After they kick off the episode with some Everton and Manchester United chat, they ask if Sevilla can mount a title challenge and how long it will be until Inter pull away in Italy. Then there's the more bizarre ones, as newly-promoted Union St. Gilloise lead the way in Belgium, Ajax have conceded just four goals but are second in the Eredivisie, meanwhile none of Turkey's big clubs are anywhere to be seen in that title race. Any more leagues we should be focusing on? Let us know in the comments section!

It's a Continental Club takeover this week on the podcast as Dougie Critchley and Michael McCubbin join Henry Hill for a slightly different episode. With the Ballon D'or 2021 nominations being released, the trio take a look at the award since 2008, when Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo began their duopoly. If this pair didn't exist, who would have won each year instead? A lot of talk about Andres Iniesta and Xavi, naturally, but also fond memories of Manuel Neuer, Franck Ribery and Wesley Sneijder come up. Has Neymar deserved one on merit in the last few years, and how the hell did Luis Suarez not win it that one year? It's a great chat.

Phill and Stephen connected in 2018 and met for a beer at the Continental Club in Austin. Shortly after hitting it off they set out to play and write country music for folks in Central Texas. Not only do they draw from musical heroes; their music honors saints, sinners, lunatics, lovers, and poets. The songs tell stories of hurt, heartbreak, laughter, friendship, and even mental illness. Their style is drawn from some of the greatest names in the history of country music, and we bring authentic, Texas-born music to the most iconic dance halls and venues in Central Texas.
In this week's episode we're featuring the studio version of an event which became an Austin, Texas institution: "Happy Birthday Buck: A Texas Salute To Buck Owens" (2002). When a couple of accomplished Austin-area musicians in Casper Rawls and Tom Lewis started kicking around the idea to hold a Buck Owens birthday party, they didn't think anyone would show up. It was mostly just an excuse to pick on some Bakersfield Sound and have some fun. But on August 12, 1992 (Buck's 63rd birthday), the legendary Continental Club was a full house and the event was so popular that Buck Owens Birthday Bash became an annual event. Over 25 years, Buck's Birthday Bash attracted local musicians and legends alike, and this week's feature album commemorates ten years with a stack of names (some regular Birthday Bash attendees, some just admirers) covering Owens' hits, from the big ones to the lesser known gems - with contributions from David Ball, Rick Trevino, Rosie Flores, Jim Lauderdale, Libbi Bosworth, Jeff Hughes, Ray Benson and one very special guest who made Buck's 1995 Birthday Bash one for the history books!

I’m talking to Nick James. His real last name is Boettcher but everyone knows how to pronounce James over Boettcher. He’s the lead guitar of the Reverent Few, a killer Austin band with a ton of soul and groove. I loved talking with Nick about his top five. It’s just so lovely how everyone picks their top five for different reasons. Some day I will understand Bob Dylan. Believe me. I want to get it. I just don’t yet. They’ve got an album coming out later this month on Saturday, March 28th, at the Continental Club. They hit the stage at 10pm. It’s gonna be epic. You should really check this out. My guest this month is a Canadian-born, Austin-based guitar player of the highest calibre, Redd Volkaert. Redd grew up not far from where I did, just outside of Vancouver, Canada. He spent years cutting his teeth and learning to play in the seedy country cars of Canada, before packing up and heading south, embarking on adventures in music through California and Nashville, before landing an incredible (and well-deserved) gig as guitar player for Merle Haggard, for whom he played and recorded with for many years. Redd is now a regular fixture around Austin, Texas, playing regularly at The Continental Club, The Saxon Pub and other great venues with his own group, Haybale! and shows with the likes of Cindy Cashdollar and Bill Kirchen. I had a chance to catch up with Redd recently and talk about his fascinating history, influences, playing and recording with Merle, and much more. Enjoy my conversation with Redd Volkaert!
