An all-new episode of the Penn State Wrestling Show from Blue-White Illustrated is now live! The Nittany Lions sit one month away from starting their 2024-2025 regular season with Drexel on Nov. 17 at Rec Hall. Of course, there is plenty for host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel to cover in the leadup to that. This week's episode starts with a look at the NWCA All-Star Classic. Defending 285-pound NCAA champion Greg Kerkvliet, the No. 1 ranked wrestler at heavyweight, was set to face No. 3 Nick Feldman of Ohio State on Nov. 16 at Rec Hall. However, Iowa State announced Wednesday that its own heavyweight, No. 6 Yonger Bastida, would be facing Feldman instead. Flo Wrestling, which runs the event, quietly updated its bout sheet to reflect that the Cyclone is replacing Kerkvliet but has otherwise said nothing about the sudden change.Last year, Clay Clarson of South Dakota State was scratched from the exhibition event, sat out the first six weeks of the season due to injury, and was never right during the 2023-2024 season. Conversely, Levi Haines and Jacori Teemer also both scratched off of last year's original Classic bout sheet. But, they both wrestled all year, and Haines beat Teemer, then of Iowa and now of Arizona State, in the NCAA finals. But, they withdrew after the Journeymen Classic, not before. With all of that said, PSU posted a photo of Kerkvliet wrestling hours before this news broke. And, he has been frequently featured on the team's social media account. With no concrete news to share on Kerkvliet's status moving forward, Pickel and Carr discuss what it all might mean moving forward.

“Lived Through That” is the companion podcast to my book where I look at influential musicians of the 80s and 90s and where they are today. On this podcast, we'll delve deeper into a single pivotal moment in the lives of some of the artists I feature in that book, as well as other artists I love and admire. The stories they tell are open, honest, and inspiring. This week, we're going to do something we haven't done before and that's release two episodes in one week! Today's episode is with Nick Feldman, a founding member of the 80s new-wave band Wang Chung and later in the week, we'll have his bandmate Jack Hues on for an episode. Today, Nick tells us a bit of the story of the rise of his band and how chance meetings with key people altered the course of their history. It's time for Short Time Shots, a quick look at the day in college wrestling. Did you know 15 years ago, Kyle Klingman and I launched our very first podcast called Wrestling 411. Yup, now over 3,000 episodes later, I'm still trying to figure this out. In Blacksburg, the raucous crowd at Cassell Coliseum was silenced both early and late as the eighth-ranked Buckeyes topped the fifth-ranked Hokies 24-12. The biggest win came at the jump as Brendan McCrone majored All-American Eddie Ventresca 11-3 at 125 pounds. With Ventresca leading in the second period, McCrone countered Ventresca to his back, picking up a seven point move and went from trailing 3-2 to up 9-3. Isaac Wilcox used a third-period takedown to upend Connor Brady 6-5 in a pivotal swing bout. Ryder Rogotzke's dual meet debut at 184 pounds was a big one as the 2023 Junior Schalles Award winner scored his fifth fall of the year over Sam Fisher. Two freshmen Buckeyes - Luke Geog and Nick Feldman - would take wins over ranked opponents to close out the win for Tom Ryan's squad. The Hokies did pick up three notable ranked wins - Caleb Henson beat Dylan D'Emilio at 149, Bryce Andonian beat high school teammate Paddy Gallagher at 157 and Mekhi Lewis beat Carson Kharchla at 174. Ninth-ranked Nebraska rolled past Campbell 37-4 in Lincoln. The Huskers earned six bonus victories and saw a stellar return from Peyton Robb at 157 pounds after his freak infection that nearly cost him his leg last offseason. The Huskers two best wins came at the first two weights as Lenny Pinto edged Caleb Hopkins 6-5 at 184 and Silas Allred beat Levi Hopkins 11-6 at 197 pounds. At Gallagher-Iba Arena, Oklahoma State won nine of 10 to top visiting Bucknell 38-6. The only stumble came at 174 pounds, where Oklahoma State injury defaulted late in the first period after an apparent hamstring injury from Brayden Thompson. Daton Fix and Dustin Plott each scored falls, while Troy Spratley at 125 and Luke Surber at 197 earned techs. Three straight bonus victories for Indiana at 174, 184 and 197 helped pull the host Hoosiers past upset-minded Rider 27-15 at historic Assembly Hall on Friday. Trailing 15-10, D.J. Washington picked up a technical fall over Mike Wilson, then transfer Roman Rogotzke pinned Isaac Dean in the third period at 184 pounds, the second big fall of the night for the Rogotzke family at the weight class. Up 21-16, Gabe Sollars slammed the door on Rider with a second-period fall over Azeem Bell at 197. Rider's top win came at 149 pounds, where Quinn Kinner knocked off Graham Rooks, who's ranked in the top 10 in most, if not all, of the rankings. Ned Shuck and the Bellarmine Knights opened up with a 49-0 win over Division II Kentucky Wesleyan Friday night in Louisville. Word is they got a pretty boisterous crowd down there for Coach Shuck. Out west, Wyoming rolled past host CSU Bakersfield 40-3. The Cowboys got falls from Riley Davis at 174 pounds and Paolo Salminen at 157 pounds. In Division III, TCNJ beat Wilkes 35-11 and we'll keep with the acronym theme as Muhlenberg beat NJCU 38-7. Arizona Christian won four duals - beating Division II New Mexico Highlands 25-20, Simpson (Calif.) 40-15 and a pair of California Junior Colleges - Cerritos 46-9 and Sierra College 52-0 at the Mile High Duals in Prescott, Arizona, hosted by Embry-Riddle. Elsewhere in the NAIA, Dakota Wesleyan beat Ridgewater of the NJCAA 32-15. Good number of Junior Colleges were in action at the Mile High Duals and around the country as well. North Idaho beat Ellsworth 49-0 and Southeast, again, the one in Nebraska, 35-6. Southeast beat Ellsworth 30-19. Back in Prescott, Snow beat Cerritos 41-10, NAIA Embry-Riddle 24-22, and Sierra 53-0. On the women's side, Life picked up home wins over Hastings and Marymount at home before hosting Eagle Madness in Marietta on Saturday. Remember, these aren't all the scores, but it's a lot of them. Full Division I scoreboard can be found at CollegeWrestlingScoreboard.com and all tournament links from every division can be found at almanac.mattalkonline.com.

Wang Chung was a band that wasn't getting a lot of traction when they had a more traditionally Chinese name. I remember that early self-titled album Huang Chung and I have to admit I was a little put off by it, because it frankly wasn't especially cool-looking, so I didn't give it much of a chance. By the time their fourth album, Mosaic, came out, they'd switched labels a couple of times and had enlisted the help of people like David Geffen and Peter Wolf to get them on track. In fact, Wolf listened to the demo for "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" and made a suggestion that changed the tenor of the song, and turned it into the hit we all know and love (or hate, I don't know you). So after all that, what does it mean to "Wang Chung tonight"? Well, I think Nick Feldman explained it best. He said, "Wang Chung is the feeling, not the word. It represents an abstract, an escape from pragmatic, complex ideas. Wang Chung means whatever you want it to mean. Have fun with it. That's the whole idea of the line 'Everybody Wang Chung Tonight.' It can mean a tribal dance, a Viennese waltz, a party in New York, or whatever." And now you know. Click here for a transcript of this episode. Click here to become a patron of the show.

Jack Hues Releases The Album Primitif

Jack Hues has had a career that most musicians can only dream of. He studied at the Royal College of Music, he recorded sessions for John Peel, he topped the U.S. charts, scored major Hollywood motion pictures and is now, finally, releasing his first solo album, the double LP, PRIMITIF. PRIMITIF will be released on March 20, 2020. PRIMITIF is the culmination of a career that has spanned 40 years and has seen Jack visit all four corners of the Earth, but we start our journey in Kent. Jack grew up in Gillingham in the Medway Towns about 40 miles southeast of London. He was interested in music from an early age. “My dad was a saxophone player and my grandfather was a musician too, but it was hearing ‘Please Please Me’ by The Beatles on the radio when I was about 8 years old that made me wake up and think…ahhh, so this is MY music.” Jack asked for a guitar that Christmas and while his parents agreed, they insisted he have proper lessons. Twice weekly Jack was taught classical and folk guitar and, unusually, how to read music, a skill that would serve him well many years later. “By the time I was 18, I had passed Grade 8 guitar and got a place at Goldsmiths College, London to study for a music degree. At this stage I knew very little about classical music. It was David Bowie and early ‘70s Prog that was my focus. The lines between genres were about as loose as they have ever been. Classical music didn’t seem remote, although I was turned down by 4 out of the 5 universities that I applied to, as Rock music was considered worthless by academics at that time.” Jack got his degree and won a BBC Composers Competition which enabled him to take a year at the Royal College of Music studying composition and electronic music. “Those four years immersed in classical music, particularly modern classical music, were very important and expanded my musical horizons immensely. However, when I came out of college the musical language I ‘spoke’ was rock music, albeit a highly seasoned vernacular.” Jack played in a variety of bands until he met bassist Nick Feldman through a Musicians Wanted ad in the Melody Maker. They formed a couple of bands before finally distilling their talents into Huang Chung. The band later renamed themselves Wang Chung at the suggestion of the head of their record label, David Geffen. “The name still comes up now. It was even on Saturday Night Live a couple weeks ago. I guess David was right.” Jack wrote the future hit-to-be, “Dance Hall Days”, while still teaching guitar at various schools around London. The song proved pivotal in the band’s development and established Wang Chung as an international success. They were signed direct to Geffen Records in the U.S., so Jack’s career was based in LA throughout the ‘80s. “I was fortunate to work on movie soundtracks during this time. William Friedkin (director of The French Connection and The Exorcist) commissioned us to score his movie, To Live and Die in LA, which was an incredible opportunity. We contributed songs to The Breakfast Club and Inner Space. In 1986 we had a Billboard #2 (Cashbox No. 1) hit in the U.S. with “Everybody Have Fun Tonight” whose chorus line ‘Everybody have fun tonight, Everybody Wang Chung tonight’ continues to capture the public imagination thirty years later.” 1987 saw Wang Chung on a coast to coast U.S. tour with Tina Turner and gigs all over the world, but by 1989, the times they were a’changing and the attention of the music business turned to grunge and hip hop. The band didn’t embrace either of those genres and eventually split in 1990. "Through the ‘90s I did various projects. I scored The Guardian for Bill Friedkin. I was the only composer to ever work for him twice! I recorded a solo album for Columbia in the U.S., but for various reasons the project foundered. I produced an album for Arkana and an EP for Arturo, working with Mick Glossop. I co-produced a couple of albums with Chris Hughes for The Definition of Sound and Gene and I formed Strictly Inc. with Tony Banks (of Genesis) to record his eponymous solo album.” For a change of scenery, Jack moved from London to Canterbury in 1998, only 25 miles away from where he was brought up, and with it came a new phase of his life which started to coalesce around Jazz. In the mid-nineties Jack met Sam Bailey and formed The Quartet, recording 2 albums Illuminated and Shattering with producer Chris Hughes on his Helium Label. In 2012 Wang Chung reformed and released their first new album in twenty years called Tazer Up!. Summer tours in the U.S. followed, but after a couple of years Jack stepped back from gigs to consider what he really wanted to do as he entered his seventh decade. “I released a trilogy of collaborative albums between 2013-18. My ‘jazz’ work tended to be instrumental, focusing on my guitar playing, but meeting and working with poets revived my interest in words and music. “ROTE-thru” is probably the most extreme experiment consisting of a long semi-improvised poem spoken by David Herd and Simon Smith set to music which I composed as 12 separate sections to be played in any order. “A Thesis on the Ballad” to poems by Kelvin Corcoran is more conventional, setting his words to song-based structures, but including space for improvisation.” Last, but not least, Jack recorded an arrangement of Beck’s “Nobody’s Fault But My Own” with his Quartet and members of Canterbury Prog band, Syd Arthur, plus Paul Booth on tenor sax. The recording was released in 2019 to critical acclaim. Also in 2019, in a parallel universe, Jack recorded and released an album of orchestral versions of Wang Chung songs entitled Orchesography to enthusiastic reviews. Due to a series of personal losses, Jack found himself more concentrated on music than ever. In the first 3 months of 2018 he wrote and recorded most of PRIMITIF. When asked to name the music that led him to the album, classical composers such as Schubert, Mahler and Debussy rub shoulders with Miles Davis, Robert Wyatt, Jon Hopkins, The Books and Lana Del Rey. He also wanted to design the album specifically as a 4-sided, double vinyl album, each side having a distinct character in the manner of The Beatles’ White Album or Jimi Hendrix’s Electric Ladyland. “I worked on the album through 2018-19 with another intensive period of writing and recording at the beginning of 2019. The resulting double album is my first-ever solo release and is, for me, the culmination of nearly 60 years of fascination and ultimately, obsession with Music and Recordings.” Music Videos: "A Long Time" - Jack Hues "Whitstable Beach" - Jack Hues

Critical cuts to people with disabilities who rely on California's In Home Support Services (IHSS)have begun. Pushing Limits talks to Bobby Bogan, Executive Director of Seniors Organizing Seniors. Bogan sees both fear and courage as the State of California implements massive cuts. On November 1st, 130 thousand people will be reduced or axed from the IHSS program.  Over450 thousand people face unannounced home visits and routine fingerprinting.  Seniors, people living with AIDS and the developmentally disabled community face similar and overlapping slashes to programs they depend on.
