Have you ever felt like there was something in regards to your health that just had a hold on you? Like no matter how hard you tried to let it go, you just couldn't? Do you wonder if you'll ever be able to actually do the thing you want to do and stop doing the thing you don't want to do? For example, I have a history of sneaking into the pantry while my kids are playing and eating all of their chocolate from various holidays throughout the year. I can't seem to help myself. When it's there, it's like it's calling my name. I've also been known to watch TV for hours on end, obsessing over when the newest episodes are coming out so that I can somehow escape my own reality in exchange for the one portrayed so unrealistically on that screen. Doing those things was not even ever the worst part for me. It was worse when I knew I didn't want to be doing it, when I tried so hard to stop but gave in and gave up. I found myself falling into a cycle of shame and guilt, knowing I should be able to do better and not being able to. But, even after experiencing it over and over I still didn't know what to do. I didn't know how to break the cycle. And God. Today I'm sharing some personal testimony and walking through what it looks like to invite God into the moments of struggle, the moments of doing what you know you don't want to do and feeling that shame. Then I'm going to share a process you can use to discover and break free from the things you feel are holding back in your health or keeping you stuck in this cycle of shame. This is definitely a truth in love episode on a topic that is near and dear to my heart and a theme of my health story. As Mark recounts the miracle Jesus performs on her behalf, he describes this woman's faith to reach for Him. Hearing their desperate cries, Jesus silences the storm and turns His attention to His fearful followers. "Then He asked them, 'Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?'" (Mark 4:40).Jesus' decision to enter into this storm with His disciples was not an accident, but instead a brilliant opportunity to help them see that their fear was rooted in not yet understanding who He really was and how much He loved them. So, why are you so afraid? Just like with His disciples, God continues to intentionally orchestrate the circumstances and storms of your life to cause you to come face to face with your need to really know and experience Him. The storms you are facing are of immeasurable worth because they allow all fears and false beliefs to be revealed, so that God can remove them and replace them with a deeper understanding of His great love and power. This ONE THING has people upset with me…OFTEN. Can you guess what it is?
If you understand THIS ONE THING, it can radically improve your life. Don't hang on to pain— it is in the past. Just Let Go. Here's a story to illustrate that -One day, there were two monks walking a path. They came to a stream where there was a noblewoman looking to cross, but with no way of doing so. The monks were not allowed to touch a woman, yet the older monk picked the woman up and carried her across the stream, put her down, and walked on. The younger monk, scandalized, was beside himself that the older monk had broken his vows. After a while, he finally asked, “Why did you touch that woman? You're going to get kicked out of the order!” The elder monk, who was wiser, more awake, and more enlightened, replied, “I put that woman down hours ago, why are you still carrying her?”This story is not a Dr. Cheryl original, it's a well-known Buddhist parable, but it serves to show us exactly what happens when we refuse to let go and live in the present. Today, I'm sharing the second part of a talk I gave at a silent meditation retreat a few weeks ago in December 2021. The retreat was centered around the themes of: How can we replenish? How can we heal? How can we let go of what's hurting us? I'm excited to share this with my listeners as a lesson and a reminder that happiness in your love, relationships, and sexuality goes hand in hand with being happier, healthier, and free of suffering in your everyday lives.
