"That injury was one of the most psychologically harrowing experiences of my career, just figuring out how to navigate that space, how to eventually see it as a superpower … if I hadn't gotten that injury, I wouldn't have been able to rebuild my body in a way that allowed me to come back a completely different athlete. I think because of all the work I had to do in the gym to address things I had never addressed my entire career, coming off of that gave me longevity."   Elite runner Laura Thweatt had a lengthy career at the top level of the sport—while running for Saucony for more than a decade, the 2:25 marathoner finished fifth in the 2020 Olympic Marathon Trials, earned three US cross country titles, and made five US teams.   But she also had many injuries, including osteitis pubis, a painful inflammation in the joint between the pubic bones. Recovery was long and difficult, but ultimately remade her as an athlete. That journey—along with other setbacks she's faced—taught her about standing up for herself, adjusting training to her needs, and practicing patience in the process.   Now, she's retired and embarking on the next phase of her career, coaching other pro runners (including New York City Marathon champion Hellen Obiri) with the On Athletics Club in Boulder. Her experiences give her credibility and competence with her athletes, helping her create a space for them to navigate injury and thrive. Looking back, she's grateful for all she went through, knowing that it brought her to a place where she can still play an important role in the sport and its future.   Resources/links: Laura's Instagram Why Do I Keep Getting Injured? Anonymity in workplace investigations is a double-edged sword: it can protect whistleblowers but also complicate investigations and fairness. In the recording of our recent IFSEA webinar, we were joined by: - Rachida el Johari, Sagiure Legal, Amsterdam - Mathilde Houet Weil, Weil & Associés, Paris - Colleen Cleary, Simmons & Simmons, Dublin - Andrew Pavlovic, CM Murray LLP, London - Emma Bartlett, CM Murray LLP, London (Chair) The key highlights covered in this webinar include: Jurisdictional Differences: - In Ireland, anonymous complaints may not require action, risking procedural issues. - In France, anonymous statements are allowed but must be supported by other evidence; cultural sensitivities are significant. - In the UK, anonymous complaints are accepted if detailed, but pose evidentiary challenges. The Netherlands emphasises fair trial rights, making anonymous reporting complex. Investigator & Regulator Challenges: - Anonymous reports protect identities but make evidence gathering and transparency harder. Regulators like the SRA and BSB struggle to act on such complaints. Practical Guidance: - Investigators should build trust, follow clear protocols, and explain the process to all parties. Policies should discourage anonymity where possible, ensuring fair hearings and due process. Bystander Role: - Employees must be empowered to report misconduct, with clear escalation routes and cultural support. - Organisations should review their investigation policies to balance confidentiality, fairness, and legal compliance. If you have any questions relating to this recording or if you would like discuss work place investigations in further detail, please contact Partners Emma Bartlett or Andrew Pavlovic.

Welcome to a special edition of Experiencing Data. This episode is the audio capture from a live Crowdcast video webinar I gave on April 26th, 2024 where I conducted a mini UI/UX design audit of a new podcast analytics service that Chris Hill, CEO of Humblepod, is working on to help podcast hosts grow their show. Humblepod is also the team-behind-the-scenes of Experiencing Data, and Chris had asked me to take a look at his new “Listener Lifecycle” tool to see if we could find ways to improve the UX and visualizations in the tool, how we might productize this MVP in the future, and how improving the tool's design might help Chris help his prospective podcast clients learn how their listener data could help them grow their listenership and “true fans.” On a personal note, it was fun to talk to Chris on the show given we speak every week:  Humblepod has been my trusted resource for audio mixing, transcription, and show note summarizing for probably over 100 of the most recent episodes of Experiencing Data. It was also fun to do a “live recording” with an audience—and we did answer questions in the full video version. On 5th March, Innovation Forum and Bayer Crop Science hosted a webinar exploring the best practices for soil regeneration At the root of some of the most urgent challenges facing agriculture today is the global threat to soil health. Challenges such as soil erosion, compaction, salinization and water retention are compounded by the impacts of the evolving climate crisis, threatening the resilience of global food systems.     Maximising soil health can lock in carbon to mitigate climate change and provide various benefits to growers and ecosystems - such as soil resilience, improving profitability, biodiversity, crop yield and nutrition.   As land stewards, farmers can regenerate soils through the adoption of carbon farming practices. But what are the correct practices to ensure maximum carbon sequestration, emissions reduction and regenerative outcomes? And how can we ensure the significant value-chain support needed to enable this?   In this webinar, our panel drew on case studies to identify practical and impactful farmer-centric solutions for building the relationship between healthy soils, regenerative agriculture, and climate-resilient food systems at scale.   They discussed: The practices, such as cover cropping, crop rotation and no-till, which can help to restore soil organic matter and sequester and/or reduce carbon.   The importance of taking a nuanced and context-specific approach to applying sustainable practices.    The technology and data tools available to develop, nurture and maintain healthy soils    The role of different value-chain actors in supporting continued innovation and scale  The panel: Florence Braye-Rigel, EMEA Carbon Farming Agronomic Lead, Bayer Crop Science  Paul Luu, Executive Secretary, The International “4 per 1,000” Initiative  Antoine Bedel, Forage and Service Plants Expert, RAGT  Andrew Williamson, Farmer  Moderator: Toby Webb, founder, Innovation Forum

Video and more Presented by Nick Katko Lean is a long-term business strategy, primarily focusing on employees and learning. Through various continuous improvement practices, employees learn to master their work, solve the right problems and help an organization learn how to do things tomorrow it cannot do today. The operational impact of continuous improvement is well known. Eliminating waste creates capacity, which can be used to serve customers better, improve productivity and improve employee satisfaction. But what about the financial impact? Oftentimes conventional financial analytical practices do not capture the true financial benefits of continuous improvement. This becomes a “problem to be solved.” This webinar will explain how to make the true cause-effect relationships between continuous improvement and financial improvement visible throughout the organization. Integrating these relationships will improve the quality of business decision-making and leverage continuous improvement for financial success for the entire organization. In this webinar, you will learn: the numbers to establish the true cause-effect relationships between continuous improvement and financial improvement. how to use the economics of lean to calculate the financial benefit of continuous improvement how continuous improvement achieves cost reduction over time why certain conventional financial analyses can show that continuous improvement is “not working” financially Nick is the President and owner of BMA. Since 2002, Nick has leveraged his Lean Accounting experience and philosophy in assisting BMA clients in developing, leading, and coaching them in their Lean Accounting transformations. Clients Nick has served a range of organizations worldwide, from family-owned businesses to multi-national companies in industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, software, engineering, and service.
