Krishnan Guru-Murthy sits down with Jude Kelly, founder of the Women of the World (WOW) Foundation, to talk about the rise of traditional values in global politics, equitable education and the arts and whether the divine really is 'a bloke'. Kelly, a theatre director and former artistic director of the Southbank centre in London, reflects on her experiences challenging entrenched patriarchal values while growing up as an Irish immigrant in England; how she feels our financial, legal and religious norms have placed men in charge of society and what to do about it; the recent resurgence of traditional values and strongman politics; and why community-driven change is the real key to creating a more just and equitable society. Lorien and the director Jude Kelly, join Emma Barnett in the Woman's Hour studio. In 2015, BAFTA-winning film-maker Leslee Udwin decided that making programmes to raise awareness about issues like rape was not enough for her. Her investigation India's Daughter - about Jyoti Singh Pandey who was raped, tortured and killed by six men on a bus in Delhi in 2012 – asked why men rape women. Leslee spoke to one of the attackers, who blamed the victim. Leslee decided to campaign for a revolution in education, not just in India, but in the UK and theoretically, every country. Her aim is to equip all children with the tools to ‘think equal,' and reduce violence against women. On this week's podcast, we're celebrating International Women's Day on the 8th March and also talking about the great P.G. Wodehouse with William Humble, who's written a new one-man play, called ‘Wodehouse in Wonderland', a one-man show, touring Britain until the end of April. It stars Robert Daws, also on the podcast, as Wodehouse. In Britain Wodehouse is feted and loved for his quintessentially English comic characters Jeeves and Wooster, but he was enormously famous in America too, where the play is set, for being a talented Broadway lyricist, contributing to 25 hit musicals, including ‘Anything Goes'. William and Robert reveal less known fascinating sides to Wodehouse's character, shedding light on his notorious Berlin broadcasts, which were manipulated by the Nazis for their propaganda and caused him great shame. We also talk to Jude Kelly about the WOW Festival (Women of the World Festival) now in its 13th year and taking place at London's Southbank between 10th and 12th March. Jude set up the Festival in 2010 to celebrate the achievements of women and girls and confront global gender injustice, and it now it takes place in 30 countries. Jude gives us the highlights of the London festival including a special screening of the play ‘Prima Facie' starring Jodie Comer, followed by a discussion, and appearances by the American writer Roxanne Gay and former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard.

Imagine a world in which we had true gender equality, a world in which women and girls could unleash all their power and come together with boys and men to create something new. Jude Kelly founded the Women of the World festival in 2010 to focus on just that – to celebrate the achievements of women and confront global gender injustice. She is also a storyteller, and prior to WoW built a decorated career as a theatre director and producer. Today she mentors, campaigns, and her work has left a huge impact on me personally. At the heart of it all – of course – is a very human story of a woman deeply connected to her creative feminine power, making her way in a world that doesn't always make that easy. Because we need a mass of women the world over say ping “if that's leadership, I'm in”. When the expedition members meet together to work on the expedition collection - books, poems, music, film, talks, essays, paintings of every sort - we will be at Bellagio, guests of the Rockerfeller foundation on the shores of lake compo in northern Italy. What a glorious place to be together, thank you Deepali Khanna for your passion for the expedition and for making this happen. In this podcast I also interview Jude Kelly who with WOW is one of the biggest jigsaw pieces, my first question is why will the success of our tiny jigsaw piece be so crucial. Paco Peña, regarded as one of the world's foremost traditional flamenco players, is coming back to Sadler's Wells Theatre in London with Solera, his new flamenco show, devised in collaboration with long-time friend and theatre director Jude Kelly. Their work aims to showcase the raw talent of young artists, tempered by the understated authority of an older, wiser generation. Solera, the title of this production, refers to the solera process of ageing liquids such as wine. Andalucía, in Southern Spain, where Paco was born, has for generations produced fine wines using a method that stacks oak barrels in several layers. Young wine enters the highest barrel and given time flows down, nurturing its best qualities, until what remains is a delicious wine that can only be achieved with age. The mature solera of the older generations enriches and refines the best qualities handed down to the young. Flamenco is not a written tradition, but one handed down from one generation to the next, constantly striving to find different ways to express; the best of performances will incorporate part of what has been created before by the great practitioners of the past.

Everyone seemed disappointed with the Glasgow climate summit. But maybe it was not as bad as it looked? That is the provocative insight of Isabel Hilton, an expert on both climate action and on one of the pivotal countries, China. Yes, it was “unhelpful,” as she put it, that India, with China's backing, changed the wording of the final communique to promise a “phase down” rather than a “phase out” of coal. But this language may have reflected the need to manage domestic politics while actually making progress. “I don't think coal is safe at all after Glasgow,” Hilton told co-host Edie Lush. More generally, Edie and co-host Claudia Romo Edelman explore a fascinating reversal. Where in the past political leaders overpromised and under delivered on climate action, Glasgow may mark a moment when what is actually happening exceeds what politicians feel able to talk about as they worry about nationalist and anti-climate forces. Not everyone, of course, shares this hopeful outlook. Edie describes conversations she had with several experts who expand on the widely held view that action on climate simply is moving too slowly to cap rising temperatures at 1.5 centigrade. The mayor of Dhaka North, Atiqul Islam, described how 1500 climate migrants were arriving in Dhaka every day as sea level rises in Bangladesh. Walter Roban, deputy premier and Home Minister of Bermuda, explained his vision to create a blue economy in the island nation and why help would be needed from the rich world.   Anne Cairns, from our sponsor Mastercard, and Jude Kelly, from the Women of the World Foundation, describe the importance of gender equity in solving the climate emergency. “Climate change is a man-made problem and needs a female solution,” Kelly says.

In 2016, Creative Review voted George Lee as one of the top 50 Creative Leaders globally, alongside Jude Kelly, Björk, and Paul Smith. She co-founded the pioneering social enterprise, The Age of No Retirement, championing a society where age doesn't define people. Before that, she was Director of the multi-award-winning design studio, This is Real Art.She is a highly respected disrupter and innovator in the age space, leading the way in showing how cross-generational innovation is central to social and economic impact. Her background and deep interest in psychology still inspire her work, but it is her belief in the power of design— making things work better for more people of all ages — that is her driver. With a design career spanning over 25 years, she has been responsible for multi-award-winning design campaigns worldwide. In 2020 she set up a specialist design research consultancy, The Common Land, to help businesses understand the outdated and economically limiting conventions of age and innovate products and services that work for all ages. She has recently joined the Design Age Institute, part of the Royal College of Art, as Community Lead bringing together healthy aging champions from all sectors to create real change and action — business, industry, academia, technology, the creative industries, government, and of course people of all ages. She is on the BSI working group looking into age-inclusive standards, the ISO working group on intergenerational workforces, and a Trustee of the Do It Foundation, a social enterprise whose technology helps people do good and feel healthier happier. For more information:https://www.thecommonland.co.ukMore about Creativity:"Creativity Without Frontiers" is now available at Unknown Origins Books and all relevant book retailers. Stay in touch:Web: https://www.unknownorigins.com/Twitter: Unknown Origins (@UnknownOrigins9) / TwitterInstagram: Unknown Origins (@unknownoriginsuo77)Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Unknown-Origins-112791887004124LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/unknown-origins/YouTube: Unknown Origins - YouTubeMusic by Iain MutchWALKERANDWILLIAMSupport the show (https://www.paypal.com/unknownorigins)

The EMEA Recruitment podcast was proud to welcome Olga Miler and Jude Kelly CBE, the Co-Founders of SmartPurse, a financial toolkit to support women in becoming confident with money.  “We want to scale SmartPurse globally, in order to inspire many more women, but also to unite many more women, in a global conversation around money, finance and economic empowerment.” Paul Toms starts the episode by asking how Olga and Jude – who come from very different backgrounds – met and discovered their shared passion. When they began having conversations with women about money, they were shocked to learn that so many women feel unconfident and embarrassed about their lack of knowledge.  With their drive and ideas, Olga and Jude made a plan and put it into action. It's been a steep learning curve for Jude, who had no prior experience of founding a commercial company, but she knew the conversation was urgent and essential. The COVID-19 pandemic – as well as issues surrounding sustainability and investments – have only made SmartPurse more relevant.  The response from both men and women has been overwhelmingly supportive. Although they've not been long-term friends, Olga and Jude instinctively liked each other. They both respect each other's talents and ideas, with Jude finding Olga impressive on a daily basis! Traditionally, women have been shut out of finance. As a result, Jude explains that it can take a while for women to understand that they should have confidence with money. As with other societal issues, such as healthcare and education, life only becomes richer once women take an equal place in the world, she believes. EMEA Recruitment works with many companies on their Diversity & Inclusion initiatives, but Paul recognises that change won't happen overnight. Jude describes how gender politics at a domestic level can cause tremendous tension in our lives, especially at work. Providing financial education on a global scale is the philosophy of SmartPurse. Olga quotes a study in which British people were asked what they wished they'd have learned about at school; five of the ten topics related to money. To overcome the knowledge and confidence gap, she feels that women need this education the most.  SmartPurse's education is practical, rather than theoretical, which has proven to be “extremely effective”. Olga discusses the method that they use to provide help to those struggling to understand or manage their money, which ultimately enables them to take action.  Olga and Jude have wider goals for the business, but they have both had exceptional careers individually. Paul digs deeper into the advice they would give to those aspiring to achieve their dreams, as well as the one piece of advice they'd give to their younger selves – Jude has a particularly fantastic answer!  You can listen to the full episode below: The EMEA Recruitment podcast is also available on your favourite podcast app, as well as via this link: To find a particular part of the episode, please use the timestamps below: 01:25: How Olga and Jude met and created SmartPurse 06:15: What it feels like to have conversations around money09:44: Why the world needs women to understand money16:57: The philosophy of SmartPurse19:42: How SmartPurse helps women manage their money22:47: What to do if someone's embarrassed about money25:05: Olga's vision for the business26:27: Advice for people aspiring to reach their goals30:08: Jude's mentor33:58: Who has inspired Olga35:26: Olga's favourite quote36:34: Jude's advice for her 18-year-old self37:19: How to reach out to Olga and Jude You can find out more about SmartPurse at smartpurse.me, or connect with Olga and Jude on LinkedIn.    We're proud to bring you this episode in partnership with our friends at Operation Smile. Caroline Bird was only fifteen when she had her first collection of poems published; she’s been writing since she was eight, hiding in the corner behind her bunk beds at home. This was in Leeds, where Caroline was brought up, the daughter of playwright Michael Birch and theatre director Jude Kelly. She’s now published six collections of poetry, along with a clutch of plays for theatre and radio. Her latest poetry sequence “The Air Year” was awarded the prestigious Forward Prize for the best collection of poetry published this last year. In conversation with Michael Berkeley, Caroline Bird talks about the impact of being published as a teenager, and about the depression that led her to drug addiction by the time she was a student. She confesses she finds classical music without words almost unbearably emotional – as a child, it made her deeply sad. Understanding that sadness and coming to terms with it, she returns now to music she heard when she was young, going as far back as the music her mother played to her in the womb. Music choices include Rachmaninov’s Sonata for Cello and Piano; Janet Baker singing Elgar’s Sea Pictures; Billie Holiday; and Lionel Bart's Oliver! For many centuries (and for many reasons) critically acclaimed creative genius has generally come from a male perspective. As theater director Jude Kelly points out in this passionately reasoned talk, that skew affects how we interpret even non-fictional women's stories and rights. She thinks there's a more useful, more inclusive way to look at the world, and she calls on artists -- women and men -- to paint, draw, write about, film and imagine a gender-equal society. Jude Kelly, the artistic director of Southbank Centre, describes how "Little Women" by Louisa May Alcott mirrored her own experiences growing up in a lively Liverpool home. Like the March family, Kelly grew up surrounded by sisters, and with a father who was often absent. She was inspired by the way Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy grew throughout the novel. "Each daughter is tested against her own frailties and foibles to see if she can become a woman of substance in her own terms ... and I wanted to be a woman of substance too," she says. And the book helped her come to terms with the loss of her baby sister Caroline of multiple sclerosis. "Maybe this is the biggest influence 'Little Women' had on me. It made me think about death as an inevitable part of our lives. Producer: Smita Patel.
