Ruck 'n Roll The Musical. Not as supercalifragilisticexpialidocious as it sounds. Our musical adventure this week involves Fiddlers, Face masks, Felines and Frank 'n Furter. Fabulous! On the sporting stage it's Spinners, Spurs and Superbowl. Ruck 'n Roll The Musical does contains bad singing, musical ineptness and occasional mentions of Andrew Lloyd Webber (but only in a derogatory manner). Over the last two decades, the Swiss artist Franziska Furter has repeatedly addressed the weather as a theme in her work. This is also the case in her latest installation Gyrwint, which is currently on view at the Triennale in the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne. The power of nature is made tangible here with a huge carpet that shows a compilation of several infrared satellite images of hurricanes. The installation Haku floats above it - strands of glass beads that represent wafts of mist.

If you're like me and you were a child of the 80's, then Jason Donovan was your world. He burst onto our screens as the star of Neighbours, Scott and Charlene, Jason and Kylie… at the peak of the soap opera's powers. Jason became famous in Australia and around the world, particularly the UK where he'd launch his pop career and a wild adventurous life. That life was filled with ups and downs, drug addiction, controversy, but also new beginnings. For the past 20 years, Jason has been a star of musical theatre, wowing audiences with turns in Joseph and his Technicolour Dreamcoat, Chicago, and the Rocky Horror show. It's that production that's brought him back home, starring in the 50th anniversary tour as Frank n' Furter. And I just had to have him Take 5. Jason is a bloody legend, he has a brilliant outlook on life and a gratitude and lightness in how he approaches it. So I gave him the theme of LIFE – why not hey? He's had a heck of one, so far. From Bowie to INXS to Rick Astley, this Take 5 will give you life. David Bowie - Ashes to Ashes Talk Talk – It's My Life Rick Astley – Never Gonna Give You Up INXS – To Look At You Boy Meets Girl – Waiting for a Star to Fall

On this edition of the Richard Crouse Show we meet Emm Gryner. She is a Canadian musician and vocal coach. David Bowie named Emm as one of his two favourite Canadian acts. U2 frontman Bono named her song “Almighty Love” as one of six songs that he wished he had written. Gryner toured in David Bowie's band, singing and playing keyboards, and appears on the recordings Bowie at the Beeb and Glastonbury 2000. Emm helped make the first music video in outer space with Chris Hadfield and is also the author of a book called “The Healing Power of Singing: Raise Your Voice, Change Your Life: What Touring With David Bowie, Single Parenting And Ditching The Music Business Taught Me In 25 Easy Steps.” Her new album is “Business & Pleasure” is a celebration of the Detroit radio scene and the music that shaped her childhood. From Motown, jazz and pop, to Steely Dan, Fleetwood Mac and the Doobies, Business & Pleasure is infused with the sunshine soul and stellar playing of the late 70s and early 80s. Then, Gord Sinclair stops by. Best known as the bass player and one of the songwriters in The Tragically Hip, he is now a “reluctant solo artist” with a new album called In Continental Drift, available now wherever you buy fine music. Finally, we go into the vault to revisit my interview with the late, great rock photographer Mick Rock. He is often referred to as ‘The Man Who Shot the Seventies', for his iconic images of Syd Barrett, David Bowie, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Queen, The Ramones, Blondie, Rocky Horror Picture Show, etc. London born, he has resided in New York for over 35 years. He has shot over 100 album covers. Rock was instrumental in creating many key rock ‘n' roll images, such as album covers for Syd Barrett's Madcap Laughs, Lou Reed's Transformer and Coney Island Baby, Iggy and The Stooges' Raw Power, Queen's Queen II (recreated for their classic music video ‘Bohemian Rhapsody') and Sheer Heart Attack, The Ramones End of the Century and Joan Jett's I Love Rock ‘n' Roll, among many others. He was the chief photographer on the films The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Shortbus. He recently shot special stills for the new TV version of Rocky Horror, featuring the transgender actress Laverne Cox as Frank n Furter. He also produced and directed the seminal music videos for Bowie: ‘John, I'm Only Dancing', ‘Jean Genie', ‘Space Oddity', and ‘Life On Mars'.

Hackaday editors Tom Nardi and Elliot Williams bring you up to speed on the most interesting stories of the week. Hackaday's Remoticon and Germany's Chaos Communication Congress are virtual again this year, but the Vintage Computer Festival will be live. We'll also talk about ocean-going drones, the recreation of an old-school light bulb with a potato peeler, cheap smart watches with hidden potential, and sanding down shady modules to figure out just how you've been scammed. Stick around for some thoughts on turning real-estate signs into a handy prototyping material, and to find out why some very impressive Soviet tech is getting the boot from America's space program. 3B Productions: October 1-2, Stone Productions:November 5th & 6th One fateful night, Brad Majors and his fiancée, Janet Weiss — a wholesome, well-behaved, utterly normal young couple in love — innocently set out to visit an old professor. Unfortunately for them, this night out is destined to be one they will never forget. A thunderstorm and a flat-tire force them to seek help at the castle of Dr. Frank 'N' Furter, an alien, transvestite scientist with a manic genius and insatiable libido. Brad, Janet, and Frank' N' Furter's cohorts are swept up into the scientist's latest experiment. The night's misadventures will cause Brad and Janet to question everything they've known about themselves, each other, love, and lust. A loving homage to the classic B sci-fi film and horror genres with an irresistible rock'n'roll score, The Rocky Horror Show is a hilarious, wild ride that no audience will soon forget.

Alex made his West End debut in the RSC/Opera North production of Showboat at The London Palladium in 1991. Shortly after this he joined the London production of Buddy at The Victoria Palace Theatre. In 1992 Alex joined the American touring company of Buddy and performed at The White House in the presence of President & Mrs George Bush.On his return Alex took over the role of Buddy Holly (his idol!) in the London production for two years. He went on to Only The Lonely at The Whitehall theatre, London and then played Kenickie in the 1st National tour of Grease, taking over the lead role of Danny Zuko when the show transferred to the Cambridge Theatre, London. After this, Alex played the role of Gaston in Disney's Beauty & The Beast at the Dominion Theatre, London.A change of pace saw Alex in stockings and suspenders as Dr. Frank'n'Furter in The Rocky Horror Show. He then played another one of his singing idols, Dean Martin in The Rat Pack – Live from Las Vegas on the national tour. After a stint in Chicago at The Adelphi, London playing Billy Flynn, and tours of The Magnificent Musicals with Ruthie Henshall, Alex returned to Disney's Beauty & The Beast, this time playing the role of The Beast, before playing Dean Martin again in The Rat Pack at the then Strand Theatre, London.Alex then joined the cast of We Will Rock You at The Dominion theatre which was to be his home for the next six years playing Khashoggi. During this time, Alex became a father to his beloved daughter Josie, after marrying his wife, Jo in Las Vegas! (as a life-long Elvis fan – where else?!)A career highlight followed when he played Fred/Petruchio in Trevor Nunn's production of Kiss Me, Kate at Chichester and then The Old Vic theatre, London for which he received an Olivier nomination for Best Actor in a Musical.Alex played Daryl Van Horne in Craig Revel Horwood's production of The Witches Of Eastwick at The Watermill Theatre, Newbury for which he received a TMA nomination for Best Actor and then went on to originate the role of Bob in Midsummer Songs at the New Wolsey theatre, Ipswich. He then did his second pantomime as Blackheart in Robinson Crusoe at Cliff's Pavilion, Southend with Gok Wan and Brian Conley. In early 2017, Alex played Sam Carmichael in the national tour of Mamma Mia! just prior to the London and Toronto productions of Annie during 2017/18. Most recently he appeared as Lex Hogan in the new British musical, Eugenius at The Other Palace, London.Over the years, Alex has been privileged to perform in numerous concerts and broadcasts including – Friday Night is Music Night for BBC Radio 2, A Night of a Thousand Voices at The Royal Albert Hall, "All About Bond" at The Henley Festival with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, The Kiss Me, Kate BBC Prom with the John Wilson Orchestra at The Royal Albert Hall for BBC2 and he was honoured to perform live at The Olivier Awards the year of his nomination.Alex would like to thank all the amazing “Annies” he has worked with, for making this show so special.

Let's do the Time Warp again! This week, Ben & Megan pull up their fishnet stockings and synch-up their tightest corsets to join Tim Curry and company in this wild ride of a movie, based on the musical of the (mostly) same name! Brad and Janet are newly engaged, but tragedy befalls them in the form of a flat tire, They must now seek shelter in the castle of Dr. Frank N. Furter! He's been makin' a man (with blonde hair and a tan), and he's invited the whole world for the big reveal. Can Brad & Janet escape with their innocence intact? Hot Patootie, bless our souls, we really love this movie! Fine Music Radio — The Rocky Horror show is playing to packed houses here at Artscape with Craig Urbani in the role of Frank n Furter and Kate Normington as the narrator. This all new, fast, Slick production is the London production which has been touring for the last 13 years, but with an all-South African cast here in Cape Town. The director is Christopher Luscombe who began his career as an actor spending 7 years with the Royal Shakespeare Company and then moved to directing where he has directed many successful shows. In this week’s edition of People of Note, Rodney Trudgeon spoke to Christopher Luscombe about his career and about his approach to this cult and iconic musical.
Fine Music Radio — The iconic musical The Rocky Horror Show is playing during the festive season here at the Artscape Opera House. Since it first opened in June 1973 at the Royal Court Theatre Upstair’s, Richard O’Brien’s musical has achieved cut status and Pieter Toerien’s production is the new, world-wide success directed by Christopher Luscombe.
There are many things you can do yourself, like DIY, and many you absolutely should not DIY, like piercings, and it’s all getting chatted out in this instalment of I Don’t Know Her. Aoife and Bláithín have some belly laughs this week, but aren’t too fond of RDS roadshows or being let down by cult classics (we trusted you Frank n’ Furter and weekend don’t know why). Also Karen is a victim of shame and a huge fan of West Side Story.

Mick Rock, legendary photographer, "The Man Who Shot the Seventies," drops by the Richard Crouse Show. His bio: Legendary rock photographer Mick Rock is often referred to as ‘The Man Who Shot the Seventies’, for his iconic images of Syd Barrett, David Bowie, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Queen, The Ramones, Blondie, Rocky Horror Picture Show, etc. London born, he has resided in New York for over 35 years. He has shot over 100 album covers. Rock was instrumental in creating many key rock ‘n’ roll images, such as album covers for Syd Barrett’s Madcap Laughs, Lou Reed’s Transformer and Coney Island Baby, Iggy and The Stooges’ Raw Power, Queen’s Queen II (recreated for their classic music video ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’) and Sheer Heart Attack, The Ramones End of the Century and Joan Jett’s I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll, among many others. He was the chief photographer on the films The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Shortbus. He recently shot special stills for the new TV version of Rocky Horror, featuring the transgender actress Laverne Cox as Frank n Furter. He also produced and directed the seminal music videos for Bowie: ‘John, I’m Only Dancing’, ‘Jean Genie’, ‘Space Oddity’, and ‘Life On Mars’. A classic quote from Mick in the London Times, who dubbed him ‘the music world’s top snapper’: “I’ve never felt like a voyeur, although I’ve certainly done plenty of looking! I work from the inside out. Like a cook I gather all the ingredients and keep mixing and stirring and tasting until the kind of effluvia starts to rise, then I’m off to the races. It’s an addictive kind of a feeling that I need a regular shot of otherwise I don’t feel right…” See an exhibition of his work at the LISS GALLERY in Toronto, 112 Cumberland St - 416-787-9872.
Fine Music Radio — Rodney Trudgeon’s guest on People of Note this week is an incredible versatile actor and singer, cabaret artist and drag artist BRENDAN VAN RHYN who is possibly better known as Cathy Specific or you may even have seen his memorable and outrageous interpretation of Frank n Furter in the Rocky Horror Show. Brendan grew up in a loving Afrikaans family home and had dreams of becoming a medical doctor. However, the universe seems to have had other plans for him and he was tempted by the world of entertainment and has not looked back since.

In dark days, when the values of democracy and equality seem threatened who doesn't want to don some fishnets and dance the Time Warp? Who wouldn't rather blast off to the planet Transsexual in the galaxy of Transylvania? Why not construct a blond, tanned muscle god who exists solely for the purpose of 'relieving our tension', as we fuck indiscriminately in a bacchanalian orgy? We didn't get to THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW at Halloween but in our post-Election daze perhaps Dr. Frank N. Furter is exactly the presiding spirit we really need right now. For Seán, the film was a seminal adolescent text: introducing him to queerness, camp, and the possibility of a life lived in the company of weirdos. For Brian, it was a cult classic that he never got around to seeing. In this next installment of our miniseries THE MALE GAYZ, we debate the film's merits as well as its representation of sexual fluidity. (SPOILER ALERT: We don't agree.) Even if the contentiousness seems to reflect the current global mood, hopefully we can all remember that there's still a light over at the Frankenstein place... DON'T DREAM IT, BE IT! The production is a parody tribute to the science fiction and horror B movies of the 1930s through early 1970s. The film stars Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, and Barry Bostwick along with cast members from the original Royal Court Theatre, Roxy Theatre, and Belasco Theatreproductions. The story centres on a young engaged couple whose car breaks down in the rain near a castle where they seek a telephone to call for help. The castle is occupied by strangers in elaborate costumes celebrating an annual convention. They discover the head of the house is Frank N. Furter, an apparent mad scientist who actually is an a

Is Laverne Cox up to playing the iconic Frank N. Furter in Fox’s production of Rocky Horror.
It's Halloween, so to open this week's episode, Kaila recounts a ghost story she read about in local author David Dominé's book, "True Ghost Stories and Eerie Legends from America’s Most Haunted Neighborhood." The neighborhood in question is Old Louisville, and this story is specific to St. James Court - where we might never set foot again now that we've heard this! Legend has it that St. James residence didn't want St. James Flats (the area's first apartment complex) to be as tall as planned, so someone set it on fire. What they didn't know was that a little boy was supposedly on the top floor, warming up between grocery deliveries, when the fire took hold. Because he wasn't wealthy or important, so the story goes, his death was never reported on. But people say you can see his ghost in the courtyard on nights when there is snow or frost on the ground. We also talked about the five most popular, and least popular, Halloween candies in the U.S. Kaila named four out of five of the most popular candies without looking at the list ("I'm obsessed with candy," she explained). And Halloween wouldn't be complete without our favorite freaky movies — one of which is Rocky Horror Picture Show! Last week, we learned that Fox will release a "re-imagining" of the cult classic next fall, with Laverne Cox playing the lead role of Dr. Frank N. Furter. We love everything Laverne does, and this will surely be no different, but people have voiced some reservations, which we do understand. Will it confuse a mainstream audience to see a trans woman playing a character who calls themself a transvestite? Or will it be transgressive and reclaiming? Ultimately, we trust Laverne not to do anything that would set back the trans cause (and also we want Janelle Monáe to play Columbia). And speaking of famous people who have been on our show, we've been lucky enough to talk to some very notable folks. But sometimes it's great to check in with people in our own communities who are doing great things. So this week, our feature interviews are with two such people. Ontra Caples is the founder and CEO of Down Home Tea. When he was growing up, his grandma was known for her sweet tea. No neighborhood cookout or church supper was complete without it. After a stint in the military, briefly owning a store, then trying his hand at laying carpet, Caples decided to take that tried and true tea recipe to the next level. Now, Down Home Tea can be found in Kroger and ValuMarket, and Caples is winning awards at trade shows. He stopped by the studio to tell us his story. And Professor Sheila Barbour was working in higher education when she realized her students (mostly from small towns) had a lot to say about diversity. She interviewed them, and the result was a book called "Diversity's Voice: Now and Then." She joined us this week to share some of what she learned from the project.

Getting out there, trying new things, keeping an open mind, knowing yourself, and being comfortable with the skin you live in (or the skin that's been foisted upon you.) Some heavy themes from a couple of cult classic films are being discussed in the Nighthawks Cafe. First up is the 1975 THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW, a rock musical that takes a couple of unsuspecting virgins into the clutches of an alien transvestite mad scientist, the final destination? A world of absolute pleasure. Then a story of duality, questioning of the self, personal identity, and more Rock and Roll. John Cameron Mitchell is the title character of HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH, another rock musical, the film follows a person struggling to find sexual and gender identity in a world of love, loss, fame, greed, sex, and some pretty slick one-liners. Hedwig and her band travel the country telling Hedwig's challenging story of change, self, and broken hearts.
