in the words of the wonderful lyricist Bernie Taupin, sorry seems to be the hardest word.  Especially if I have to say it many times in one intro.  There are a number of inaccurate or potential litigation-bait statements on this week's program and I'd like to profusely apologize for several of them, but perhaps not all of them. I'M SORRY #1 :  I regret to referring to decorated astronaut Sally Ride (above)  as "a school teacher" (she was, of course, a physicist) and no, she did not perish on the ill-fated Challenger Space Shuttle.  I'd mixed her up with the late Christa McAuliffe. I'M SORRY #2 :  during the show's first mic break, I claimed Consumer Electronics were playing Hotel Vegas on January 19.  The show is in fact, JUNE 19.  If this has in any way impacted your January travel, that's really a shame (but you should really double check this stuff, especially if you're booking a trip 6 months away, who does that)I'M SORRY #3 :  I suggested that after said event, Hotel Vegas' patio, "will never be the same".  In reality, absolutely nothing will change. Hopefully we'll have some news in the next week or two about this show re : East Village Radio, but to be perfectly honest I am already having difficulty with the program director's "less talk, more rock" edict.  Less so about the rock part (i love following orders about what to play), but less talk likely means fewer opportunities to apologize at the end of the episode.  Which means MORE TYPING.

I'll admit, I had my own preconceptions. Perhaps it was a Tesla exec looking to create a "viral" moment.  Or maybe it would be someone who'd come into a windfall after excelling in their chosen field (ie. social media director for Whirr).  No such luck and I think you're gonna be floored when I reveal the ID of the car's owner, but if you can correctly name the motorist in question, you'll win 2 tickets for New Year's Eve at Hotel Vegas   (second prize is 4 tickets for New Year's Eve at Hotel Vegas)

The fiery finale might not be to everyone's taste, but trust me, it beats NYE at Hotel Vegas, no matter how it all plays out. This week's show will not feature any music by David Koresh Jr. , not because of any rights clearance issues, but rather than entire department has walked on in protest over their xmas bonuses (ie. there weren't any)

Amidst ongoing drought conditions, wildfires have been popping up all over the area, and Jacob's Well in Wimberley has stopped flowing, for only the fourth time in recorded history. Day two of the Alex Jones Sandy Hook trial ended with lawyers for the opposing sides squaring off over video evidence from Jones' InfoWars show, resulting in the jury being dismissed early. Austin's residential real estate market shows signs of a cooldown, including dropping prices and rising inventory - however, no relief is yet in sight for renters, as prices continue to rise amidst tight inventory. Speaking of tough times for renters - the Austin Animal Center credits a wave of evictions for overcrowding at its shelter, as renters are forced to give up their pets. On the Austin City Council's extensive agenda today: considering a return of the Austin Police Department's use of license plate readers, and codifying the exact parameters that make an establishment a "live music venue". The nonprofit Urban Alchemy has been contracted to run the ARCH homeless shelter in downtown Austin - their experience in the area is under some doubt. The parent company of Spectrum has found itself owing $7 billion - billion, with a "b" - in punitive damages stemming from a case in which one of its technicians murdered an elderly customer in Irving. Float Fest made its return last weekend with a stellar lineup of artists - and a litany of problems. Texas is ranked #1 in the United States for production of renewable energy. Adding insult to injury, the current historic heat wave has also resulted in the worst air quality in Central Texas in a decade. Meanwhile, ERCOT's chief is concerned about the ability of Texas' older power generators to keep up with the ongoing record demand for power this summer. Austin Public Health declares that monkeypox has achieved community spread in Austin. Meanwhile, COVID-19 risk remains at Medium level for Travis County, and hospitalizations continue tracking upward - as of yesterday at 159, up from 68 one month ago. Friends of an elderly cyclist who died in a hit-and-run crash in March are offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case. The director of Austin's Office of Civil Rights remains on paid leave following an investigation that appears to confirm employee allegations of a hostile work environment. Trash collection schedules have been moved earlier to allow workers to avoid the worst of the afternoon heat - we're now asked to have containers on the curb by 5:30am. A new poll commissioned by the Austin Monitor shows deep division in Austin over police spending and public safety, and that Austinites are dissatisfied with local government - and keen to vote in November. Lawyers for Alex Jones want to bar any mention of white supremacism or extremism from the cupcoming trial to determine how much he owes the families of Sandy Hook shooting victims whom he defamed. Meanwhile, his ex-wife Kelly Jones claims to have "insider info" which she's volunteering to the House Select Committee on the January 6 insurrection. A stretch of West Sixth Street, roughly the block east of Clark's Oyster Bar, is being eyeballed for a vertical mixed-use makeover. Our Thursday weekend live music outlook: Friday shows include Brandi Carlile and Lucius at Waterloo Park, Purity Ring at ACL Live, Billy Currington at Round Rock Amp, and the Roky Erickson Birthday and Ice Cream Social at Hotel Vegas. Saturday catch the Rebirth Brass Band at the Far Out Lounge, Atmosphere at Stubb's, Coheed and Cambria at Waterloo Amphitheater, and Kenny Wayne Shepherd at ACL Live. The first Texas city on record saying it will not enforce new abortion restrictions in Texas isn't Austin - it's Denton. Following the closure of Jacob's Well this week comes the closing of Hamilton Pool, also due to high bacteria levels in the water. Meanwhile, after months of pleading for new lifeguards, some of them have not been getting paid on time by Austin's Parks and Recreation Department. Austin's Music Commission is requesting that the City Council expedite the deployment of the Live Music Fund to an earlier date than the one currently planned, next July. Stream Realty Partners, the company heavily invested in revitalizing East 6th Street has unveiled plans for new live music venues in several spaces it controls, including the former Buffalo Billiards and Dirty Dog spaces. SXSW is planning an offshoot event in Sydney, Australia, in October of 2023 (it's spring down there at that time). Travis and Williamson counties both made U.S. News' new rundown of the 500 healthiest counties in the country - Collin County ranked highest in Texas at #50, and Williamson significantly outranked Travis, at #121 and #295, respectively. Thursday live music roundup for the weekend: Friday shows include album releases with Sir Woman album release at The Parish and Big Bill at Hotel Vegas, a TC Superstar tour kickoff show at Cheer Up Charlie's, Bigg Robb at Antone's as part of their 47th Anniversary run, and a Nancy Griffith tribute show at the Cactus Cafe. Saturday catch Antone's anniversary fun with Jimmie Vaughan, a heavy 2nd Anniversary party at Hold Out Brewing with Holy Death Trio and Eagle Claw, and Los Pendejos del Norte featuring Ed Miller of Sun Radio and Rich Brotherton of the Robert Earl Keen band at New World Deli. Sunday Fleet Foxes are at Waterloo Park's Moody Amphitheater, and the Antone's anniversary features Miss Lavelle's Birthday Bash. And Monday the 4th, Willie Nelson's 4th of July Picnic rolls into Q2 Stadium for the first time with Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit, Tyler Childers, Allison Russell, Steve Earle & the Dukes, and tons more. Austin weather: a tropical disturbance in the northwestern Gulf Of Mexico is expected to dump rain on the Texas coast, and there's hope some of that will come our way, but officially our rain chances for this week are dropping and our hopes for significantly cooler temps are fading too. Latest Uvalde developments: Governor Greg Abbott has ordered the Texas House and Senate to convene special legislative committees to address school and gun safety in the wake of last week's school shooting in Uvalde, but stopping short of calling for a full special session of the Legislature. Texas State Senator Roland Gutierrez, whose jurisdiction includes Uvalde, has accused Governor Abbott of attempting to "bamboozle" grieving locals with empty promises of legislative action. Five people remained hospitalized with injuries suffered in the shooting as of Wednesday, including a 10 year old girl who remains in serious condition. The Girl Scouts have posthumously honored shooting victim Amerie Jo Garza with its Bronze Cross, which is granted to members who display life-threatening heroism. A Wednesday night mobile home fire in north Austin has claimed the life of a young child. The City of Austin has filed a challenge with the U.S. Census Bureau, contesting the count in the most recent census in 2020 - we are the largest U.S. city so far to do so. The Austin Police Department is pushing for the reinstatement of automated license plate readers, or ALPR's - a tool that was suspended alongside budgetary modifications following the George Floyd protests in 2020. Meanwhile, five APD officers facing indictments over their use of force during those protests are suing the city, saying the “less than lethal” rounds employed during the demonstrations were defective, and that they were insufficiently trained in their use. TXDOT has begun an extensive project to remove those pesky stoplights from part of Loop 360. The criminal justice org Mano Amiga reports it has reached the necessary number of petition signatures to force a local vote on marijuana decriminalization in San Marcos. Texas French Bread announces its return, at first with sales via local farmers markets. The future of the historic building on 29th Street, largely destroyed by fire, remains uncertain. Texas Longhorns Men's Golf has won a national championship - its first NCAA title since 2012. Weekend live music features a boatload of interesting road shows: Friday includes The Mavericks at ACL Live at the Moody Theater, The Warlocks at Hotel Vegas, The Suffers and Emily Wells at the Parish, Night Drive at the Far Out Lounge, and KUTX's Rock The Park show witih Joe McDermott and Sir Woman at Mueller Lake Park. Saturday shows: Whores at the Parish, Diane Coffee at the Mohawk, and Symphony X at Empire Control Room. On Sunday, Steely Dan plays ACL Live, Lawrence and Misterwives are at Stubb's, and Lunar Vacation is at the Parish. Meanwhile, Panic! At The Disco will kick off their upcoming world tour with a show at Austin's Moody Center on September 8. And after a couple of cooler days with decent rain chances, "Mama Nature gets rude" - a string of potentially record-setting triple-digit days is on the way next week.

Google has announced a fresh investment in office space across the U.S. to the tune of 9.5 billion dollars, including new office space coming to downtown Austin. The City of Austin plans to acquire three more hotels to house people experiencing homelessness, and plans to sell city-owned property to Austinites displaced by gentrification. AISD's mental health services provider is being overwhelmed by demand, leaving some district students and families without support options. Things are booming at the airport: ABIA reports a 250% increase in passenger traffic growth year to year as of last February. Surging food prices are increasing demand on local food banks - meanwhile Meals On Wheels is returning to full service and is seeking volunteers. Austin FC's second season is overshadowed by the mysterious MLS suspension of scoring leader Cecilio Dominguez, whom the league has removed from play while it investigates what it vaguely calls "possible off-field misconduct". Have you always wanted to live in Margaritaville? You'll soon get your chance as the Jimmy Buffett theme will be central to new residential developments coming to Austin, Houston and Dallas. Austin gardening, TV and radio legend John Dromgoole is honored with John Dromgoole Day, declared this last Tuesday. Eater.com has updated its Eater 38 list, including in the spring edition Olamaie, Koriente and Bird Bird Biscuit. Weekend live music options included two night Friday-Saturday appearances with Kalu James and the Electric Joint and Heartless Bastards - Friday's lineup also features Hotel Vegas' celebration of Selena's 50th Birthday, and Saturday brings recent Oscar winner DJ Questlove and Hippo Campus to town. Austin weather: rainstorms move out and severe fire danger moves back in. Mid-80's today and tomorrow, with the return of temps in the 90's this weekend.

The Austin music community mourns Daniel Sahad, lead singer of the popular band Nane, who has died at the age of 29. Austin's EMS union and City officials are at odds over contract renegotiations - 26 medics have quit since the beginning of the year over forced overtime and low pay, especially for EMS workers early in their careers. The Austin Independent School District is set to grant pay raises to teachers and classified staff, but is also planning to cut hundreds of other jobs, including support staff for special education and libraries, while facing a record setting state recapture payment of almost 800 million dollars - the Austin American-Statesman has an explanation for that great big bill. Feral hogs, once thought to be a strictly rural problem, have begun encroaching into North Austin. Meanwhile, vampire bats have begun threatening to cross into Texas from Mexico. A downtown redevelopment that threatened to demolish several bars in the traditionally LGTBQ-friendly district on 4th Street may include plans for some of those establishments to be preserved. The nightclub space at South Congress and East Riverside, home only to interesting wall murals for several years, is soon to house a new establishment from the management of Hotel Vegas and Rainey Street's Reina. Robert Plant and Allison Krauss set a date for this fall at the new Moody Amphitheater at Waterloo Park - tickets go on sale this Friday. A survey of America's most dynamic cities, based on recent employment growth, density of startup activity, average income among other factors has found Austin #7, the only Texas city in the top 25.. And a chance of severe weather on Tuesday is followed by high fire danger on Wednesday.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Don Lifted over Zoom video! Memphis-based genre-defying multihyphenate Don Lifted unveils latest single and music video “The Rope” via Fat Possum Records. Of the release, Don Lifted shared, “The Rope represents planting a flag for me. It's written from a sense of sureness in the fact of my reality and my abilities. I view it as a rare moment of hyperconfidence and aggression while recording my album 325i. The record highlights my fortitude as an artist, and as a person who has drastically innovated and greatly contributed to the environment that I came up in.” Working in tandem as brothers, “The Rope” was directed by Martin Matthews and edited by Don Lifted (aka Lawrence Matthews). The accompanying visual perfectly complements the single's eerie nature and ethereal vulnerability. Viewers join Don Lifted on a dark journey, as he attempts to navigate his path to success amid outside forces trying to bring him down. The single follows on the heels of his album 325i released in October 2021. Recorded in 2020, the album encapsulates reckoning with movement versus stagnancy, questioning of direction, and embrace of detours. Through hauntingly atmospheric R&B beats, stinging guitar, and dexterous flow, Don Lifted bridges indie and hip-hop creating an unprecedented sound. The multi-disciplinary maverick is also set to take stage at SXSW this Thursday, March 17th. The show will take place at SXSW's Hotel Vegas stage at 7:50pm ET. Other appearances include the SXSW Aces High x Minor Figures on March 18th, The Treefort Music Fest on March 26th, and Schubas on April 16th. We want to hear from you! There is a great article in this week's Austin Chronicle about him finding his musical playgroud here in Austin: https://www.austinchronicle.com/daily/music/2019-06-10/in-austin-bushwick-bill-found-his-musical-playground/ He told the Chronicle in summer 2013. “I'm in my own hazy world, not even knowing all about music, and out here I get to meet real musicians where their feelings come through their fingertips into their instruments, and they mean it! It's not programmed or sampled or stolen.”The Geto Boys had played Emos, which turns out to be their final appearance there, in January 2013. Afterwards, Bushwick stayed behind and made Austin his new home for the next few years. He would pop up impromptu at shows. I saw him one night rapping solo with a backing band at Hotel Vegas, I posted a video on Youtube, please search for it, if you would like to see it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9hbRkeyClE He closed that night by announcing that he was buying drinks for the whole house! But rather than taking him up on the offer, my friend and I left and found him alone, exhausted, sitting on a curb in front of the bar. He became the Bill Murray of Austin, appearing everywhere! I again ran into him sitting at a picnic table, where I was able to talk with him for a bit. A couple years later, I was watching Brown Sabbath. Which is the band Brownout doing Black Sabbath covers. Imagine this with me, in the middle of NIB, Bushwick appears and breaks into THIS: his famous rap from "Mind Playing Tricks on Me". It was incredible! As for the rest of the Geto Boys, Scarface, well apparently his name is Brad Jordan, where coincidentally last Sunday, he announced that he was running for Houston City Council. And Willie D, I ran into him a few months ago at Austin at the Office Space 20th Anniversary party, I asked him about Bushwick, but he couldn't tell me much. A few weeks later it was announced that Bushwick was fighting pancreatic cancer. Let's start this tribute with the song from that film, in what is probably the best work scene / work revenge scene ever recorded: Yep, that was Bushwick on Dr. Dre's The Chronic album. And finally, those last songs were Bushwick's redemption of all of the foul language that he had spread for all of those year. He will be missed. Vulgar (guitar/vocals) made it in six months in spring 2018 with Jeff Giant (bass) and Blake “Bovver” Hill (drums), two guys who’ve been the beating about-to-burst heart of the Organism for about three albums now, including one for Third Man and one for In The Red. “I’ve been on almost every single underground garage punk label there is,” says T.V. proudly, and now he’s the fresh meat on Burger. But when you hear a Timmy Vulgar record, you will know it’s a Timmy Vulgar record and nobody else’s record, and Survival of the Fiendish is an extremely Timmy Vulgar record. Even more Vulgar! It’s as Vulgar as Vulgar gets. Sure, make connections: “Guzzle Gasoline” is like Raw Power-ed freak rock; “God of Comedy” is like Destroy All Monsters on a solo Roky nightmare trip; “Bitter Pill” is like one of those Cleveland 197X tearjerkers—Rocket From The Tombs, Dead Boys, ain’t it fun?—about losing your mind to and “Wall Of Grey” is post-apocalypse proto-punk just like Chrome and Mick Farren knew would come true. It’s been almost twenty years and Timmy Vulgar is still the king of hard-to-make (and harder to fake) rock ‘n’ freak ‘n’ roll made from black light and white heat. He’s been covered in bloodstains, killed by death, ripped from the crypt and sent back from the grave. He worked long and hard to get you this music. He went out into the dark and brought back fire. That’s what must be done to survive.

In Austin, BBQ can come in many ways. It can be classic, modern, tex mex but it's rarely available past dinner time. At Rollin Smoke BBQ in East Austin, Kyle Stallings takes his time to create great meat all day and all night. Most pit masters are used to being up early. Some cook from sundown to sun up. At Rollin Smoke their service ends right before sunrise. I had a great time talking to Kyle about current affairs, sauces and dealing with the drunk crowd at 2am. His passion for BBQ started years ago when he had his trailer on the west side of Austin. He and other vendors were forced to move from that spot where a 32 story building now resides. The move didn't stop him from cooking though. Since setting up across from Austin music venue Hotel Vegas, he's had a great time playing with his menu. Cooking fun ingredients like beef cheek and doing huge juicy beef ribs on the weekend, Kyle always keeps it interesting. His smoker is also unique. Made mostly out of necessity for the trailer, his pit is one long step from the register. His trailer is covered in graffiti art of pigs having a good time and delicious food. We had brisket, sausage, some smoked mac and cheese and even some perfect cubes of pork belly. He uses mostly post oak with a little pecan thrown in once in a while. Kyle is a true barbecue artist and I look forward to my next visit. You can find Rollin Smoke BBQ at 1501 E 6th St Austin, Texas 78702.
