Han ingår även i fakulteten vid The Living School på CAC - the Center for Action and Contemplation. Idag pratar vi mest om hans podcast Learning how to see, som än så länge består av 7 säsonger och fler blir det. En podcast jag varmt rekommenderar. Valerie Kaur's bok ”See no stranger” hittar ni här. Cory and the seventh story finns här . Det är alltid en fröjd att prata med Brian och jag hoppas att ni ska känna av värmen i allt han säger. This week, we're joined by Mike Petrow, who serves as the Director of Formation, Faculty Relations, and Theological Foundations at the Center for Action and Contemplation. The CAC is a nonprofit founded by Father Richard Rohr that introduces seekers to the contemplative Christian path of transformation.Mike is intimately involved with the CAC's Living School, a core educational offering from the CAC that last year offered a course called Essentials of Engaged Contemplation that Tim and I participated in. Mike is one of the primary hosts in the conversations that make up much of the program, often conversing with people like Richard Rohr and our friend Brian McLaren. Frankly, we found the work that Mike and the rest of the CAC team did on this course to be truly life-changing, and engaging it has been one of the most uplifting and transformative spiritual experiences we've had in our lives. In addition to his work at the CAC, Mike holds degrees (including a PhD) in psychology, mythology, and religious studies. This conversation is a sample of just how deeply insightful Mike is. He invited us to see curiosity as something “implanted in our hearts by God”—not as a threat to faith, but as an invitation to let the divine meet us in unexpected ways. He challenged the idea that “community is formed around uniformity of belief” and instead argued that real connection happens when we learn to be with each other, even in our differences  — that everyone belongs even, or perhaps especially, when they fall somehow outside the norm. And he brought so much depth to the idea of the wounded healer —“if you deeply commit to your own healing,” Mike told us, “at a certain point you realize it's not just for you.”In one of the most powerful moments of this conversation, Mike describes a moment of profound loss—sitting at his mother's bedside as she passed away—and then, just hours later, holding his newborn niece for the first time. These moments of symmetry revealed a truth that is at the heart of this entire conversation: that loss, and grief, and pain carve out a space in our hearts that can eventually be filled with love, joy and connection. We hope this conversation offers the same sense of healing, hope, and clarity that it did for us. And with that, let's jump into this beautiful conversation with Mike Petrow. Thanks so much for listening, and we want to send a huge thanks to Mike for coming on. For those of you who might have been wondering more about the Living School, the Essentials of Engaged Contemplation that Aubrey and I participated in, the course is not currently open for enrollment, but if you're interested in learning more or getting updates, you can head to cac.org.And if Faith Matters content is resonating with you and you get a chance, we'd love for you to leave us a rating or review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify. We love reading reviews and they definitely help get the word about about Faith Matters. Thanks again for listening, and as always, you can check out more at faithmatters.org.

When the world gets chaotic and uncertain, we need spiritual practice more than ever—not just to sustain our souls and restore our inner peace, but to recharge and prepare ourselves to take on challenges with effective action. A few years ago, Philip Goldberg, the author of “Spiritual Practice in Crazy Times” and host of the Spirit Matters podcast. interviewed twelve spiritual leaders to help us get through the pandemic. We're now re-releasing the interviews as an encore series, because the messages are as relevant today as when they first aired.   James Finley is a clinical psychologist and a spiritual director, who, early in life, was a cloistered monk in a Trappist monastery and a novice under the tutelage of the renowned ystic and author Thomas Merton. After leaving the monastery, Dr. Finley became a clinical psychologist, a popular leader of retreats and workshops, and a recognized authority on contemplative Christianity and mysticism. He is currently a faculty member at the Center for Action and Contemplation and a core teacher with The Living School, both organizations founded by Father Richard Rohr. Dr. Finley is also the author of several books and audio sets, including Merton's Palace of Nowhere; The Contemplative Heart; Christian Meditation: Experiencing the Presence of God; and his latest, The Healing Path: A Memoir and an Invitation. When a young man gets bored during the sermon in a starched Presbyterian Church on a Sunday morning, he pages through the Hymnal. That was Scott barely twelve years old who found, of all things, a Swastika at the top of the page at the end of the book he found in the church pew. The Swastika was crossed out. A cross appeared beneath it, indicating a clear Christian protest against the symbol that has lived in infamy ever since. The heading spelled out the historic Barmen Declaration of 1934. It was written then by German Clergy (led by theologian Karl Barth) who protested the State Church's endorsement and embrace of Nazi ideology. It was a potent and risky rejection of the “Furher's” influence in the Church. Years later, 2018, now Dr. McClelland, a student of The Living School (founded by Fr. Richard Rohr) sat in a discussion group with his fellow students as they considered the political turmoil two years into the Trump Presidency. He brought a copy of the Barmen Declaration to the group. Together they determined that this document to be surprisingly relevant. They all agreed, it must be updated and reintroduced to all Americans. From a broad spectrum of faith traditions, it's a call to all of us who share a commitment to contemplative action for “love and compassion, healing of division, promotion, and protection of human dignity, and the stewardship of creation.” The new version is called BARMEN TODAY: A CONTEMPORARY CONTEMPLATIVE DECLARATION. Father Richard Rohr gave his hearty endorsement, calling it a summary of the Living School's reason for being. While some 18,000 signed the original declaration in the 1930s, over 31,000 have signed Barmen Today. Ken and Scott unpack the history and application of the declaration - and prepare to encourage many more to sign.READ AND SIGN the BARMAN TODAY document by clicking here.Become a Patron | Ken's Substack PageSupport the Show.

Preaching for Good Friday, Leslye Colvin offers a reflection on resisting systems of power and oppression: "History teaches that those who speak from the margins are targeted to suffer cruelties, and, quite often, to suffer death. Jesus was a man with a target on his back. He was born and lived on the margins of a powerful and oppressive system that placed no value on his life. He resisted the dehumanization of this system by recognizing each person as being made in the image and likeness of his beloved Abba, and he acted accordingly. For him, this was God's law written on his heart, and his life testified to this truth." Leslye Colvin is a writer, spiritual companion, retreat facilitator, and contemplative activist. Inspired by the tradition of Catholic social teaching, she is passionate about encouraging diversity of thought especially as it relates to those often marginalized within the community. Currently in the apprenticeship program of the Guild for Spiritual Guidance, Leslye is a graduate of the Living School and the Haden Institute. She holds an M.A. in Communication from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and an undergraduate degree from Xavier University of Louisiana. She, her architect, and contractor completed the pleasing structures just a few years ago, a place of retreat and renewal she calls "La Molina." Kristina shares her journey - from her undergraduate years at Stanford University to her focus on social work, therapy, Enneagram, and eight visits to India. More recently, she discovered the writings of Fr. Richard Rohr. Kristina has served on the Boards of Directors at both the San Francisco and Santa Fe Operas. She is a lover of art - sculptures, paintings, and water features adorn La Molina at every turn. For more than a decade, her passion has been her horses. She is Chairman of the Board of a non-profit called A Chance of a Lifetime where she works closely with the organization's founders. They are authentic "horse-whisperers." The website says this: "Our environment fosters interaction and companionship with the herd where we build respect, trust, patience, empowerment, awareness, acceptance and vulnerability as we nurture a deeper experience of the horse–human relationship." On the web you'll find a lot of talk about spirituality, yet so few rise above body-consciousness and get to experience that Sacred Inner Space for themselves. Reliable information is quite rare. There's so much discussion about "gnostics", "mystics", "sages of philosophy", "masters of the east", or "ancient scriptures" but almost nothing is ever said about the spiritual practices of these gnostics and mystics of the ages. Only with a Living Mystic Path, a Living School of Spirituality is one close to the Inner Circle of Masters and Students where this sort of Divine Path can be made knowable to the genuine spiritual seeker by way of Initiation into the Mysteries. Erin, alongside CAC staff Mike and Paul, explore the complexities of the first half of life and the wisdom unveiled during the transition to the second half of life. Together, they reflect on how to embrace the "messy middle", found in-between the first and second half of life, how to forgive the past and engage in spiritual practices along the path of spiritual transformation. Today's episode is all about the wisdom of the Enneagram, which is a system of transformation that classifies human personality into nine basic types. I've been fascinated, maybe even low-key obsessed, with this self-evaluation tool for about a decade. Even though it isn't central to the work I do with clients, I use it to support myself in my self-observation practice. My guest is the ideal person to help us understand this interpersonal tool that she uses in her work. Join us to learn more!Holly Krepps is a former client of mine and the founder of Circle Yoga Shala. She is an internationally accredited yoga therapist and a facilitator of the West Wisdom Enneagram. She is an alumnus of Father Richard Rohr's three-year Living School, a non-dual-based wisdom school in conjunction with his Center for Contemplation and Action in Albuquerque, New Mexico.Holly has facilitated Enneagram groups seeking an authentic relationship with self and others for the past 16 years. In her own words, “I lead a full and content life resulting from fearless, sensitive living and radical acceptance of what is. If a way of ‘being' has culminated or been reinforced by my engagement with Yoga, the Enneagram, and other perennial teachings, it is that of surrender. Surrender to the Divine and to what is happening in each moment and maintaining a felt connection to Self is the opposite of getting lost in mechanical action as the basis for joy and peace in the midst of this beautiful play of MA(ya).” Holly previously joined the show for Episode 55, Saying Yes to Reality. Show Highlights:Holly's explanation of the Enneagram as “much more than a personality tool”Why the Enneagram is a mysterious wisdom and ancient teaching about how the cosmos worksHow figuring out Holly's Enneagram number has helped her understand her stress reactions and her “survival operating system”Why all of us can be multi-dimensional with more than one number on the Enneagram because of the natural movement in our livesHow self-observation helps us “see through” our fixations and reclaim our power around themHow knowing her Enneagram number has helped Holly with business successWhat Holly recommends for those just starting with the wisdom of the EnneagramAn overview of Holly's course, programs, and offeringsResources and Links:Connect with Holly KreppsWebsite Circle Yoga ShalaBooks Mentioned in this episodeFrom Fixation to Freedom by Eli Jaxon-BearThe Wisdom of the Enneagram by Don Richard Riso and Russ HudsonHelen Palmer's booksSign the 2K for Change Pledge, committing as a spirit-led entrepreneur to giving $2000 to causes in 2024 in both cash and/or services. For this week's episode, we're sharing one more talk with you from our Restore gathering in 2022. This was one of our absolute favorite sessions, and it was the final presentation, right at the end on Saturday afternoon. We were privileged to hear from Brian McLaren, who shared his simple and incredibly resonant framework for faith development. It's one that we've referenced before on this podcast, and we think you'll love hearing Brian teach it. Brian does a beautiful job emphasizing that the point isn't to get everyone to a particular “stage” of faith — rather, it's creating a Church and a community where each stage is welcome and included.First, you'll hear Brian give his presentation, and afterward, Tim and Aubrey sit down for a live Q&A with him. We think Brian brought really key insights to both parts of this session. When we listened back, there was so much there that we hadn't fully absorbed, and even if you were with us at Restore last year, we think this one's really worth a listen. For those of you who haven't heard Brian from before, he's a bestselling author, speaker, and public theologian. A former college English teacher and pastor, he is a passionate advocate for a Christianity that is just, generous, and works with people of all faiths for the common good. He is a core faculty member of  The Living School and podcaster with Learning How to See, which are part of the Center for Action and Contemplation. His newest books are  Faith After Doubt, released in 2021, and Do I Stay Christian?,  which was released in 2022.

In this episode, I'm talking about unmasking the inner critic with my guest Andrew Lang. Andrew is a lifelong educator and a gentle, light-hearted facilitator of meaningful inner work. So, you'll hear about how to recognize your limiting narratives and transform them – in a kind, embodied, and even playful way. Andrew Lang is the author of a book called Unmasking the Inner Critic: Lessons for Living an Unconstricted Life. He offers an expansive definition of the inner critic, and how it includes everything from negative self-talk to emotional and physical constrictions that ultimately limit us and make us feel less whole. Elements of Unmasking the Inner Critic That We'll Cover: How your negative mental voice relates to internal “protector parts” that want to keep you safe Where these unhelpful narratives and emotional patterns come from Inviting your inner critic into a “listening room,” rather than taking an aggressive approach (like “destroying the negative voice,” or “battling your demons”) Common illusions associated with the inner critic, like “I am not good enough,” “I am not important,” “I am not lovable,” “I am alone,” or “I am my trauma” How dis-illusionment can be a beautiful process, despite the challenges we face when letting go of familiar beliefs.  Andrew also positions this deep internal work within the context of our lives in society, and we talk about how unwinding our individual confusion can contribute to changing harmful constructs like racism, meritocracy, patriarchy, and heteronormativity. You'll hear about a few key moments that brought Andrew to this work, and how it's unfolded through different phases of his life. This is a really rich episode, and despite the seriousness of the topic, we had a lot of fun recording it! I hope you'll enjoy listening to this conversation and come away with some ideas you can put into practice. (And bonus: you'll get some solid Pacific Northwest coffee recommendations at the end…) -- Guest Bio: Andrew Lang is an educator in the Pacific Northwest, an alumnus of Richard Rohr's Living School for Action and Contemplation, and author of Unmasking the Inner Critic: Lessons for Living an Unconstricted Life. Over the years, much of the work that we've done at Faith Matters has tried to take into account much of the wisdom and research that's been done in the field of faith and adult development. It's also been important to us to share and discuss some of the existing models, including Brian McLaren's four-stage framework, and the “creation, fall, atonement” framework that our amazing friend Jared Halverson has spoken about at Restore and on this podcast. All that said, we've never done a deep dive into the model that deserves as much or more credit than any other for helping people think along these lines in the first place, and that's James Fowler's Stages of Faith. Fowler published a book by that title in 1981 that laid a real foundation for understanding faith development systematically. So we're delighted that in this episode, we finally got a chance to talk about Fowler's work specifically and in a Latter-day Saint context, and to do that, we brought on our good friend Jana Spangler. And to be super clear upfront, and this comes out in the episode — it would be a misuse of any stages model to paint a given stage as “better” or “worse,” than others — what matters is not so much the stage we're in, but how we approach the world around us as we see through the lens of that stage. As Jana says, each stage has its gifts and shortcomings. What these frameworks can do is help give each of us the humility to recognize that there is another way to see things, and to give ourselves enough grace to accept the stage we're in and confidently live through it thoroughly, and without fear.Jana Spangler is a Certified Integral Professional Coach at Symmetry Solutions, and member of the International Coaching Federation. She is an alumnus of The Living School where she studied contemplative spiritual traditions and the work of transformation under the direction of Fr. Richard Rohr. Jana's professional and personal experience combined with her training makes her an expert in the field of faith transitions. She is a sought-after podcast guest, speaker, presenter, and retreat leader.

Ken welcomes Kristina Flanagan, retired psychotherapist, MSW, Vedic astrologer and soon-to-be graduate of Richard Rohr's Living School. At Kristina's invitation (after Ken invited himself!), Ken and Carolyn spent a few days in a beautiful casita on her property, a lovely expanse of New Mexico's rolling hills and meadows just south of Santa Fe. They are authentic "horse-whisperers." The website says this: "Our environment fosters interaction and companionship with the herd where we build respect, trust, patience, empowerment, awareness, acceptance and vulnerability as we nurture a deeper experience of the horse–human relationship." Kristina relays her rich experience of building and living at La Molina. Ken is now a witness of how this extraordinary place transforms, heals, and awakens the spirit.A Chance of a Lifetime WebsiteBecome a Patron - wwwpatreon.com/beachedwhitemaleSupport the show

In this episode of Latter-day Contemplation, Christopher and Riley were joined by Jana Johnson Spangler to pay tribute to the life and legacy of Franciscan friar, Richard Rohr.  Father Rohr, as an ecumenical teacher, speaker, and author is largely responsible for the modern resurgence in popularity of contemplative practices.  He has successfully brought together teachers from many Christian denominations into The Living School, teaching perennial truths about the universal nature of the Christ, our mutual, inborn dwelling with God the creator of all flesh, and the brotherhood of man.  His message of inner and relational peace has drawn a following of millions.

In this episode, we were honored to bring back our friend Brian McLaren to talk about his brand new book, Do I Stay Christian? In this new book, Brian addresses a real question which underlies a startling sociological truth: people are leaving Christianity at a rapid pace. In fact, Pew Research shows that today, about 64% people in the US identify as Christian, after falling rapidly from a high of 90% just a few decades back.Brian's book takes an unflinching look at the reasons people might leave Christianity, before spending a lot of time on why someone might choose to stay, as Brian has. But you won't find any “apologetics” here — rather, Brian looks at staying as part of a broader faith journey — one that can take us out of a simple world of black-and-white into a new “stage” of our faith: one filled with paradox, mystery, and love. In one of the most compelling and memorable parts of the book, Brian asks “What if you're really trying to change stages, not religions?”While truly not prescribing any particular path for readers, Brian shows how all people of good will — including those with doubts, questions, and criticisms — can do so much to benefit their institutions and traditions if they choose to stay. We think this book does so much good work to paint compelling reasons for doing so, and to help illustrate a path forward.Brian McLaren an author, speaker, activist, and public theologian. At some point in your deconstruction journey, you are probably going to be faced with the question, "Do I stay Christian or do I walk away from this movement altogether?" If that is where you are today, this episode is for you. It's been a minute since Western Christianity has looked anything like Jesus. For the last 1,700 years Christianity has been known more its violence, patriarchy, domination, nationalism, and racism, instead of love and compassion. Christianity jumped the religious tracks a millennia ago. American Christianity is experiencing a rebirth in Christian nationalism, a movement seeking to force its will on the world. It's so bad that many of us no longer even want to be associated with the term Christian. So what's next? Is this movement even worth saving and if so, how do we do it? In this critical episode, Brian McLaren helps us discern the reasons why you should stay Christian as well as a myriad of reasons why you should not stay Christian. But even more important, he ponders what Christianity might look like in the future if those of us in the deconstruction community decide to participate in the recreation and resurrection of a more mystical, ancient form of faith. If you are seriously considering throwing in the spiritual towel, join us for this timely conversation. I think you'll find that Brian offers a way forward through the difficulty and dissonance many of us feel as we navigate this critical question along our faith-seeking journey. BioBrian D. In our busy, frenetic world, it's easy to slip into a mode of living that looks and feels a lot like autopilot. We go through the motions, move through our calendars, and rinse and repeat each day. In so many ways the life we long for and the life we're designed for remains out of our grasp. So, for so many people, we try to shake things up. We sign up for a sprint triathlon. We announce to our friends we're launching a podcast. We start planning a vacation or a bathroom remodel. For a time, it works. We feel more present, alive, and focused. But then the autopilot mode returns. What does it look like to find an alternative reality? To lean into a different way of thinking, and a new way of living? I can't think of anyone who can help us find that way better than Father Richard Rohr. Father Richard Rohr is a Franciscan friar and ecumenical teacher who bears witness to the deep wisdom of Christian mysticism and traditions of action and contemplation.?He is the founder of the?Center for Action and Contemplation (CAC)?and academic Dean of the Living School in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he has lived since 1986. For over fifty years, Father Richard's personal experience of God's infinite and transforming love has inspired his lifelong work of helping to remove the barriers that keep people from knowing God's love for themselves. He teaches how God's grace guides us to our birthright as beings made of Divine Love. He is the author of numerous books, including? The Universal Christ, The Wisdom Pattern, Everything Belongs, and?Falling Upward. READ: Universal Christ, by Richard Rohr Resource page: http://universalchrist.org Book URL: https://store.cac.org/collections/all/products/the-universal-christ Description: In his decades as a globally recognized teacher, Richard Rohr has helped millions realize what is at stake in matters of faith and spirituality. Yet Rohr has never written on the most perennially talked about topic in Christianity: Jesus. Most know who Jesus was, but who was Christ? Is the word simply Jesus's last name? Too often, Rohr writes, our understandings have been limited by culture, religious debate, and the human tendency to put ourselves at the center. Drawing on scripture, history, and spiritual practice, Rohr articulates a transformative view of Jesus Christ as a portrait of God's constant, unfolding work in the world. “God loves things by becoming them,” he writes, and Jesus's life was meant to declare that humanity has never been separate from God—except by its own negative choice. When we recover this fundamental truth, faith becomes less about proving Jesus was God, and more about learning to recognize the Creator's presence all around us, and in everyone we meet. Thought-provoking, practical, and full of deep hope and vision, The Universal Christ is a landmark book from one of our most beloved spiritual writers, and an invitation to contemplate how God liberates and loves all that is.
