Step aside, Vin Diesel, it's Ice Cube's turn! While in many ways a worse movie than the first xXx, the sequel is a helluva lot of fun. A young Ice Cube, an evil Willem Defoe — it's another movie of its time, and we love that about the xXx movies! This is a fun episode, so join us for the ride ;) Our Music is by jacketpocket Follow us on that thing @NighUnwatchable
After getting a bit serious last week, I wanted to have some fun and thanks to HBO Max, I was able to get a big, dumb action movie. If you recall from the review I did with Brendan on the first XXX movie, I HATED it. This time Vin Diesel is gone and Ice Cube steps in, so this should be more my speed right? Of course with Cube being the star, I got some hip hop talk in, gave my quick thoughts on the new Chris Rock and Marlon Wayans stand up specials and I have a quick PSA for you. Mark and Nicole welcomed multi-hyphenates Janet Lopez and Walter Hochbrueckner to the lighter side of the dark side Janet got over her parents not allowing her to play Selena as a child to getting breaks in modeling, boxing and acting as she has starred in such disparate projects as Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Attack of the 30 foot Chola and a movie called Going to the Bathroom, which she remembered being in after this show was taped. Recently she attended a screening of 2 movies she starred in Liza-Warden from Hell (where she co-starred with Dark Mark) and Beyond the Gates of Hell. Walter acted in his youth but became a video game designer from the Apple II days in the 80s through the X Box days of the 00s. He then returned to his first love and scored acting roles in XXX-State of the Nation and Eagle Eye and now is writing and directing films such as the award winning Love Carries and The Paradise Motel winning awards along the way and building his studio Spheroid Productions. Both of these talented people have great stories about everyone from Steven Spielberg, Harrison Ford, Ice Cube, Shia Leboeuf and Jon Voight, just to name a few and their respective stars are rising fast! Mark and Mike stop a coup and watch the 2005 sequel, xXx: State of the Union. They discuss the similarities between Vin Diesel and Ice Cube, the extreme sports craze, and what else they've seen Scott Speedman in.
Having survived a serial killing mastermind (but not THE Mastermind) in ALONG CAME A SPIDER, Andrew and Dave turn their attention to Lee Tamahori's XXX: STATE OF THE UNION, the Ice Cube starring sequel to XXX. Just what do the duo make of the effort to pivot the series away from being defined by former (and eventually returning) star Vin Diesel? Just how much of the metatext of the film is intentional? And just why did it cost so damn much, any way? Tune in and find out!Next Episode: TGIF!All music by Andrew Kannegiesser. Editing by Dave Babbitt.

Listeners Choice Month rolls on with the Vin Diesel-less sequel, xXx: State of the Union starring Ice Cube. Joining the guys is extreme sports expert Jerika, who is a tad dismayed to discover the lack of extreme sports in this particular installment. There is plenty to talk about though like a debate on Ice Cube as a hyper-kinetic action hero, the wildest fiddle band of all-time, TV dinners used to simulate body heat, the World War IV references (did WW3 already happen in the world of this movie?), the haunting and relevant plot surrounding insurrectionists at the US Capitol and much more. Listeners Choice comes to a close next week with the contractually-obligated musical dud, From Justin to Kelly. This is the episode THEY didn't want YOU to hear! (They = Ben and Eric, because it was originally recorded as a practice episode months ago, not intended for wide release) But recent events have, um, changed our opinion of this movie about an insurrection on Capitol Hill during a special joint session of Congress as high ranking members of the Executive Branch plot a coup. Is this mostly dismissed 2005 Ice Cube-starring action film (a sequel to a Vin Diesel movie that Vin refused to be in!) secretly one of the most predictive political movies of the modern era? It's a new year and time for a new series on Movie Fighters! We're starting off 2016 with our long-awaited series of movies starring rappers, and we decided that a great kickoff would be the time-appropriate Ice Cube (and Xzibit) vehicle XXX: State of the Union! One of us liked this dumb, dumb movie with a overcomplicated plot more than the other. Try to guess which! You can watch along with us on Netflix, too!
Continuing Netflix November and the "Just the Sequels" train a rollin' we rejoin Samuel L. Jackson and Ice Cube as the new Triple X in a battle against a power hungry Willem Dafoe in a balls to the wall action fest that guarantees 1000% more attitude than its predecessor. Now if you think that us revealing Willem Dafoe as the bad guy is a spoiler then you are just plain wrong. Seriously folks name a film where he plays a good guy... you can't do it and #SamuelLJacksonAgreesWithMe.
