Chosen by Dave and Directed by Mike Hodges and produced by Dino De Laurentiis, Flash Gordon arrived in 1980 as a gloriously extravagant attempt to bring Alex Raymond's classic comic-strip hero back to the big screen. With a budget reported at around $20–27 million, the production went all-in on enormous studio sets, lavish costumes and deliberately colourful, old-school effects. Sam J. Jones took the title role alongside Melody Anderson, Max von Sydow, Ornella Muti, Topol, Timothy Dalton and a magnificently enthusiastic Brian Blessed.And then, of course, there's Queen. The band supplied the film's unmistakable rock soundtrack, accompanied by Howard Blake's orchestral arrangements, giving Flash Gordon one of the most recognisable scores of the era. The film performed strongly in the UK but struggled in some international markets, putting an end to plans for sequels. Zo somehow finds himself on a strange world. He doesn't know if he's on a different planet, timeline, dimension or reality, but the one thing that he knows for sure is that he's not in Kansas anymore! In this place there are remarkable sites: floating forest covered moons in the upper atmosphere, floating mountains, a hovering city. There are strange creatures, robots and a variety of people: winged people fill the skies, tree people haunt the forests, and soldiers in gold and red armor patrol the ground. The different tribes seem to bicker with each other, and Zo is saavy enough to understand that there is an over arching presence that oppresses them all. What they need is a unifying force that could band them together so that they might fight their common foe and free themselves from the tyranny that they all live under. This episode is quite literally the top of my mountain, my crown jewel moment, the summary of every podcast and every Comic Con I have attended. At the Great Lakes Comic-Con, I got to spend the entire weekend with Sam J. Jones himself, better known as Flash Gordon, Quarterback, NY Jets and Savior of the Universe. Growing up, Flash Gordon was on the same level as Star Wars to me, and I was not only star struck, but in awe of what an amazing person Sam Jones is. They always say, "Don't meet your heroes.", but in this case, I am so happy I was able to. I spent the entire weekend talking with Sam, but got to record our conversation for about 20 minutes where we talked about Hollywood, Flash Gordon, his appearance in Ted, his family, and life in general. This was bittersweet however, as the founder of Great Lakes Comic-Con, Mike DeSantis, tragically passed away a couple days before the event. I didn't get to thank him for this opportunity, but I am sure I will one day. RIP Mike. A million thank yous to my producer and co-host Randy Walker who spent hours cutting up 2hrs and 45 minutes of raw footage (because I didn't know how to work the Zoom mic).

Jones as our sincere beefcake protagonist, the wooden tour de force performance of Melody Anderson as Dale, Max von Sydow chewing the scenery as Emperor Ming the Merciless (culturally insenstive is an understatement here). All political correctness aside, Flash Gordon is still a good time. We talk about Timothy Dalton doing the most with the least amount of character of the bunch, Brian Blessed playing his performance to the back row with his army of harness clad Winged Hawk-Men. Not to mention the rocking score by Queen. This movie went onto be a huge inspiration to Seth McFarland, Taika Waititi, and Edgar Wright for it's insanly fun imagry. SAM J. JONES BIO SAM J. JONES is best known as FLASH GORDON (1980) in the Dino De Laurentis cult classic film of the same name, beating out Kurt Russell and Arnold Schwarzenegger for the role. He has over 65 films and hundreds of TV shows to his credits. He is currently co-starring in the movie AN UNLIKELY ANGEL, streaming on Pure Flix (www.pureflix.com) on August 26th with Jillian Murray (Sonny with a Chance), Aaron Mees (Christmas in the Pines) and Robert Amaya (Courageous). Sam was born in Chicago but grew up in Sacramento, CA. He played football in the Marine Corp. and afterwards started acting in films including 10 (as Bo Derek's husband) and later as Flash Gordon in TED and TED 2 (Mark Wahlberg, Seth MacFarlane). His acting resume includes HBO's 1st & Ten, The A-Team, Baywatch, Diagnosis: Murder and Walker Texas Ranger. Sam is best known as the Flash Gordon which required him to do many of his own stunts in the film. He worked alongside Timothy Dalton (who would later play James Bond).
