How to Grow a Flower Shop from 600k to 9 Million with Michael Jacobson   Find Rocky Lalvani @ www.ProfitComesFirst.com  or email him at rocky@profitcomesfirst.com Make more, work less video: https://youtu.be/   Most business owners think their profit problem is a sales problem. It often is not. More often, the real issue is waste, weak systems, and not knowing where margin is leaking out of the business. In this episode of Profit Answer Man, Rocky Lalvani talks with Michael Jacobson about how he took a struggling flower shop and transformed it into a multi-location business by focusing on supply chain, technology, and operational discipline. This is not just a story about flowers. It is a lesson in how small business owners can increase profit, improve cash flow, and scale without chaos.   In This Episode: How Michael bought a failing flower shop and turned it around Why supply chain optimization improved both quality and margin How predictive data helped reduce waste in a perishable business Why guardrails can make creative teams better, not worse The difference between growth mode and profitability mode Why some business owners should pay key employees more than themselves Rocky's take on hidden waste and margin erosion   Key Takeaways: Waste is one of the biggest profit killers in any business. Data-driven systems help owners stop guessing and protect cash flow. Standardization and creativity can work together when guardrails are clear. Hiring stronger people is a growth strategy, not just a staffing decision. Sustainable growth requires knowing whether you are optimizing for profit or scale.   Money Lesson from Michael: Profit improves when you stop guessing. Michael explains how direct sourcing, better inventory forecasting, and tighter operational systems helped reduce waste and improve margins in a business where spoilage can destroy profitability fast. He also makes the case that the right investments in technology, talent, and systems may feel expensive upfront, but they often pay for themselves many times over when they eliminate inefficiency and protect cash flow.   Why This Conversation Matters: Too many business owners are growing revenue without building the systems needed to keep that growth profitable. Michael's story shows what happens when an owner moves beyond instinct and starts using data, guardrails, and better people to scale the business. Rocky brings it back to the real issue business owners face every day: if you do not understand where waste is hitting your margins, growth alone will not fix the problem.   About Michael Jacobson: Michael Jacobson didn't walk into a flower shop expecting anything. It was a favor, helping his uncle sell a business most people would've driven past without noticing. The kind of place with dusty corners, a poorly-lit sign, and just enough life left to survive. For Michael, standing there, looking around, it sank in.   This was how America gave flowers now. Flowers were rushed, impersonal, and often treated as just a transaction. No ritual. Just product moving through a pipeline. And yet, this was how people were trying to say "I love you." "I miss you." "I'm sorry." The most emotional gesture in human history had been flattened into a transaction. And no one seemed to notice.   It began with a refusal to accept that this was good enough for flowers. He stripped the entire system to its studs and rethought everything. Every process, every touchpoint. He built a new system from scratch.. One that cut out the noise. One that honored the hands, the farms, the designers, the clients giving and receiving. Because when people send flowers, they are trusting us with their heart. And that should never be taken lightly.   To Michael there's a permanence in flowers that goes much beyond how long they last. The blooms eventually experience their circle of life, but the feeling stays. The moment they carry becomes part of us.   Inspired by the European tradition of living with flowers daily, Michael wants to shift how Americans see them—not as a luxury, but as an essential meaning they bring to life. Flowers are love, and they are how we know that life can be beautiful. Everyone deserves to feel that.   Today, French Florist has grown from a quiet neighborhood shop into a rising national brand, expanding across the country. But to Michael, scale was never the point. The point was to protect a standard.   In a culture addicted to efficiency, French Florist is building something a little more human. Every stem is placed with intention. Every arrangement is an offering. Every delivery is a quiet rebellion against the idea that love and beauty are optional.    For Michael, it's always been about the flowers. And through them, a more loving world.   Links: www.frenchflorist.com  www.frenchfloristfranchise.com       Profit Blueprint Calculator I Profit Comes First: https://lp.profitcomesfirst.com/profitblueprintcalc-page   Watch the full episode on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@profitanswerman Sign up to be notified when the next cohort of the Profit First Experience Course is available! “To hell with them Sicilians!”It was just an off-hand comment – a remark that was usually delivered with a smirk. Dean O'Banion and his North Siders were quick to say it. They didn't care. The South Side mob, run by John Torrio and Al Capone, were tolerated – they weren't pals. They were business associates and if it wasn't for the money they made for O'Banion and his crew, they'd have nothing to do with them at all.So, “to hell with them Sicilians” became a remark that often passed between them with a laugh. Other people, though, didn't find it so funny. To a Sicilian, it was a deadly insult – a quip that would eventually mark a man for death. And that man, of course, was O'Banion himself. And as brash and confident as he was, he never saw it coming.Check out our new American Hauntings Podcast Network for even more spooky shows.Have a question or comment? On this episode of Destination on the Left, I talk with Claudia Di Gino, General Manager at the Mondrian Mexico City Condesa. Claudia tells the story of building a lifestyle brand in the hotel industry, how partnerships play an important role, and what it means to be part of the community. She shares how her hotel delivers an authentic experience that never fails to surprise and delight its guests. We also discuss what's happening for the brand in 2026 and the opportunities for growth, including the FIFA World Cup coming to Mexico City. What You Will Learn in This Episode: How Claudia's career in hospitality began with an unexpected Disney internship and led to her current role in her hometown of Mexico City Why building a lifestyle brand is central to the Mondrian's approach and how the hotel delivers an immersive experience for guests and the local community What makes collaboration and strategic partnerships essential for creating unique guest experiences How Mondrian Mexico City differentiates itself through creative amenities, like their Flower Shop concept featuring Mexican producers and local artisanal goods Delivering a personalized service and curated guest itineraries that drive brand loyalty How the upcoming FIFA World Cup presents new opportunities for growth Mondrian's commitment to showcasing local culture, history, art, and gastronomy through every aspect of the guest experience Building a Lifestyle Brand Rooted in Community Mondrian Mexico City Condesa is committed to being more than just a hotel, they see themselves as a lifestyle brand deeply tied to their local community. Mondrian's eleven hotels worldwide are strategically placed in each city's cultural and design hotspots, and the Mexico City location is no exception, nestled between the historic Condesa and Roma neighborhoods. The property itself is a protected building with rich architectural history, and every aspect of the design pays homage to local artistry and Mexican culture, including beautiful murals inspired by ancient aqueducts in each guest room. The brand is known for being disruptive, fun, and willing to think outside of classic hospitality norms. They're focused on creating immersive, surprising experiences for both visitors and locals. The community is invited to be part of the property, whether that's through artist showcases, pop-up culinary events, or simply by visiting the lobby for a locally sourced coffee or wine. Creativity and Unique Local Partnerships A recurring theme in Claudia's approach is the creative use of partnerships. One standout example is the hotel's dual-purpose flower and coffee shop, which becomes a wine bar in the evenings, serving only Mexican products. This kind of authentic, locally driven experience is a key reason why guests keep coming back and why the growing community of remote workers living in Condesa/Roma love to pop by. The hotel's carefully chosen collaborations make sharing local celebrations even more fun for guests. For Dia de los Muertos, Mondrian partnered with Xolo Café to provide their famous "pan de muerto" alongside specialty coffee, drawing hundreds of locals and visitors alike. Similarly, partnerships with Mezcal Union and high-profile pop-up events ensure every cultural touchpoint is genuine and memorable. Preparing for the FIFA World Cup Claudia and her team are gearing up for the FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by Mexico, Canada, and the United States for the first time. Mondrian has just opened a brand-new event space designed to host upscale gatherings against the background of breathtaking skyline views. The team is focusing on safety, personalized concierge service, and handpicked local experiences to ensure guests of the World Cup have a flawless, authentically Mexican visit. What if your brand wasn't just about marketing, but about rethinking every single touchpoint your customer experiences? That's the approach Michael Jacobson took when he bought his uncle's struggling flower shop. Today, French Florist has grown from the brink of closure to Los Angeles' largest flower shop, generating over $9 million in revenue and expanding nationally through franchising.  Under Michael's leadership, the brand is reshaping what it means to buy flowers, making everyday moments feel like luxury experiences. Make Operations Part of Your Brand Your brand promise is only as strong as the systems behind it. Michael shares how upgrading outdated tools and building a custom operating system didn't just cut costs. It made every step of the customer journey smoother and more consistent. The takeaway?  If you want to deliver a premium experience, start by fixing the pain points your customers feel most, even if the solution is behind the scenes. Let Values Guide Every Decision It's easy to write core values and never put them into practice. French Florist takes the opposite approach, using the acronym LOVE (Love what you do, Own your impact, Value connection, Exceed expectations) as a daily filter for hiring, franchising, and customer touchpoints.  The result is a thriving brand that feels consistent and authentic at every level.  Ask yourself: do your customers feel your values in action, or only see them on your website? Enjoy this episode with Michael Jacobson… Soundbytes 22:26 - 22:40 “I don't know how many people actually live and breathe by [their company values]. Our company really does. We integrate it very deeply into the blood and DNA of our culture. Every decision we make follows that framework. We ask ourselves, if we're making big decisions, do they hit the core values.” 33:24 - 33:39 “If you can take the average person, on the average day, who has the average work ethic, with the average intellect, and build a system that can produce above average results, then that's a franchisable business.” Quotes “Business is tough. Nobody said it was going to be easy.” “We want to actually contribute real value to the world as an entrepreneur.” “If we can make this world 1% better, that's a worthy mission.” Links mentioned in this episode: From Our Guest Website: https://www.frenchflorist.com/  Connect with Michael Jacobson on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/michaelrichardjacobson/  Connect with brandiD Find out how top leaders are increasing their authority, impact, and income online. The Story of a Brand

In this episode, I sit down with Isaac LeKach and Lillian Shalom, the creative and entrepreneurial duo behind Flower Shop Perfumes Co., a brand that's blurring the lines between scent, art, and emotion.  What struck me most about our conversation is how personal their approach to fragrance is. For them, perfume isn't just about smelling good; it's about storytelling, self-expression, and creating a deeply emotional, almost spiritual experience for the wearer. We talk about everything from product innovation to packaging inspired by sculpture, as well as what it's like to build a fragrance brand with no roadmap, just instinct and intention.   Whether it's through bold scent choices or unconventional bottle design, Flower Shop is rewriting the rules of what a fragrance brand can be—and why the industry needed a shake-up. Here are a few highlights from our conversation:   * How a chance conversation led to the birth of a fragrance line rooted in nostalgia and artistry   * Why the brand isn't chasing mass appeal—and why that's a strength   * Lillian's take on perfume as wearable sculpture and emotional trigger   * The role of risk-taking and gut decisions in building a disruptive brand   * Why authenticity and creative freedom are their North Star   Join me, Ramon Vela, as I listen to the episode and explore how Flower Shop Perfumes Co. is redefining modern fragrance—one story, one scent, one sculpture at a time. Leonard Koren on Life as an Aesthetic Experience

For as long as he can remember, Leonard Koren has been searching for beauty and pleasure. Throughout his career, the author and artist—he prefers the term “creator”—has spent considerable time putting to paper expressions and conceptual views that architects, artists, designers, and others have long struggled to find the proper framing of or words for. In 1976, when he launched the counterculture publication WET: The Magazine of Gourmet Bathing, he ushered in the idea of “gourmet bathing,” which has maintained a potent cultural niche in the nearly 50 years since. With Wabi-Sabi for Artists, Designers, Poets & Philosophers, published in 1994, Koren introduced the Japanese expression for “beautiful, imperfect, and impermanent” to the West, where it quickly took on a life of its own. Perhaps one of Koren's greatest talents is his rare ability to translate philosophical meditations on seemingly esoteric subjects into accessible, approachable texts about ways of being, seeing, thinking, making, and feeling. On the episode, Koren details his best—and worst—baths, and explains why he views his life as one long aesthetic experience.Special thanks to our Season 11 presenting sponsor, L'École, School of Jewelry Arts.Show notes:Leonard Koren[4:01] “Undesigning the Bath”[7:30] Century Tower[7:30] 7132 Hotel (Therme Vals)[9:26] “WET: The Magazine of Gourmet Bathing”[9:26] Max Palevsky[9:26] Craig Elwood[13:32] “From ‘WET' to ‘Wabi-Sabi': Leonard Koren's Adventurous Aesthetic Journey”[13:32] Mick Jagger[13:32] Richard Gere[13:32] Debbie Harry[17:09] Charlie Haas[18:25] “The Slow Lane”[18:25] Pilar Viladas[21:49] “How to Take a Japanese Bath”[21:49] “Wabi-Sabi for Artists, Designers, Poets & Philosophers”[21:49] “Wabi-Sabi: Further Thoughts”[28:23] Okakura Kakuzō's “The Book of Tea”[31:38] Glenn Adamson[31:38] Sen no Rikyū[39:29] “Noise Reduction: A 10-Minute Meditation for Quieting the Mind”[42:32] “The Haggler's Handbook”[44:22] “283 Useful Ideas from Japan”[46:56] “The Flower Shop”[46:56] Blumenkraft[46:56] “On Creating Things Aesthetic”[46:56] “Which “Aesthetics” Do You Mean?”
