Segment 2, November 16th, 2024 When we last spoke with our next guest, we had a sneak preview of a proposed restoration project involving NC's most prolific cold water fish hatchery, the  Bobby N. Setzer Hatchery in Pisgah forest. Of course Helene's devastation brought unimaginable devastation to property, lives, & communities across parts of WNC.  It also has caused a possible change of plans to recreational fishing in the mountains. Jake Rash is the Coldwater Research Coordinator for the NC Wildlife Resources Commission, where he helps with the coordination of research and management of NC's trout resources.  He recently spoke with Carolina Outdoor host, Bill Bartee, about the trout waters on North Carolina in 2024. Show Highlights: The Armstrong Fish Hatchery near Marion had the most damage during the Helene storm There is a revised trout stocking occurring for the rest of 2024.  The NC Wildlife Resource Commission is developing plans on how to properly move forward. The western region of North Carolina & its economy count on trout fishing and it was important to safely stock the streams for people. The Trout Page is the best resource to learn plans as they are announced and developed. Eastern Brook Trout Joint Venture approved Jacob "Jake" Rash as its new Chairman in 2022.  He says that he's anxious to find how the Brookies handle the storm in certain parts of the state.  They can handle lots of water but the landslides are another story. Things You'll Learn by Listening: Jake Rash will be on-hand in Charlotte on Thursday, November 21st, 2024, at 6:30 p.m. as a part of the open Rocky River Trout Unlimited meeting at Jesse Brown's.  Everyone is invited to come out and meet Jake and learn more about the cold water trout resources. Looking Into Hatcheries - With Dr Andrea Phillott

Sea Turtle Stories

Sea turtle hatcheries are a popular conservation strategy across the world, easily recognised as fenced enclosures on turtle nesting beaches. These enclosures house turtle eggs, relocated from natural nests on the beach, to a more controlled environment that protects them from various threats. Ideally, a hatchery would produce more hatchlings than a natural nest. However, relocating sea turtle eggs is more complex than it seems, with hatchery management being an intensive practice. "When we move eggs, we risk jostling the embryos inside. There's a very narrow window to move eggs safely, ideally within two hours of being laid," explains Dr. Andrea Phillott, a Sea Turtle Biologist from Australia and Professor of Environmental Studies at Flame University, India. And that's just the beginning! In this fourth episode of Sea Turtle Stories, Dr Andrea takes us through the careful considerations in building and running a hatchery, from creating the perfect artificial nest, paying attention to its depth, shape, temperature, and distance from other nests, to assessing even the sand quality. While Dr. Andrea is widely published on various aspects of sea turtle conservation, her most recent research focuses on hatchery management practices in South Asia, making her the ideal expert for this discussion on hatcheries. So join our Host, Dr. Minnie, and Guest Speaker, Dr. Andrea, as they delve into the intricacies of hatchery management and address critical issues, such as the efficacy of hatcheries, their role in a changing climate, protocol on hatchling releases, and more.Links For Additional Reading:Kale, N., & Phillott, A. Getting to the Root: A Clear Presentation of Brave New WorldChapter 1 Navigating Brave New World: A Summary and Review“Brave New World” by Aldous Huxley is a chilling vision of the future where individualism is sacrificed for the sake of social harmony. In the novel, humans are created in labs and conditioned from birth to accept their predetermined roles in society. The protagonist, Bernard Marx, is an outsider who rebels against this system, ultimately leading to tragic consequences. Huxley's writing can be dense, but the book's themes of conformity, personal identity, and the dangers of unchecked power are both timeless and haunting. Overall, “Brave New World” is a must-read for fans of dystopian fiction and anyone interested in the ethical implications of scientific progress.Chapter 2 Meeting the Proficient Scribe of Brave New World: Aldous HuxleyAldous Huxley was a literary trailblazer whose work challenged convention and pushed the boundaries of what was possible in literature. Born in England in 1894, Huxley came from a family of intellectuals and grew up surrounded by books and ideas. Throughout his career, Huxley explored a wide range of interests, from science fiction and dystopian literature to essays and philosophy. His most famous work, Brave New World, remains a classic of dystopian literature that warns against the dangers of technology and conformity. In addition to his literary achievements, Huxley was also deeply interested in spirituality and mysticism. He experimented with psychedelic drugs like mescaline and wrote about his experiences in works such as The Doors of Perception. Despite his death in 1963, Huxley's influence on literature and culture continues to be felt today. His innovative ideas and imaginative storytelling continue to inspire new generations of readers and writers, cementing his place as one of the most important writers of the 20th century.Chapter 3 Navigating the Essential Notions: A Review of Brave New World's ChaptersBrave New World is a classic dystopian novel that explores the consequences of a society built on pleasure and conformity. In chapter one, we are introduced to the World State, a society that has eliminated war and unrest by creating citizens through artificial insemination and conditioning techniques. The Director of Hatcheries and Conditioning oversees this process, ensuring that citizens are conditioned to value consumption and pleasure above all else. Chapter two focuses on the character of Bernard Marx, an alpha male who feels out of place in the rigid social hierarchy of the World State. He meets Lenina Crowne, a woman who embodies the values of the World State, and they embark on a trip to a savage reservation in chapter three. Here, we see the contrast between the savages, who value individuality, tradition, and religion, and the citizens of the World State, who reject those things in favor of conformity and pleasure.Chapter 4 Core Observations from Brave New World Audio Book Notes1. The novel's futuristic society is built upon the suppression of individuality and the use of drugs to maintain order and control.2. Bernard Marx serves as the protagonist who struggles with the inherent conflict between his desire for personal freedom and his obligation to conform to societal norms.3. The book explores complex themes such as the dangers of science and technology, the role of happiness in society, and the importance of individuality.4. Huxley's writing style can be challenging for some readers, but the ideas and themes...

In this episode of the Montana Outdoor Podcast, you will learn all about Montana's Walleye fishery! Maybe we should have called this podcast "Walleye 101" or if we wanted to get a little cheeky, "Mommy Where Do Walleye Come From". But seriously this week we had Fisheries Biologist Heath Headley from FWP Region 6 in Glasgow, Montana on the show and we were able to learn all about Walleye in Fort Peck Reservoir and how Walleye are reared at the Hatcheries in Fort Peck and Miles City and placed into lakes all around Montana. The conversation with Heath went even deeper than that, however. Downrigger Dale and The Captain asked Heath all kinds of questions, like:How do you collect Walleye eggs for the hatcheries during the spawning season when the lake is still covered with ice like it is this year? How do they usually collect Walleye eggs and how many do they usually collect? (Spoiler Alert! You are not going to believe that number!!! WOW!!)If they can't collect many eggs this year due to the ice cover will the walleye populations around Montana be, ok?Do big Walleye produce offspring that will also become big Walleye?Does a Walleye return to the same spawning grounds it went to during the last spawning season?Wait a minute! How far did you say that tagged Walleye traveled!?Can interested people actually participate in the Walleye egg collection effort? And those are just a few of the questions that were answered in this fascinating podcast. So, give it a listen now! In the last few decades, epigenetics has revolutionized the fields of ecology and evolution by showing that environment can interact with the genome itself, driving changes in gene expression. Sometimes these epigenetics can even be heritable. And that has enormous importance for fish released from hatcheries as well as the wild fish they interact with. Public fish hatcheries have a long history in North America, with many culture methods and innovations used in today's commercial aquaculture industry, first developed at public fish hatcheries. This includes water reuse. While water reuse was initially very basic, as the understanding of fish biology and water quality increased, so did the ways in which water was treated for reuse. Some of the first water reuse systems that included a biofilter and oxygenation, were built at public fish hatcheries. These basic RAS were predecessors to the intensive RAS used in today's commercial operations. There are a good number of water reuse systems and intensive RAS at public fish hatcheries today, but few public fish hatchery programs have adopted intensive RAS like the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. During this episode of RAS Talk, Alaska Department of Fish and Game's Jeff Milton, Sport Fish Hatchery program supervisor, and Travis Hyer, Ruth Burnett Sport Fish Hatchery manager, give us some insight on how their public hatcheries have successfully moved toward RAS.

Welcome to Episode 35 of The Outdoor Narrative, a podcast about fishing, hunting and other wild pursuits in British Columba and western Canada. This week, I talked to Stacy Webb and Adrian Clarke of the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC about raising sport fish, illegally introduced species (including goldfish and an occasional piranha) and the science behind stocking the wildest trout possible from hatchery environments.  Most anglers never think about where the fish they catch come from. They are just there, always present and hopefully eager to bite. The fact is, many of our best sportfishing lakes offer great fishing only because of the work of the Freshwater Fisheries Society, the not-for profit agency that runs B.C.'s fish hatcheries and stocking programs. The program is supported entirely by money from the sale of fishing licences in B.C. The sportfishing crowd is getting older, however, which means fewer people to buy licences as the years pass. The FFSBC is well aware of the trend and works hard every year to encourage new, younger anglers to give fishing a try. It's just one of the many challenges FFSBC staff face when managing a complex operation across a diverse province such as B.C. …  Thanks for listening to this week's episode. If you want to share a thought, send me an email at info@theoutdoornarrative.com. I'm Robert Koopmans, thanks again, and we'll catch you next time.

ARTIFISHAL is a film about wild rivers and wild fish. It explores the high cost – ecological, financial and cultural – of our mistaken belief that engineered solutions can make up for habitat destruction. The film traces the impact of fish hatcheries and farms, and the extraordinary amount of American taxpayer dollars wasted on an industry that hinders wild fish recovery, pollutes our rivers, and contributes to the problem it claims to solve. ARTIFISHAL also dives beneath the surface of the open-water fish farm controversy, as citizens work to stop the damage done to public waters and our remaining wild salmon. Director Josh Murphy joins us for a conversation on the devastating consequences that fish hatcheries are having on the salmon and other native species, the damage being done vital eco-systems and the enormous cost of a failed system. Call to Action: Wild salmon and southern resident killer whales are on the brink of extinction. Now a misguided plan to feed the starving whales with hatchery salmon will push both endangered species closer to the edge, while costing taxpayers millions of dollars per year. Hatcheries and over harvest, along with net-pen fish farms and dams, are key contributors to the catastrophic decline of wild Chinook salmon and southern resident killer whales in the Pacific Northwest. Now, Washington state’s Orca Task Force recommendations include a plan to “feed the orcas” with 60 million more hatchery salmon per year. The proposed budget requests up to $87 million dollars to fund this plan for 10 years. Science tells us this won’t work: orcas need larger wild salmon, while adding more hatchery fish further weakens the wild-salmon gene pool. The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) have the power to make this change. Patagonia's petition calls on NOAA Regional Administrator Barry Thom, WDFW Director Kelly Susewind, and our elected decision makers to stop wasting money on failed plans and invest in science-based solutions: reduce hatchery production, remove dams and change how we harvest salmon. Hatchery & Wild is a campaign to highlight the importance of fish hatcheries.  For decades they have provided important mitigation for the loss of naturally spawned salmon and steelhead.  And, absent hatchery supplementation there is a good chance that a lot of very popular fisheries would have ended a long time ago. Hatcheries have been viewed by some as a major contributor to the decline of wild salmon and steelhead populations.  That premise has led to significant reductions, and in several cases complete elimination, of hatchery supplementation in hopes of reviving wild fish numbers. Recent studies show that removing hatchery fish does not, by itself, result in an increase in wild fish. There is no known instance in Oregon or Washington, where the reduction or elimination of hatchery supplementation from watersheds with a historical wild fish population, resulted in an increase in wild fish abundance absent other contributing factors. It is time to change the anti-hatchery narrative. History — and now sound science — shows hatcheries do not have an adverse impact on wild fish abundance and they are critical to enjoying robust and healthy fisheries.  Visit Their Website ► https://hatchery-wild-coexist.com ►►► Watch Other Videos Below! ◄◄◄ Addicted Life ► http://bit.ly/addictedlifeyoutube Addicted Fishing Podcast ► http://bit.ly/AFPodcastYoutube Addicted Alaska ► http://bit.ly/addictedakyoutube Addicted "How-TO'S" ► http://bit.ly/addictedhowtos Addicted Fishing Tips ► http://bit.ly/addictedfishingtips Fishing Entertainment ► http://bit.ly/fishingentertainment ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ►►► ADD US ON ALL SOCIAL MEDIA ◄◄◄ Facebook ► http://bit.ly/addictedfishingFB Discussion Board ► http://bit.ly/addictedfishingforum Instagram ► http://bit.ly/addictedfishingIG Podcast ► http://bit.ly/addictedfishingpodcast Twitter ► http://bit.ly/addictedfishingtwitter ► EMAIL FOR BUSINESS INQUIRIES: marlin@addicted.fishing

The Clinch River was great place to celebrate this partnership. The river is always among the best tailwaters in the state producing trophy rainbow and brown trout. TWRA, USFWS, and TVA all contribute to this fishery. Funding for trout production comes from TVA and TWRA. The fish are produced at USFWS’s Dale Hollow Hatchery and TWRA’s Buffalo Springs Hatchery. Each year over 240,000 rainbow, brown, and brook trout are stocked in this 12-mile tailwater. Earlier this spring, I drove to a small beaver pond near my home in Colorado, snapped together my fishing rod, and cast a silver lure into the pond’s crystalline waters. Within twenty minutes, I’d caught dinner: a pair of glittering rainbow trout, olive backs spattered with a constellation of black spots. The fish were gorgeous, and, roasted with oil and garlic, would prove delicious. But, having just read Douglas M. Thompson‘s The Quest for the Golden Trout: Environmental Loss and America’s Iconic Fish (University Press of New England, 2013), my enjoyment was just a tad diminished by one piece of knowledge: the fish had been stocked. Every year, government fisheries agencies around the country pour tens of millions of hatchery-raised trout into America’s rivers and lakes. These stocked fish generate vast revenues in the form of fishing licenses and gear sales, and they provide innumerable anglers pleasure and the occasional meal. But, as Thompson’s book reveals, the widespread dissemination of hatchery fish is doing profound ecological harm. Stocked fish, like rainbow trout, are often non-native species that disrupt ecosystems and crowd out local fish. What’s more, within the artificial, concrete-lined context of the hatchery, fish often acquire evolutionary traits (for example, large size at the expense of swimming ability) that are maladaptive once they’re released into the wild. When unfit hatchery trout mix their genes with wild populations, the result can be ecological chaos — like the titular “golden trout,” a bright orange, hatchery-bred novelty. Hatcheries, moreover, are merely the tip of the iceberg. In the name of improving conditions for (generally wealthy) anglers, humans have been altering rivers for more than a century. We’ve killed countless herons, cormorants, and other native predators; we’ve filled our waters with all manner of artificial structures to “improve habitat” (in the process permanently changing the contours and the function of our rivers); and our attempts to “restore” rivers to their former conditions are often misguided and ineffective. Part environmental history, part passionate cry for a saner system of river management, Thompson’s book will make any angler (myself included) reconsider their place within aquatic ecosystems.
