Is this March 2020? No, it is July and the 2020/21 school year will be starting soon for many around the world. Yet, there is a strong sense of Deja Vu as more and more districts and counties announce going fully remote for the unforeseeable future. How do we, as educators and parents, cope with all this uncertainty? In this episode, we talk about planning with portability in mind and design thinking. We share ideas for working together and getting creative once we know our constraints.
“Personalized learning.” We hear and use this phrase all.the.time. Technology amplifies the possibilities of individualizing our experiences, making our preferences customizable, and offering a mind-boggling amount of apps, devices, tools, and platforms aimed at meeting every plausible need. Sure, these variables allow for an almost infinite amount of combinations ensuring that everyone can get what they want and need...BUT...they also create a huge overwhelm. How do we choose with ALL those choices?Where do we start? How do we know what the right choice is? How do we answer the infamous “everyone else gets to play (fill in the blank) -- why can’t I?” question? As parents, we want to support our children’s interests while keeping their safety and education in mind. As educators, we want -- well, we want the same.Resource:http://tpack.org/
Here are some of the resources/strategies we shared that work for us:5–2–5 BreathingNever underestimate the power of breath, especially when working with kids and adults. Take a deep breath in for 5 seconds, hold it for 2, and then breathe out deeply for 5 seconds. Repeat. Taking a deep breath like this allows us to create a sustained calm and lowers anxiety.Thank you to Kristy Andre for sharing! Mindfulness cards (Amazon) Note: We are not affiliated with this product and we do not receive any incentives (financial or otherwise) for this or anything else we share.Mood Meter AppJay Shetty, a former monk turned storyteller, encourages us to “spot, stop, and swap” negative thoughts and you can see that this is actually a cycle of inquiry for regulating emotions.
