've got you covered with recommendations from authors like Riley Sager and Ruth Ware. But not all books leave a lasting impression. I'll be discussing a few titles that couldn't live up to the hype. However,  I have some alternatives!   In the episode, I refer to The Icebreaker as The Heartbreaker and The Last to Vanish as The Last to Finish. Apologies to the authors for pronouncing their titles incorrectly. Set in the isolated Dark Fell Barn, where three women are on edge as they receive a threatening note that one of their husbands will be murdered. Gilly talks with Olivia about the characters, the importance of the isolation of the environment for building the tension, and an old movie called “A Letter to Three Wives” that sparked her idea. “It's a kind of messy process but it's the only one I know, really,” she says of working her way from first draft to a significantly different final draft. THE LONG WEEKEND was published by William Morrow on March 29,2022. Danger and interpersonal drama abound, with a slew of outrageous twists adding to the fun. A soapy, claustrophobic page-turner."––Kirkus "Hawkins twists revenge, madness, and an increasingly menacing setting into a cleverly plotted nightmare in paradise. A must-read for fans of Ruth Ware."––Booklist (starred) "With a gothic sense of foreboding and plenty of dark secrets...the plot builds to an explosive conclusion. Hawkins uses the tensions among her young, beautiful characters to take a look at the intersections of class and gender, but there are no innocent people in this treacherous paradise. Fans of the film The Beach and television's Lost will be enthralled."––Shelf Awareness “After reinventing Jane Eyre in The Wife Upstairs, Rachel Hawkins is giving Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None a modern twist in Reckless Girls.”––PopSugar "This fun and exciting tale of suspense that happens to be both topical and tropical...Hawkins keeps the fun, engaging writing style of The Wife Upstairs, but gives readers a totally different experience with Reckless Girls―a darker tone with higher stakes, more tension, and much edgier characters."––The Nerd Daily --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/gobookmart-review/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/gobookmart-review/support

Summary: Welcome to our first episode! Holly and Devin come together to discuss modern retellings of classic stories. They compare and contrast each book with the original text, and evaluate how the authors wove the classic plot lines and characters into a modern retelling. Holly and Devin share books they're excited to read next, and then dive into pop culture spiciness to wrap things up.  Topics Discussed: The Heart (1:47): Devin shares her thoughts on Ayesha and Last by Uzma Jalaluddin, a retelling of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Her key takeaways included:  The structures of Austen-era society aligned almost perfectly with Muslim modern society including family involvement in love and marriage. Jalaluddin went further than Austen with harsh critiques of modern society's racism, sexism, fatphobia and xenophobia.    Ayesha at Last takes a plotline folks have read and watched a million times and uses it as a gateway into a culture and ideologies with which some might be unfamiliar.   The Dagger (13:13): Holly shares her perspective on The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins, a retelling of Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë. Her key takeaways included: The Southern Gothic rendering of the haunting classic featuring transgressive thoughts, desires, and impulses was a fresh but resonant take on Jane Eyre. Hawkins leveraged a “Desperate Housewives” dynamic with women in the neighborhood to explore the fragile social order and Jane's desperation to belong. Jane becomes intrigued by Bea (the deceased wife) and her rags-to-riches tale even as she remains haunted by her own past, finding herself working to, in some ways, become Bea.  Hot Off the Shelf (31:30): Holly: Scarlet, book two of The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer Devin: A Better Man, book 15 of the Armand Gamache series by Louise Penny What's Making Our Hearts Race (34:27): Holly: “The Vow”, series on HBO about cult NXIVM and leader Keith Raniere Devin: “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” the most recent Marvel film released Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

Rachel Hawkins' 2020 release of “The Wife Upstairs” was a huge hit. The contemporary thriller inspired by “Jane Eyre” was the first release outside of the YA genre and showed she can craft a page-turner for a variety of audiences. Rachel talks with Olivia about “Reckless Girls” (published January 2022) that tracks Lux and her boyfriend Nico as they sail off from Hawaii in search of Meroe Island, a remote location with a dark, menacing history with other twenty-somethings in search of adventure and packed with secrets. Rachel talks about her recent success under the pseudonym Erin Sterling, choosing a new name, her love of literature, and her next thriller in the works. In a special Moment with Margaret, Margaret Stewart recommends a 2010 book with a nautical theme, “Bloody Jack” by L.A. Meyer, and explains why she has no interest in slowing down her audio speed.
