In this episode we look at the book Pass the Baton. Theresa Hoover is a music educator, speaker, and writer. She is an advocate for student voice in the music room and works to empower students throughout their musical experiences while helping teachers transform their classrooms into student-centered learning environments.Currently, Theresa teaches middle school band in Northern Virginia, opening a brand new middle school in 2019. Prior to moving to Virginia in 2016, she taught instrumental, general, and vocal music in a variety of settings in Pennsylvania for 13 years. She holds a bachelor's degree in music education from Penn State University and a master's degree in wind conducting from West Chester University, both in Pennsylvania.Theresa is a recognized presenter and clinician at conferences at the local, regional, and national level including the International Music Education Summit, the Virginia Society for Technology in Education, and several state music education conferences. She is a Google for Education Certified Trainer and was selected as a member of the Google Certified Innovator program, participating in the London 2019 cohort.In addition to her school teaching, Theresa was the founding director of the Chester County Youth Wind Ensemble and currently serves on the staff of the Virginia Winds Academy. He introduced and developed a successful Computing curriculum at KS3 through to A-level, co-ordinated the implementation of IT within a new build and introduced and implemented the use of G-Suite for Education across his school. Lawrence was able to forge excellent relationships with students, staff and parents as a pastoral lead, which is where he honed his ability to engage others.   Lawrence left classroom teaching four years ago to take up an exciting IT consultancy role supporting schools with the use and development of G-suite for education, e-safety and general Edtech. As a Google for Education Certified Trainer and Innovator, he regularly delivers PD to Educators and to those beginning their own EdTech journey. Lawrence has presented at BET twice, in 2019 on Google's Applied Digital Skills and in 2020 he led a wellbeing session ‘Solve for Happiness'.   Lawrence has a wide outreach, delivering PD sessions to Educators and their students both domestically and internationally in countries such as Sweden, Switzerland, Iceland, and Qatar. He enjoys problem-solving with different institutions, drawing on his rich and varied experiences from the classroom, as a school leader and now EdTech consultant. He is a knowledgeable, energetic, and engaging facilitator, able to motivate students and other educators to utilize the power of digital skills in the curriculum.   Lawrence uses his voice in the EdTech training community to champion diversity and inclusion. He believes that everyone should be able to have a seat at the table and works to create accessible high-quality training and opportunities for others. In 2020 he created and led an exciting mentoring program sponsored by Google Applied Digital Skills for 35 Black and Asian Educators to become certified Google Trainers, the first cohort is on track to become fully certified by July 2021. Due to the success of this program, the first of its kind, Lawrence has launched another mentoring program in partnership with Google for Education UK that provides opportunities for an even broader range of underrepresented Educators in the UK  and Ireland called the Inclusive Google Trainer community.    In addition to his EdTech roles, Lawrence has a social enterprise called Just A Guy Foundation which works with disengaged and disadvantaged students. They provide a range of assemblies, mentoring, and workshops to support young people in driving their own social mobility. She is a Google for Education Certified Trainer and was selected as a member of the Google Certified Innovator program, participating in the London 2019 cohort.  In addition to her school teaching, Theresa served as the founding director of the Chester County Youth Wind Ensemble and is currently on staff of the Virginia Winds Academy. Tourist opportunity: where to enjoy an afternoon, historical locations, etc. Google Teacher Podcast Mailbag Laura Cahill (Massachusetts) - I couldn't listen to this episode fast enough because the ISTE Standards have become such a driving force in my work as an edtech coach! After going through the ISTE certification process with my team (the Instructional Technology and Digital Learning Department in the Worcester Public Schools in Massachusetts), we quickly realized what an amazing framework the ISTE Standards would be for powerful teaching and learning. One way we started to use them to support students and teachers was by creating a crosswalk document between our state DLCS standards and the ISTE student standards. This has been huge in terms of helping our teachers see the bigger goal of creating "Empowered Learners" which we all agreed is the overarching goal and the standard that all of the other lead toward. Now, when planning PD for teachers, we use the ISTE Educator Standards to guide us and have started to educate our principals in them so they know what to look for in classrooms. Jennifer Lotze is the Instructional Technology Coordinator for the Hudson School District. She previously served as an Instructional Technology Trainer in the Sheboygan Area School District and an Educational Consultant at CESA 11. During her teaching career, she worked as a Cross Categorical Special Educator and focused on teaching individuals with disabilities how to use technology to be successful in their everyday lives. Within her special education program, she helped her students to create a successful business within the school environment. She is a Google for Education Certified Trainer and works with educational professionals all over the country as they integrate technology into their learning environments. She presents to help individuals get the most out of the technology they have access to and make accommodations to existing technology for use with all students. She received her Masters Degree from Carthage College in the area of Educational Leadership with an emphasis in Assistive Technology. Not only my conversation with Jennifer real on so many levels for both of us, there is such a spirit of support couched within the reality of leading as a woman in spaces often held by men. Pick a weather app. Go into settings and educate yourself on how to turn it on for “always allow” if that is your choice. Understand that location-based services can be used to track where you are, so if you choose not to allow any location-based services, then, make sure you know how to turn it on while traveling or when weather is bad. As always, consult with your wireless carrier about your data plan and educate yourself on the apps you use. Set your privacy settings with intentionality and be safe! Classroom 2.0 LIVE webinar "Building Efficiency with Google Forms" with special guest presenter, Jenn Judkins, August 19, 2017. There are so many awesome things we can do with Google Forms in our classrooms, and we are really excited to have Jennifer Judkins, a Google guru, joining us as our special guest presenter for this webinar to share some possibilities you may not have realized. Webinar description: Learn how to reduce inefficient, paper-based workflows using Google Forms and Add-Ons so more time can be spent doing value-added work with kids. In this session, we will highlight the use of the formMule and formRanger Add-Ons by creating a basic discipline referral system. In the example workflow we will demonstrate how teachers can use Google Forms to report student behavior issues, which will then trigger automatic email notification to school administrators. After the administrators follow up on the reported incident, Google Forms can ensure teachers are kept in the loop about any consequences through by automatic email update sent to the referring staff member. Jennifer Judkins is the Director of Educational Technology for Lexington Public Schools in Massachusetts. She is an experienced middle and high school science teacher, and former life science researcher, who knows first-hand how technology can extend learning and engage students in ways that challenge them to higher levels of thinking. Jenn is a Google for Education Certified Trainer, Raspberry Pi Certified Educator, 2016 MassCUE Pathfinder, PBS Lead Digital Innovator. As regular presenter at regional and national conferences, Jenn shares her passion for meaningful integration of digital tools by helping teachers gain confidence and proficiency in their use of technology.
