Passage: 3 “If you walk in my statutes and observe my commandments and do them, 4 then I will give you your rains in their season, and the land shall yield its increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit. 5 Your threshing shall last to the time of the grape harvest, and the grape harvest shall last to the time for sowing. And you shall eat your bread to the full and dwell in your land securely. 6 I will give peace in the land, and you shall lie down, and none shall make you afraid. And I will remove harmful beasts from the land, and the sword shall not go through your land. 7 You shall chase your enemies, and they shall fall before you by the sword. 8 Five of you shall chase a hundred, and a hundred of you shall chase ten thousand, and your enemies shall fall before you by the sword. 9 I will turn to you and make you fruitful and multiply you and will confirm my covenant with you.” (Leviticus 26:3–9) Song: Keep the Feast by Ben Shive and Skye Peterson Lyrics: Joyfully we join You at Your table Pleading not our righteousness By Your wealth of mercy we are able Now to feast in confidence Take this bread and eat Take this cup and drink Remember how He loved us Rejoice and keep the feast Who is fit to feast with such a Savior Who His sandals could untie Who are we that He would show us favor Granting us this gift of life Happy sign of friendship and reunion With the blessed Three in One Foretaste of that glorious communion Vision of the world to come Prayer: Most merciful God, who is of purer eyes than to behold iniquity, and has promised forgiveness to all who confess and forsake their sins: we come before you in a humble sense of our own unworthiness, acknowledging our manifold transgressions of your righteous laws. But, O gracious Father, who desires not the death of sinners, look upon us, we ask you, in mercy, and forgive us all our transgressions. Make us deeply aware of the great evil of them, and work in us a hearty contrition that we may obtain forgiveness at your hands, who are ever ready to receive humble and penitent sinners. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, our only Savior and Redeemer. Amen. —The Book of Common Prayer (1552)
Melanie Penn is a Nashville based songwriter at the crossroads of faith and culture. Melanie was a mainstay in the theatre scene in New York City for several years, most notably playing Sandy on the Broadway national tour of Grease! After Broadway, Melanie transitioned to songwriting and has collaborated with Nashville producer, Ben Shive, on five albums, including the Immanuel project, detailing Melanie's songwriting journey through the Christmas story. In my time with Melanie, we discuss her transition from Broadway to songwriting, and the helpfulness of attending to our emotions in decision making and discernment. She also shares about the experience of losing her dad. In that discussion, Melanie reminds us of humanity's need for rescue and the hope we celebrate this Christmas season. Also, amidst society's fear-based messages around getting older, Melanie reframes aging as an opportunity to become more alive. I can't wait for you to listen to this inspiring conversation with Melanie Penn.Melanie's song, More Alive. Buy Melissa L. From the highs of getting to work with inspiring Christian music artists of the day to the lows of burnout and career challenges, Nashville producer, arranger, and musician Ben Shive has carved out a special space in the music industry by always striving to bring the best out of the people he works with. In this episode, he shares how he has been able to spiritually invest in his fellow musicians, acknowledging the beautiful narrative God has woven through music and friendship. Quotes “In my twenties and thirties, God's love was evident to me in that I was trying to make a living in music. God was so gracious in the way that He sort of lured me into it and then provided for me every step of the way, not usually abundantly, but just the perfect provision for the daily need. It was just clear to me that I couldn't deny that God was watching over me and my family and really making up for all of my shortcomings and failures.” - Ben Shive “So much of producing is just learning how to connect with another person, listen to them, and sometimes push back, and sometimes give in. There's a lot of compromise and a lot of collaboration, so I've gotten the opportunity to get to know a lot of people on a really deep level.” - Ben Shive “Even if the music doesn't last, the effect that the music has on people, I believe, will last beyond my lifetime.” - Ben Shive Guest's Links Ben Shive's website Ben Shive's Instagram Ben Shive's Facebook Ben Shive's Twitter Resources Mentioned in This Episode Rich Mullins A Liturgy, A Legacy, & A Ragamuffin Band The Beatles Spike Jones Looney Tunes Bach Mozart Belmont University Andrew Peterson I Dream of You Volume II Keith and Kristyn Getty Eat This Book by Eugene Peterson Connect with Sally Lloyd-Jones Jesus Storybook Bible Facebook Jesus Storybook Bible Instagram Sally's website Sally's Facebook Sally's Instagram *Episode produced by Four Eyes Media*
On today's episode, Wisdom steps behind the curtain of the music business with Jess Loper, a seasoned veteran in the A&R and publishing world. From scouting talent to navigating the intricate landscape of royalties and recoupment, Jess offers a rare glimpse into the inner workings of the industry. Whether you're an aspiring artist, songwriter, or simply a music enthusiast, this episode is a must-listen for anyone curious about the business side of music. Jess Loper began her career in the newsroom serving as an Editor with Business Wire who services the Associated Press with press releases for publicly held companies. From there she took her love of words into the music industry in the A&R department at Capitol CMG/Universal Music. In this position, she was an integral part of the production process for CMG's roster of artists (Amy Grant, Chris Tomlin, Kari Jobe, TobyMac, Passion/sixstepsrecords) while also working with business affairs, union negotiations, and film & tv licensing for the label. In 2017, she joined the team at Gotee Records as VP of Brand Management (Gotee Records) and Publishing (Emack Music). Most recently, she launched Without Labels Collective, a company that focuses on music supervision and licensing for film & television (The Jesus Music Documentary, Trinity Broadcasting Networks, The Huckabee Show, Compassion International, and Thrive just to name a few). This new venture is also focused on educating and supporting songwriters & artists on the business side of the creative process. She serves on the Board of the CMPA and works closely with the GMA Dove Awards. Outside of her career in the music industry, her writing has been featured in the Huffington Post & Business Week Magazine among other digital news outlets and printed publications. Her greatest role in life has been getting to be a mom to Brody (15) & Kellen (12). Andrew Peterson is, as the old saying goes, a “man of many parts.” I first discovered Andrew's music in the late 1990s, when his song “Nothing to Say” first became a favorite – and it still is. I began following his musical career and quickly discovered that he had more on his mind that music. He was building a community of artists in Nashville that were slowly making something great. Musicians such as Ben Shive, Sandra McCracken, Jill Phillips, Andy Gullahorn, Andrew Osenga, and many others started collaborating on each other's projects. Many of them became a part of Andrew's annual “Behold The Lamb of God” tour, which has become an annual Christmas tradition for many of us. An Easter tour, called “Resurrection Letters,” just finished a 15-city run. In fact, I got to see it and hang out with Andrew here in North Carolina near the end of that tour last week. Andrew Peterson's creative energy has other outlets, too. His Wingfeather Saga books have sold more than a million copies, and it's now an animated series. The second season drops this week. He also founded a non-profit organization called The Rabbit Room, with his brother Pete Peterson, a fine writer himself. The Rabbit Room hosts events and concerts and now has a headquarters in Nashville, called Northwind Manor, which has become a gathering place and work space for writers and artists of all kinds. We talk about all of this and a lot more in this conversation I had with Andrew Peterson last week via zoom. Though we covered a lot of territory in this interview, the “breaking news” here, as we say in the world of journalism, is that Season Two of the Wingfeather Saga just dropped from Angel Studios. If you get a chance, check it out. The producer of today's program is Jeff McIntosh. Here at MinistryWatch we get technical, editorial, and database support from Christina Darnell, Kim Roberts, Rod Pitzer, Casey Sudduth, and Stephen duBarry. And in the spirit of Andrew Peterson's Resurrection Letters, let me mention that Easter is not a day, but a season, so let me wish you a happy and joyous Easter season, and – until we meet again with Natasha Cowden on Friday for our weekly news round-up…May God Bless You!

Sunday's Sermon: Aliso Creek Church Podcast (https://alisocreekchurchpodcast.fireside.fm) Passage: 4 Therefore, my brothers,[a] whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm thus in the Lord, my beloved. Exhortation, Encouragement, and Prayer 2 I entreat Euodia and I entreat Syntyche to agree in the Lord. 3 Yes, I ask you also, true companion,[b] help these women, who have labored[c] side by side with me in the gospel together with Clement and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life. 4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. 5 Let your reasonableness[d] be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; 6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9 What you have learned[e] and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you. (Philippians 3:14–21 ESV) Musical Reflection: It Is Well With My Soul (VILLE DU HAVRE) by Philip Bliss Reflection Notes: A hymn born in tragedy, “It is Well” was penned by Horatio Spafford after hearing that his daughters had all perished in a shipwreck. Through this devastation, Spafford and his wife clung to the promise of God's goodness. Spafford's immortal words were set to music by his good friend and hymn writer, Philip Bliss; Bliss titled the tune “Ville du Havre” after the ship on which Spafford's children had died. Prayer: Keep, O Lord, your household the Church in continual godliness, that through your protection it may be free from all adversities, and devoutly serve you in good works, to the glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
Find Sunday's Sermon Here (https://alisocreekchurchpodcast.fireside.fm) Passage: 12 Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually advanced the gospel, 13 so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard, and to everyone else, that my imprisonment is because I am in Christ. 14 Most of the brothers have gained confidence in the Lord from my imprisonment and dare even more to speak the word fearlessly. 15 To be sure, some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of good will. 16 These preach out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel; 17 the others proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, thinking that they will cause me trouble in my imprisonment. 18 What does it matter? Only that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is proclaimed, and in this I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice 19 because I know this will lead to my salvation through your prayers and help from the Spirit of Jesus Christ. 20 My eager expectation and hope is that I will not be ashamed about anything, but that now as always, with all courage, Christ will be highly honored in my body, whether by life or by death. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother. 16 But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses. 17 If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. 18 Truly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed[a] in heaven. 19 Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.” Musical Reflection: Prelude in C Major, BWV 846 by J.S. Bach Reflection Notes: Bach's well-known prelude spins out a series of modulations, almost imperceptible at first. The new harmonies continually unfold in a way that intrigues but never shocks. Prayer: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.

For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith— 10 that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead. 12 Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 13 Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Musical Reflection: I Need Thee Every Hour (NEED) by Robert Lowry Reflection Notes: Each stanza of this familiar hymn was written by Annie Hawks as part of a poem. When she showed the composition to her pastor, Robert Lowry, he added the refrain and set the text to music for their congregation to enjoy. The musical lines always tend upward before falling back down, an apt parallel to the textual pleas reaching up to God. Prayer: Most loving Father, whose will it is for us to give thanks for all things, to fear nothing but the loss of you, and to cast all our care on you who care for us: Preserve us from faithless fears and worldly anxieties, that no clouds of this mortal life may hide from us the light of that love which is immortal, and which you have manifested to us in your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The resurrection of Jesus is not just a good ending to a good story; as Jesus tells his disciples, it's the guarantee that the great eschatological repentance and forgiveness of sins has happened in space and time, and now God and humanity can be reconciled. If you listen to my music, there's a good chance the first song you heard was produced by Ben Shive. The music he creates is undeniably beautiful, but the WHY behind it is perhaps even more stunning. If you need to be reminded of the purpose behind what you do, this episode is for you. Ben had so many wise insights that Dave and I literally wanted to cheer at several different points in this interview. Get out a pen, because you're probably gonna want to take some notes!

Nashville-based independent singer/songwriter JJ Heller released her 10th full-length studio album, I Dream of You (Volume II). The record is a compilation of 12 favorite cover songs from the 1950's through today, and three original songs produced to stir feelings of nostalgia for listeners of all ages. Heller's effortless voice combines with moving piano accompaniment, orchestral arrangements, a children's choir, and a 10-piece string section to create a truly unforgettable collection of songs elevating the definition of children's music to an entirely new level. When Heller released the first I Dream of You album in 2014, she had no idea how significantly it would shape her career. At the time, the mother of two small girls simply intended to create soothing love songs with messages of simple devotion from a parent to a child. After listeners began sharing stories of how the songs played in integral role in their family's bedtime routines, car rides, or hospital visits, Heller began donating the album to hospitals, adoption agencies, and families of young children. The album has since been donated to over 100,000 families. — Read stories from listeners at jjheller.com/stories In 2017 after Heller told her producer, Ben Shive, how I Dream of You had became one of her most-streamed albums, he suggested making a sequel. The idea had never occurred to her, but it was quickly embraced and acted on. Soon, with the support of 1,700 fans, Heller raised $80,000 through a Kickstarter campaign which allowed her to hire over 30 musicians, producers and engineers to help her turn the record from a dream into a reality. Kickstarter backers were given a chance to hear the album early as their reward for financially supporting the campaign, and after her first listen, backer Leeann Hadgis wrote: “I can't imagine a more perfect mix is songs. I feel transported by the music and whimsy. My children are older so this is an album for me… such an excellent way to start my weekend. I will be buying this for all my friends so they can, feel the same joy I feel, when listening. I am unable to choose one favorite since they all are magical.” Miles Davis once said “… sometimes it takes you a long time to sound like yourself.” With over 15 years experience as a full-time singer/songwriter, Heller has developed an iconic style of vocal performance. Her unmistakable voice and charming delivery shines from the opening track “It's Such A Good Feeling” by the much-loved television personality Fred Rogers (Mister Rogers' Neighborhood) to the closing original track “In The Morning.” Links for JJ Heller - https://www.jjheller.com/about/ https://www.instagram.com/jjhellermusic/?hl=en Connect with us on Mommispace!
