YOUNG OCEANS is a neo-alternative worship project that evolved from a gathering of musicians, re-imagining hymns in a New York City apartment. Untethered from the expectations of a traditional congregational format, these artful re-renderings gave birth to a sound that is at once familiar and refreshingly innovative. The musical ethos of Young Oceans emerged as more a companion to reflective prayer and meditation than to a typical church experience. In this episode, Stephen Roach talks with Young Oceans founder and songwriter, Eric Marshall about his latest project, Subjects In Motion. This full-length album features an all-star line up of artists such as Amanda Cook, Josh Garrels, Molly Pardon, Liz Vice, John Mark Pantana and many others, each singing new versions of previously released Young Ocean Songs.Patrons of the podcast can enjoy further discussions with Young Oceans on motivations in art making, radical individualism and collaboration. As Young Oceans, Eric Marshall has been crafting thoughtful, artful, often liturgical music for over a decade. That makes him an “elder statesman” (or at least a mentor and role model) to many of the young, passionate, alternative worship artists in the trenches today. But his story goes back much farther than that. Through his early, and often frustrating days as a guitarist in a rock band, to several years signed to a failed mainstream pop development deal, to years working in the New York indie rock scene, Marshall developed a musical language, and a particular set of skills, that came into perfect alignment when the vision for Young Oceans emerged. On this episode, we will hear all about Eric Marshall's challenging journey, as well as the valuable lessons, maturity, and wisdom it has given him. We'll dig deep into some of the most daunting questions facing sacred artists today. On the Jukebox, we'll listen to one of the most fascinating, experimental, genre-defying sacred music groups of the last half-century as we revisit the musical catalog of The Revolutionary Army of the Infant Jesus. Worship and the pursuit of sacred beauty is a radical endeavor that has been producing challenging art for a long time. We take a deep look at the nature and purpose of art, music, and worship, on this episode of the True Tunes Podcast. On this ground-breaking episode of the True Tunes Podcast, we explore fascinating corners of the current - and quite compelling - world of indie music being made by artists determined to use their work for spiritual purposes. Many are crafting tunes specifically for worship, while others are using their voices to shine a light on issues related to justice, theology, or life in general. Adam Lamah (Beach Chapel,) Stephen Lufkin, (aka Lovkn,) and Troy Culbreth (Cross Worship,) act as tour guides into this growing scene. We hear about their unique stories – and the emerging community of young artists blazing these trails without the support of traditional music business infrastructure. And when we roll out the True Tunes Jukebox, we let our guests load her up with records by Young Oceans, Lovelight, Taylor Armstrong, Them Parents, Antoine Bradford, Worship Mob, Paul Zach & Liz Vice, Andy Squyers, Wade Walker, John Mark Pantana, and then JJT tops it off with a classic track by The Violet Burning.   Beach Chapel came to our attention a few weeks ago when we got a message through the contact form at TrueTunes.com. Adam Lamah heard about True Tunes via an Instagram post by our previous guest, Natalie Bergman. He and his friends have been cultivating a vibrant indie community, both online and in-person, and the resulting music is often spectacular. After he attended the True Tunes Live events in both San Diego (where he shared a couple of songs) and Newport Beach, CA (where he interfaced with second-wave artists Mike Stand of The Altar Boys, Chris Brigandi of The Lifters and Wild Blue Yonder, and others,) we decided that we needed to get Adam on the show to tell us about his impressions of today's sacred indie underground.  He quickly asked if he could bring a "plus one." Stephen Lufkin, aka Lovkn, has been a lynchpin in this scene for years. We talked with both, as well as Troy Culbreth, a visionary pastor, artist, community leader and songwriter from Cincinnati who is using his indie Gospel/Worship collective Cross Worship to bring people together across all kinds of divides. Together we created a 100-song corresponding playlist as well!   Young, fresh, exciting, idealistic, creatively uninhibited, and passionate, this generation of artists - many of whom are working way under the radar of today's music industry, might be changing the way people think about art, community, and worship. One of the main jobs True Tunes had 'back in the day' was to introduce our friends to excellent new sounds. We are wearing that hat once again - and it still fits!   See the SHOW NOTES page for a complete list of all of the music used on this episode, and remember to check out the amazing work being done by VisionTrust as they come alongside local heroes around the world to lift children out of poverty and give them a bright future. In this episode, Craig has a conversation with Blake Flattley. Blake writes to bring hope in the darkness, to tell the story of the human struggle, and narrates a story where death doesn't have the last word. Blake grew up in the small mountain of Placerville, California, most well known for gold discovery or as the town with the stoplight in the middle of the highway. He was first turned onto music by a blind saxophonist who had lost the will to play, but one day took up his horn to play at the urging of others. It was that moment, hearing him play, that set Blake on a path in pursuit of the craft of creating music, performing, and songwriting. He grew up singing at church and listening to music from the Beach Boys, Bob Dylan, and Johnny Cash. He played in a variety of bands, playing saxophone, guitar, bass, or whatever other instruments he could get his hands on. In 2008 he founded the Orange Effect (We All Yell, Gravel & Gold), a harmony-driven, Americana-folk quartet. After their breakup, he began playing under the moniker Graffiti Cathedral, and later Blake Flattley. Blake has toured nationally as both a solo artist and with his bands, sharing the stage with many notable artists including Young the Giant, Sharon Van Etten, and Reign of Kindo. Blake has contributed to "The Armchair Project” and "Winter Is On My Head" (The Lone Bellow, Future of Forestry, Paul Baloche, Young Oceans, and Reign of Kindo) as both a producer and as a musician. In 2015, he released There Will Be Rest, a collection of hymns and music from his local church. The title track was a finalist for the John Lennon Songwriting Contest. This interview and the music created by Young Oceans is best expressed by Eric Marshall (lead singer and songwriter) himself as he says on the Young Oceans website:“My name is Eric. I write and sing songs for this thing called Young Oceans. The two rules of this project have always been that we won’t sing anything we don’t truly believe and we won’t make music we wouldn’t want to lay on the floor and listen to ourselves. So, you’re cordially invited into our little world. It’s a world of gut-honest prayers, of REAL communion with God and desire to tap into the conversation outside our current dimension. This is not a theology project. We’re not trying to align ourselves with any one Christians tradition. I love the sacramental traditions as well as the charismatic. All I truly know is my own way of connecting with the Lord and I just feel like I’m supposed to share that experience. I hope the lyrics and sounds speak more than I could explain here. Most of the songs are written specifically to sing in a church gathering but the fun of recording them is to stretch them out, tear them up and sew them back in some strange new way. I’m privileged to work with incredible musicians and artists on all these songs… these folks don’t get enough credit. The ‘sound’ of Young Oceans is as much theirs as its mine. Peace to you all. I hope this music can offer a bit of healing for your life. Eric Marshall 2020” Initially, a studio-only project of songwriter Eric Marshall, the band’s SELF-TITLED debut was named Top 10 album of the year for 2012 by RELEVANT Magazine and spawned the companion instrumental collection BEFORE THE BEGINNING and a follow-up EP title ADVENT. The second full-length effort, I MUST FIND YOU (2014), proved a more complete realization of the sound vision. SUDDENLY (Or The Nuclear Sunburst of The Truth Revealed) released in October 2017 and saw the band’s first-ever tour with a handful of club and universities gigs in North America in late 2017 and early 2018. Enjoying the live setting, the band recorded the wholly live film and album AMONG THE RUINS as a representation of the Young Oceans live experience. After previewing two of those tracks in Fall 2018 the band released the new SONGS OF CHRISTMAS album in November 2018 as a holiday interlude ahead of the ‘Ruins" release in Spring 2019.Young Oceans’ fourth studio album, to be released in late 2020 (YOU ARE FULLNESS PART 1 and 2) is the most intimate collection of prayer and worship songs to date. Forced into an unconventional workflow during the Covid-19 lockdown, the soundscape that emerged is more terse, more immediate, more vocal-focused and perhaps more honest than any work they’ve done to date. What Kind of Music Should We Sing in Church?Music for this episode was provided by “The Passion HiFi” https://soundcloud.com/freehiphopbeatsforyouHave you ever hear Bethel Music? Maybe you have heard the song "Reckless Love." The likelihood is real high that you have at least heard some songs from Bethel. In this episode author Richard P. Moore talks about what kind of music we should and should NOT sing. He specifically deals with Bethel Music and Bethel Church in Redding, CA that spreads problematic theology.Richard mentioned His Book "DIVERGENT THEOLOGY" You can find it on Amazon Here https://amzn.to/2JkzcbERichard also mentioned the book by Ché Ahn “Modern Day Apostles: Operating in Your Apostolic Office and Anointing” https://www.amazon.com/Modern-Day-Apostles-Operating-Apostolic-Anointing-ebook/dp/B07HTLXTF6/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=modern+day+apostles&qid=1572466883&sr=8-1Ché Ahn, is the leader of and self proclaimed Apostle of Harvest International and leader of Wagner University the school founded by C. Peter Wagner the founder of the New Apostolic Reformation. In this book, it is clear that Ahn believes in the “office" of apostle, and mentions Bill Johnson as an influential leader in the New Apostolic Reformation and even names him a “General in the movement.Richard mentioned the “New Age book wrapped in Christian Theology” called “The Physics of Heaven” he wrote a book review of it herehttp://richardpmoore.blogspot.com/2019/02/the-physics-of-heaven-book-review.htmlThe reasons we should not sing Bethel music are…If we would not commend the books of a given group, we should not sing the songs of that group. It supports directly or indirectly the ministry and global impact and growth of Bethel and its teaching I wouldn’t recommend the Mormon Bible or Mormon teaching, or Jehovah’s witnesses or the Watchtower magazine or the JW translation of the Bible. I would neither recommend Mormon music or JW music for Christian worship. The Music of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir is excellent, but I would not recommend it for Christian worship, because it is not Christian. Just like I cannot recommend the Mormon Tabernacle Choir for Christian worship because the Mormon Church stands behind it, so also I cannot recommend Bethel Music because Bethel Church and its teaching, leadership and Apostle and Prophet Bill Johnson stand behind it.There is some good and some bad, and why should we make Worship leaders decide what is theologically good and what is theologically bad? For instance “Reckless Love” is a terrible description of God’s love, but there are other seemingly good songs from Bethel. So which ones should we choose? And can we make worship leaders (Usually not theologically trained) to make those difficult decisions? We shouldn’t sing Bethel Music because it could affect its hearers to engage with the teaching and the message that Bethel is communicating to thge world, namely the teaching of the New Apostolic Reformation (“What's the will of God? On earth as it is in heaven. If it exists there, it's supposed to exists here.” -Bill Johnson-)It financially supports Bethel: royalties, record sales, creating interest where others go and buy the music, and helping with overall popularityBethel music is a branch and ministry of Bethel Church in Redding, CA. Their music is wildly popular with Christians and sung often in churches worldwide. To give you a scope of the reach of Bethel music. One of their newer songs called “Reckless Love” is apparently the #1 used song with Christian Copyright Licensing International (CCLI). If anyone wants to display the words to any Christian song or sing it publicly they must have a CCLI license number and pay for that license yearly. Royalties are then paid to each artist according to the number of uses per year. That means that “Reckless Love” is the most sung, used, copied, or lyrically displayed song in Christian music right now. Conclusion, churches sing the song “Reckless Love” worldwide more than any other song. It also means that Bethel music and Cory Asbury (the writer of the song) are easily making millions.Author of “Divergent Theology,” Richard P. Moore wrote a blog about this song, because it is deeply disturbing to characterize God as “Reckless” in any way. Below is the link to the article. http://richardpmoore.blogspot.com/2018/06/is-gods-love-reckless.htmlFurthermore, 6 of the 12 songs on this CCLI list are associated with Bethel music, worship leaders, or artists, etc. Bethel is making big money on the royalties alone from CCLI and churches that buy licenses. Does the money that churches pay into CCLI support and benable the dubious and aberrant teachings, practices, and theology of Bethel Church and its leadersArius used songs and short tunes to spread his heretical Theology about the nature of Christ- here is an article on how Arius manipulated Doxology to manipulate and change Orthodoxy. https://www.johnsanidopoulos.com/2011/06/poisonous-songs-of-arius.html Below are a sample of the songs of Arius, which have been extracted from the writings of St. Athanasius: "And so God Himself, as he really is, is inexpressible to all. He alone has no equal, no one similar ('homoios'), and no one of the same glory. We call Him unbegotten, in contrast to him who by nature is begotten. We praise Him as without beginning, in contrast to him who has a beginning. We worship Him as timeless, in contrast to him who in time has come to exist. He who is without beginning made the Son a beginning of created things. He produced him as a son for Himself, by begetting him. He [the Son] has none of the distinct characteristics of God's own being ('kat' hypostasis') For he is not equal to, nor is he of the same being ('homoousios') as Him." Also Arius wrote a small song that went something like this…“There was a time when He (Jesus) was not.”Because orthodoxy is affected by doxology and doxology is affected by orthodoxyBecause you are overlooking hundreds of other artists and the creativity of your own church creatives in saying we are going to use other music outside our churchChristian Artists that Richard recommends…Worship artists: Matt Papa, Matt Boswell, Shane and Shane, Keith and Kristyn Getty, David Crowder Band, Seeker Servant The Silver pages, Celtic Worship, Keith Green, Aaron Shust, All Sons and Daughters, The Citizens, The Digital Age, Seed Family Worship, Young Oceans, Ascend the Hill, I Am They, Kenosis, Kings Kaleidoscope, The Modern Post, My Epic, One Sonic Society, Page Cxvi, Rend Collective, Rich Mullins, Rivers and Robots, Robbie Seay Band, Ross King, Sovereign Grace Music, Jon Foremen, Ascend The Hill, Bellarive, Indelible Grace Music, Loud Harp,Hip- Hop Artists: Trip Lee, Timothy Brindle, Tedashii, Stephen the Levite, Alert 312, Beautiful Eulogy, Braille, Odd Thomas, Sho Baraka, S.O., JSON, Hazakim, Andy Mineo, KB, Lecrae

This week we fulfill a dream…the dream of all dreams. We talk to THE Father Richard Rohr! Our spiritual guide, hero, and one man quote machine took time out of his busy schedule to drop some serious knowledge on us. We discuss the two halves of life, the spiritual journey, and the Cosmic Christ. You’re really going to enjoy this one! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everyone! Fr. Richard Rohr is a globally recognized ecumenical teacher bearing witness to the universal awakening within Christian mysticism and the Perennial Tradition. He is a Franciscan priest of the New Mexico Province and founder of the Center for Action and Contemplation (CAC) in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Fr. Richard’s teaching is grounded in the Franciscan alternative orthodoxy—practices of contemplation and self-emptying, expressing itself in radical compassion, particularly for the socially marginalized. Fr. Richard is academic Dean of the Living School for Action and Contemplation. Drawing upon Christianity’s place within the Perennial Tradition, the mission of the Living School is to produce compassionate and powerfully learned individuals who will work for positive change in the world based on awareness of our common union with God and all beings. www.cac.org/richard-rohr Twitter: @RichardRohrOFM Facebook: @CenterforActionandContemplation (Selected) Guest Published Works: Immortal Diamond: The Search for Our True Self, Falling Upward: Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life, The Naked Now: Learning to See as the Mystics See, and The Divine Dance: The Trinity and Your Transformation (with Mike Morrell). What are we resisting? What's up with bricks? We discuss the controversial topic of unbelievers in the worship service, delving into 1 Corinthians 14:22-25. What does this verse mean for the gift of tongues? What does it mean for our worship gatherings? What's an apistos? We discuss the idea of the sacred assembly – a gathering of believers, of followers of one Lord united in the spirit, functioning as a Body. As with all our shows, this is part of a 2 hour live broadcast. Because of the dense nature of the topic, we are breaking this one up into 3 shorter podcasts. This episode includes the song “The Gates” by Young Oceans. It is used by permission from Chris Bradstreet of Street Talk Media. https://youngoceans.bandcamp.com/track/the-gates Stay tuned for parts 2 and 3 to continue the discussion. This show was orginally broadcast live on April 10, 2015 on KXEN 1010AM in St. Louis, MO. Sometimes the greatest worship music sounds nothing like worship music. For this special Advent episode of the ALT podcast, I flew up to New York City to hang with two musical artists who are writing some of the most interesting liturgical music I've ever heard. Eric Marshall (of Young Oceans) & David Gungor (of The Brilliance) are a part of Trinity Grace Church, a multi-parish community spread across the neighborhoods of NYC. Just like their parishes, the music they're writing for their congregations is centered around the church calendar... but it's nothing like you might expect. This will also serve as the last episode for Season One of ALT. I'm going to take a few months off while I travel, though I'll be actively recording more conversations for Season Two, which I hope to release in the first half of 2016. Thank you to all who have listened & supported this podcast this year!
