Pierson's Flower Shop and Greenhouse in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, expects customers to dial back on purchases because of higher prices forced by tariffs. “We ship a lot from Europe, we ship a lot from down south, South America,” shop owner Al Pierson told KCRG, a local television station. “Everything's being affected.” It's not like mass rose production can be brought to the U.S. Nearly 80 percent of cut flowers sold here must be imported....Article Link

We braved wind storms, dust storms, and the Texas sun, and had the BEST time ever. We started our trip in Big Bend National Park where we celebrated Andrew's 40th birthday and his engagement to his cohost. Love was in the air! Big Bend is always amazing and life changing and this year did not disappoint. Listen to Part 1 on Fort Worth Roots for more on this.  Moving on from Big Bend we hit up the BB Ranch State Park and made our way up the most beautiful highway in Texas, Hwy 170 (also known as River Road), before hitting up Presidio and making our way to Marfa. Listen to Part 2 about our interaction with the Marfa Lights on the Jerry Jonestown Massacre Podcast. Again... life changing.  This episode is a recap of our trip along with some added fun of Dustin and Susie hitting up two more national parks and two more state parks before spending the night in Cloudcroft, NM, in a haunted hotel called The Lodge.  Hope you have fun listening to this episode!  Love you, Mean it!!  XoXo

Leonard Koren on Life as an Aesthetic Experience

Time Sensitive Podcast

For as long as he can remember, Leonard Koren has been searching for beauty and pleasure. Throughout his career, the author and artist—he prefers the term “creator”—has spent considerable time putting to paper expressions and conceptual views that architects, artists, designers, and others have long struggled to find the proper framing of or words for. In 1976, when he launched the counterculture publication WET: The Magazine of Gourmet Bathing, he ushered in the idea of “gourmet bathing,” which has maintained a potent cultural niche in the nearly 50 years since. With Wabi-Sabi for Artists, Designers, Poets & Philosophers, published in 1994, Koren introduced the Japanese expression for “beautiful, imperfect, and impermanent” to the West, where it quickly took on a life of its own. Perhaps one of Koren's greatest talents is his rare ability to translate philosophical meditations on seemingly esoteric subjects into accessible, approachable texts about ways of being, seeing, thinking, making, and feeling. On the episode, Koren details his best—and worst—baths, and explains why he views his life as one long aesthetic experience.Special thanks to our Season 11 presenting sponsor, L'École, School of Jewelry Arts.Show notes:Leonard Koren[4:01] “Undesigning the Bath”[7:30] Century Tower[7:30] 7132 Hotel (Therme Vals)[9:26] “WET: The Magazine of Gourmet Bathing”[9:26] Max Palevsky[9:26] Craig Elwood[13:32] “From ‘WET' to ‘Wabi-Sabi': Leonard Koren's Adventurous Aesthetic Journey”[13:32] Mick Jagger[13:32] Richard Gere[13:32] Debbie Harry[17:09] Charlie Haas[18:25] “The Slow Lane”[18:25] Pilar Viladas[21:49] “How to Take a Japanese Bath”[21:49] “Wabi-Sabi for Artists, Designers, Poets & Philosophers”[21:49] “Wabi-Sabi: Further Thoughts”[28:23] Okakura Kakuzō's “The Book of Tea”[31:38] Glenn Adamson[31:38] Sen no Rikyū[39:29] “Noise Reduction: A 10-Minute Meditation for Quieting the Mind”[42:32] “The Haggler's Handbook”[44:22] “283 Useful Ideas from Japan”[46:56] “The Flower Shop”[46:56] Blumenkraft[46:56] “On Creating Things Aesthetic”[46:56] “Which “Aesthetics” Do You Mean?”

How Retail Florists Can Sell More Local Flowers

Attention Florists! We're back with another episode on how to sell local flowers, this time with a closer look at building a retail customer base who understands what local is and helps you tell the story of the stems.  Unlike events, retail is all about building a relationship that lasts for life.  A handful of dedicated customers evangelizing about how awesome your business are what you need.  Not droves of social media followers.  Guest Ellen Frost, owner of Local Color Flowers in Baltimore, has a YouTube channel and a valuable weekly education email.  Check them out! This podcast is brought to you by the Philadelphia Floral Guild, where we're building community around sustainable local flowers.  If you're a florist in the Philadelphia area, we'd love to have you shop with us!  Click here to learn how.  Sign up for PFG's newsletter to get regular updates about what's in season.   Not a Philadelphia area florist? Look for flower farms near you on the Rooted Farmers website or through localflowers.org.  Why use local flowers?  In addition to give your shop or studio a unique value proposition that will galvanize and inspire your customer base, local stems mean:  Less Shrink: Without the stress of a long ride in the global supply chain, our stems are superior in quality with much less breakage and far better hydration. Less Labor: Our growers do all the work of a studio assistant, stripping stems and making fresh cuts on stems that go directly into water and never leave a water source. This means you do not have to process anything! Less Trash: There are no boxes, packing paper, bubble wrap, box straps, plastic sleeves, and all the other usual trash that comes with a flower delivery from the traditional wholesaler. Less Carbon Burned: Imported flowers in the US typically travel 2,500 or more miles in refrigerated planes, trucks and boats to reach you.

Why wait? This week, we sat down with Dylan Capshaw, a Nickelodeon TIME Kid of the Year who transitioned from nonprofit founder to successful, teenage entrepreneur. Dylan's journey from an online store to a vibrant brick-and-mortar business is both inspiring and insightful. As the founder of Stemistry—a unique business that pairs a coffee shop and floral studio—Dylan shares his experiences of launching a business with zero work experience and managing a team significantly older than him. Let's dive in. Starting with a passion for coffee and flowers, Dylan cleverly combined these elements to create Stemistry. He began with an online store linked to a wildlife rescue and eventually scaled up to a physical location. Imagine being a 15-year-old and having your mom drop you off for job interviews with potential employees twice your age! This unique approach, while challenging, helped Dylan learn resilience and adaptability. One key takeaway from Dylan shares with us from his story is that making mistakes is part of the journey, and learning from them is crucial to growth.Managing people who are older and more experienced than you can be daunting, but Dylan navigates this with impressive ease. His strategies include leveraging local influencers, social media, and even hiring a publicist to boost his brand. In addition, the guidance and inspiration from mentors and celebrities like Mark Cuban and Sam Fox have influenced Dylan's business strategy. What's even more impressive? Dylan's ability to balance being a student with running multiple businesses. It's not just about managing time effectively; it's about maintaining a high level of dedication and focus on both his educational and business ventures. Plus, his knack for staying adaptable with his business strategies is a huge part of why he's making such an impact. Thanks for listening to another episode of Young Boss with your host Isabelle Guarino.
