Hosting young children during the holidays can create some risks around the house you might not think of. Creating a safe, functional home, especially in areas like the laundry room, kitchen, medicine cabinet, and bedrooms, is essential for the whole family. Watch this episode on our YouTube channel here: https://youtu.be/VsVRA-qIWTg As an example, a survey by the American Cleaning Institute, from 2024, showed that 36% of Americans use decorative jars or containers to enhance their laundry space, a trend made popular on social media. However, putting products into clear jars or containers for aesthetic purposes is one way you may be unintentionally putting children at risk. In this mini episode, Brian Sansoni, Senior Vice President, Communications, Outreach and Membership at the American Cleaning Institute and Torine Creppy, President of Safe Kids Worldwide show us how to help parents create safe and child-friendly spaces without sacrificing aesthetics. Both highlight the importance of proper use of cleaning products and the dos and don'ts of storing them, additional items to keep an eye out for throughout the home and areas to prioritize safety. Whether you're organizing, revamping, or preparing to bring a new baby home, ACI and Safe Kids have the resources, including a new safety guide, to help get your home in tip-top safety shape without scarifying style. About American Cleaning Institute: ACI is a non-profit organization. Established in 1926, ACI is dedicated to advancing public understanding of the safety and benefits of cleaning products, and protecting the ability of its members to formulate products that best meet consumer needs. ACI serves both its members and the public by developing and sharing information about industry products with the technical community, policy makers, childcare and health professionals, educators, media and consumers. Find them at https://www.cleaninginstitute.org/ About Safe Kids Worldwide: Safe Kids Worldwide® is a nonprofit organization working to reduce unintentional injuries to children ages 0-14 and build equitable and sustainable systems that support injury prevention. Safe Kids works with strategic partners and an extensive network of more than 400 coalitions in the U.S. to reduce traffic injuries, drownings, sleep-related deaths, falls, burns, poisonings, and more. We achieve this work through a public health approach that includes research, interventions to educate and raise awareness, safety device distribution, and advocacy at the federal, state, and local levels. I'm so thrilled to introduce you to our first restaurant owners and cookbook authors ever to be on the show! Their story is so inspiring. There is no question that starting a restaurant is capital R risky, stressful, scary and overwhelming, but what if it included the arrival of a hurricane two weeks later, then a pandemic, then the ebbs and flows of any business. How can you go from two friends who had a similar and separate dream to a partnership that takes you from cooking in a studio apartment, to pop ups to being showcased on the Food Network, YES! A fully plant-based restaurant made it all the way to Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Then take this to creating products, then to writing your own cookbook. Alex Mazzucca & Cara Duerr, the chefs, co-owners, and visionaries behind Seed to Sprout, have turned their passion for plant-based cuisine into one of the most celebrated brands on the Jersey Shore. What began as weekly pop-up dinners in 2011, quickly evolved into their restaurant Seed to Sprout — a must-visit destination for food lovers nationwide. Known for their inventive, flavor-forward dishes and welcoming atmosphere, their restaurant draws in both vegans and non-vegans alike. Their success has even caught the attention of Food Network's Guy Fieri, who featured them on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, praising their food as "delicious" and calling them true "pioneers" in the plant-based culinary scene. Join us today in talking about what it was like to cook and share food for first responders and a community in need after hurricane Sandy, just two weeks after opening their doors for the first time. Alex and Cara share with great honesty about the hardships and the joys of opening your own restaurant, how sometimes you need to backtrack on an expansion to reconnect with the other things that are important to you, how you can stay true to your vision no matter what your accountant says. They talk about their incredible restaurant on the Jersey shore, Seed to Sprout, their connection to the community, their drool worthy dishes, how their customers include everything from the yoga crowd to business men to construction workers, all looking for a different food option that is both tasty and that feels so good. With Thanksgiving and the Holiday Season coming up, they were also here to talk about how to start approaching vegan Holiday cooking, they share amazing tips for amping up flavors, give us tons of basics for everything from delicious mains, to veganizing sides, wow-ing people with vegan desserts and of course, making the best stuffing and gravy that will have non-vegans reaching for seconds. I hope you love my conversation with this dynamic and friendly duo, changing the vegan scene in New Jersey, and helping so many people along the way. A little warning before we begin, if you're anything like me, susceptible to signage as Kirk from Gilmore Girls would say, you WILL get hungry. The Insomnia Project: Holiday Home Extravaganza with Special Guest Kelly GibsonSummary:
Deciding how to use a dwelling over the new year period and beyond may have tax implications down the road. In this episode of The Smart Property Investment Show, host Grace Ormsby speaks with Australian Taxation Office assistant commissioner Robert Thomson to shed some light on the tax obligations that property owners need to know about to ensure their investment strategy is sound. The holidays are a time to relax and unwind, but for property investors, figuring out how to use that time productively may lead some to consider leveraging their assets on the short-term market. According to Mr Thomson, investors should ensure they understand the difference between a holiday home and a rental property from a tax perspective when calculating the benefit of making that move. The duo also discuss how the government agency is using data matching to ensure that investors – and all Australians – are getting their returns right, and share helpful resources, such as the ATO's investor toolkit, to help out at tax time. Jeannette is joined by Paul Flaum, CEO of Bourne Leisure, to discuss his background and career in the travel, leisure, and hospitality industry. Paul shares his upbringing in a close-knit family and the valuable lessons he learned from his parents' successful business. He discusses the importance of putting the guest first and creating memorable experiences, and talks about the challenges he has faced in his career, the resilience required during difficult times, and the balance between being a leader and a family man. Additionally, he shares his personal connection to Holocaust education and the impact it has had on his purpose and values. KEY TAKEAWAYS Despite having a demanding job, Paul recognises the importance of maintaining a balance between work and family. He prioritises spending quality time with his wife and children and values his role as a husband and father. Resilience comes from doing your best and focusing on continuous improvement, rather than dwelling on disappointments or results. Paul's purpose is to make a positive impact on people's lives, both personally and professionally. He strives to create successful businesses, provide opportunities for others, and contribute to his community. Paul's upbringing and his uncle's Holocaust survival story have shaped his values and perspective on life. These experiences have instilled in him a deep sense of responsibility to educate others, combat hate, and make a difference in the world. BEST MOMENTS "The most important thing I can do is set up an organization which really believes that's the most important thing." "I think a lot of time in leadership, it's the questions you ask, which have the biggest multiplier effect, rather than anything else you do on flashy presentations and that sort of stuff." "I genuinely believe I've been really, really lucky in life. And I look at the background, what I've just described my back from a really poor background East End." "I think over the years, I think I've definitely learned that the best type of leader I can be is being the best me." This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. It's never too late to be BRAVE and BOLD and unlock your inner BRILLIANCE. There's a decent chance that while you love the feeling of the holidays in your home, you're also a little overwhelmed by it. There's the regular upkeep of one's home - the general cleaning and tidying, but there's also a lot of extra stuff around the house this time of year. And because our tendency is to be fairly extreme in our response to challenges - either try hard or give up - we stay overwhelmed. Let's create a small solution to the normal challenges of a holiday home so we can enjoy it while the holidays are here.Helpful Companion LinksCheck out my books The Lazy Genius Kitchen and The Lazy Genius WayDownload a transcript of this episode.
