On this special podcast of "Behind the Mitten," co-host John Gonzalez checks in with good friend Paul Beachnau of the Gaylord Tourism Bureau about a two-day ice storm in Northern Michigan that has completely devasted the area. Thousands of people across the region remain without power in freezing weather, with some roads still blocked due to downed trees and powerlines. On Monday (March 31, 2025), Gov. Gretchen Whitmer declared a state of emergency for Otsego, Oscoda, Montmorency, Presque Isle, Emmet, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Crawford, Mackinac and Alpena counties in order to help with response and recovery efforts. Paul took time to talk to us after a day of helping neighbors clear debris.PHOTO: Eileen TusseyReleased by the Gaylord Tourism Bureau on April 1, 2025As you may know, Gaylord and much of northern Michigan was hit by an ice storm that started on March 29th. Most of our community has been without power since that time. If you plan to travel to the area in the next few weeks, please call ahead first to ensure you will have power and access to your lodging. There are many trees and powerlines down, but the amazing linemen and first responders are working tirelessly to restore everything. We appreciate their efforts more than words can say! Please bear with us as we work on clearing our roads and trails; the cleanup may take some time. We're optimistic that our community will come together, just like before, to reclaim Gaylord as the outdoor wonderland we all love. Thanks for your patience and support!

Welcome, dear listeners, to the final chapter of our journey alongside the three cheerful companions, and their beyond-civilized canine, Montmorency, in the enchanting tale of Three Men in a Boat. Hold on to your hearts as we embark together on this last stretch of their sojourn, that winds willingly through peculiar encounters, half-baked philosophies, and the simple joy of friendship.Chapter 19 finally brings us to Oxford, where the mischief of Montmorency brings unexpected delight to our weary voyagers. We follow the story of renting of a not-so-stately up-river boat which, despite its humble demeanour, fulfils its purpose faithfully. As the sunset fades into twilight, we follow their wavering pursuit of joy amidst a relentless drizzle. Their determination to find delight in the lukewarm embrace of cold veal pie gives us glimpses of their optimism, limited though it may be. Musical escapades ensue as George, in a brave display of emotional courage, delivers a gripping performance on his banjo, rendering the mundane themes of their experience into an emotionally raw melody despite his attempt at a comic song.We follow their eventual resignation to wet weather and damp spirits, their supposed unflinching resolve turning flaccid in the face of a comforting thought that possesses the potential to lead them to the warm confines of London. In the end, they do abandon ship, seeking much-needed reprieve in a sumptuous supper, tickets to a vibrant vaudeville, and finally, to a quiet toast in their familiar digs in their wind-tossed part of town.So sit back, relax, and let's dive into these final moments of our adventure, as our heroes choose the comfort of hearth and home over the allure of the river's song. We bid adieu to them on a rainy evening in London, their jests and laughter still echoing in our ears. Here's to the Three Men in a Boat, their dog, and a journey well taken.
Welcome to chapter 14, where we traverse a splendid patchwork of picturesque villages and stories of cheeky provocations, all under the ever elusive umbrella of leisure. Journey with us, as we ride the breeze through Wargrave and Shiplake.Enjoy, with us, the attempted rustling up of an Irish stew, fraught with the comedic dealings of too many potato peelings and Montmorency's dubious contribution. If this sounds mysterious, or downright perplexing, fear not, dear listener.Follow George's earnest aspirations of mastering the banjo and sympathize with his discouragement. Find delight in young Jefferson's bagpipe trials, a hopeful musician contending with not just the difficulty of mastering a peculiar instrument but the harsh symphony of societal expectations.Amidst it all, share in the companionship of George and our narrator, and learn of Harris' encounter with a flock of somewhat aggressive swans.
Our chapter opens in Marlow, that bustling, lively, river-side town, with our esteemed travellers - sweet-natured, mischief-prone Harris, considered and affable George, our ever-observant narrator, and that whirling dervish canine companion, Montmorency. We voyage through history, through crumbling stone walls hiding whispered secrets, and the idyllic country paths teeming with long-lost summers roaming in the fragrance of memory.Venture upstream towards Sonning and stand before the grandeur of Bisham Abbey, a relic of time, graced by the footsteps of Anne of Cleves, Queen Elizabeth, and the infamous Knights Templar. Jeremiah's delightful prose brings alive the spectral shadows of the Lady Holy and the striking figures of history that graced its halls.Weary from the day's exploits, we escape to Hurley Village, a time-frozen alcove where the whispers of a thousand years echo in your ears. Savour the enigma of the infamous Medmenham monks, known widely as the "Hell Fire Club." Explore an Abbey that promises a world of stern and strange, pious Cistercian monks cloaked in silence, and the curious, irreverent jesters who dared to disturb it centuries later.Explore the myriad faces of the delightful Montmorency as his mortal enmity with cats leads to more than one incident of hilarious tom-foolery. His antics are sure to leave you chortling in delight. And who can forget the escapade at the Civil Service Stores, where a fox-terrier brought forth a pandemonium that would make even the strongest crumble.Steer with us through breath-taking landscapes bathed in the golden light of sunset, and down to the sombre bareness that trails Henley. Discover a mirthless departure from Marlow, an impressive procession of man, beast, and some adorable drifters. Beware the steam launches, the bane of every rowing gentleman's existence, as our trio engages in a saga of exciting encounters.A chance consumption of river water, a sobering encounter with a peaceful dog, and a mysteriously disappearing Harris (along with that day's dinner), make sure that adventure never veers too far from our unsuspecting heroes.
Our intrepid early-risers George and narrator J., struggling with the curse of untimely awakenings and the hilarity that such unnecessary actions often lead to. Listen as we delve into a past event of George's, an innocent mistake of misreading time that spirals out into a dramatic escapade through the quiet hours of the morning, and how a simple mistake culminates in an amusing dilemma. As the day unfurls, we're transported right alongside the men and the vivacious Montmorency as they contemplate the chilly embrace of the morning river. Listen to the play-by-play of a shirt mishap, the anecdote of scrambled eggs, and the humorous incidents that mark the delightful charm of everyday life. But Chapter 11 is not just about humour and mishaps. It carries with it a profound and theatrical recounting of a defining moment in our proud English history. As the men lay by the banks of the river Thames, just by Magna Charta Island, you will find yourself echoing their awe as we take a dip into the England of the past, the England that witnessed the signing of the Magna Carta. From the small-town chronicles to the grand panorama of 1215, we journey together to a time of knights and kings, squires and serfs, liberty and confrontation. A stage set with meticulous care, where the fates of unborn ages were being decided and history was being etched into the sands of time.
This chapter begins with a grand discussion of whether our heroes should go bold and "camp out" or stay firmly within their comfort zones at local inns. Obviously, it's George and the narrator who are all for 'wilding it out' with nature. Harris, on the other hand, is decidedly practical, his idyllic visions rather more grounded, and not at all moved by the glorious panorama of poetry from our narrator. And then we witness their first stab at camping out, a glorious episode of chaos and comic miscommunication that leaves you in stitches as you visualize the scene. Several damp slices of bread and harsh words later, it's not surprising when the plan to 'wild out' is swiftly abandoned for the safer and drier comfort offered by inns and hotels. One figure who is perfectly thrilled with this new development is Montmorency, who far from being an angelic member of their group, apparently has a rich history of troublemaking escapades which leaves us questioning the sanity of the trio for even considering bringing him along. The whimsy and absurdity of their preparations are finally punctuated by the decision to adjourn for a night of 'a drop of Irish worth drinking,' because why not? They are about to embark on the most arduous journey of doing absolutely nothing in the most luxurious way... or least that's the plan.So stay tuned for the next podcast chapter of "Three Men in a Boat" to find out whether our shambolic trio manages to successfully execute their ambitious plan of a tranquil river journey, or spend their time tumbling from one delightfully comedic disaster to the next.
Welcome to our delightful exploration of Jerome K. Jerome's timeless classic, "Three Men in a Boat." Today, we delve into the opening chapter, where we are introduced to our three protagonists – George, William Samuel Harris, and the narrator himself. Alongside them is the ever-sardonic Montmorency, a fox terrier with a mind of his own.In this chapter, we embark on a humorous journey through the hypochondriac minds of our three men. Each convinced they are victims of countless fatal maladies - an amusing consequence of their excessive reading of patent medicine advertisements and self-diagnosis. Their shared belief in their ill-health leads them to conclude that they are overworked and in desperate need of rest.Their proposed solution? A week on the rolling deep! However, as they debate the merits and demerits of a sea voyage versus a quiet retreat in an old-world spot far from the madding crowd, George suggests an alternative – a river trip. The idea is met with enthusiasm by all but Montmorency, who seems less than thrilled about this boating adventure.Jerome's narrative shines with his characteristic wit and humour as he takes us through their lively discussion and eventual decision. It's a delightful satire on human nature's tendency to imagine worst-case scenarios and then seek drastic solutions for problems that may not even exist. So sit back, relax and join us as we set sail on this hilarious journey with our three men (and one dog) in a boat. It promises to be an engaging ride filled with laughter, insights into human folly and beautiful descriptions of England's picturesque River Thames. Let's dive into Chapter 1!

Deep in the Pacific Ocean, 350 miles off the coast of Central America sits a small, unimposing island, surrounded in natural beauty. One of the island's lesser known claims to fame is that its tropical climate and lost-world appearance were the original inspiration for Jurassic Park's fictional Isla Nublar. Better known, however, are the myths and legends that pertain to the hoards of pirate treasure, buried beneath the surface and lost for over two centuries. Hundreds, if not thousands, of expeditions have sailed to its isolated shores in the hope of uncovering the untold riches, with little to show for their efforts but the wild stories that have helped to continue the legend of the Lost Treasure of Lima for over two hundred years. Tom Hart, co-founder of Humboldt Cider is our guest on Brew Ha Ha with Harry Duke and Herlinda Heras, with special guest Peter Lopez. Peter is the founder of NorCal Beer Geeks and he also runs the Juncture Taproom in Santa Rosa. Tom Hart started Humboldt Cider in 2014 with his partner. They saw an opportunity for cider and started learning how to make it for local events in small batches. For a location , they renovated an old milking barn. Most recently, they started canning during the pandemic. This was an initially forced transformation of their business but it has worked well. First to be tasted is their Drysdale Cider, made with 4 different culinary apples, golden delicious, granny smith, fuji and gala. It classifies as a dry cider on the dryness scale. Juncture Taproom Juncture Taproom is celebrating its 6th anniversary. He has been planning this celebration for a long time. NorCal Beer Geeks and Humboldt Cider have made a collaboration called Sally's Jamaica. It is flavored with Jamaica flower like the refreshing Mexican beverage which is made from Hibiscus flowers. It makes a light and dry apple cider. They are bringing in all the musicians and food vendors who are with them all year too, for the celebration. Juncture Taproom is located at 4357 Montgomery Drive, at the corner of Mission. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Click the logo to visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more info. They are also tasting the Cherry cider, flavored with two kinds of cherries, Montmorency for tartness and Morello for color. This won gold at GLINTCAP, the Great Lakes International Cider Competition, which is the biggest cider competition in the country. It won despite their fear of heat damage before the tasting. Visit our sponsor Victory House at Poppy Bank Epicenter online, for their latest viewing and menu options. NorCal Beer Geeks collaborates with VetConnect, to help veterans with all kinds of personal services, including helping them navigate available services, because sometimes some veterans are not even aware that they are eligible for certain services. The last Humboldt Cider product tasted today is the Gravenstein Cider, made with fruit from old trees in northern California, which used to be more abundant, and which produce the best cider out there. Traverse City Whiskey Co. (TCWC) was started as both a hobby and a business by Chris Fredrickson and a couple of friends. They started as many do, by buying aged MGP and selling it while building their own distillery. A decade later, depending on the product, the MGP percentage is at 10%, or even lower. What they are buying from MGP - when they buy - is unaged distillate to their own specifications and needs. Their rye blends their own Michigan-distilled 100% rye with MGP's 95/5, for example. Traverse City is also the cherry capital of the world, something Chris knows as a third-generation cherry farmer. Montmorency, Balaton, sour or sweet, Chris and TCWC know their cherries. The cocktail cherries are an in-house recipe and the only cherries I use in my cocktails, and the annual Cherry Whiskeyfest they throw is not to be missed. The best part - my favorite part - of TCWC is that each product is for a different audience. The Barrel Proof whiskies aren't simply out-of-the-barrel versions of the lower proof ones; they're aged longer and in different parts of the warehouse. Their North Coast Rye is closer to a 50/50 mix of MGP and TCWC distillate, not a proofed-down Barrel Proof Rye. Targeting consumers is nothing new - targeting them in a way that differentiates you is. _________________ Before we jump into the interview just a few quick notes: If you haven't joined the Patreon community yet, please consider doing so! Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K. Jerome audiobook. Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog), published in 1889, is a humorous account by Jerome K. Jerome of a boating holiday on the Thames between Kingston and Oxford. The book was intended initially to be a serious travel guide, with accounts of local history of places along the route, but the humorous elements eventually took over, to the point where the serious and somewhat sentimental passages now seem like an unnecessary distraction to the essentially comic novel. One of the most praised things about Three Men in a Boat is how undated it appears to modern readers. The jokes seem fresh and witty even today. The three men were based on Jerome himself and two real-life friends, George, and Harris. The dog, Montmorency, however, was entirely fictional, but, as Jerome had remarked, "had much of me in it."

Can breast milk feed a love of vegetables? Chili peppers for a healthy gut: Spicy chemical may inhibit gut tumors University of California, San Diego August 1, 2022 Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine report that dietary capsaicin — the active ingredient in chili peppers — produces chronic activation of a receptor on cells lining the intestines of mice, triggering a reaction that ultimately reduces the risk of colorectal tumors. The receptor or ion channel, called TRPV1, was originally discovered in sensory neurons, where it acts as a sentinel for heat, acidity and spicy chemicals in the environment. TRPV1 was quickly described as a molecular ‘pain receptor.' But Raz and colleagues have found that TPRV1 is also expressed by epithelial cells of the intestines, where it is activated by epidermal growth factor receptor or EGFR. EGFR is an important driver of cell proliferation in the intestines, whose epithelial lining is replaced approximately every four to six days. “These results showed us that epithelial TRPV1 normally works as a tumor suppressor in the intestines,” said de Jong. In addition, molecular studies of human colorectal cancer samples recently uncovered multiple mutations in the TRPV1 gene, though Raz noted that currently there is no direct evidence that TRPV1 deficiency is a risk factor for colorectal cancer in humans. The current study suggests one potential remedy might be spicy capsaicin, which acts as an irritant in mammals, generating a burning sensation in contact with tissue. The researchers fed capsaicin to mice genetically prone to developing multiple tumors in the gastrointestinal tract. The treatment resulted in a reduced tumor burden and extended the lifespans of the mice by more than 30 percent. The treatment was even more effective when combined with celecoxib, a COX-2 non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug already approved for treating some forms of arthritis and pain. “Our data suggest that individuals at high risk of developing recurrent intestinal tumors may benefit from chronic TRPV1 activation,” said Raz. “We have provided proof-of-principle.” How Tart Cherries Reduce Inflammation and Oxidative StressNorthumbria University (UK), August 4, 2022Michigan researchers had previously shown that a cherry-enriched diet not only reduced overall body inflammation, but also reduced inflammation at key sites (belly fat, heart) known to affect heart disease risk in the obese. This study offers further promise that foods rich in antioxidants, such as cherries, could potentially reduce inflammation and have the potential to lower disease risk.” Two daily doses of the tart cherry concentrate was associated with significantly lower levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), compared to placebo, according to findings published in Nutrients. ”This is the first study to investigate the impact of cherries on systemic inflammatory and oxidative stress induced by a series of metabolically challenging cycling bouts. Despite both groups demonstrating a similar drop off in performance and no differences in time trial performance, the results show that both oxidative stress and inflammatory responses were attenuated with Montmorency cherry concentrate supplementation versus placebo.” ”With millions of Americans looking for ways to naturally manage pain, it's promising that tart cherries can help, without the possible side effects often associated with arthritis medications,” said Kerry Kuehl, M.D, Dr.PH., M.S., Oregon Health & Science University, principal study investigator. “I'm intrigued by the potential for a real food to offer such a powerful anti-inflammatory benefit — especially for active adults.” Darren E. Huxley, MD says that a natural alternatives to pain medications are proving effective without unwanted side effects. “In this case we have cherries, another potent, natural antioxidant proving to be as, if not more effective than pain medications because of the ability for sustained long-term use without side effects in common anti-inflammatory drugs.Tart cherries have also been shown to contain naturally high levels of melatonin, a key compound in the human sleep-and-wake cycle, and new research in the European Journal of Nutrition confirms that melatonin from tart cherries is absorbed by humans. In 2001, Burkhardt et al. even observed that the Montmorency variety, in particular, contains about six times more melatonin than the Balaton variety. Uncovering the links between diet, gut health and immunity University of Sydney, August 5, 2022 A preclinical study from the University of Sydney has found a high-protein diet can change the microbiota of the gut, triggering an immune response. Researchers say the study takes us a step closer to understanding the way diet impacts gut health and immunity. “The focus of our work is on how the gut microbiota—the trillions of bacteria that inhabit the gut—affects the immune system,” said Associate Professor Laurence Macia from the University's Charles Perkins Center and Faculty of Medicine and Health. Traditionally, however, scientists have focused on the role of dietary fiber in maintaining a healthy gut. In this first-of-its-kind study, published in Nature Communications, the team from the Charles Perkins Center used sophisticated modeling to explore the impact of 10 diets with a different makeup of macronutrients—protein, fats and carbohydrate in mice. Mice fed a high protein diet increased their production of bacterial extracellular vesicles, complex cargo containing bacterial information such as DNA and protein. The body subsequently viewed this activity as a threat and triggered a sequence of events where immune cells traveled into the gut wall. “Here we found protein had a huge impact on the gut microbiota and it was not so much about the type of bacteria that were there, but the type of activity. In essence, we discovered a new way of communication between the gut bacteria and the host which was mediated by protein,” said Associate Professor Macia. While it is too early to say if this research might translate in humans, the researchers say activation of the immune system can prove either good or bad news. “By increasing antibodies in the gut you may see strong protection against potential pathogens, for example salmonella, but on the downside, an activated immune system could mean you are at increased risk of colitis, an inflammatory bowel disease, or autoimmune conditions like Crohn's,” said lead author and post-doctoral researcher Jian Tan. The results appear consistent with the population impacts of modern-day diets, with the Western world seeing lower rates of gastrointestinal infection but higher rates of chronic disease. Southern-style diet ‘increases death risk' in kidney disease patients University of Alabama 1 August 2022 New research published in the National Kidney Foundation's American Journal of Kidney Diseases suggests that eating a “Southern-style diet” is linked with higher death rates in kidney disease patients. Investigating the influence of diet on kidney disease patients, the researchers studied 3,972 participants with stage 3-5 chronic kidney disease who had not started dialysis. Analyzing the dietary habits of the participants, the researchers found that those who regularly consumed foods familiar to Southern diets had a 50% increase in risk of death across the 6.5-year follow-up period. Foods that the authors identify as being part of a Southern diet include processed and fried foods, organ meats and sweetened beverages. Could Hibiscus Tea be Better than High Blood Pressure Drugs? Tufts University, August 4th, 2022 Naturally healing foods, including hibiscus, don't carry the side effects of pharmaceuticals and can often offer similar (or better) benefits, without padding the pockets of Big Pharma companies. This is one example of a natural solution for high blood pressure. When it comes to high blood pressure, a completely preventable condition, there are many natural solutions. Things like cayenne pepper, apple cider vinegar, and celery are just a few alternatives, along with broad dietary and lifestyle changes. But many people aren't aware of the blood pressure lowering benefits of hibiscus. Dr. Diane McKay presented her own research on hibiscus Dr. McKay, of Tufts University, conducted a study on 65 people between the ages of 30 and 70 who had been diagnosed with prehypertension or mild hypertension. After receiving hibiscus tea daily for six weeks, participants experienced reduced diastolic, systolic, and mean arterial pressures when compared with those who received a placebo. The effects were most pronounced in those with the highest beginning baseline blood pressures. In another study, scientists received a surprise when looking at the effects of hibiscus tea on blood sugar. The study compared the effects of hibiscus and black teas and found that both impacted cholesterol levels. While the black tea positively influenced HDL levels, hibiscus tea helped keep LDL, HDL, and overall cholesterol at healthy levels. Can breast milk feed a love of vegetables? Monell Chemical Senses Center, August 4, 2022 Want your preschooler to eat veggies without a fuss? Try eating veggies while you're breast-feeding. That's the message from a new study of lactating mothers and their breast-fed babies. The study found that those infants who took in veggie-flavored breast-milk were less likely to turn away from similar-tasting cereal when they graduated to more solid food. “Every baby's sensory experience is unique, but the flavor of their first food, beginning in utero, is dependent on what mom is eating,” said Julie Mennella. She is a biopsychologist at the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia, and led the study. “The way I see it is: Mother's milk is the ultimate in precision medicine,” Mennella said. When an expectant mother eats vegetables, they flavor her amniotic fluid—and later, her breast-milk—and those flavors get passed along to her baby. As a result, the researchers said, if the baby learns early how veggies taste, he or she will be less apt to squawk when offered that first spoonful. For her study, Mennella randomly assigned 97 breast-feeding mothers to one of five groups. For a month, three groups drank a half-cup of carrot, celery, beet or vegetable juice before nursing. One group began when babies were two weeks old, another at 1-1/2 months of age and the third at 2-1/2 months. A fourth group of moms drank juice for three months, starting when their babies were two weeks old. A fifth group—the “control” group—did not use juice. The takeaway: Babies who'd been exposed to vegetable flavors in breast-milk preferred carrot-flavored cereal over plain cereal or cereal with the unfamiliar taste of broccoli. Only 8 percent rejected all of the foods, the findings showed.

Chili peppers for a healthy gut: Spicy chemical may inhibit gut tumors University of California, San Diego April 14, 2022 Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine report that dietary capsaicin -- the active ingredient in chili peppers -- produces chronic activation of a receptor on cells lining the intestines of mice, triggering a reaction that ultimately reduces the risk of colorectal tumors. The receptor or ion channel, called TRPV1, was originally discovered in sensory neurons, where it acts as a sentinel for heat, acidity and spicy chemicals in the environment. "These are all potentially harmful stimuli to cells," said Eyal Raz, MD, senior author of the study. "Thus, TRPV1 was quickly described as a molecular 'pain receptor.' But Raz and colleagues have found that TPRV1 is also expressed by epithelial cells of the intestines, where it is activated by epidermal growth factor receptor or EGFR. EGFR is an important driver of cell proliferation in the intestines, whose epithelial lining is replaced approximately every four to six days. The scientists discovered that TRPV1, once activated by the EGFR, initiates a direct negative feedback on the EGFR, dampening the latter to reduce the risk of unwanted growth and intestinal tumor development. They found that mice genetically modified to be TRPV1-deficient suffered higher-than-normal rates of intestinal tumor growths. The researchers fed capsaicin to mice genetically prone to developing multiple tumors in the gastrointestinal tract. The treatment resulted in a reduced tumor burden and extended the lifespans of the mice by more than 30 percent. This study offers further promise that foods rich in antioxidants, such as cherries, could potentially reduce inflammation and have the potential to lower disease risk. (NEXT) Water outperforms sports drinks for young athletes Penn State University, April 14, 2022 Most youngsters don't exert themselves at an intensity or duration that requires the extra sugar and salt contained in sports drinks. Sports drinks can replenish some of what you lost during exercise, but you really need to be exercising for more than 45 minutes to an hour before you would consider that. Many of our kids are not doing enough to warrant it. Energy drinks that contain caffeine or other stimulants are also ill-advised for children, the physicians said. These beverages can boost blood pressure, cause heart palpitations and heart rhythm disorders, headaches and upset stomach. Coaches and parents should provide water to make sure children are properly hydrated during exercise, the doctors said. (NEXT) Ginger Found to Reduce Premenstrual Pain and Mood Symptoms Tehran University of Medical Sciences, April 17, 2022 New research has confirmed other findings that ginger root (Zingiber officinale) can relieve premenstrual pain and associated symptoms, without some of the side effects associated with NSAIDs. Medical doctors from the Tehran University of Medical Sciences in Iran studied 70 female students between 18 and 35 years old in a three-month long double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. The women had regular menstruation cycles and were not taking medications, but they each had at least five symptoms of PMS during their normal cycles. Both groups' PMS symptom severity scores were calculated before and after each of the three months. The researchers found that while both groups averaged between 106 and 110 points on the PMS severity testing at the beginning of the study, the ginger group scored significantly lower on all PMS symptoms at the end of each month. After one month, the ginger group's scores averaged 51, while the placebo group averaged 105.7. After three months, the ginger group's scores averaged 49 while the placebo group averaged 107. After the third month, the ginger group's scores average 47 while the placebo group averaged 106. (SUPERFOODS) Oranges: The orange is a vitamin and mineral-packed treasure chest of a fruit, rich in vitamins A, B and C, potassium, and calcium, as well as being an excellent source of fiber. One phytonutrient in oranges that boosts it into the super food category is the flavonoid hesperidin. This biochemical works to support healthy blood vessels and reduces cholesterol. What has been established so far overlooks what the public considers the orange's defining health trait, it being stocked with vitamin C, an important antioxidant that limits free radicals while also building the immune system. Vitamin C's healing properties are well known and have been repeatedly scientifically validated. These include the lessening of arterial plaque as well as protecting from Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Crohn's diseases, arthritis, and diabetes.
President Emmanuel Macron is the clear favorite in France's presidential race, yet a big unknown factor may prove decisive: an unprecedented proportion of people say they are unsure who to vote for or don't intend to vote at all, bringing a large dose of uncertainty to the election. The pro-European centrist is still comfortably leading 11 other candidates in the polls ahead of Sunday's first-round vote. His main challenger, far-right leader Marine Le Pen, appears on the rise in recent days. Both are in good position to reach the runoff on April 24, which would make them replay the 2017 election that Macron won handily. There's “no certainty,” Macron warned during his first big rally on Saturday near Paris.“Don't believe in polls or commentators who would sound definitive and tell you that ... the election is already done, that everything is going to be all right,” he told his supporters. “From Brexit to so many elections, what seems unlikely can happen!”Scenarios for the this year's second-round vote show that Le Pen has significantly narrowed the gap with Macron compared to 2017 — when she lost with 34% support to his 66%.Polls still place her behind Macron, but much closer, apparently showing the wisdom of her longstanding strategy to soften her rhetoric and image — allowing her to capture the anti-Macron vote as well as far-right support. In recent days, Macron's campaign has also hit a speed bump dubbed “the McKinsey Affair,” named after an American consulting company hired to advise the French government on its COVID-19 vaccination campaign and other policies. A new French Senate report questions the government's use of private consultants and accuses McKinsey of tax dodging. Financial prosecutors announced Wednesday that a preliminary investigation has been opened into suspected tax fraud. The issue is energizing Macron's rivals and dogging him at campaign stops. Many in Macron's camp fear that his supporters may not go to polling stations because they already think he will win, while those angry at his policies will make sure to vote.“Of course I have concerns,” said Julien Descamps, a 28-year-old member of Macron's party, stressing that some people in his circle “don't know what to do.”“They are not fully convinced by Macron, but if they reject the extremes, they should vote for him,” he said.Macron called on voters to get mobilized against both France's far-right and the far-left. “Don't boo them, fight their ideas,” he said.In third position according to the polls is far-left figure Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who has increased his support but still is a distance behind Le Pen. Another far-right candidate, Eric Zemmour, and conservative contender Valérie Pécresse are amid other key challengers. Sunday's first round will qualify the two top candidates for the runoff. The presidential election is the one that attracts French voters the most.Yet the turnout has decreased from 84% in 2007 to about 78% in 2017, and studies show that abstention may be higher than five years ago. In particular, young and working-class people appear less certain to go to the polls than retirees and upper-class voters.A low turnout could have a major impact on the vote, pollsters say. They note that a greater proportion of people don't know yet for whom they will vote — or whether they will vote at all. That's the situation of managing assistant Liza Garnier, 45, who lives in the wealthy suburb of Montmorency, north of Paris.“I don't believe in what politicians say anymore. They make a lot of promises, they say candidates' words, and once in power, we are disappointed,” she said. “I get the impression that more and more people think it's useless: voting for who? For what?”Garnier feels politicians are too far away from the reality of French daily life. She said she may just pick a blank vote, even in the second round if Macron is facing Le Pen.“I want to show I'm not happy with it,” she said. The sinking purchasing power of Frenc...

Greg Patent makes the most of tart cherry season by preserving as much of the fruit as he can while setting aside cherries for this recipe. "Fresh sour pie cherries are as precious as rubies," Greg writes. "Bright and shiny like the gems they resemble, the sour Montmorency cherries have a short season (only 2 to 3 weeks in July) in western Montana, so I always pick some off a neighbor's tree to use fresh and enough to freeze."

A common cause of yellowing leaves in maples and other trees. Fresh Sweet Cherry Cream Cheese Pastry 8 Oz softened cream cheese 1/3 cup granulated sugar 2 tablespoons flour 1 teaspoon almond extract 1 ½ cups pitted sweet or Montmorency tart cherries 1 egg beaten for egg wash Powdered sugar Directions: Preheat oven to 400 F Beat cream cheese, granulated sugar, flour, almond extract, and egg yolk together until smooth and spreadable. Set aside. Unfold a sheet of puff pastry onto a large piece of parchment paper. Along the edges of the puff pastry sheet, cut strips ½ inch wide 1/3 of the way into the center. Transfer the pastry and parchment paper to a large baking sheet. Spread the cream cheese down the center of the puff pastry being careful to keep it away from the cut edges. Top the cream cheese mixture with chopped cherries, pushing them down slightly into the mixture. Rotate the pan so that the cut strips are on your left and right. Starting at the top, bring the cut strips towards the center at a slight right angle over the filling. Alternate the left and right sides. Overlap the strips and press down gently as you go. When all of the strips have been folded down, brush the entire pastry with egg wash. Bake for 20-25 minutes until puffed and golden brown. Let it cool slightly and dust with powdered sugar.
