A discussion of Filmfarsi, a film by Ehsan Khoshbakht, of a mode of filmmaking extremely popular in Iran -- urban gangster films, melodramas, musicals -- set in urban working class milieus, that evoked and challenged the country's vaunted leap in modernity. It's a cinema quickly banned after the '79 revolution, and a cult on VHS. The filmmaker shows the wide range of filmmaking, its transnational perspective, its ritual and fetishistic post -79 consumption, and well evokes why it was so powerful, why it's been banned and why it is so cherished.
Jools shares more on her award-winning blog, VéloCityGirl, which focuses on different aspects of cycling, including cycle-style, her own adventures on two wheels, and how to widen participation in cycling. Jools’ blog and social media presence have evolved from being her ‘tiny corner of the internet’ (as she still calls it) to inspiring women and young girls around the world to get on the saddle and ride. Leading publication BikeBiz lists her as one of the most influential women in the UK cycling industry. The well-respected US publication Bicycling Magazine touts her as one of the 107 Cycling Digital Superstars in the world to follow. Instagram named Jools as one of the most influential female storytellers in their #MyStoryUK campaign. Jools now finds herself talking about cycling culture, and what it’s like to be a woman in that domain on platforms as varied as BBC Newsnight, the Design Museum, BBC Radio 4, and Southbank Centre’s WOW Festival. Jools most recent book - Back In The Frame was published in May 2019. About Back In The Frame: Jools Walker re-discovered cycling aged twenty-eight after a ten-year absence from the saddle. When she started blogging about her cycle adventures under the alias Lady Vélo, a whole world was opened up to her. But it’s hard to find space in an industry not traditionally open to women – especially women of colour. Shortly after getting back on two wheels, Jools was diagnosed with depression and then, in her early thirties, hit by a mini-stroke. Yet, through all of these punctures, one constant remained: Jools’ love of cycling. In Back in the Frame Jools talks to the other female trailblazers who are disrupting the cycling narrative as well as telling the story of how she overcame her health problems, learned how to cycle her own path and even found a love of Lycra shorts along the way. Ten years ago, Jude Kelly founded WOW – the Women of the World foundation – aimed at celebrating women and girls and the challenges they face in society. The former artistic director of London’s Southbank Centre discusses this weekend’s WOW Festival in collaboration with the BBC, the first to take place online because of the pandemic. Emma Thompson reads one of her favourite poems. It's by Liz Lochhead, the former Scottish Makar, and called Photograph, Art Student, Female, Working Class. How do you set about writing a musical? In the first of a new series, Front Row follows a team of creatives led by writer Poppy Burton Morgan and composer Ben Toth, through every stage of the process of developing House Fire, a new musical about the climate crisis. With art galleries across the world closed, access to art for pleasure and education is severely limited and sorely missed, but some art organisations and games companies have developed games to help art lovers continue to engage with art at home. Gabrielle de la Puente of The White Pube, a collaboration of two art critics, joins Tom to review the Pompidou Centre’s single-player game Prisme 7 and the online multiplayer game Occupy White Walls. The Otay Mesa Detention Center has one of the highest coronavirus infection rates of immigration detention centers in the nation and ICE has been slow to release “medically vulnerable” detainees. Also, advances in digital technology has made telehealth accessible for years, but the pandemic is making health care providers see its benefits and it may become standard practice. Plus, the pandemic is putting a strain on veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder, some are seeking help virtually. And, the Navajo Nation in Arizona has been hit especially hard by COVID-19. Alcoholism among tribal members is partly to blame, local leaders said. Finally, theaters are struggling to mount productions during the pandemic quarantine but the annual La Jolla Playhouse’s Without Walls Festival actually lends itself to it.
In this special episode we speak with parents and panellists at the Women of the World Festival (WOW) at the Southbank Centre in London on Friday 6 March 2020.We capture personal stories about navigating a return to work as well as talking with the speakers from the Damned if You Do, Damned if You Don't panel. With comments and ideas on shared parental leave, cost and quality of childcare and reflections on the sessions of the day, we record a moment of motherhood at the WOW Festival.
O perfil do artista no Instagram é @pveascolagens

At the 2018 Women of the World Festival in London, Kim Chakanetsa brings together two extraordinary women who have been instrumental in the fight against racism and police brutality. In 2013, three women came together to form an active response to systemic racism in the US. They'd just learned that the man who shot dead an unarmed black teenager called Trayvon Martin had been acquitted for the killing. They said simply: Black Lives Matter. One of them was Patrisse Khan-Cullors. Patrisse grew up in Los Angeles and became an activist at an early age, having witnessed how her own family members had been treated at the hands of police. In January 2018, she published her memoir, When They Call You a Terrorist. Baroness Doreen Lawrence has campaigned for police reform ever since the murder of her son Stephen in London in 1993. He was stabbed to death at a bus stop in an unprovoked racist attack. Doreen's tireless fight for justice finally resulted in two of his killers being convicted, and in a public inquiry. This resulted in the landmark Macpherson Report, which identified institutional racism in the police service, and led to widespread police reform. Doreen Lawrence has become an important public figure in the UK and was made a life peer in the House of Lords in 2013.
