Sika (cervus nippon) is a mid-sized deer that was introduced to Ireland in the 1860s to the Powerscourt Estate. Soon after that, it started spreading across Ireland. Today, the main concentrations of sika are in Kerry, Wicklow, Tyrone and Fermanagh. More recently, it has also been found in Waterford, Galway, Limerick, and Wexford. The National Biodiversity Data Centre in Ireland lists sika as an invasive species. Despite that, it's afforded protection under the Wildlife Act. It is prized by hunters as a game species and a source of excellent quality venison on the one hand, and hated by foresters and environmentalists for the damage to forestry and biodiversity on the other.Sika is present on the entire European continent and, although not as widespread as in Ireland, it is also causing similar problems. This is reflected in the recent move by the European Commission to launch consultations to put sika on the Invasive Alien Species (IAS) list across the Union. This poses the obvious question: what does it mean for the Irish population of sika if the EC makes such a decision? Will or should it be allowed continuous protection with open and closed hunting seasons? Or should it be reduced to the status of vermin and be eradicated across the country? To discuss the potential future of sika deer in Ireland and present a whole spectrum of views about this species, and invasive species more generally, I spoke with four expert guests presenting different views on the subject. By listening to this episode you will hear from Professor Jaimie T.A. Dick who specialises in Invasion Ecology, Eoghan Daltun an award-winning author who has spent last 15 years regenerating an Irish Atlantic rainforest, Damien Hannigan a Government Appointee to the Irish Deer Management Forum and Public Relations Officer at the Irish Deer Commission, and Professor of Wildlife Restoration Ecology, Adam T. We all love to see a conservation project on a previously endangered wildlife species succeed. But what happens if a formerly small population grows to a point where its size becomes unsustainable? Performing a cull? Definitely not the most pleasant option. Our guest, Dr Ai-Mei Chang, works on a way more ethical solution: She develops and tests immuno-castration vaccines for the population control of wildlife species. In addition, she has worked on a range of infectious diseases in small wild carnivores. Ai-Mei completed her degree in veterinary medicine and her PhD at the National Pingtung University of Science and Technology in Taiwan. This week we dive into a success story on a not so commonly known species of deer the sika deer. Sika deer a native of southern Japan, were released on Maryland's lower eastern shore in 1916 Clement Henry and have thrived alongside the native whitetail to produce a prolific and huntable species. In the month of October if you happen to find yourself in the Maryland Marsh you just might hear the bugle of a Sika Deer, but don't let that fool you into thinking a public land hunt will come easy.UPO Gear & Such- https://uponation.co/ UPO Social Media- https://linktr.ee/underpressureoutdoorsHazmore Outdoor Products- https://hazmore.net/Use Code UPO15 at checkout for 15% off your next order!HangFree- https://hangfree.co/ Use code UPO10 at checkout for 10% off your next order!Mud Bug Bash 2024 Tickets- https://www.10canoutdoors.com/events/2024-crawfish-boil-poker-run?fbclid=IwAR0f2-Qu-TkIfEVrgU9esadoY-AeJKUd0HNMZzG_PUAZUMxKoVgyG019IC0

Jesse P-S from Cringe vs Cringe (https://madcastmedia.com/shows/cringevscringe/) on this network joins the show this week for our yearly New Year predictions. Rucka made three predictions last year, namely that I would fall in love with Trump, Taylor Swift would clean up her act and that I would fuck off. Did any of those come true? NO. Especially the last one. One of mine did come true, but only if you think evidence matters. Watch the video version here at Madcast Media Network YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChMUFeIZ1l9uRJ4bIXuAKDg?sub_confirmation=1 Rucka (https://www.youtube.com/user/itsRucka) makes some very interesting predictions for the coming year, but is it compelling enough to trump my taco burger prediction? Only time will tell. Mikey Bolts (https://www.youtube.com/user/michaelbalalis) is out for the holidays, but I suspect he'd have also predicted taco burger. We may never know. https://youtu.be/_snt45unyqY And for those curious, here's the Italian "Three Bears" cartoon if you want to watch the full thing: https://youtu.be/XuGpdFlsf6c And it's finally here: https://madcastmedia.com/shows/maddoxvsuniverse/3/ Also, a big you're-welcome to everyone who ordered my book: F*CK WHALES: Petty Essays from a Brilliant Mind: http://amzn.to/2oiF2xi Finally we round out the episode with a story of monkeys that are humping Sika Deer in Japan, and people outraged over Alexa results. Brett Westwood relives programmes from 50 years of the Living World archives. In this episode from 2009, Lionel Kelleway is in Dorset with Dr Anita Diaz from Bournemouth University, for the sika deer rut. Lionel heads to Purbeck in Dorset with Dr Anita Diaz to experience the sights and unusual sounds of sika at the start of the rutting season. Sika Deer are aliens to the UK but now are well established as part of the British landscape, though Purbeck has one of the larger concentrations. As the night draws in, the sika come off the salt marsh around Poole Harbour to graze the grasslands of Purbeck. This being the rutting season, the sika are noisily proclaiming their status, with a call once described as a mournful whale song across the English countryside.
