In my last conversation with Prof. Justin Marceau, we talked about his personal journey – from an aspiring pilot in the Air Force Academy, to Harvard-educated lawyer defending inmates on death row. What we did not get a chance to discuss, however, was Justin's importance to the historic trial that ended with not guilty verdicts, for both me and my co-defendant Paul Darwin Picklesimer, in southern Utah. And, as I tell Justin in this podcast, he played a key role. This is not just because of his testimony at trial, which in my view changed the tenor of the case. It's because Justin gave me wise counsel – that I did not take as seriously as I should have – about the risks of doing open rescue work, against some of the most powerful corporate interests in the nation. It's because Justin has elevated the importance of criminal defense work, including a new activist defense project he is launching at the University of Denver College of Law. (As Justin says, we cannot protect animals, if we do not protect those who rescue them.) And, perhaps most important, it's because Justin has come to me – despite coming from an elite and highly-credentialed background – with a philosophy on change: Don't do what everyone else is doing. Fill the gaps. That simple message is crucial at this point in history, not just for animal rights, but for politics and society. We talk about that idea, and much more, in this conversation. Enjoy! It's still a little hard to believe. But on October 8, just a few days ago, a jury in southern Utah found me not guilty on all charges. The next few podcasts will discuss the trial, and its aftermath. But this first episode will focus on what came before: the incredible mobilization of people across the nation and world to fight with us against Smithfield, and for the right to rescue. Almira Tanner is lead organizer of the grassroots animal rights network Direct Action Everywhere (DxE). She was the one, behind the scenes, ensuring all the trains ran on time – from the disruption of an NFL game on Monday Night Football to managing the theater in St. George where supporters gathered to watch the trial. Curtis Vollmar is the grassroots lead for Compassionate Bay, a 501(c)(4) organization that has pushed some of the most groundbreaking legislation in animal rights history, including a nearly-successful effort to impose a moratorium on new factory farms. Curtis was the activist who, in July 2022, was charged with disorderly conduct for merely leafleting in Beaver County, Utah regarding the Smithfield trial. His case, and the death threats against animal rights activists, were the basis for our successful effort to move the Smithfield trial from Beaver to Washington County. Finally, Paul Darwin Picklesimer was my co-defendant in the Smithfield trial, and a lead investigator in the DxE Open Rescue Network. Among other things, Paul is also responsible for the design aesthetic of DxE. You'll hear all the work these folks did behind the scenes to make sure that the story of the Smithfield trial reached, not just the mainstream media, but became a powerful narrative in communities across the nation. How did we do it? What were the impacts? What were our mistakes? You'll hear it all on this episode – and also how you played a crucial role, too. The Multiverse Bends towards Compassion - Priya Sawhney

Priya Sawhney is an organizer, poet, and co-founder of both The Sanctuary Initiative and Direct Action Everywhere (DxE). She is also one of my best friends on earth, and the person I've entrusted with the two beings I love more than any other – my dog Oliver and my cat Joan – as I face off with Smithfield in the trial that may change my life. For that reason, she will not be joining me in Utah. Oliver's trauma has left him trusting of very few human beings. He needs her more than I do. Joan, who went blind and is probably near his end of life, requires round-the-clock care. But even as her physical presence will be missing, her spirit will be strong. And we tell the story in this conversation about another trial, in which the force of Priya's spirit arguably saved me from prison. Whether that happened or not – or whether it will happen in this case – there is a bigger point to that story. At every point in history, there are a nearly limitless number of possible futures. Every choice we make causes a split in the universe, towards futures filled with either cruelty or compassion. This is what theoretical physicists call the multiverse, and it's as weird as it sounds. The power of Priya's spirit is that it bends all of these branches towards compassion. It may very well be why I'm not sitting in a prison today, and it may save me from prison over the next few days. Because when people feel what Priya feels, what you and I feel, and what the animals feel, they are moved to act. This will likely be my last podcast before the verdict, and perhaps the last podcast (with my voice) in a long time. But remember: the podcast will continue, in Priya's voice (while sometimes reading my words), no matter what happens in Utah. And so long as you keep speaking your truth, we will prevail – and the multiverse will bend towards compassion. Amy Meyer was volunteering at an animal sanctuary near Salt Lake City, Utah when she decided, on the spur of a moment, to take a literal turn off her usual path. She had driven by a massive slaughterhouse on the way to the sanctuary many times. It always made her sad to think of the animals sent to their deaths, just a few hundred feet from the road. But one day in February 2013, she decided she would not just drive by. She would stop – and try to do something about it. And by merely stopping and pulling out her camera, from a few hundred feet away on a public street, she set off a chain reaction that trigger a nationwide legal battle for free speech and animal rights. A small horde of police cars surrounded her. She was charged with violating Utah's newly-enacted “ag gag” law. And her normal life suddenly transformed. Amy's story, in which her partner Jeremy also played a key role, shows two very important things. The first is that the state has been corrupted by industry influence. When even our most cherished civil liberties are blatantly violated at industry behest, something has gone wrong in American democracy. The second lesson, however, is that when we fight back – and work together with inclusive coalitions of activists, media, and ordinary people – we can win. This is a good one. And an important story to keep in mind as Paul and I go to trial. Because in less than one week, on Monday, Sept 26, we are going to ask you to join us in fighting back against industry influence again. Stay tuned for more. Finding Inspiration Amidst Horror - Almira Tanner

Almira Tanner is lead organizer of the grassroots animal rights network Direct Action Everywhere, which I co-founded in 2013. In that role, she's been carefully watching the rise and fall of not just the animal rights movement, but movements across a whole range of social justice issues, from climate change to workers' rights. And something has gone wrong; people seem to be losing hope. She's seen this in her own work trying to challenge factory farms in California – including an underhanded corporate campaign to kill a moratorium on factory farms before it even came to its first committee vote – but also in our broader society. Despair seems to be the feeling of the day. How do we overcome that feeling and drive progress? As I approach a trial that, in many ways, seems hopeless, I thought it was important to have this conversation with Almira, so we could answer this question together. And what we found – what you'll find – is that there's more reasons to be optimistic than you might think. For example, the moratorium on factory farms in California was killed, but the fact that the bill was even introduced, in a state that has one of the largest animal ag industries in the nation, is a minor miracle. In short, not just hope but reasons for real confidence are there. Sometimes, we just have to take a deeper look. We do that together in this conversation. I hope you enjoy it!Direct Action Everywhere (DxE) - WebsiteMusic by Dayzee Deva (cover of "Everybody Have Fun Tonight”)

We started The Green Pill Podcast in September 2020 to create a space to talk about change. Now we're going through a major change ourselves: in about one month, I head to trial to face criminal charges that could transform the rest of my life. And it's for that reason we're transforming the podcast, too. There's the obvious reason: I may not be here much longer to serve as host. Priya, Ronnie, Dean, and Chloe will step up in various ways to ensure the show continues. But there's a more fundamental reason, too. To truly create change, we need you to be a part of this. So while we're changing the name to Everybody *Wayne Hsiung* Tonight!, the two characters that are most important in the new titles are the two asterisks. You see, in code, the asterisk stands for a wildcard. And while the show will go on, following me via letters from prison if necessary, what will really sustain it is if *you* get involved. I can think of no better people to discuss this idea than the team who joined me for this first episode of the rebranded podcast. Ronnie Rose is co-founder of Direct Action Everywhere – and the first animal rights activist I met when I moved to the Bay Area in 2012. He helped us establish not just the intellectual foundation, but the values, which supercharged the grassroots animal rights movement in California and beyond. Priya Sawheny is co-founder of Direct Action Everywhere. She's been one of my most important partners in crime (figuratively, of course) over the last 10 years, and is helping launch a new org, The Sanctuary Initiative. Dean Wyrzykowski is the former President of the Berkeley Organization for Animal Advocacy and grassroots director in my 2020 campaign for Mayor of Berkeley. He's leading the operations for The Sanctuary Initiative. Finally, Chloe Leffakis, who joined us by Zoom, has been my social media lead (and sometime avatar) for the last 5 or so years. She's joining us as a founding staff member of The Sanctuary Initiative – and will continue to play a crucial mostly-behind-the-scenes role in everything we do. We talk in this podcast about what we've learned from the past 10 years, and our plans for the future. But, most importantly, we talk about how to get you more involved. No matter what happens next month, as long as we find ways to stay connected, and stay kind, we'll make progress. Atlanta, Georgia's own The Georgia Satellites released their debut and self-titled album in 1986.  Dan Baird was their primary songwriter and lead vocalist on most songs.  Guitarist Rick Richards, bassist Rick Price, and dummer Mauro Magellan complete the band.  Originally formed as Keith and the Satellites in 1980, the band saw a number of personnel changes and a name change to The Georgia Satellites soon thereafter.  They honed their craft playing at a Buckhead bar called Hedgens on Monday nights. The Georgia Satellites signed with Elektra Records in 1986 and released this debut album to significant commercial success.  The single "Keep Your Hands To Yourself" saw significant airplay on MTV, and went to number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, denied the number 1 spot by Bon Jovi's "Livin' On a Prayer."  The band featured a southern rock sound with a boogie slant, and this debut would be certified Platinum by the RIAA.The Georgia Satellites would produce two albums of original material and a third with both new and re-released tracks after this debut, but would not see the popularity return to the level of this first album.  Dan Baird left the band in 1990 and the band went on hiatus for a few years, but the remaining members would return to touring by 1993 and still perform today.Wayne brings us this classic of southern rock. Railroad SteelThis track is the third single from the album.  It did not chart on the Billboard Hot 100 but made it to number 34 on the Billboard Rock Charts.  The lyrics are about a guy who is cold, but whose heart can be melted by a particular woman.Keep Your Hands To Yourself"She said, 'Don't hand me no lines, and keep your hands to yourself!'"  This is the big hit from the album, reaching number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.  It is about a woman that will not give in to a guys pleading until they get married.  "You see, I wanted her real bad and I was about to give in.  Oh, that's when she started talking about true love, started talking about sin."Battleship ChainsThough it didn't make the top 40, this was an entry into the Billboard Hot 100 at number 86.  It also features guitarist Rick Richards on lead vocals. This song was written by Terry Anderson and recorded by his band The Woods out of North Carolina.  The Georgia Satellites heard the band and recorded their own version.Red LightThis is a deep cut, and is a song about a woman who is angry at her partner.  "Got Van Halen wailin' on the stereo  eight track.  Watch out baby that's what I said.  There's a red light, road block, bridge out ahead." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Dentist! by Steve Martin (from the motion picture “Little Shop of Horrors”)This movie based on the musical of the same name starred Rick Moranis and a psychotic plant living off human blood.  Steve Martin has a cameo as a sadistic dentist. STAFF PICKS:Ship of Fools by World PartyRob starts off our staff picks with a British group which was basically a solo project for lead man Karl Wallinger.  While his band was a one-hit wonder, Wallinger collaborated with other artists like Sinead O'Connor and Robbie Williams, and was the musical director for the films “Clueless” and “Reality Bites.”  The concept of the lyrics is that there will be a price to pay from the way you are living today.  The Way It Is by Bruce Hornsby and the RangeBruce's staff pick is a piano driven soft rock song about civil rights and not getting complacent.  It hit number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.   "That's just the way it is - ah, but don't you believe them."Everybody Have Fun Tonight by Wang ChungBrian brings us a song originally conceived as a ballad, but adapted to a faster pace and dance orientation by producer Peter Wolf.  The self-referential verb "Wang Chung" is a nonsensical but catchy phrase.(I am) Superman by R.E.M.Wayne's staff pick is actually a cover song originally recorded by a band called The Clique.  Bassist Mike Mills sings lead on this song because Michael Stipe wasn't very enthusiastic about it.  When Stipe sings backup vocals in live performances, he holds his arms up and out as if he is Superman flying. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Walter's Theme by R.E.M.We wrap up this week's podcast with an instrumental track off R.E.M's album "Dead Letter Office."

Wang Chung was a band that wasn't getting a lot of traction when they had a more traditionally Chinese name. I remember that early self-titled album Huang Chung and I have to admit I was a little put off by it, because it frankly wasn't especially cool-looking, so I didn't give it much of a chance. By the time their fourth album, Mosaic, came out, they'd switched labels a couple of times and had enlisted the help of people like David Geffen and Peter Wolf to get them on track. In fact, Wolf listened to the demo for "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" and made a suggestion that changed the tenor of the song, and turned it into the hit we all know and love (or hate, I don't know you). So after all that, what does it mean to "Wang Chung tonight"? Well, I think Nick Feldman explained it best. He said, "Wang Chung is the feeling, not the word. It represents an abstract, an escape from pragmatic, complex ideas. Wang Chung means whatever you want it to mean. Have fun with it. That's the whole idea of the line 'Everybody Wang Chung Tonight.' It can mean a tribal dance, a Viennese waltz, a party in New York, or whatever." And now you know. Click here for a transcript of this episode. Click here to become a patron of the show.

And lastly, “Guise Will Be Guise” as Angel goes to therapy and Wesley bluffs his way into Virginia.   NEXT: our very own voice of the Watcher Council, the exceedingly British Wesley “Wezzo” Mead joins me to talk about episodes 207, “Darla,” 208, “The Shroud of Rahmon,” and 209, “The Trial.”     BREAKDOWN 00:00:55  -  Intro / Guest 00:21:41  -  Main Topic 01:33:22  -  Outro / Next     MUSIC “Conversations (feat. Jack Hues Releases The Album Primitif

Arroe Collins

Jack Hues has had a career that most musicians can only dream of. He studied at the Royal College of Music, he recorded sessions for John Peel, he topped the U.S. charts, scored major Hollywood motion pictures and is now, finally, releasing his first solo album, the double LP, PRIMITIF. PRIMITIF will be released on March 20, 2020. PRIMITIF is the culmination of a career that has spanned 40 years and has seen Jack visit all four corners of the Earth, but we start our journey in Kent. Jack grew up in Gillingham in the Medway Towns about 40 miles southeast of London. He was interested in music from an early age. “My dad was a saxophone player and my grandfather was a musician too, but it was hearing ‘Please Please Me’ by The Beatles on the radio when I was about 8 years old that made me wake up and think…ahhh, so this is MY music.” Jack asked for a guitar that Christmas and while his parents agreed, they insisted he have proper lessons. Twice weekly Jack was taught classical and folk guitar and, unusually, how to read music, a skill that would serve him well many years later. “By the time I was 18, I had passed Grade 8 guitar and got a place at Goldsmiths College, London to study for a music degree. At this stage I knew very little about classical music. It was David Bowie and early ‘70s Prog that was my focus. The lines between genres were about as loose as they have ever been. Classical music didn’t seem remote, although I was turned down by 4 out of the 5 universities that I applied to, as Rock music was considered worthless by academics at that time.” Jack got his degree and won a BBC Composers Competition which enabled him to take a year at the Royal College of Music studying composition and electronic music. “Those four years immersed in classical music, particularly modern classical music, were very important and expanded my musical horizons immensely. However, when I came out of college the musical language I ‘spoke’ was rock music, albeit a highly seasoned vernacular.” Jack played in a variety of bands until he met bassist Nick Feldman through a Musicians Wanted ad in the Melody Maker. They formed a couple of bands before finally distilling their talents into Huang Chung. The band later renamed themselves Wang Chung at the suggestion of the head of their record label, David Geffen. “The name still comes up now. It was even on Saturday Night Live a couple weeks ago. I guess David was right.” Jack wrote the future hit-to-be, “Dance Hall Days”, while still teaching guitar at various schools around London. The song proved pivotal in the band’s development and established Wang Chung as an international success. They were signed direct to Geffen Records in the U.S., so Jack’s career was based in LA throughout the ‘80s. “I was fortunate to work on movie soundtracks during this time. William Friedkin (director of The French Connection and The Exorcist) commissioned us to score his movie, To Live and Die in LA, which was an incredible opportunity. We contributed songs to The Breakfast Club and Inner Space. In 1986 we had a Billboard #2 (Cashbox No. 1) hit in the U.S. with “Everybody Have Fun Tonight” whose chorus line ‘Everybody have fun tonight, Everybody Wang Chung tonight’ continues to capture the public imagination thirty years later.” 1987 saw Wang Chung on a coast to coast U.S. tour with Tina Turner and gigs all over the world, but by 1989, the times they were a’changing and the attention of the music business turned to grunge and hip hop. The band didn’t embrace either of those genres and eventually split in 1990. "Through the ‘90s I did various projects. I scored The Guardian for Bill Friedkin. I was the only composer to ever work for him twice! I recorded a solo album for Columbia in the U.S., but for various reasons the project foundered. I produced an album for Arkana and an EP for Arturo, working with Mick Glossop. I co-produced a couple of albums with Chris Hughes for The Definition of Sound and Gene and I formed Strictly Inc. with Tony Banks (of Genesis) to record his eponymous solo album.” For a change of scenery, Jack moved from London to Canterbury in 1998, only 25 miles away from where he was brought up, and with it came a new phase of his life which started to coalesce around Jazz. In the mid-nineties Jack met Sam Bailey and formed The Quartet, recording 2 albums Illuminated and Shattering with producer Chris Hughes on his Helium Label. In 2012 Wang Chung reformed and released their first new album in twenty years called Tazer Up!. Summer tours in the U.S. followed, but after a couple of years Jack stepped back from gigs to consider what he really wanted to do as he entered his seventh decade. “I released a trilogy of collaborative albums between 2013-18. My ‘jazz’ work tended to be instrumental, focusing on my guitar playing, but meeting and working with poets revived my interest in words and music. “ROTE-thru” is probably the most extreme experiment consisting of a long semi-improvised poem spoken by David Herd and Simon Smith set to music which I composed as 12 separate sections to be played in any order. “A Thesis on the Ballad” to poems by Kelvin Corcoran is more conventional, setting his words to song-based structures, but including space for improvisation.” Last, but not least, Jack recorded an arrangement of Beck’s “Nobody’s Fault But My Own” with his Quartet and members of Canterbury Prog band, Syd Arthur, plus Paul Booth on tenor sax. The recording was released in 2019 to critical acclaim. Also in 2019, in a parallel universe, Jack recorded and released an album of orchestral versions of Wang Chung songs entitled Orchesography to enthusiastic reviews. Due to a series of personal losses, Jack found himself more concentrated on music than ever. In the first 3 months of 2018 he wrote and recorded most of PRIMITIF. When asked to name the music that led him to the album, classical composers such as Schubert, Mahler and Debussy rub shoulders with Miles Davis, Robert Wyatt, Jon Hopkins, The Books and Lana Del Rey. He also wanted to design the album specifically as a 4-sided, double vinyl album, each side having a distinct character in the manner of The Beatles’ White Album or Jimi Hendrix’s Electric Ladyland. “I worked on the album through 2018-19 with another intensive period of writing and recording at the beginning of 2019. The resulting double album is my first-ever solo release and is, for me, the culmination of nearly 60 years of fascination and ultimately, obsession with Music and Recordings.” Music Videos: "A Long Time" - Jack Hues "Whitstable Beach" - Jack Hues

Producer Peter Wolf (not the J. Geils frontman) is behind some of the biggest music of the 80s, but also the most divisive. No matter how you may feel about "We Built This City" and "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" (and chances are you feel strongly) those songs were, and still are, huge. They also wouldn't be what they are without his Midas touch. In addition, Peter lent his genius to other classic songs of the era like "Who's Johnny," "Playing With the Boys," "Night Shift," and "King of Wishful Thinking." Plus, he's worked with some of rock's greatest artists like Lou Gramm, The Who, Heart, Big Country and Chicago. We discuss all of it, as well as the TV show he's currently developing. The guy is nothing if not savvy, you gotta give it up to him!

The English New Wave / dance pop band, Wang Chung, formed in 1980, and rode a wave of success in the mid-'80s, with such hits as "Dance Hall Days," "Everybody Have Fun Tonight," and "Let's Go," along with the soundtrack to William Friedkin's 1986 crime thriller To Live and Die in L.A., as well as "Fire in the Twilight" from the soundtrack to The Breakfast Club. In the decades since, the band's music has become synonymous with the '80s, and featured in dozens of films and TV shows. This Friday, May 10, Wang Chung releases Orchesography, which sees original members Jack Hues and Nick Feldman recording reimagined versions of their classic cuts with the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. Wang Chung scored some of the biggest, and most ubiquitous, hits of the 80s with seminal songs like "Dance Hall Days," "Let's Go," and, the mother of all 80s hits, "Everybody Have Fun Tonight". Though Blender magazine may have ranked that hit the 3rd worst song of all time, it's never gone away and is as well known today as it was 30 years ago. Jack and I talk about how that song came to be and how it's affected his life. We also go deep on the rest of his career, his relationship to touring, his many side projects, his upcoming solo album, and his soundtrack work for To Live and Die in L.A. and the Breakfast Club.
