A one-time student at the college of William and Mary, Will Toledo and his band have released “The Scholars,” a rock opera about students at a fictional university.
Jonny calls Will Toledo of Car Seat Headrest to discuss the band's forthcoming Rock Opera LP The Scholars. Described as audacious, ambitious and a reminder of what rock can be, The Scholars is well worth a very close listen! Whakarongo mai to hear about the process on this set-to-be legendary album out 2 May.
Car Seat Headrest is a band from Seattle. Their newest record, The Scholars, is out soon on Matador Records. We spoke with Will Toledo from the band about the bizarre crime scene involving Weezer's bassist's wife, Will's antiquated ways, the muck of industry dealings, writing a rock opera, really long songs, his favorite Radiohead record, particular eating habits, histamines, we need to suffer a bit more, Will teaches Chris how to reset his chi, his gut health, autistic artwork and critters, and lastly, a disclaimer from Will: sitting with your back against the bedboard for hours is not recommended by medical or spiritual experts. A very special episode! instagram.com/notcarseatheadrest twitter.com/donetodeath twitter.com/themjeans howlonggone.com Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Car Seat Headrest is a moody, DIY project led by Will Toledo. Birthing their debut music in 2010, the lofi and introspective project thrust itself into the greater indie scene. Car Seat Headrest continues to expand its boundaries with a refined production approach dominated by electronic instrumentation."Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg
Indiecast hosts Steven Hyden and Ian Cohen oftentimes reflect on formative albums from their younger days, but what year definitively had the best music? In this week's episode, Steven and Ian answer listener questions about the greatest year for music (spoiler alert: it's not 2022) (33:24), which albums have impeccable tracklists (Radiohead, we're looking at you) (26:22), and their picks for the dream festival lineup (several pre-2000s artists make the cut) (41:31).Along with answering fan emails, Steven and Ian talked about some of the more ludicrous indie news from this week. Car Seat Headrest's Will Toledo officially came out as a furry in a recent interview, a fact that has been fairly out in the open for some time now. Ariel Pink had one of his first big interviews after being canceled for attending the January 6th D.C. riots, and it was in the Jewish magazine Tablet (8:02). They also shout-out Ian's recent interview with Bartees Strange, whose new album Farm To Table dropped today (19:05).New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. If we could travel back to 2016, not a day would go by without hearing something positive about, or simply just hearing Car Seat Headrest. Teens of Denial had music nerds and critical darlings everywhere swooning. The thirteenth (!) record in 23 year old, Will Toledo's catalogue, provided hooks, riffs, lyrics and arrangements so ludicrously sweet, we still yearn for them to this day. TRACKS PLAYED: ‘Fill in the Blank' ‘Vincent' ‘Destroyed By Hippie Powers' ‘(Joe Gets Kicked Out of School for Using) Drugs With Friends' ‘Not What I Needed' ‘Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales' '1937 State Park' ‘Unforgiving Girl (She's Not An)' ‘Cosmic Hero' ‘Connect the Dots (The Saga of Frank Sinatra)' ‘Joe Goes to School'. Top bloke singer/guitarist Jackson Phelan from Melbourne band RAT!hammock joins the show this week to chat Alex G 'Beach Music' and Car Seat Headrest 'Twin Fantasy'! Jackson dishes up two of the most thought out tattoo designs yet, which in comparison to the rest of ours isn't hard. Enjoy!

It's that time of the year folks. There's a certain smell in the air, a certain feel. It's March. College basketball is front and center. I hope you're all as pumped as we are! On this weeks pod, we're focusing exclusively on the tournaments. The women tip off today, the men get started tomorrow, and it's going to be a glorious four days of MAC basketball in Cleveland. To open up the show, Zach and Sam break down the men's bracket. The boys both give their thoughts and their picks for each of the four first round match up's. Will Toledo continue it's great season, or will Ball State rediscover the shooting form that allowed them to knock off the Rocket's back in February? Is Bowling Green all the way back? What has happened to Akron? These are all questions to consider as the post season begins. The boys give their thoughts, as well as their predictions for how the tournament will play out. On the women's side of the fence, things are hotly contested. Only 3.5 games separated the 2nd and 8th place teams in the final standings, so there are a lot of first round match up's here that will be coin flips. Bowling Green has taken the conference by surprise this year - can they keep it up on the big stage? Central Michigan, Ohio, and Buffalo all entered the season with aspirations of a conference championship. All three of them could find themselves atop the podium come Saturday, but will any of them be able to put three consistent performances together? Only time will tell. It's been a basketball season unlike any other. Games have been moved, cancelled, and postponed. Despite all of that, here we are. It's a great time of the year to be a sports fan, and the BEST time of year to be a hoops fan. Let's enjoy it while it's here. Thanks for stopping by folks! Learn more about your ad choices. What began as the solo project of frontman Will Toledo, Car Seat Headrest initially released a series of lo-fi and experimental albums on Bandcamp. The band's name is a reference to Toledo's necessity of recording vocals in his car while still living at his parents’ home at the time. In 2015 Car Seat Headrest signed to Matador Records, and recently released Making a Door Less Open, a stylistically divergent record containing elements of Hip Hop, EDM and even Doo Wop. I caught up with Will to chat about self-producing and a tour-less summer. Enjoy!
Car Seat Headrest mastermind Will Toledo calls in to Kyle Meredith to talk about Making A Door Less Open. Together, they discuss the need to find a style and sound, working with existing samples to create something new, and customizing the vinyl, CD, and streaming editions to be their own unique listening experience. Toledo also discusses the invention of an alternate persona named Trait, how theatrics in rock music has become a lost art form, and the ways new single "Hollywood" speaks to class divide and being an outsider. In 2011, a teenage Will Toledo - under the name Car Seat Headrest - released Twin Fantasy, a self-produced, lo-fidelity, homemade album that slowly built up a cult following on Bandcamp. Last year, he re-recorded the album with support from his record label, Matador, and his full backing band. Now, they're touring behind that record and Daniel and his wife Coley were able to see the band perform at College Street Music Hall in New Haven, CT. In this special live report, Daniel explains what made him fall in love with this band over the last couple of years and Coley gives her opinion on the concert from an unbiased, fresh, perspective. Chad and Tom are joined by Mark Haber from Brazos Bookstore and author of the forthcoming Reinhardt's Garden (October 1, Coffee House Press). They talk a bit about Translation Bread Loaf (two thumbs up) and about a special poster for anyone who buys the First 100 from Open Letter, before trying their best to breakdown a nonsensical metaphor that Chad heard at this weekend's The Ladder Literary Conference. Í lestinni í dag verður meðal annars rætt við Katrínu Gunnarsdóttur, dansara og danshöfund, en hún frumsýnir í Tjarnarbíói í kvöld verk sitt Crescendo þar sem hún sækir meðal annars innblástur í vinnusöngva og erfiðisvinnu kvenna. Tónlistarkonan Jelena Ciric hefur búið hér á landi í rúmt eitt og hálft ár, hún er serbnesk að uppruna en hefur búið um víða veröld, í Kanada, Mexíkó, á Spáni og nú á Íslandi. Jelena verður gestur Lestarinnar í dag, fræðst verður nánar um list hennar og líf. Maður er nefndur Will Toledo, bandarískur og 25 ára að aldri, sem gengst við hljómsveitarnafninu Car Seat Headrest. Hann hóf feril sinn átján ára þegar hann gaf út tólf plötur á fjórum árum í sjálfsútgáfu áður en Matador-útgáfan tók hann upp á sína arma. Hann er einn af fáum sem tekst að halda sér á floti í rokkbrotsjó samtímans þar sem fátt er um fína drætti. Lestin kynnir til leiks Car Seat Headrest í ferðalagi dagsins. The past is a funny and fickle thing; even as it shrinks to the size of a speck in the rear-view mirror, its contours shift and its lessons zoom into razor-sharp focus. Will Toledo always knew he would return to Twin Fantasy. He never did complete the work. Not really. Never could square his grand ambitions against his mechanical limitations. Listen to his first attempt, recorded at nineteen on a cheap laptop, and you’ll hear what Brian Eno fondly calls “the sound of failure” -thrilling, extraordinary, and singularly compelling failure. Will’s first love, rendered in the vivid teenage viscera of stolen gin, bruised shins, and weird sex, was an event too momentous for the medium assigned to record it.

Copyright law is a fickle beast. Will Toledo and Matador Records found out just how fickle when they found out despite their good faith efforts, a (killer) track off of Teens Of Denial that quoted a classic The Cars song wouldn't pass the copyright muster, resulting in the physical release of the album being pushed back to June and all copies being destroyed. This kinda thing could be catastrophic to an artist's career, but given the circumstances, who really gives a f$%$?*That's our podcast. Plus a little Promised Land Sound for good measure. On this episode, we spoke with Will Toledo of Car Seat Headrest, whose new album Teens of Denial comes out this Friday via Matador Records. It's a fantastic record, bigger and more fully realized than before, and it reflects the transition from solo project to full band. We also spoke to author Bob Mehr about Trouble Boys, his affecting book on the Replacements. Mehr's one of the best music writers working, and his book dives deep and comes up with even more than one could expect. Onwards . . .
Will Toledo -- aka Car Seat Headrest -- was a Bandcamp legend by the time Matador Records signed him last year. He released 10 albums via the DIY platform and now, he's releasing his first LP of new material through the esteemed indie label. Will took us into the mindset of a musician making the big jump, and what it was like trying to secure the rights to use bits of Cars, Dido, and Neil Diamond songs on "Teens of Denial."
