What happens when an eternal optimist and a dedicated pessimist get together for a conversation? They end up... On Hiatus.
"The One Where... Grant's Mom Finally Visits" - Season Finale After countless mentions, one infamous phone call attempt to shame Jay, and years of anticipation, we finally welcome Grant's Mom into the studio for our season finale. But first, a word of caution: while we're known for finding humor in the darkest corners of mental health, this episode tackles some heavy subjects including depression, anxiety, loneliness, suicide, and molestation. Don't worry though – our dynamic duo still manages to navigate these waters with their trademark blend of sensitivity and wit. In what can only be described as a masterclass in elderly interviewing (yes, you read that right), Jason shocks everyone by trading his Angry Ginger persona for that of a surprisingly skilled interviewer. Who knew he could be professional? Certainly not Grant! The episode peels back the layers of Grant's childhood, revealing the complexities of growing up in a home where Dad's presence was measured in weeks away rather than time present. We learn how the family eventually needed therapy just to reintegrate him back into their daily lives – both as a father and husband. Grant's Mom opens up about the challenges of essentially solo-parenting two boys while instilling the values that would shape Grant into the ice-cream-binging, anxiety-managing, deeply empathetic human we know today. In an unexpected turn, a discussion about a recently deceased family friend evolves into a powerful moment when Grant confronts the disconnect between his parents' memories and his own traumatic experiences with this person. It's a stark reminder that sometimes, even our own parents, can forget about our most touching moments. The conversation shifts to parenting tactics, exploring what we inherit from our parents and – in true grandparent fashion – how all those carefully crafted rules go straight out the window once grandkids enter the picture. Because apparently, "What happens at Grandma's stays at Grandma's" is now a legally binding contract. We wrap up with Mom sharing her favorite memories of Grant, proving that even our most sensitive moments can lead Jay to an unexpected tugging on the wrong kind of heart strings of conversation – though Jay's contribution to this touching maternal moment certainly had Grant wishing his mom had packed some extra absorption for the emotional overflow. This season finale serves as a powerful reminder that understanding our mental health often means looking back at where we came from, even if that journey requires a few laughs to get through the years and years of tears. Thank you for joining us on this wild ride through the landscape of mental health, family dynamics, and the occasional inappropriate joke that somehow made it past the editing room. See you next season, where we'll continue our mission to make mental health discussions a little less heavy and a lot more human – one questionably appropriate conversation at a time. Feel like you've found your people? We'd love to hear from you! Join our digital circus over on Twitter/X @Podcast_Hiatus, where Season 4 promises the shocking debut of... While you're there, give our resident sass master, The Angry Ginger, a follow @S7evendaysageek. He promises to only bite on days ending in 'y'.
"The One With... Jay's Cousin Lori" kicks off our two-part season finale with what can only be described as Grant's attempt at investigative journalism – if investigative journalism involved interrogating your co-host's cousin about childhood trauma and angry ginger origins. Enter Lori, Jay's cousin and childhood partner-in-crime, who grew up more like a sister to our beloved Angry Ginger. Grant, armed with the subtlety of a sledgehammer and the determination of a true-crime podcaster, dives straight into the deep end. What was life really like growing up with an alcoholic mother? Who hurt little Jason? And the question burning in Grant's mind like a forgotten Hot Pocket in the microwave: has anyone actually seen Jay cry? This episode peels back 47 years of Jason's life like an onion – marriages, kids, affairs, divorce, dating – the whole enchilada of human experience. From mountaintop moments to valley-dwelling lows, nothing is off-limits. But in classic "On Hiatus" fashion, what starts as Grant's mission to expose Jay's hidden depths ends up revealing something unexpected about himself. (No spoilers here, folks – you'll have to press play to uncover that gem!) Stay tuned for next week's grand finale where the tables turn and Grant brings on a mystery guest. Who could it be? Let's just say Jay's got some questions of his own locked and loaded. Want to join our dysfunctional family? Drop us a line at OnHiatus@MonkeyPooStudios.com. Your message might just save Grant from his nightly ice cream binge (results not guaranteed). Follow our shenanigans on Twitter/X @Podcast_Hiatus, and give our resident Angry Ginger a follow @S7evendaysageek. Breaking news: Grant might actually join the digital world in Season 4 to help manage the show's social media. He actually hasn't commited to this nor is he aware that it's something that will be brought up in an upcoming On Hiatus Team Meeting... so we'll see. Thanks for letting us share our mental health journey with you this season. Join us next week for our final episode of the year, where we promise to maintain our tradition of questionable decisions and unexpected revelations! P.S. Grant still wants to know if anyone's seen Jay cry. The investigation continues...
"The One Where... They Read From The Notebook" isn't your typical tear-jerker (though Grant probably wished it was). In this revealing episode, The Angry Ginger unearths a nine-year-old notebook - and yes, we're absolutely certain about that timeline, as Grant fact-checks it approximately seventeen times. What starts as Jason flipping through old podcast ideas and show concepts quickly turns into an unexpected time capsule of vulnerability. Tucked between creative brainstorms and the early seeds of what would become "Deconstructing Dad," lies something Grant has been hunting for like a truth-seeking missile: evidence that his seemingly unflappable friend once grappled with the same dark questions that keep him up at night. Through pages of raw introspection, we witness Jason's past self wrestling with questions that would make any therapist's notepad weep: "Will I ever be loved again?" and the eternal quest of "What is happiness and how to find it?" The crown jewel of this literary excavation? A one-year plan that begins with the hilariously self-deprecating goal to "do a sit-up because he's a fata**!" (Spoiler alert: He's done at least three since then.) Grant, like a kid who just found out Santa is real (plot twist!), can barely contain his excitement at this glimpse behind the curtain of Jason's comedic armor. His "Where has this book been my whole life!?" reaction perfectly captures the moment when you realize your friend's class clown routine might have been masking some serious soul-searching. But here's the kicker - Jason reveals these thoughts were likely meant for his "Deconstructing Dad" podcast, during a period when Grant was too preoccupied with his own chaos to tune in. In classic Angry Ginger fashion, Jay lands the episode's most pointed jab with a laugh: "Maybe if you were a better friend and listened to my podcast, you would have known all this years ago." Sometimes the best therapy sessions happen when you're reading old notebooks with a friend who's been waiting nine years to say "I told you so." But wait, there's more! Just when you think the vulnerability hour is wrapping up, Grant whips out "The 10 Questions" from his sadly departed but deeply missed "The Stranger Conversations" podcast. Jason, still slightly salty about never receiving an invitation to this apparently prestigious show (no, he's not holding a grudge... much), initially refuses to play along. But Grant, master of selective memory, plays innocent while Jay sees right through it like a freshly Windexed window. What follows is Grant's attempt at serious, soul-searching questions designed to peel back the layers of human nature... met with what can only be described as peak Angry Ginger responses. But we're not giving away the goods here - you'll have to press play to witness this masterclass in question-dodging and sass-mastery for yourself. As always, thank you for spending your valuable time with us. We hope that by sharing our struggles and pain through both serious and decidedly less-serious conversations, we're making your day a little brighter... or at least giving you an hour's worth of distraction from whatever chaos you're currently calling normal. Keep listening, keep laughing, and remember - sometimes the best therapy comes with a side of snark. ***Only Two more episodes left for the season. It's time for another mind-bending episode of "On Hiatus," where we tumble through the rocks of reality and come out... slightly more confused than before. In this week's episode, "Rock Tumbling Through a Simulation Theory," we join our intrepid heroes, Grant and Jason, as they navigate the treacherous waters of mental health, masculinity, and... geology? Yeah, you heard that right. Excited to be off hiatus, Grant, proudly boasts about his year-long tear drought. Congrats, buddy! Nothing says "I'm doing great" like emotional constipation. But hold onto your hand sanitizer, because we're not done taking a nosedive into how Covid turned his world upside down faster than Carol Baskins did to the Tiger King. Now, here's where it gets interesting... (Show code secret time: This whole episode was originally part of the conversation from last weeks episode, but thematically it didn't all work as one coheisive unit so Jay, being the humble superstar editor that he is decided to do his job and this is what you get. Podcasting Gold.) So continuing from last weeks conversation (wink, wink) Grant's questioning his manhood because he's not sure he could survive alone in the woods for a week. Newsflash, Grant: most of us can barely survive a week without WiFi, let alone in the wilderness. But our boy takes it up to eleven, imagining himself as the sole survivor of a plane crash. Spoiler alert: in this scenario, the bears are probably placing bets on how long he'll last. (If you'll recall, Jay would be one of those bears) Jason, ever the optimist, suggests turning this existential crisis into content for season 4. Because nothing says "ratings gold" like watching two podcasters fumble their way through survival scenarios. It's like "Naked and Afraid," but with more clothes and even more fear. But no tears! Never again with that sentimental sewer drainage. In the immortal words of Grant Markham, "But wait, there's more!" We dive headfirst into the rabbit hole of simulation theory. As the Ginger, not yet stimulated to anger, asks "Are we living in my simulation or yours?" The answer might surprise you... or not, because let's face it, if this was Grant's simulation, we'd all be metal detecting through grey matter till a box filled with accountability rocks gets found and immedietly tumbled. Speaking of which, Grant's got a new addiction... to rock tumbling That's right, rock tumbling! But who knew turning rocks into slightly smoother rocks could be so expensive? ...and here is where Jason's inner Angry Ginger makes an appearance. We'll just leave it to the audio. We wrap up with a spicy discussion on SSRIs, numbing effects, and potential side gigs as shopaholics or sex addicts. You know, just your average Sunday morning chat. And here's the kicker, folks: turns out Grant's meds might be turning him into a big spender after all. Who knew polishing rocks could be such a slippery slope? I guess you could say he's really... getting his rocks off. One thing is for sure though... "He's never going to financially recover from this!" Tune in next time when we'll probably be discussing Grant's new addiction to collecting dryer lint or Jason's sudden urge to become a professional financial guru specializing in stupid purchase beat downs. Until then, keep questioning reality and tumbling those rocks!
...And we're back! This time with a much healthier Grant Markham! That's right, after 3 months of sickness and disparity, Grant is able to return to the microphone to discuss not just mental health but physical health. Jay of course is along to help guide him and encourage him to take his vitamins, accept his old age and bring up actual texts of his downward spiral... just in case he forgot something!
In this episode, Jay (The Angry Ginger) shares his struggles with Borderline Personality Disorder. His struggles with being a father of two daughters diagnosed with BPD. He feels guilty for potentially being part of the cause. He shares his struggles with trying to reach out to one of his daughters and the rippling effect that this disorder can have on the entire family. Grant relates from being misdiagnosed as Bipolar for many years and how his depression has caused him to not always see the true reality of things but what he made up in his head for a multitude of reasons. Trigger Warning: There are comments made about suicide. Thoughts of how and why from both a time of being young and misunderstood and from being older and wiser and how outlooks have changed. Also, Grant attempts to travel down a road to LOSERVILLE where apparently he beleives Jay has residual fear from the past of where he swears Jay once resided... but trust me when I tell you that he was misinformed. Thank you so much for listening! We would both appreciate it if you could help spread the word about this podcast. Tell your friends, your enemies, share it on the socials with both! This week your favorite mentally challanged mental health advocates return to share their thoughts on clips that didn't make thier original episodes. These are conversations that maybe didn't fit the theme of the episode preveiously released or maybe they just needed to be cut for time... but Jay (The Angry One) deemed that they were still worthy of airtime! Grant didn't have much say except for what he originally had to say during the time of recording! Without further ado, press play and hear Grant and Jay take you on a trip down the cutting room floor's memory lane! In this episode: Jay gets called out for having a bit of preshow attitude toward his girlfriend when she presents a last minute tree removal need before pressing record. Grant can't help but make commentary and Jay thinks he's imagining things. Jay has some beef with the way Grant always presents the ugly truth (and ugliness) of his past relationships. Grant sticks by what he says, except for the time he said nothing. Shockingly he has plenty to say now. Grant struggles with a new perscripton and how it effects him. Jay questions whether our friendship would have made it through a one year rental agreement. Grant struggles to have a good manly cry and Jay struggles to remember when the last time it was that he actually had one. We're back from On Hiatus... this time with possible identity problems as Grant contemplates shaving off his handlebar mustache and beard in an attempt to take a decade off his image, but will he still get noticed? Jason shares what he's grateful for in an attempt to lure Grant into doing the same thing but he adds his own dash of humor to the whole thing but in sharing his gratiude journaling, he shares that he got some bad results back from a blood test and he might need to get a liver ultrasound. Speaking of drinking, Jay just returned from Vegas, and Zion! The family trip was a great success. Did it compare to Grant's latenight police shakedown? Listen and find out! Grant, who normally struggles to LIVE IN THE MOMENT, made a promise to do just that while on vacation with his family. Was he able to actually live in the moment? Was there a meltdown? Have you ever heard the show before!? If so, you won't be let down! After we hear about Grant's vacation and all the fun (meltdown or not) included, we turn it over to Jay, who's planning one heck of a vacation with his girlfriend and kids. Yes, eating a footlong in the hottub comes up again (get your mind out of the gutter) and yes it's going to likely happen again (get over it Grant!) Thank you so much for listening! Grant is headed out on vacation, but first he has to solve an RX problem. His reactions to name brand v.s. generic are different as is the cost. But then he discovers that name brands offer extensive discounts to their product on their websites. This can't be legal!! While trying to plan his prescription renewal during his vacation, Grant also admits to stuggling to enjoy himself on vacation. Jay is also gearing up for vacation and he's got zero issues with dropping everything and enjoying every moment, in fact his struggle might be that he's already mentally checked out! Jay and Grant are back with thier personal form of armchair therapy. In this episode Grant shares how he might have gotten himself into some hot water by comparing the way he precieves Jay's relationship with his girlfiend to his own relationship with his wife. Jay admits to never really being passionate about any of his jobs but shares what really gets his juices flowing, while Grant shares his struggles about actually being passionate about his job but the difficulties remaining that way due to all of the outside forces. As if breaking down Grant's (mostly) cognitive distortions wasn't enough in this episode, Jay hits him with a fact about a high percentage of people don't have an inner monologue. This almost breaks Grant mentally. The comedic downward spiral and the wishful thinking that comes from the idea of not having to suffer from listening to his evil unreliable narrator is a rollercoaster of emotions, to say the least. You may recall that in the first official episode of the season, we quickly discussed the 15 cognitive distortions and broke down the first 5 of them and how they related to us... well in this episode we break down the next 5 and how they relate to us. Mostly Grant. Jay doesn't get out of this unscathed though. Grant doesn't seem to think that Jay is discriptive enough when it comes to sharing his emotions and he also admits that he's not happy, nor does he understand Jay's level of depression. Has Jay ever laid in a fetal position and cried when feeling depressed or is it just more of a Meh! feeling? Does walking into a room fill you with Anxiety? Are you an immediate wallflower or do you become the life of the party? Anxiety can effect the way we think and present ourselves in very different ways. In today's episode, this conversation just happens to manifest itself. Grant admits to having an outing that he's nervous about once this weeks recording is finished, so Jay, his non social mask wearing and always filled with positivity cohost, goes along for the ride.
Greetings dearest listener! This week's episode was born from an actual moment in the streets, so to speak. Grant arrives early for a recording session. Ginger isn't ready. He's still got a studio to clean up, kids to deal with and show notes to finish. This causes a bit of a panic. The simiple question of "What the F*** are you doing here already!?" was apparently out of line between friends of twenty years. A discussion ensues. Welcome back dear listener! Here it is... The first OFFICIAL episode of season 3! Grant has officially entered therapy, which means Jason is in therapy too, right? In this ep we discuss Grant's therapy sessions, his new diagnosis, thought more may be coming. Jason asks "What was it that pushed you to finally go back to therapy" and boy does Grant have an answer! As of this recording Grant has only been in therapy a couple of times so things are still new. About halfway through the episode Grant asks Jason why he isn't in therapy. This podcast is a form of dialogue therapy for him and while he doesn't feel a heavy burden or an urge to get something specific off his chest, he is going through a lot. This is a discussion that they will definetly return to. Grant was given some homework while laying on the proverbial couch and he shares that with Jason and we're sharing it with you. (link below) A few topics he discussed with his therapist were Cognitive Distortions and Cognitive Diffusion. We discuss the first 5 out of 15 but it was suggested that Jason take the time to do a bit of research and learn more about these examples and decide if any of them relate to him. So before they come back in a few weeks to continue this conversation (don't worry other topical episodes have already been recorded to hold you over till they circle back to this one) click the link and learn about them as well. 15 Cognitive Distortion Examples: https://www.mindmypeelings.com/blog/cognitive-distortions If you'd like to contact the show you can do so by reaching us here: Twitter: The Podcast can be followed @PodcastHiatus while Grant can be reached @Insta_Grants2. It's been a long while, but we are back with this here episode to announce that we are coming back! That's right, a brand new season of On Hiatus with Jay and Grant is returning! In this "Announcment Episode" we discuss that one of us is now in therapy, complete with a diagnosis, which will get a lot more time on upcoming episodes. We have plans, we have topics and all we need is you to subscribe and listen. There's even theraputic homework that will be assigned if you'd like to take an active roll! Thanks for listening and helping to spread the word about On Hiatus! We're now in Therapy and we're sharing the intimate details of that with you!
Using our first cars as a vehicle into our past, we discuss who we were at a much younger age and some of our mental health issues then... and what we've learned from then and of course what we've carried over into today.
In this episode, your Hiatus Having Heroes are discussing all things vasectomy! That's right. One's had it, the other one hasn't. While explaining in more detail than any human would care to listen to, hemorrhorids and STD's come up. Who's this surgery for anyway and why are kids being brainwashed that 'Reality Shifting' is a real thing by Tik Tokers!? Seriously, Grant teaches Ginger that kids aren't daydreaming but actually 'Traveling' to Hogwarts for an entire lifetime...but they can return within a blink of an eye. What do they bring back with them? Anything informative or is it all LIES!?!? We'd love to hear from you! Yes you! Even though we may or may not still be On HIatus, we were banking episodes to come back from Hiatus. This is the first of said banked episode of On Hiatus where we came off hiatus, but just long enough to go back on hiatus. In this episode we discuss the ease or difficutly of being friends with each other and others. What does that actually mean for two grown adults who are most likely closer to death than their own births? We laugh, we almost cry, we allude to things and we... well how about you listen and report back to us! You can reach Jay and Grant on the Twittersphere at @PodcastHiatus and we really hope that you do reach out to us!
This is the second hour of the LIVE portion of ON HIATUS that took place during Podtoberfest. Go back through the years of podcasting with us. Old recordings are used. Past events in our lives are discussed. Old Relationships. Death. Jokes. Depression and High Anxiety.
This episode is a bit different than what we've done in Season One. For those new to any of the Monkey Poo Studios podcasts, which this one is, Jason The Angry Ginger does an annual podcast marathon involving all of the podcasts and cohosts. We do this live, there's always a plan, but the plans change. Topics get covered, ignored and new and crazy things happen. So if this isn't what you're used to with On Hiatus, that's okay... but you should know Season Two is coming very soon!
In this episode, Ginger treats Grant (TK1) to a full facial ...shave and haircut. Grant uploads himself to the Matrix, the demo version of it anyway, and gets lost in virtual reality. Ginger's ex Grandma-in-law? has a conversation on the low low with his daughter about his bedroom shenanigans and Grant goes full Testosterone on his neighbor for no reason at all.
In this episode, Grant takes us on a trip through his current mental and physical health issues. What started as a Urinary Tract Infection actually grew into much more. From Therapy to Adderall. To the possible side effects of his blood pressure medication, he ends up in the ER. Twice. The second time, with possible life ending issues. Buckle up, Chuck because this one ends with a Funeral (of sorts).
Grant gets groomed. A secret gets shared. A regret from a past relationship comes to bite Jason in the butt and Grant takes this as his queue to once again let him know that he has terrible taste in women, but he also urges Jay to never let him meet anyone he dates as well. It's a win-win! Personal lessons are learned. New walls are built. Jason will never help someone buy a car again!
In this episode, the one after Grants UTI but before the one.... Well, you'll just have to listen to the next two episodes after this. Jason (Ginger) struggles with Therapeutic Maintenance while Grant (TK1) Struggles with pharmaceuticals without some form of dialogue therapy. Chemical depression V.S. Cognitive Depression. This is the beginning of a very real, deep talk conversation about suicidal ideology, Depression, and Anxiety. While everyone struggles with these types of issues differently, please understand that if you struggle with any of these issues that you can reach out, or seek help in many of places. In this Long, Extended but very fun and fulfilling episode, for you the listener. Obviously! Grant And Jay discuss an audio potpourri of topics for you to take in. Grant struggles with a steady stream... and struggles with not even a poof when it comes to bedroom romp-time completion. Jay shares a story of family crisis and his caught-in-a-bad-time-in-life moment. Heads don't roll... but shouting into the wind and hoping to heard might... roll. Like a Clerk, He doesn't want to be here today. Grant empathizes and a deep talk ensues... then Grant wins the second half of the show with his medical diagnosis (completely seperate from the previous problem mentioned) and we end things with a blast from the past.
