How hitting rock bottom can actually be the BEST thing for you! Welcome to the Shining Souls podcast! In this episode, I share my 2 most recent rock bottom experiences. The first in January/February 2019 when I had to have not one but two discectomy's. When the universe wants you to learn a lesson, it's best to pay attention and learn it as early as possible. But what happens when we ignore the lessons? What happens when you ignore your calling/passion or direction from the divine? Rock bottom...that is what can happen. My second rock bottom happened late 2020/early 2021. Ignoring my soul's calling and settling for a shadow career. It was like a slap in the face. Imagine my surprise when as soon as I acknowledged the lesson, things got better and keep getting better and better. The best is truly yet to come! Challenge creates change and change is uncomfortable. We grow up thinking we have to “fall in line” with what our parents, grandparents believe...then as we get older we think we can only be friends with people that are like us...love & marry someone who believes the same as we do. In an effort to keep the peace as children we do as we’re told and follow the rules...then that becomes the way we live out our life. What happens when we realize that our beliefs are NOT our own? Do we have the courage to fall out of line? Will our family and friends still love and accept us? My husband and I were discussing the pandemic and potential mandated next steps ...whether or not we agreed with these "next steps". It turns out, we have a different point of views. I share my thoughts on what happens when our beliefs change as well as my opinion on why we feel disappointed when someone we've known "forever" shares a belief different than our own. I hope that this episode encourages and inspires you to stand in your beliefs, and most of all, be open to others beliefs, especially when they are different than yours. This Podcast Is Episode Number 0376, And It's About Brace Your Construction Business From Recession The pains caused by an economic downturn can be excruciating, which is why most of us dread it. A recession can mean massive layoffs, jobs becoming harder to find, and wages frozen, which means consumers hunker down and spend less-- often worsening the slowdown unknowingly. For most businesses, especially small businesses, recessions can be brutal. Just take, for example, the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) that struck the world in 2008. Between December 2008 and December 2010, approximately 1.8 million small businesses shut down. When Investopedia looked into the financial crisis's impact on small businesses after a decade, they found out that business creation has not yet returned to pre-crisis levels. As the battle against COVID-19 is far from over, global financial markets have been impacted, consumers are tightening their belts, and global demand is falling. All these signs point to one thing: the next economic downturn may be right around the corner. Don't get us wrong; we are not here to scare you. Our hope is for you to build a successful, future-proof construction business. That means you need to be aware of the possibility of another recession so you can prepare adequately. Stay Close to Your Numbers Without a crystal clear picture of your business' financial health, you will not create an effective strategy that will help you weather this significant business challenge. By making an effort to understand your financials, including your revenue, expenses, profits, and cash flow numbers, you will be able to plan accordingly. Check-in with us and we'll help you review your cashflow forecasts. These forecasts will help you conduct best, moderate, and worst-case scenario planning. Doing this will help you make sound business decisions based on updated financial data, rather than being driven by emotion, intuition, or just guessing! Improve Your Cash Flow Cash flow is the lifeblood of your construction business, and ideally, you should be bringing in more income than the amount you are spending to sustain your business. However, before you can improve your cash flow, you must first ensure that you have accurate financial records and an effective accounting system. Once you have these sorted out, it will be easier for you to control your cash position through: Payments from clients-- timely invoicing, chasing debts, and offering to restructure overdue payments Reducing your expenses by reviewing software subscriptions, renegotiating terms with your suppliers and lenders Secure financing from government stimulus funds, take on investors or get short-term financing. However, if you are thinking about incurring debt during a recession, we would recommend consulting with your accountant or financial advisor first. Make extra effort in nurturing your relationship with existing customers Enhance your products and services Maintaining, Or Even Better, Growing Your Client Base If you want your business to thrive during a recession, you likely need to grow your client base. One way to do this is by digging deeper into your target market and coming up with ways to tweak your offers to entice them to hire your services even during severe economic conditions. You should also research your competitors, identify your point of difference, and plan how you will communicate those selling points to interested customers. We understand that getting more clients during a time like this is easier said than done, but what many business owners fail to realize is the fact that their existing customers are often their best opportunity to make more sales. Keep your clients happy, identify how you can add more value to their lives, and reach out to them to take advantage of untapped sales opportunities. Focus On Your Strengths The concept of "diversification" is usually taken in the wrong way. Merely adding a host of different products and services to your offerings will not magically transform your construction business. It may be a waste of time and resources and stop you from focusing on the things you do best. During an economic downturn, you should re-evaluate your existing services, and focus on your key strengths or core competencies. Improve Your Marketing Efforts One of the most common construction business owners' mistakes is that whenever they need to minimize their expenses, they automatically cut their marketing budget or even re-allocate it entirely. Marketing and sales go hand-in-hand. So if you want to keep a healthy flow of sales coming in, you need to have strong marketing. In today's fast-paced world where consumers are restless, they will become even more careful in their buying decisions. Marketing is your tool to help them find and see your services as the best options. So instead of quitting marketing, now is the right time to step up your marketing efforts. Don't Be Afraid to Play Offense Those who go full survival mode and limp through the economic downturn will be much slower to recover and have a lower chance of catching up. Secure your cash reserves and know when is the right time to play offense. Think about ways to innovate your services, streamline your operations to boost efficiencies, expand your market share by improving your offerings to be ten times better than your competition, and consider mergers and acquisitions. There is No Fool-Proof Way There is no specific strategy that will make your business 100% recession-proof, but these tips will make a difference in navigating through these difficult times. In the business world, ups and downs are normal, and growth stalls are inevitable due to cyclical reasons. Thriving in a recession boils down to having exceptional industry expertise, getting better business visibility, implementing efficient processes and best practices, and having a business advisor who can provide you with expert guidance, fresh insights, and timely advice. Yet, somewhere along the journey, many people think, “I shouldn’t have to change… I am fine just the way I am.In fact, you should change…” And this sentiment is the first step down a slippery path to a bumpy road.Change is growth. Changing ourselves is fundamental to our growth, spiritually, physically, mentally, and creatively. And re-writing our narrative to name change as growth can be a powerful transformation, allowing us to embrace change as part of our lives. I want to discuss 6 areas of change to break through stagnancy and inertia.6 Stages of ChangeNot every aspect of our lives needs to be changed radically at every moment, that would be exhausting. Yet, along the way, there are places where our actions cause us or others grief. And, the impact to ourselves and others outweighs our desire to keep doing the same thing.Insanity is doing the same thing over and over, expecting a different result. Albert EinsteinSo, in an effort to stop the insanity, let’s take a look at the typical steps in the change process. DenialI have live a life of creation and entrepreneurship, and one of the first principles of being an entrepreneur is the awareness of problems. Inately as a entreprenuer, we love to solve problems. If you can see all the problems around you, then you will have the basis for creating solutions, it’s a core business concept. I discuss this in my course “Life in Bloom,” how developing awareness about what isn’t working in your life, is defeating us, and I suggest we focus on what IS.It’s all between our ears, and in our inner voice. What stories do you tell yourself?And even more important, what stories do you repeat? If you are not where you want to be in your life, then it may be time to explore if you are in denial about changes that need to happen. Confronting our own denial is the most important first step in creating any meaningful changes. As long as you deny the need for change, you will not take action, and thusly, nothing will change.Take a moment and consider a situation in your life, where you honestly need a change. Write it down and create your desire list. Get it out of your head.Awareness.Once you recognize that there are aspects of your life that need change, you can begin the process of developing your awareness. What stories do you believe about what you are capable of? Where do these stories come from? Do the stories work for you? Or, are these stories limiting you? Where is the gap in the story, from where you are now, to where you want to be?Expanding your awareness about the stories that you may be telling yourself that are not benefiting you; is key to changing the story and unlocking the garden of your mind.There is a subtle difference between awareness and acknowledgment, but acknowledgment is important in recognizing the truth of your awareness. People can sit in the place of awareness for a long time before they are ready to move on I believe that acknowledging the importance of your awareness begins to shift us into thoughtful action.Acknowledgment requires that we own our behaviors, our thoughts, and accept that they didn’t develop in a vacuum, but rather that they came to us as a tool and they may no longer serve with the same benefit anymore. It is impossible to let go of anything that we are either in denial of or still fighting with inside ourselves.Desire.You can move from denial to awareness; you can have a deep understanding and have acknowledged the issues around you. But, if you don’t actually desire the changes, or want to shift your Story, nothing will happen. Desire can move mountains, and it can literally carry us along through difficulties that otherwise we would avoid. When the desire to be different overcomes the comfort of staying the same, we start to move from thoughtful action to actual action.And, here’s the deal, we often take on changes because we think we are supposed to. Maybe our parents or our children want us to make a change. Possibly we are in the pre-contemplative stage and are only shopping the change, but not ready to commit. Whatever place you are in the change process, without a strong desire to see the change through, any bump in the road will likely knock you off the wagon. When I think about changes, especially big changes, I scale my desire. Zero (0) to ten (10); if I am not excited, energized or determined enough to be at least an 8 or 9 in commitment or desire for change, I have to wonder if I really want what I say I want.If you find yourself lacking desire, rethink what you say you want. Look to your life, and sit with what is important enough for you to be at least an 8. Then make that the goal. Blocks, Fears, and Sticking Points.Once we know what we need to do, and we desire to do it, often comes a phase where our fears get triggered. We will often throw up all sorts of blocks, or fears, that can derail our forward trajectory.The human brain hates change; there is some interesting research on the amounts of glucose that the brain uses to learn new things, and technically, the brain wants to conserve as much energy as possible. Trying to avoid change is the brains’ way of conserving energy. New habits require more attention than old hardwired habits.Then there are the normal things that we use to avoid discomfort. Like the discomfort of being outside our of comfortable box. For instance, the stories that we have told ourselves for years about what we can and can’t do, what we should or shouldn’t do, these old stories will likely raise their voices and try and shut you down. I was just having a conversation with someone today about writing their book. They are in the space of not sharing what they are up to with others because other people’s limits get dumped on them too. “You know, it’s really hard… it’s probably a waste of time…” And all these are limiting perspectives.The antidote to our fear is Grace. Giving ourselves permission to have fears, acknowledging them, breath through them, forgiving ourselves for being human, and then pushing on. Creating a new story.To make big changes, you are going to have to create a new story. Breaking up the stories in your life doesn’t mean you have to know exactly what the end will look like. Yet you do have to design a story that resonates with you, and that shows you the horizon in the direction that you want to go.Questions that might help you think this through might sound like, what is important to me? What am I missing in my life that I will regret if it doesn’t happen? What am I passionate about? When I am having fun and talking with friends, what topics do I get really energized by? What do I think I am good at? What did I want to be when I was a kid? Is there a dream I gave up on that, I still think about?I go over this int eh BE DO HAVE concept on the awaken beauty podcast and in our upcoming Life in Bloom program and its powerful.Once you have a vision or goal of how you want to show up in your life, it’s much easier to determine the actions that will take you there. I ask myself this question for every goal I have. “Is what I am about to say, think, or do, going to take me one step closer to my goal or one step farther away?” This is my compass towards the destination of the story I want to live. Actions.Once you have a vision of the new story that aligns with your big changes, then you can determine what actions need to happen. Habits of action, thinking, reacting, or responding are like superhighways in our minds. To create a new habit, we are going to have to look for tiny exit ramps and pull over and get some extra resources.Tiny habits are based on habit links. For instance, if I have a hardwired habit of brushing my teeth, linking a new habit to the old habit can help to form the new wiring in my brain.You might try to gamify your big change. There are apps that you have to pay a nonprofit if you dont meet your goal! Its using our natural competitiveness.In Closing.If you have big dreams, what got you where you are, may need adjustments or flat out changes to get you further down the road towards your goal. Use these 6 stages to support yourself in plugging away towards what you say is important to you. Draw on your courage, fortitude, perseverance, and maybe your competitiveness and craft a story that opens the path to your dreams. Dream big – work smart.All my love and light, Kassandra!

People seem to expect that when the new year comes around they will magically be able to commit to resolutions they couldn’t keep the entire previous year. You have the power to take responsibility for your choices. You need to get to a place where you have a strong foundation to build off of. Are there gray areas that you’re avoiding? It’s time to shine a light on the areas that are in the gray. Are you living in alignment with where your soul knows it should be? You need to move out of the gray areas and back to joy. What daily ritual can you implement? Start working on those gray areas now by implementing a small daily ritual that you can learn to keep consistently. It takes approximately 68 days for something to become a habit. Start small, such as working out once a day. Get up early, make your bed, or drink more water. Start early in the morning because your willpower wanes throughout the day. As you start to successfully continue that habit, you build success on success. If you’re struggling, find a way to get your spouse on board. Fill them in on your goals and allow them to keep you accountable. Maybe your spouse will dive in with you! After all, you’ll do more for someone else than you’ll do for yourself. Work hard to find a middle ground of accountability and support. There is power in commitment. Grant Cardone says “Commit first and figure the rest out later”. Are you ready to commit to implementing one small change? What are the ‘big rocks’ you will schedule around? Are you aware of what happens every day? Do you know where your time is going? How much time are you wasting? When we were doing 75Hard, we cultivated an awareness of where our time was being spent and learned something valuable: You will always have time for the things you prioritize. Are your goals important enough that you’re prioritizing them daily? Your non-negotiables should be your core commitments that you schedule first—the rocks. Things that you want to do are the tiny pebbles or sand that are filtered in and fit around the rocks. When you’re saying you don’t have time for something important, you’re prioritizing something that’s not. What 3-5 things are your priorities? Take some time to think through what those are, and schedule them into your next week. Let everything else filter around them, and you’ll be amazed. Commit to change NOW What is taking up mental space and energy? What is robbing your peace? It is there for you to address it. Stop making things more difficult than they need to be. Show up as the person you want to be now. Not next week, not in 2020, but now. The more responsibility you take, the more power you get back. And there is power in commitment. Welcome to episode 5 of the Not Your Mother’s Life; Not Your Mother’s Advice podcast! In this episode we will be talking about taking on a different way of thinking, being & doing, to get what we want. It’s called the “BE DO HAVE model & I first learned about it from Jim Fortin. I’m not sure who first started this model, maybe it originated from Zig Ziglar, who wrote: “You've got to be before you can do, and do before you can have.”. Again, I’m not really sure, but what I am REALLY sure about, is that it works! To explain this, let’s start with the way that most of us think. Most people work from a Have, Do, Be mentality. And that goes something like this: if I only had (or once I have) that job, the money, the time, etc. then I could take action in order to become what we desire to be: successful, fulfilled, happy & so on. Well, that is BACKWARDS! In this way of thinking though, we are working from a place of lack. When we work from a place of lack, we are focusing on lack & therefore, that is what we get more of! We feel we aren’t good enough, smart enough, strong enough, wealthy enough; we feel as though we don’t have what we need, therefore, we are focused on being “less than”. The Be Do Have Mentality: First you "be" the thing called "happy" (or "knowing," or "wise," or "compassionate," or whatever), then you start "doing" things from this place of beingness -- and soon you discover that what you are doing winds up bringing you the things you've always wanted to "have." On today's episode, we'll talk about the BE DO HAVE formula for success That you want to change your health habits, stop overeating or make peace with your body, HOW you go about the process of transformation will determine your success. The process that most of us have been thought to apply when wanting to create something new in our life has been the DO HAVE BE model. In order to BE successful, for example, we need to first DO the things that HAVE the Success. When we DO enough of the “things, we hope to be rewarded by finally BEING successful. DO BE HAVE in health transformation Take the example of the goal of being happy & healthy for women in today’s society. We are taught that in order for us, women to be happy and healthy, must HAVE thinness. We must fit in the proper BMI and have the “normal thin” body. In order for us to have the thin & a proper BMI body, we must DO diets (control food and / or exercise). When we have thinness and proper BMI, we will be rewarded by being healthy and happy. Normal right? Perhaps normal to society standards but not right. The problem is that it doesn’t work... I mean 95% of diets fail and dieters regain the weight which means that 95% of the population doesn’t have access to health and happiness? DO HAVE BE keeps us stuck That model DO HAVE BE keeps us stuck in a state of depression, fear, guilt, and shame which leads us straight to a repeated cycle of failure. The results are that we are forever chasing health and happiness, but never getting “there”. You’ve been there and perhaps are still there. I know I was for nearly 25 years. Stuck in a forever state of personal failure when it came to my weight, body, and food habits. But it wasn’t my fault just like it’s not yours either. I was never taught how to actually create personal success in my life. I knew how to create success when it came to business and money but not personal behaviors. BE DO HAVE model is the solution To be successful with human personal transformation, we must instead apply the Be Do Have model. What is the difference between DO HAVE BE versus DO BE HAVE? In order to HAVE what you want, something that you currently do not have, you are going to have to do things you haven’t done before. You're going to have to do things differently. In order to DO the things you haven’t done before, you are going to have to BE someone you haven’t been before. The whole thing really got started when she was laid off from work. Most people would see being let go as a negative experience. But not Lisa. She viewed this change as a gift, and as a push to start anew. Transformation services: we learn how this works as a career or a job. When someone is laid off from work, Lisa will come in as part of what is called transiition services. She helps the former employee as they are leaving their work for the last time. Life coaching: we hear about the specifics of the job as it relates to personal and corporate clients. No. The word 'no' can be a complete sentence. We are over extended in our personal and professional lives and sometimes just saying no is the best option. No explanation or excuses needed. Communication. It is important to learn how to communicate with others, but it is more important in some cases, to communicate with ourselves. We need to get to know who we are as people, and we need to listen to when our bodies tell us we need to slow down. Be comfortable with yourself. The happiness equation. Society is always telling us that we need more stuff to be happy. We are always chasing happiness. Society tells us that DO + HAVE = BE HAPPY. But that equation is wrong and needs to be looked at another way. We need to be happy and do things that are fulfilling and then we will have what we need. BE + DO = HAVE. Everybody wants to produce motivational quotes, everybody wants to be an inspiration, but you can't fake it. People can genuinely tell, they can sense if you're the real deal or not. Go out and kick butt in the business world or go out and kick butt in the fitness world or go out and kick butt and whatever world you're trying to put a dent in. And then come back and say, hey guys, hey guys, my name is Danny Morel. Look what I did. And being that I did it, I can show you how to do it too. Results are your judge, jury, and conviction. There are two formulas, one that unsuccessful people follow and one that successful people follow. Unsuccessful people’s formula starts with DO. They ask themselves, “What do I have to do in order to have what I want to have so that I can be happy?” DO HAVE BE. What starts to happen is anytime that you start off with DO, you're going to base what you can do or what you think you can do based off of the things that you're doing now and the things that you've done before. Half the battle is not understanding that the successful people live life through a complete perspective. They start with BE. “Who do I have to BE? Who do I envision myself BEING? What is my real ultimate purpose? What's the value that I'm going to bring to this world?” They then DO as a result of that BECOMING who they needed to BE to create different results. What do you feel when you receive your monthly paycheck? Do you have happy thoughts and feeling of relief and relaxation? Or do you have negative thoughts and feel anxious with worry? Today, CEO of Money & Miracles Breakthrough Coaching and the Co-Founder of the Soulful Money Masterclass, Ryan Yokome, shares how we can tap into our own lives to discover and embrace the currency of wellness. Change Your Mindset on Money "When you know who you are and you know yourself and you're comfortable with that, you can go anywhere and do anything because you don't have to be someone that you're not. You can show up as you and it's so liberating and freeing."- Ryan Yokome Each of us has a personal story with money and it begins with our background and our parents' relationship with money. Whether or not their relationship with money was good, if they said something about money or had a certain attitude and behavior towards it, we picked up on that when we were younger. Fortunately, their experience with money does not have to be the same as our story and relationship with money. To help us change our own money story, Ryan explained the concept of Be-Do-Have and its reversal pattern, Have-Do-Be. A majority of us believe that there is a lack of money. However, it is an abundant source of energy that is always available to us. All we have to do is change our thinking and approach to money and do reverse thinking with Have-Do-Be. First believe that you already have the money that you need. Next, do something differently that will allow you to receive that money and finally become that person who has the money. Focus on the Essence of Money "How you tap into a different space of magnetizing money in your life is how you focus on the essence. You focus on the feeling that money will give you if you had those things now. What's the essence? Would you feel more joy, happiness, relaxed? Cause you're not actually after money, but a feeling. "-Ryan Yokome The key to help you change your mindset on money is to focus on the essence of money and what it means to you. How do you feel if you imagine that you already have all the money or monthly paycheck that you need to get to where you want to be? Is it happiness? Relaxation? Success? You don't want money, but a feeling. The feeling that money gives you. As soon as you focus on that feeling, you will change what you do because your actions will be different and you'll become a different person during that process. You want to put all these feelings about money on the table and process the feeling to help make the unconscious conscious. What's your story with money? Is it your story or your family's story? Tap Into The 5 Positive Money Beliefs "The currency of wellness is connection."- John W. Travis, MD, MPH To experience the positive mindset change of currency, Ryan explained the 5 Positive Money Beliefs: 1) Meaning Money is neutral and we are the ones who give it energy and meaning. You can actually experience how your life is changing depending on how you approach money. Money gives meaning when you notice external changes such as where you live, what possessions you have, what food you eat each day etc. People will also give you clues that money is changing your life because they will notice it too. They will notice that there is something different about you. Lastly, because we can change the energy and meaning that money gives us, you decide what your money story is and will be. Life is not based on luck or genes, but the choices that we make and that creates our money story. 2) Relationships Treat money as if it were a person. Now, how would you treat money if you were dating it? How do you treat it when you log into your online bank account or when you get paid? Does it give you happiness or cause you stress? 3) Purpose What is the purpose of money for you? Why do you want to make more money and what do you want to do with it? If you're not giving money a purpose or being intentional with it, then you're not connecting with it. Ryan gave a great example that you connect with your money when you pay your bills because that money helps pay the salaries of the employees of the other business. When you give your money a purpose, you tap into the essence of it and how it makes you feel. 4) Giving Ryan believes that if you give to another person, that you're actually giving back to yourself as well. So if you shift into a different state of love and abundance, you pass that feeling on to other people. Giving the genuine feelings of love and abundance to others is just what many of us need to feel that excitement and purpose for life that we crave. Give compliments, a smile, or a "Have a nice day!" with real feeling the next time you're at the check out counter. 5) Receiving For many of us, it is so much easier to give than to receive because we haven't learned how to receive love. Past relationships and experiences have caused us to feel like we didn't receive the love that we wanted or needed. Because of this, it can be hard to receive love from others or we don't know why other people are tryitng to give us love. Especially in a world of technology, we are starving for true connection with other people, but we don't know how to accept it when it's given to us. When we receive money from work or as a gift from another person, we can practice receiving love and abudance from another source. This source that will help us buy food, pay for a home, and use to help us get to where we want to be in life. The Answers Are Simple, But Not Easy • Wealthy Contractors begin with the end in mind and knowing what to do • Wealthy Contractors know who they are and what they believe to be true • Wealthy Contractors know what type of Contracting they are good at doing • Wealthy Contractors know how to generate more leads than they can handle Do You Want To Know How They Found The Answers? Step #1 Begin With The End In Mind "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People." Everything is created twice. First in our minds, and when we do the work to bring them into physical existence. Take your power and take control of your ability to Be-Do-Have. You can re-write your own scripts and take control and responsibility for the outcome of your Construction Company by using your imagination and conscience. Three major aspects of personal and business management of your contracting company: 1. Leadership - what do you want to accomplish? 2. Management - how can you accomplish it? 3. Productivity - just decide to do it. Peter Drucker and Warren Bennis, "Management is doing things right; Leadership is doing the right things." Have a vision of what your Construction Company Money Machine will be when you are finishing building it. It will be like a deep, wide river running smooth and calm moving millions of gallons of water through lush green valleys where farmers and ranchers pump the fresh water into their crops and fields to feed their families for a lifetime and beyond. Your Construction Company Money Machine will be moving millions of dollars from customers and clients through lush green valleys where you will pump cash flow into your bank and investment accounts to feed your family for a lifetime and beyond. Step #2 Know Who You Are And What Your Believe To Be True Your Perception Is Your Reality And The Truth Is Four Levels Deep To get to the truth about your construction company, you must go on a journey. It is four levels deep and like most successes in life, it is simple but not easy. Level One - What contractors want to hear Level Two - What contractors want to believe Level Three - Everything else Level Four - Truth A Story To Illustrate The Four Levels What Contractors Want To Hear - One evening after work a group of contractors met at the Contractor Business Round Table, which is the neighborhood tavern with a round table, pitcher of beer and four contractors. They talked about how tough it is to get profitable jobs no matter what the economy is like. When times are good, it is hard to find employees, when times are tough the phone doesn't ring. Everyone agreed there was nothing anyone could do about it. What Contractors Want To Believe - A short while later they talked about making money and agreed that really big contractors make most of the money, and little contractors were doomed to struggle. Everything Else - One of the contractors suggested maybe they could ask one of the larger more profitable contractors and find out what they did that made the difference. This made the other contractors a bit uncomfortable. Then it happened, and they all heard and felt the dreaded Snap-Crackle-Pop! The contractor who suggested asking for help experienced a paradigm shift and broke through to the other side. This contractor began leveling up! Suddenly they all remembered what that The Contractors Accountant, Randal DeHart, had said about leveling up. "As you develop your Business Strategy your income is likely to increase. The impact on your friends will not be pleasant as you will be proving that good people can win in the construction game by playing it with high moral and ethical standards and the willingness to try something different." Truth - Is whatever you believe, and you will look for evidence to support your truth. Part of my truth comes from some of the writings of Og Mandino: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Salesman’s Prayer Oh creator of all things help me for this day I go into the world naked and alone, and without your hand to guide me I will wander far from the path which leads to success and happiness. I ask not for garments or gold or even opportunities equal to my ability; instead guide me that I may acquire ability equal to my opportunities. You have taught the lion and eagle to hunt and prosper with teeth and claw. Teach me how to hunt with words and prosper with love so that I may be a lion among men and an eagle in the marketplace. Help me to remain humble through obstacles and failures yet hide not from mine eyes the prize that will come with victory. Assign me tasks to which other have failed, yet guide me to pluck the seeds of success from their failures. Confront me with fears that will temper my Spirit yet endow me with courage to laugh at my misgivings. Spare me sufficient days to reach my goals; yet help me to live this day as though it be my last. Guide me in my words that they may bear fruit; yet silence me from gossip that none be maligned. Discipline me in the habit of trying and trying again yet show me the way to make use of the Law of Averages. Favor me with alertness to recognize opportunity, yet endow me with patience which will concentrate my strength. Bathe me in good habits that the bad ones may drown; yet grant me compassion for weakness in others. Suffer me to know that all things shall pass; yet help me to count my blessings of today. Expose me to hate so it not be a stranger; yet fill my cup with love to turn strangers into friends. But all these things be only if thy will; I am a small and lonely grape clutching the vine, yet thou hast made me different from all others. Verily there must be a special place for me. Guide me, help me, show me the way to become all you planned for me when my seed was planted and selected by you to sprout in the vineyard of the world. Help this humble salesman, guide me God. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Step #3 Know What Type Of Contracting You Are Good At Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities And Threats (S.W.O.T.) SWOT - Is one of the tools we use in strategic planning for construction companies to evaluate the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats involved in determining the particular target market. Strengths - Are construction projects that your construction company does extremely well at and earns a greater than average gross margin than give it an advantage over other contractors. What are they and how can your construction contracting company expand on them? Weaknesses - Are construction projects that your construction company does poorly at and breaks even or loses money. What are they and how can your construction contracting company turn them into strengths? Opportunities - Are construction projects and markets not currently being served where it is possible for your construction company to enter and turn them into strengths? Threats - Elements outside your construction company that could cause trouble for you or your construction projects. What are they and how can your construction contracting company turn them into opportunities? "So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you can win a hundred battles without a single loss. If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or may lose. If you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself." The Art of War by Sun Tzu There Is A Lot More that I would like to share with you about using SWOT to help your construction company increase sales, profit, and cash flow by redirecting the time, money, energy and resources from the bottom 80% of your current customer's clients and jobs to the top 20%. Step #4 How To Generate More Leads Than You Can Handle You can easily generate more leads than you can handle because in the previous three steps you laid the foundation by having a vision for what your Construction Company will be when you finish building it, you know who you are, and you know who is your Prime Client. Marketing Is A Science Not An Art A lot of Contractors are having trouble adapting to the new economy. I Have Made More Mistakes – than ten of the average contractors put together. I’ve learned a great deal of hard, hard lessons and worked my way through a number of “Character Building Moments.” So what I am about to ask you to do is something I have done for many years during my contracting days, and it still works. Let’s Run The Numbers Starting With The Cost To Acquire A Customer Step #1 – Generate a Profit & Loss Report from the previous two years and isolate total income. (Note: All companies are only two years old regardless how long they have been in business because what happened more than two years ago doesn’t matter when developing a financial forecast.) Step #2 – How Much Money Did You Invest In Marketing? Not investing money in marketing is like winking at a pretty girl or guy in the dark, you know you are doing it, but they don’t. Relying on word of mouth means being in a race for the championship of low price leaders! Step #3 – How many new customers or clients did you acquire during the past two years? Step #4 – Divide Total Income from step #1 by the number of customers or clients in step #3 and you will have a rough idea of your sales per customer. Step #5 – Divide The Amount Of Money You Invested In Marketing by the number of customers or clients in step #3. Just know that 80% of marketing is done to keep current customers and only 20% is designed to attract new ones. I have studied marketing extensively and will offer this one hint. Why do you suppose the car manufacturers invest so much money advertising their products when most people continue to purchase similar makes and models over and over? Step #6 – Multiply The Net Profit Percentage shown on your Profit & Loss by the sales per customer in step #4 to generate a rough idea of the net worth of a customer to your Contracting Company. This is one of the numbers that becomes very important if you ever want to sell your Contracting Company. Step #7 – Customer Gross Profit in step #6 minus marketing cost in step #5 = Customer Net Profit. Step #8 – Where MR > MC When the Marginal Revenue greater than the Marginal Cost and risk is manageable do the deal. MR>MC is a long discussion for more on it click here Step #9 – Where is Break-Even or how far can I go before it is time to quit doing it? Step #10– When You Know How Much A Client Is Worth you will know how much you can invest to acquire a new one and as many new ones as you want.
